When polio steals Jeanne’s mobility as a toddler in 1928, her family assumes the girl is bound for an uneventful life unable to leave the comfort and safety of her small town in Pennsylvania. They didn’t realize they were up against the force of Jeanne’s unwavering grit and formidable spirit. Based on the true life of Jeanne Gildea, “A Long Way From Blair Street” follows the wondrous life of a disabled woman who undergoes a radical surgery, faces the odds, moves to Washington D.C., and triumphs despite her limitations. Decades before female empowerment became the movement we know today, Jeanne navigates difficulties—both small discomforts and more tectonic disruptions—of working in a male-dominated industry. She’s content—mostly—but also longs for the love and passion she sees in the movie posters she collected as a young woman. This biographical novel explores themes of family dynamics and expectations, self-fulfillment, and the will to overcome. Through the lens of twentieth century America, “A Long Way From Blair Street” is a coming-of-age story whose central lesson is acceptance and the power of never giving up.
Jen Craven is the author of upmarket women's fiction, where one decision changes everything. The author of two historical fiction novels, "Best Years of your Life" is her debut contemporary work. She writes from northwestern Pennsylvania, where she lives with her family.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started this book, however 6 hours later and here I am, in tears. A Long Way From Blair Street has everything you could want from a main character. Her fierce determination to overcome every obstacle placed in her way should be used as a model for all young girls. I already can't wait to read it again!
I adore this book. A neighbor lent me a copy and I wasn’t able to put it down. The strength that Jeanne holds inside is incredible. The author writes beautifully and I was able to imagine everything just as it was. I look forward to reading more from the author.
Such a lovely story from a debut author. Jennifer Craven took the life story of her Great Aunt Jeanne and helped readers everywhere fall in love with her and her strength through the difficulties she grew up with. It is clear by this novel that she was loved by so many people. This was a quick read and I really enjoyed it!
