I’m weeding the gardening books in my library. I have about 50, and I rarely actually look at them. So I’m skimming through, trying to decide which are worth keeping, and which I can get rid of to make space for more books!

I have several books from the Expert series. The cover art on my edition is different, but this still seems a solid guide and of the two books on roses I have (the other is Time-Life’s Roses, I think this is the stronger.

About 2/3rds of the book is a list of specific roses, organized by the seven groups of roses(hybrid tea, floribundas, patio, miniature, ground cover, climbers/ramblers and shrub). The rest of the book deals with planting and caring, including sections on identifying and dealing with pests and diseases. The design of the book is particularly impressive, packing a lot of information onto each page that is succinct in both text and illustration.

The only down side with this book is it’s written for British gardeners. So the zone map and information on when to prune are for England, not the US. But that information is easy enough to look up on-line.

Verdict: a good reference on roses, keep.

This is an informative guide designed for the beginner to the world of roses (that I very much am) starting from the basics of choosing, planting and maintaining roses to the more complicated matters of splitting and even creating your own. It also includes quite extensive lists of various roses options divided by their different growth forms (ideal for someone like me with little experience of them) and includes pros and cons in a quick and simple table format to make it easy to see what may or may not be suitable. Now I just need to put some of this to the test in my own garden.

I found this little treasure when I was doing some research on roses, it may be old but it is a wonderful reference book with beautiful full colour images.

From it you can gain a whole host of information from the shapes of its leaves and petals to the colouring and fragrances. How to plant and take care of the roses even some tips on breeding a new rose.

Worth picking up if you see it going cheap.
