BOOK TWO OF THE EFFUGIUM In this eagerly-anticipated followup to 2019’s “ The Time Remaining,” Caldo and Kryuss have failed to prevent the grisly deaths of nearly all of the inhabitants of the planet Galenia. After fleeing alongside a handful of survivors, they return to an almost unrecognizable Earth ruled by a tyrannical artie dictator from Caldo’s past who now calls himself The Sovereign. Will they succeed in overthrowing him and restoring freedom and order, or will they die trying?
I read this first on my eReader and then again in paperback. This is an unsolicited review.
I’ve mentioned previously that Patrick Walts is one of my very favorite authors, so I won’t talk about that again here. He picks up seamlessly where he left off in book one. It’s all one on-going story, with a few threads picking back up. Again, Walts is able to write science fiction which is approachable, with enough tech to balance out the people. It’s difficult to say whether one character is “good” or “evil”, which I rather like. They’re all flawed in their own ways and decisions are believable from each perspective. No one is really ‘right or wrong’, instead making choices based on their personal beliefs and situations.
Mostly, I side with the purebred humans, rather than the cyborgs, which don’t seem to realize they are really tools to the one in charge. I could easily envision the future of Terra as the author lays it out. Cyborg cities and human colonies. Not exactly peaceful, each viewing the other as the inferior. Walts also includes a few nearly ridiculous elements (such as a giant robot, for instance) which bring humor and the unexpected to the table.
This book also gets 4.5/5 stars from me, as with book one, it’s the same reasoning: great writing, awesome storyline and storytelling, great name and cover. My only real beef is the need for editing. There are grammar and spelling issues and misplaced words (for instance, at one point a character is being tortured and it is mentioned he is hanging by one arm, having both his legs cut off. The antagonist (a truly vile character, by the way) then cuts off his leg… now, I know he meant cut off his other ARM and he fell to the floor… but this is an example of what I mean).
Still, highly recommended reading and those small issues won’t turn me away from reading more of his books.
