Diane Capri has started something exciting, at least for fans of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher. While the elusive former soldier continues to have exciting adventures in small town USA, Capri has spun past Reacher novels into her own captivating thrillers. This series has made hunting Jack Reacher a quasi- Olympic event, keeping readers scrambling to remember plot lines from past Child novels loosely tied-in with Capri’s intended twists. Always a pleasure to see the synergy these authors bring when intermeshed.
FBI Agent Kim Otto is partnerless, but still on the trail for Jack Reacher, who constantly eludes her. Otto finds herself in Carter's Crossing, Mississippi, where Reacher ended his long career in the US Military. While there, turning over every stone she can find about Reacher, Otto comers face to face with an old crime that’s happened once again. A woman’s been killed when a train runs over her. However, as in 1997, the victim’s throat is cut, leaving the possibility that a killer staged the railroad outcome to cover something up.
Otto seeks to dig u other dirt on Reacher, but is pulled into the middle of the case, only to come face to face with a local sheriff who has a great deal to say about the crime and a lot to add from 1997. Otto begins to feel that Elizabeth Deveraux could be the key to both investigations, though she’s stonewalling as best she can. It’s up to Otto to peel things back and get to the core of the matter before it’s too late.
Having been a longtime fan of Lee Child, I was pleased when I discovered this series. The fact that Diane Capri has Child’s blessing makes it all the more enjoyable, as breadcrumbs from the former Reacher novel emerge throughout this piece. Pulled from the pages of The Affair, Capri adds new depth and an excellent analysis for fans of her work.
Kim Otto headlines a collection of wonderful characters that help keep the book exciting from the opening pages until the very last sentence. Riding solo after her partner retired, Otto will have to work perspectives she knows well while using intuition to fuel her passion for answers. As with Child’s work, Capri brings one-off characters from the shadows and into the limelight to shape the story quite effectively.
The piece is highly entertaining, particularly for those who have a history with Reacher and his nomadic ways. A strong narrative pushes the story alone while well-developed characters allow things to come to life from off the page. Chapters that pull the reader in balance themselves with those teasing new and exciting moments to keep the plot developing. I’m always left a little more curious when I finish a Capri novel, having caught new angles that may not have been as prominent for me when completing the Reacher experience. This was no exception.
Kudos, Madam Capri, for helping me re-live Jack Reacher in a roundabout way! I cannot wait to explore the next novel in the series to delve into another adventure.
Last year I read 42 stories featuring Jack Reacher. And this year I have read three newly released ones, including this one. First I read the 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child. And then I read all the books in this series. This is the tenth novel in the Hunt for Reacher Series, and the thirteenth story featuring Otto and Gaspar. The source book for this volume was Lee Child’s The Affair. That one was the story where Reacher’s last case in the military took place, and it started with a dead woman’s body near a base. In this another body is found killed in a similar fashion 15 years later.
The cast of characters in this story is:
Kim Otto Charles Cooper Lincoln Perry Eugene Hammer Elizabeth Deveraux Scott Greyson Alec Murphy Nina Cloud Carlos Gaspar
and
Jack Reacher
I did not really enjoy The Affair it was the only Jack Reacher story that I have 3/5 stars. The rest got 4 or 5. What I did not like was that there was so much sex. It was more of a romance novel. That was not the case this time. I much preferred this book to the source story. It is still taking some getting use to, to have Gaspar working a high-end job but helping out Otto remotely. For the first time Otto encounters someone she assumes is a Reacher ex who is more than happy to talk about the man and his methods. But there is a dead girl. And soon bodies start piling up. And if it was not for luck, Otto would not realize it was all linked. But there are a lot of moving pieces in this story. And unlike many of the Hunt for Reacher stories we do not really encounter him directly.
This story is much better than the source book. It is a great read in a really fun series. And With the information we garner at the end, I wonder what will happen in Jack Frost, the next volume due out in this series.
Read the review on my blog Book Reviews and More and reviews of other books by Diane Capri.
The author had a great idea, based on the famous Lee Child character Jack Reacher. FBI Special Agent Kim Otto is sent by her boss to a small Mississippi town near an army base, in hopes she can recruit Jack Reacher for an FBI job. Instead Agent Otto helps solve an army base serial killer case. Otto is Reacher's physical opposite, being five feet tall, mixed race, and single, although she still gets to beat up a bad guy. If you have read the Lee Child story of Reacher set in the same town, you will find the plot and story richer. However, it's a good action mystery on its' own. Lee Child has also said good things about this book.
I am as mentioned earlier a sucker for all things Reacher but sadly I find this series is losing a little. I understand the difficults with keeping the stories alive without actually having him appear but the characters need to evolve like they do in Dan Ames series. Still I will continue reading and enjoying these books by Diane Capri because they all take place somewhere Reacher has been and they expand the universe around this almost mythical creature.
Book Review – Author Diane Capri’s Hunt for Jack Reacher thriller, “Full Metal Jack,” is ‘licensed to thrill,' and thrill she does in this Mystery Thriller. Her Hunt for Jack Reacher series is sister novels to Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels. Although Reacher doesn't appear in any of Capri's books, the search for him by the Feds leads to intriguing and captivating stories. Capri is known for her Bestseller spots on Mystery, Police Procedural, Women Sleuths, and Legal Thrillers' lists. In Full Metal Jack, protagonist, FBI Special Agent Kim Otto is sent to find out about a brutal murder in Carter’s Crossing, Mississippi where Jack Reacher ("The Affair") was also last seen. Otter is to be on the lookout for Reacher and is ordered to turn him in to Federal authorities. But when she gets to Carter’s Crossing, the local sheriff and town mayor have joined forces with two majors from the Army’s 110th Investigative Unit - Reacher's former Army unit - to bury the truth about the dead woman’s murder. Full Metal Jack is a mystery thriller full of thrills, chills, and tension, but is also smart, clever, and canny too. Kim Otto is a great character and is a very competent federal investigator. Capri writes a ‘jigsaw puzzle-like' tell that is sure to please. Fans of Lee Child, John Grisham, David Baldacci, and Michael Connelly will not be disappointed in this novel. Again, the only thing readers should not expect is an appearance by Jack Reacher. He does not appear in this book nor any other Hunt for Jack Reacher books. Federal Agent Otto is hunting Reacher, and after book 13, she still hasn’t found him, at least not yet. Very enjoyable read with great writing…
How are a murder at a dog fight in New York City, an apparent suicide in a sleepy little town about to lose its military base, and Jack Reacher's last official case linked together? Kim Otto is dispatched to find out and to find Reacher.
Otto is still without a partner, still struggling to figure out if her boss, Cooper, is working with her or against her, and still using Gaspar as her virtual sidekick. A few familiar faces show up and a few more indelible characters enter the Reacherverse. Throughout it all, shadows of Jack Reacher fall upon everyone involved. Agent Otto becomes more convinced that there's something she's not being told about Reacher and her mission.
Meanwhile, the sleepy little Missippi town explodes with action and the body count begins to mount. Oh, yeah. There's a huge honking, fast-moving train that plays a key role in a well laid out storyline
The action is swift. The plot is intricate and believable. The characters are convincing. By now, Kim and Gaspar are familiar and easy to spend time with. Capri's writing is intense and paints exciting images while leaving you eager to witness the outcome which is always surprising and satisfying.
About the best thing I can say about this series is this, "It's like reading a Jack Reacher novel." Yes, it's that good!
I am a fortunate member of Diane Capri’s ARC and so get to read her books before publication. This is book number 13 in her series The Hunt for Jack Reacher. This time, we see the diminutive Kim Otto working without her long-time partner Carlos Gaspar who has retired because of his failing leg and his inability to physically keep up. However, they still consider themselves partners and Gaspar assists Otto on the side, using his considerable computer skills. This time, Otto is sent to Carter’s Crossing a small, dying town in Mississippi. Reacher was last known to be in the town in 1997 following the death of a woman and now another woman is dead. An apparent suicide having been hit by a train. We are reintroduced to Elizabeth Deveraux now the Mayor of Cooper’s Crossing but who was the Chief of Police in 1997. Lee Child’s fans will recall this strong woman from The Affair, covering Reacher’s last job for the US Army. And the Affair is the sourcebook for Full Metal Jack. We follow one of the characters through his nefarious activities, causing death and destruction and it is not until close to the end of the book that we find out who he is. I never suspected him. The story opens with an illegal dog fight during which this character arranges the death of his long-time antagonist, Hana Pak. Pak is a North Korean diplomat in New York for only two days. His death makes headline news across the country and around the world. In her ongoing search for Reacher, Otto is sent by the Boss, to Cooper’s Crossing. Does the Boss really expect Reacher to turn up there? Having met the Sheriff at the scene of a horrendous motor accident which could have been avoided and which could perhaps be determined as another suicide, Otto continues into town. The town has thrived somewhat because Kelham Army Base had been positioned there and that meant constant coming and going of soldiers to the town, the bars, etc. But now Kelham was to close in 48 hours and only a skeleton staff was still on base. The train that apparently killed the woman comes through town at midnight every night. The sounds and the vibrations are impossible to miss as are the sinkholes caused by this thundering beast. The question then arises how the woman just lay there and waited for the monster to run over her. It is fairly quickly determined that this no suicide but was murder. The woman had her throat cut in a particular way that seems to point to an Army Ranger being responsible and Kelham has plenty of those. The Army has sent its own investigator to Kelham, Major Eugene “Hulk” Hammer and they also have an undercover officer in town, Major Lincoln Price. But he isn’t undercover for long and introduces himself to Otto. Pretty soon the bodies begin to pile up in this little out of the way town, and still there’s no sign of Reacher. In typical Capri style, we are led along the path, feeling both sorry for Otto who is working blind, and amazed at her abilities. She works well with the other law enforcement officers but makes several enemies in a local family when she responds to an overture from one cousin leaving him on the floor, shamed in front of his kin. This books charges along apace. The characters are well defined, and all are believable. Ms Capri obviously knows her subjects several of whom we, as readers have also come to know. To find out whether Reacher does appear and ‘whodunit’ get your hands on a copy of this book when it comes out in a few days. Thanks to Ms Capri for the opportunity to read the advance copy. I strongly recommend it and if you haven't yet read the other books in the series and as Lee Child says "Make some coffee. You'll read all night".
I am a big fan of Diane's and am lucky enough to be on her advanced readers list so I get a free copy of her books to review. So I set a pen and paper beside me to write down pertinent facts as I read because I KNOW how into the Jack Reacher books I get. Didn't do any good, she pulls you right into the book and I'm there wondering why it's time for supper when I planned on reading for at least an hour before I had to move.
The book starts off with people and a situation that I found myself going "How on earth is this going to relate to Jack?". It eventually does as Diane skillfully weaves Kim Otto through another investigation and I am once again amazed at how the plots all link up. We learn more about Kim's character too which is pretty cool when you think this far into the series we'd know her very well. I could be wrong but I think it could feature more as the series continues.
Gaspar while no longer officially being Kim's partner is still helping her along so it is still nice to see we have him as a virtual sidekick. I tried to read slower at the end but I still got there. Always a great read and I appreciate the titles. Can't wait to read the next book!
A mystery man clad in Ninja-like black, is heading for a showdown at the site of an illegal dog-fight, where a waiting accomplice concludes the secretive man's revenge, before both slip away unnoticed.
But what is this to do with the hunt for Jack Reacher I hear you ask? Special FBI Agent Kim Otto may well be asking herself the same question, as she travels to the scene of Reacher's last 'intervention' before leaving the Army, in a nowheresville town where even the midnight train doesn't stop.
The action is seen through Otto's eyes, as she faces up to deceit and danger, in her 'now you see him, now you don't' attempts to pin down the elusive anti-hero, who somehow holds a fond place in the hearts of all the women he's loved and left behind.
Diane Capri is the crème de la crème of crime-thriller writers and as such deservedly rises to the top of the charts, especially with her The Hunt for Reacher series, of which Full Metal Jack is the latest and will undoubtedly become the best-selling to date, of any of her excellent 'Reacher'-based, Lee Child tribute stories.
Keep your coffee-pot on the boil, as once you get your copy of Diane Capri's Full Metal Jack you're sure to be up all night to finish this 5+ star winner!
Not a huge fan of writing reviews that go into plot twists and take away from the reading experience What I can say is that after 10 books in the Hunt for Reacher series Diane Capri has found a way to keep it fresh. By every book being lined up with a Lee Child one I’ve been able able to enjoy reading his originals again The main character in this series is named Agent Kim Otto. Everything about her is fantastic. The complete underdog. Barely 5’ she maintains the sharp wit and spunk of an agent. The secondary character Gaspar and the boss are always a welcomed addition to the book. What I really love are the one and done characters, they could be in the book for a chapter or ten chapters and I look forward to them. Diane’s descriptions of these folks are tremendous. The detail and the back history is always enjoyable. This series does not have to be read in order nor do you have to read the corresponding Reacher book, but it doesn’t hurt. As you can tell I’m a huge fan of this crossover series. It seems it’s only getting better and better
Special Agent Otto is sent to Carter’s Crossing, Mississippi by her boss, Cooper. Reacher was there 15 years ago because three young women had been brutally murdered and the method had pointed to specialist trained by the army. Now another young woman was killed in the same manner. It’s a ver good storyline but a few things I found unbelievable. Two men were murdered and thrown in a hole and set on fire. The sheriff has a difficult time getting ID on them. We know who they are because the author told when they were killed and we know they were military also foretold by the author. But the sheriff can’t know? If they are American military they would be wearing “dog tags”. ID tags were first issued in 1906 and the regulation has not changed in over 100 years.
Diane Capri has done an excellent job writing an ancillary to the Jack Reacher universe, with the blessing of Lee Child. Her books involve a hunt for Reacher by the FBI, for an unexplained purpose, that takes the protagonists to locations that were in Lee Child's original story, and weaves interesting side tales to get the reader a new perspective on Reacher. When she began, I figured she would have about 4-5 books in her series before moving on, but Capri seems intent upon following Reacher around the country. This was another good story from this author. If you like Jack Reacher, then this is the only side author writing Reacher books worth reading. I could almost see Child having written these side events, as they keep the atmosphere very close to each other.
perhaps my favorite "hunting for Jack Reacher" Diane Capri novels thus far, Kim is sent to backwater Mississippi town fifteen years after Reacher solved the most recent murder there. the Army worried that the cut throat style killing pointed to a nearby school for Rangers. a very good yarn with some mystery to it and some nefarious characters and events.
Gaspar is ever helpful working from his remote workstation, presumably on the dime of his new employer. a promising new partner appears, also helpful and the mayor, who was Reacher's lover and the county sheriff back in the day, also adds a lift.
Agent Otto is still very much in the dark about Reacher and why her Boss is so compulsed about him.
Kim Otto’s hunt for Jack Reacher continues in this exciting new book. This book begins in a way that I could not see how it would relate to either Kim or Jack. Being a fan of this author, I knew I would be in for a lot of twists and turns before it would all come together. Kim seems to be more on her own, but I love how Gasper (her retired former partner) is still featured although he is behind the scenes. He is a great character! Kim is sent to a military base where a crime has taken place that is like a crime that appears to have ended his military career and off the radar lifestyle. This is the best of the series so far and I cannot wait for the next one!
The Reacher (Lee Child) novel this is based on is “The Affair” which is one of my favorites, so I really liked this book. I’ve always been fascinated by what happens to a town or its people after Reacher leaves. Ms. Capri answers that question in a fascinating, fast-moving, and fun to read style. Agent Otto, the protagonist, has evolved over the course of the books so that she now possesses a wariness that didn’t exist in the early stories. Its good character development that keeps the reader guessing and adds depth to Ms. Otto and the story. If you like Reacher, this is a good book to have an affair with.
I love this series. I am a big Lee Child fan and when Diane started this series I was thrilled. Each book adds to the legend of both Jack Reacher and Kim Otto. This thirteenth book might be the best one yet. I particularly enjoyed the complex story line that enthralled me. I almost forgot to be wondering when Reacher would appear. Typically strong writing and great asides from Gaspar fell exactly right to tie it to the past stories and now the expectation of a new partner to whet the appetite for the next. As always, I wish it were already available.
Once again, Capri has managed to write a twisted plot that kept me enthralled till the end. FBI Special Agent Kim Otto is still on the hunt. There are so many twists and turns throughout this storyline. It is so entertaining and exciting. Kim is such a strong character. I’m enjoying this series and highly recommend it if you are one of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher fans. This review is based on a complimentary pre-release copy from the author
The elusive Jack Reacher. FBI agent Otto is sent to a small town where the Amry military base is in the process of closing. Permanently. Jack Reacher has a history there with the mayor and the general in charge of closing the base. Will he make an appearance? The general has a counterfeit operation. He's closing up the shop and bodies are piling up. This is another excellent read by Diane Capri in the Reacher series. Enjoyed immensely!!
Great story! I love the way these are written. Kim and Gaspar, still a team, lead by the Boss, into something that always ends up to be other than what they thought! The adventures are always exciting and interesting. The Reacher connection always keep them digging. This one even mentioned my home territory of Rapid City, South Dakota. Loved it!
A fast-paced story, in that the entirety of the book takes place in <3 days.
Capri dangles little bits, even dropping in, "...yeah, Reacher saved me" and making references to something that happened 15 years ago, cementing the idea that the story IS about finding him.
The next few books will probably follow the same setups and exits, just in a different place in the nation, with The Boss flinging Otto about at his whim.
When she pushes back, I anticipate it'll be well-written.
I couldn't put this down! I finished it in one day! Diane has a masterful way, of telling a story. She keeps the reader enthralled. The hunt for Reacher series, is one of the best I've ever read. Full Metal Jack, might be the best one yet! I've said it before, I'll say it again, if you haven't read this series, you definitely should. It does NOT disappoint!
Another book by Diane Capri where the focus is on finding Jack Reacher. He's basically never found, or someone has a glimpse but can almost never say for sure if it were he or not. The story was good but predictable. There is always another story within the main story which makes reading the book interesting.
Better than the last of the "Hunt" series that I read over the summer, but still not as good as the early ones. Kim is spending too much time looking for Reacher in the shadows. I'm also not sure of the point in retiring Gaspar when he is still involved. Like Deveraux as much as I did in the original, and enjoyed Perry and Greyson's addition. A decent vacation read, but nothing wow.
Love Jack Reacher( at least until Tom Cruise played him in the movies), and have read all of Lee Child’s books. I did not know about this series which makes use of the character without him being there. Enjoyed this book but it seems a bit unfair that it revolves around his character. Apparently this author is a friend of Childs. I do not plan to read the others in this series.
About the same with the plucky half-Vietnamese FBI aget Otto chasing Reacher. Some good small town, with a closing military base politics as well as some other small town BS.
Not everyone's cup of tea (none or minimal sex, sex is fade to black not porn-worthy, etc.) but if you enjoy the Reacher series you might like this series as well.
Another Jack Reacher fantastic story. Once again Kim has to search for Jack. Such suspense and action to keep you gripped. You keep hoping everything will be fine. I kept reading until I finished. Don’t miss out.
Nice and twisty addition to Diane Capri's Hunt for Jack Reacher series. Kim Otto is sent to Mississippi because Cooper thinks Reacher will show up there. Is he right? Otto doesn't know but she goes. Events happen quickly and the finale is explosive. Great series. Great read. Kim Otto rocks!
Diane absolutely excellent!!!! Couldn't have been a better read. You have definitely expanded Kim's horizon .I really like how you keep Gasper still involved in the story line. Keep up excellent job!!!! Love Otto and company. 5 stat plus. Thanks, Carl Clause
Another wonderful book from Diane Capri. Poor Kim Otto…no real partner…but that will change in the next book. She came so close this time to finding Reacher…she thinks. LOL Also, we learned a little about Kim's family. Full Metal Jack is book number 13 in the series.
I liked the book. The characters and plot were interesting. The action moves along pretty well. The plot is totally unrealistic but that is not why I read these type of books.
