Tooth & Claw #4

Bear Affection

Rate this book
They ended their high-school relationship on a messy, angry note. The hate they spouted then is enough to keep them apart forever, even if the eventful intervening decade apart isn’t.

Back in town after her New York dreams have crashed to pieces, Ashlyn wants to get her career back on track. Bumping into the ex she left behind is not on her agenda, especially when the ex in question has turned into some kind of Greek god lookalike. Ashlyn doesn’t need the distraction; she doesn’t need the guilt she feels over their bad breakup; and she certainly doesn’t need the reminder of how badly her life has gone wrong. She’s going to stay away from Mac.
If only he would stay away from her.

Mac loved Ashlyn back in high-school, and now that he’s a shifter, that attraction has only gotten stronger. Ashlyn avoids him, though, and he’s also lost contact with his inner bear. He’s losing time to it, and he can’t even shift to help explain to Ashlyn how he has changed. He has no idea what this means, but he knows he can’t offer Ashlyn a mutilated piece of himself. He doesn’t want her in danger if the bear is out of control, either.
Maybe it would be best for everyone if his pack puts him down.

The last book in the Tooth & Claw series, Bear Affection, is a steamy romance with a satisfying happily-ever-after that makes it a great read either on its own or with the other books in the series. This latest from Emilia Hartley is best for adult readers.

When Mac’s best friend Colton met his mate, he began to feel like a third wheel. What a surprise he gets when his ex-girlfriend Ashlyn arrives back in town after 10 years away. The attraction between the pair begins to grow, but Mac is unsure if Ashlyn will be able to accept his bear. The issues Mac encounters with his bear and Ashlyn’s attempts to stay away from Mac, makes for a humorous tale of second chances. I really enjoyed this story and ended up purchasing a copy.

Emotional and Entertaining!!

Ashlyn moved away years ago to pursue her career; leaving her boyfriend Mac behind. Mac has changed while she’s been away. He is now muscled, chiseled – and a bear. Ashlyn has lost her job and come back to lick her wounds and work in a similar job, from home.

She is puzzled that Mac is kind instead of holding a grudge. But she knows he is hiding something. A big furry surprise of something. Love the progression of this story and its resolution. This entire series is a delight!

Ashlyn Barclay just returned home after an eight year absence. Ashlyn didn't expect to run into Mac Douglas, who sets her heart a flutter, just being near him. For Mac, there's not one woman for him ~Ashlyn. Mac is having trouble with his 🐻 bear but not sure why? Can Mac tell Ashlyn the truth about himself? Will Ashlyn believe Mac? What's wrong with Mac's bear 🐻? Find out in Bear Affection.

Bear's Affection was honestly an enjoyable book, I started reading as soon as got it and did not put it down till I was finished. I recently found Emilia Hartley's books my first book from her actually was the first book in this series; 'Dragon Desire'. I loved he style of writing from then and went in search of more of her books. I found myself frustrated with Ashyln - the female main character for about the first four chapters because I could not relate nor did I want to relate to her, and her treatment of Mac -the male MC in the past had me wanting better for him, If I was part of their world I would have slapped her, but of course I know the heart wants what it wants, and his forgiving nature despite their past was so heart-warming. I was so relieved when she finally took a look inside herself and realized that she was at fault for most of it and, she became more human in my eyes. My heart really hurt for Mac because *spoiler* he was so lost and confused after the retreat of his bear, his other half, he had me wishing that everything would just right itself quickly because he had suffered enough in my eyes, and Ashlyn's diva moments didn't really help him through it. Of course I don't expect any sane human being to willing accept that shifters exist and readily believing it when they are told, so her reaction was very human. Me, as the reader would know what to expect when it's a shifter novel so I'd want her to accept him and move on to the good times but that would take away the slice of reality aspect. I loved that Ashlyn is trying to become a writer, it makes me feel through the her, the author's thoughts and feelings, her doubts and challenges shone through the FMC and made the book more enjoyable for me. The sexual tension was palpable between the two main characters and when they finally made love it leaves the readers with a sense of satisfaction as well, the author definitely knows what women want and need from a man in bed and she iterates it so effortlessly that it paints a vivid picture in the reader's mind. This book was well-written, realistic and so sweet, sexy and romantic. I loved that the story was compact enough that
I didn't get bored and long enough to cover all the bases, all it all it was an amazing book and was definitely worth the read.

Okay say goodbye to the past and hello to the future...
by and1515

Ashlyn, loved the fact she could work from just about any location but soon realized the noise wasn't really conducive to getting anything achieved and she probably should have known better.
Just like she should have realized that she'd been a blind fool when it came to that lying jerk. And now Ashlyn was starring at someone from her past.
Mac had been shocked when he saw her sitting there he'd honestly thought she was in the big city working at some big fancy schmancy job. Shot she couldn't dump him fast enough heck he still felt the stings from the burn marks she left.
And of course he's big burly side kick could care less the damage she'd done didn't matter so much to him nope he wanted what he thought belong to them.
Picking up her things she quickly left however today wasn't her day because nothing was going right.
Mac did what anyone would do and that was rescue someone stranded in a ditch.
Clearly seeing him again had but a big wrench in her work she seriously couldn't concentrate. He never could grasp why Ashlyn been so ecstatic when she'd received that job offer in the big city.
Seriously she couldn't seem to escape his for the love of cheese and sanity everytime she turned around.
Yeah Mac knew he was totally toast but he simply didn't want to explain why he was buck...
But honestly things were just to weird and she just knew he was keeping some big secret and when she flat out asked what she thought made sense he still wouldn't answer her so she left.
Nothing screams alternative reality then the two of them especially with the fact they had all the answers and she had none leaving her guessing again.
Okay some how they ended up knocking boots and boy howdy he'd totally knocked her poor socks off and had her screaming his name.
Ashlyn couldn't figure out why he wouldn't tell her what was really bothering him but she knew deep down he needed help but she didn't know what to even try so finally she did the one thing she could.

Ashton is coming back home after living in the city. She was upset with herself for some things she had done. She felt guilty and unworthy. One of those things was leaving Mac. She had dreams and he didn't stand in her way. She wished he had followed her or tried hard to get her to stay. Mac went on a journey of discovery, only he found a black bear that bit him and changed his life forever. She didn't expect the first person she saw when back in town was Mac. She didn't recognize him at first. He never stopped loving her but then his bear went "missing. Can he find his bear or will he have to be put down? Can they both put the past behind them? Will they feel worthy enough to be loved? What happens when the bear takes over? Will she believe him when it matters?I am leaving this review for having received the ARC but I do so gladly because this story is an awesome read. Emilia Hartley has created a world where shifters are real and they will do almost anything for their fated mate. The characters are well written and feel like you could be friends with all of them. The story is well written and the other books make each story even better, but can be read individually. The story is easily read and you loose track of time. You can't wait to see how it all unfolds but then you wish there was more. Her writing draws you into the world and you want to live there. Her books (and this book) are extremely enjoyable and are a great way to spend your time. I highly recommend this book and series, you will not be disappointed. Set back and get comfortable with Tooth and Claw books, I can't say enough about these books.

Ashlyn is back home after all her dreams went up in smoke. Her relationship broke down when her man refused to get a divorce from his wife and her job was lost when the company went bust!! So coming home after not making a name for herself was not the way she had planned it.
What could make it worse? Maybe bumping into her ex boyfriend!!! But Mac has changed he now looks like a wet dream of a mountain man with full beard.
Mac had never really got over losing Ashlyn. He should of gone after her not gone into the forest pretending to be a survivalist to try and get over the pain he felt when he lost Ashlyn. He thought he was going to dies when he came across a very angry black bear but thankfully he only got bit. But that one bite had changed his life forever. He was now a big black bear shifter and he wasn't sure if Ashlyn could ever except the changes in his life, that was if she ever came home to him. But he had bigger problems at the moment when his bear goes silent!!!!
Omg I really wanted to bang these two head's together, they are so perfect for each other but Ashlyn was still in pain for everything that had happened to her when she left. Her trust was ruined, she wasn't sure she wanted to lead Mac on and hurt him again. But mostly she was scared to take a chance on anything. Including living her dreams of being a writer.
The chemistry between Mac and Ashley is electric and you will find yourself laughing out loud when a confused naked man wakes. The banter between them is so much fun. It was a brilliant read totally amazing

Ashlyn is back home with her tail between her legs (figuratively speaking, she’s human) her job is gone, her boyfriend has gone back to the wife, and she’s got nothing there! But home is not where her heart is, she left with big dreams and a huge ego!
And the last person she needs to see is her ex! And he’s looking good.....
Mac can’t believe his childhood sweetheart is back. Is she back for good? What happened to her life in New York? No one knows, and Ashlyn isn’t telling anyone.
But how can he approach her when the bear inside him is screaming she’s his mate?!
Ashlyn knew him before the bear attack left him with a bear inside him.
But more than that, they didn’t exactly part on the best of terms. So how will he cope with her being back?
Oh dear! Another bear with issues! But when Mac shuts his bear away, the worse thing happens.....
The bear inside him disappears! He might not like the thing always clawing at him to get out, but he now misses him!
Have to admit, this wasn’t my favourite out of the series. I didn’t really like Ashlyn, and Mac just seemed consumed with getting rid of his bear, then trying to get him back!
But as they spent more and more time together, Ashlyn realises what she had right in front of her.
And Mac has to convince both his mate and his bear that he’s worth the effort.
But when Ashlyn assumes he’s lying to her, how can they move forward? No one turns into a bear! Right?

2.5 stars

We've seen Mac in the previous books and honestly I felt sorry for him in this book. It was clear he still loved his ex-girlfriend, that he had never gotten over her. Seeing her again causes old feelings to reemerge, but also causes issues with his beast. Ashlyn has come home to recover from a lost job and the end of a disastrous relationship. Soon she finds herself running into Mac at every turn, and as much as she want forget about their history, she finds herself drawn to him.

I felt like I was missing something from the previous breakup between Mac and Ashlyn. I didn't like Ashlyn, she had a relationship with a married man (knowing he was married) and then was surprised that the end of their relationship was so bad. Her actions repeatedly came across as selfish, she was so very focused on herself and what she wanted. I never felt like she and Mac were actually getting to know the new versions of themselves, it felt like so much of their new relationship was lust and what they knew about each other from high school. They didn't really seem to click until almost the end of the book, and then everything was just too rushed. I needed to see more of a connection between them, the story just relied too much on a "their mates" trope and it didn't work for me.

Ashlyn Barclay had been played, but she knew it was her fault. Karma was doing its job chasing her, making her suffer for her wrong behavior and losing everything she thought she had accomplished. Nothing more to do than return to her town where she would try to resume her life. But it seems that Karma was not going to release her grip, still tightening the rope in her neck because Mac Douglas was there to remind her of the mistakes she had made and for which she still had to pay. But Mac's thoughts were in another direction and he found himself struggling with his attraction and feelings for her and even more, his bear was not helping, at all, putting Mac in a dare situation. Too much to deal with! Mac was out of himself, afraid to lose all and discouraged waiting for the end. Drama queen! What a pair! Each one pinning and desperate for what they believed they could not have. Lack of communication and even of brain I would say! The other shifters might not know what was going on with Mac, but they were ready to help, and Mac should have understood and accepted it before. An entertaining story with strong emotions, some intriguing scenes and some amusing ones, camaraderie, romance and passion.

Ashlyn lost her company and her lover all in the same day. She moved back to her hometown and the first person she runs into is her ex-boyfriend. This can't be happening, can my life get any worse? But that didn't stop her from stealing glances his way. Mac's bear was roaring. That was something that had changed after she left. Ashlyn should of been his mate, but she dumped him to go to New York City. Now a small part of him held out hope for another chance. But Ashlyn wants to go back to being just friends. Now everywhere she goes, he's there. Mac is trying to woo her with his charm, but Ashlyn wants no part of it. Whatever they’d had was gone. Or was it? Ashlyn feels like she's missing something, but can't put her finger on it. Then odd things start to happen. For instance, there is a bear in her driveway and then Mac shows up naked and confused. When she asks Mac what is going on, he tells her he's not ready to talk about it. When things start to heat up between them, Mac knows he has to tell her, but is afraid she'll run. Will Mac be able to tell her before she finds out herself? Will Ashlyn except the truth or run back to NYC?

🔹️ Ashlyn Barclay is human and came back home from New York where she lost her job, they went bankrupt. The man that she was in love with, she realized he was just playing her. So back home she goes.

Hope, more than hope!

This emotional journey began eight years ago when Ashlyn dumped on Mac and left him to pursue her writing dream in New York. Now, she came back to town since everything for her went wrong and she made mistakes, that left her hurt deeply. Instead, Mac became a lovely and cherished man, with true feelings and deep struggles with his inner bear, wanting help without asking for. Together had the possibility of healing and overcoming their fears, for a second chance on love.

Emilia Hartley gave us a unique overview of a second chance between two characters, Mac a great dreamt guy, and Ashlyn who should grow up and faced painful truths lying in front of her, to deserve more in life. This romance had hesitation, turns, and twists, with a sweet bear ambiance. ¡A wonderful tricky reading!

It’s never too late for a second chance. Ashlyn left eight years ago to go to New York and follow her dream, leaving her boyfriend Mac behind. Now she’s back in her home town, her dream job gone and her lying boyfriend left behind in New York. On her first day back she sees Mac again and instead of being angry at her for leaving all those years, he’s nice and hints that he still cares for her. But she doesn’t believe happily ever after is in her future anymore. But they keep running into each other and Mac seems to have a problem. He keeps appearing at her house naked and not knowing how he got there. Does he have a drinking problem or is it something else? And what about the friendly black bear that keeps showing up on her property, rubbing up against her and sleeping by her door? He is way too good for her..........he needs to move on and find someone that deserves him

Bear Affection is the fourth book in the Tooth & Claw series and this story is about Mac and Ashlyn. This was a harder book for me to get through and I picked it up and put it down a few times along the way. I say this because I found myself wanting to kick Ashlyn in the butt and haul her around by her ear. I loved Mac as he is so nice, considerate and caring, along with being a big bear shifter who is all woolly and sexy.
I thought the story was nicely written but the story-line and Ashlyn just did not work for me. So in the end it was an okay book but disappointing to me, based on the previous books in this series.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Interesting ending to the series. Ashlyn is returning home to try to find her balance after being fired by her boss, Michael as he declares bankruptcy. Michael also dumps her as his side piece. She's been gone for 8 years. She left for NYC and left her boyfriend Mac. He did not take it well. He could never understand why she didn't invite him to go with her. In the meantime, Mac was bitten by a black bear and now is a shifter. He is still in love with Ashlyn and considers her his mate. So does his bear. Mac is the last of the group to find a mate. How does he tell Ashlyn about all the changes in their hometown? Will Ashlyn believe in the new residents? Dragons and bears and wolves, oh my! Fun story. Ends a bit abruptly. I'm hoping for another new series. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Mac was fantastic. I really liked him. He is a truly a beautiful soul with a really good heart but is having problems with his bear and I couldn't help my heart aching for him especially when he thinks his only option is to be put down. To be fair I wasn't Ashlyn's biggest fan in the beginning of the book. I think she was a little too fixated on the past and how things had gone down between them in the past. But as the book went on she grew on me. The characters are really well-crafted and the story had touches of humour, a bunch of angst, intense emotion and two people who need to learn to leave the past in the past and to forgive. Is Ashlyn the one who can help him control his bear or is he doomed?

Mac is lonely with everyone finding their mates. He is in town and he runs across “the one” from his past…Ashlyn. After eight years and a failed relationship, she is back home and she runs right into her ex! She tries everything to avoid him…but they keep running into one another. He has changed…he has a bear inside him now from being bitten. He lets Ashlyn know he still loves her…but she wants no part of it…until finally she lets herself be a part of it…but she does not believe him about being a bear shifter~ She even sees the bear on multiple occasions! There seems to be a problem with Mac…he is having blackouts when his bear takes over! How can he reconcile the bear, convince Ashlyn she is the one and make everything alright in the end? Mac is a bear shifter. He is the only main character in his pack who isn't mated. Before Mac became a shifter, he had been in love with a woman who left him to take a job in New York City, Ashlyn. She is an editor, manager of authors and wants to write her own book. Mac constantly fights with his bear and when he ran into Ashlyn, who was now back permanently from New York City, he pushes his bear down. Now there is a problem. He shows up at Ashlyn's house naked and doesn't know how he got there. He gets locked out of his house. He tries to tell Ashlyn that he is the black bear she keeps seeing, but she doesn't believe him. Will they be able to resolve this issue? Will Mac and his bear resolve their issues? This is a great ending to this series. I loved reading the whole series. Thank you. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of the book.

Not a fan of this book. The main characters, Ashlyn and Mac, had a lot of tumultuous feelings and self doubts to work through. I felt that Mac was too good for Ashlyn as she came off as selfish, thoughtless and mean. If it wasn’t for her being recognized as his mate, Ashlyn needed a swift butt kicking to get her head in the right place and recognize good guys when they’re practically throwing themselves at her undeserving self. The writing felt disjointed and not having a true focus. Certain points felt as if I’d missed paragraphs or something because the actions and words of characters didn’t flow or match up to previous actions. It just felt as if this couple got back together because of the way they broke up and Ashlyn being Mac’s mate.

Mac and Ashlyn where high school sweethearts that fell apart and went there separate ways but Mac never forgot his love for her and now that she is back in town after 10yrs and he’s a bear shifter and the pull to her is so much stronger but how does he explain that she is his mate.Ashlyn is back in town after her affair with her boss ended and she lost her job and when she runs into Mac again after all this time she is rude and nasty and treats him badly but he still wants her but she fights him at every turn. Ashlyn knows he is keeping a secret from her but just can’t find out what it is. Do I think these two should be together the answer is NO I think she is selfish and using him and I think he could do better but the heart wants what it wants. Overall I enjoyed this book anyway.

A little different, but a great read!

I liked the characters, especially Mac. He's so sweet and giving. He strikes me as one of the most sensitive male characters I've read about. I wasn't too sure about Ashley at first. She really seems to embrace her misery, but I came to like her further into the book. I liked the story line a lot. The idea of his bear being such a separate character was great. I have to say that by the end of the book, I came to feel that while the emotional angst of this couple was well described, a lot of it was unnecessary. For me, they were both a little too far out on the emotional spectrum. I am really enjoying reading Emilia's writing. I've been reading her books and following her on Amazon, and she's always a great read.

An awesome second chance adventure! After breaking his heart, leaving him behind, she returns home, he should hate her! He wants a mate, he is lonely, his bear is unpredictable, and unbelievable there she is! The characters are fantastic a grouchy (bear) shifter, a cute confused woman, his BFF, and his clan! Why doesn’t he hate her, why is he being so nice, did he just lie to her? Lots of chaos, misunderstanding, and misadventures cause confusion and mistrust! All the clues are there, why can’t she figure it out? Their emotions are so strong and real, you suffer along with them, you root for him, want to kick her...for being so dense (foolish human), and keep your fingers crossed she figures it out in time! Loved the ending!

Emilia's Tooth and Claw series has been an excellent read. I enjoyed all 4 books, the plots and characters are excellent. With this last book though, Ashlyn was a little self centered to begin with. However, Mac and Ashlyn were high school sweethearts. After graduation Ashlyn moved away and broke Macs heart. Now. a decade later she is back in the small hometown she grew up in and finds herself still in love with Mac. Mac has changed during the 10 yrs. Ashlyn has been gone, but he still loves her. Can Mac tell Ashlyn about the changes, will she stay or run away? Looking forward to reading more books by Emilia Hartley.

I really like Emilia Hartley's style of writing and was excited to read her next novel. However, at first I was so disappointed in the actions of Ashlyn that I almost didn't finish the book. No spoilers but to say I was dismayed by her choices since leaving would be an understatement. I am glad I did because I really love Mac and Ashlyn together and there is plenty of steam. Redemption is hard but she realized her mistakes and was really there for Mac at the end. Colton and Summer add just the right touch to help these two make their way back to each other and I love the twist about Mac's bear and his interactions with Ashlyn.

I like Mac in the previous books, but loved him here. This book provided a real look at the other half of the "Mac and Cheese" duo. The friendship between Mac and Conner continued to stand out and stand strong here. After watching his best friend find a mate, Mac finally gets a second chance with the woman he was sure of even before he became a shifter. Now that she is back he cannot deny she is his mate, but cannot seem to find a way to explain how different he really is from what she remembers when she left town. Now I have to say I was not a fan of Ashlyn, but she grew on me. Great second chance story.

As the last book in the series, it was also well written and great character development. Ashlyn came back to her hometown after her supposedly dream job was gone along with her relationship with the married owner. It didn't take her too long to realize all her wasted time. She was very cautious about Mac, her high school love. She didn't have it in her to give her heart then have it stomped on. Mac never forgot Ashlyn and still loved her but he was a shifter now and found it difficult to tell her about this change to his life. They were both able to work through their issues together and reignite their love for each other. I hope the author will write a holiday book with an update on all the characters.

Bear Affection, Tooth and Claw, Book 4 by Emilia Hartley.

I've loved the shifters of Upstate New York ,and Mac's story was no different. With things going on its taken me awhile to catch up ! Max has been in my the list for some time and I'm so glad I had the time to read it!
Mac was turned , about 10 years ago, after his long-term girlfriend left to start her career as a literary agent in New York city! She left him to pursue her dreams and he was devastated when she left.
Ashlyn doesn't believe in fate, she believes that only she can write her future, and as she thinks her past was a disaster, she doesn't think she deserves anything better.
A great story, well told! It's been a great series. I can thoroughly recommend this author to all PNR livers.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Bear Affection by Emilia Hartley is the fourth book in the Tooth and Claw series. I really enjoyed Mac and Ashlyn's story. Who hasn't ever wondered about the one they left behind. Emilia Hartley captures the angst of love thought lost and the possibility of second chances. The story is sweet and spicy (Mature Readers Only), with a touch of drama and dry humor. The characters are so easy to love, warts and all. I really like that the pack is an integral part of story, even though the focus is Mac and Ashlyn. A fun read with a great surprise to make you smile!
