Hellgate Guardians #1

Grave Mistakes

Rate this book
It’s never a good combo to be broke and desperate. You do stupid things. Like accidentally sign your soul over to Hell.

When I interviewed for a new security job, I didn’t bat an eye that it was for a literal graveyard shift...headstones and all. I mean, at the hourly rate they were offering, who cares? I got this.

Turns out, I’m not guarding a graveyard like I thought. It seems I’ve just walked my broke ass into protecting a Gate to Hell. Yeah…I don’t got this.

Now I’m stuck in a terrifying new reality: a group of hot demons who act like I can solve all their problems, and a battle between good, evil, and balance.

This will seriously teach me to read the fine print on Help Wanted ads. Good thing this job comes with a scythe. Maybe I can use it to stop them from dragging my ass into Hell.

Ivy Asher is addicted to chai, swearing, and laughing a lot (but not in a creepy, laughing alone kind of way). She loves the snow, books, and her family of two humans, and three fur-babies. She has worlds and characters just floating around in her head, and she's lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people who support that kind of crazy.

2005

This book reads like it was written in 2005 by a 40+ woman who thinks that Top Gun was high art, some ‘90’s tv show with Tim Allen was the funniest show they’d ever seen, and Mystikal is the best musician. Everything about the book feels dated and more than a little pathetic.

The female character, Delta Gates, is an utter lackwit. If I were to choose a pop cultural reference that describes dim-bulb Delta, she would be Zooey Deschanel at the height of her manic pixie dream girl popularity with purple hair, vacillating between crying, panic attacks, falling asleep, and sex fantasies that she says aloud like she has perverted Tourette’s for the first half of the book. Forget Buffy, Delta is a drippy damsel. And I am not normally one to find profanity off-putting, but at least 10% of the books is just every possible variation of virtually every American English curse word, only for Delta to primly denounce another character as “crass”. That’s kind of the root of the problem with co-written books, though. One author has the character constantly thinking and talking about @n@l and the other has her clutching her pearls, swatting at the man who used the bad word. One character has the character kicking @ss and the other has her falling down in a heap of snot. It makes the character seem bipolar and/or schizophrenic.

In terms of the plot, there is none. Delta may or may not be some kind of demon. What kind? No one knows. The authors wait until the last paragraph of the book to decide and while they digress to all kinds of graphic sex fantasies, they don’t bother explaining the alternate universe beyond mentioning that there are 5 rings of Hell. If it’s anything like Dante’s Inferno, they don’t mention it one way or the other. That’s as far as the authors get in a book that is supposed to be about the gatekeepers to the gates of Hell. That is the start and end of how far they get into the discussion of Hell or demons or anything else. They spend more time discussing the details of Delta taking a shower than establishing that the book takes place in a different universe.

(27/07/24) (Doing a reread of this series as initially I stopped after book two. I've now acquired the physicals so I'm now revisiting the series to hopefully complete it.)

I loved this book there wasn’t anything here that I didn’t like and from the instant i picked this up I was transfixed and found myself constantly laughing out loud throughout. This has such a vein of humour running through it as well as numerous pop culture references that I totally appreciated.
It's the first book in a series and it’s paranormal reverse harem. Delta Gates was such a unique character with such a sarcastic relatable persona. I bloody loved her and her inner monologue she was definitely one of a kind.

Down on her luck she takes a job that seems too good to be true, without reading the small print, plunging her into a whole new paranormal world when she discovers she’s actually a Demon. Instead of the security job guarding a private graveyard she was expecting she’s actually been hired to guard an actual gate from hell.
Her new employers are all Demons and they are gate guardians but with the gate in question failing and Delta being more powerful than they had originally realised they want her for a fifth they just need to discover just what power ring she’s from and that requires a trip to hell which Delta is so not on board with.

So the demons are Rafferty or iceman he’s blue with horns and runs cool in temperature he’s the ultimate boss man and he definitely has a protective soft spot for Delta.
Then we have Echo pale with white buzzed hair and shadow tattoos he’s mischievous and naughty and a massive flirt and makes his interest known straight away.
Crux looks like a surfer dude and is incredibly sweet and protective he also has a very unique tongue. Finally, Jerif is the asshole of the group he’s snarky and bad-tempered delighting in insulting Delta at every turn but he’s still strangely possessive at the same time.

Initially, Delta wants nothing to do with being a gate guardian she’s in freak out mode burying her head in the sand until she really just can’t anymore and has to put on her big girl pants and deal.
This had plenty of chemistry and it cranked up the tension beautifully keeping the intensity sizzling all the way through. This also ended on a cliffhanger and oh my it was a heart in throat one I have all my fingers and toes crossed that a certain someone is going to be all right. I will definitely be picking up the next one in the series.

This was well written and extremely enjoyable this is a collaboration and it’s the first thing I’ve read by either of these authors and got to say I’m impressed I will definitely be checking out both their back catalogues in the future.
I’m excited to see where this goes next and I totally recommend this it was way better than anticipated.

13 REASONS WHY I HATED THIS BOOK ( I won't write 13 of them, 3 will suffice)

---Too much cursing words or unsavory images !! Unnecessarily
I don't need every sentence to have the word f**k in it or a variation.

One example so you get the gist of it:
“It feels like Satan’s asshole out here after he’s had fiery diarrhea. What the fuck?”

---There isn't much happening in this book everything is very slow and there is too much description.

---At least 70% of this book described the heroine freaking out, in denial of her nature as a demon, saying she wants an orgasm, wants to have sex with the guys !🙄

THIS BOOK CAN BE SUMMED UP BY ONE WORD: SHALLOW !!

Well this is a mixed bag. On one hand I did get some chuckles, and on the other I had a lot of eye rolls.

So I will say this-I enjoyed the beginning of the story. I found my self laughing at the quick quippy dialogue and Delta was spouting some serious gems. I also enjoyed her spastic humor and one liners for the most part-But damn- reading the reviews on this book some people were not feeling the crude humor or throwback references. Yikes.

description

Yeah, I agree that some of the stuff Delta says can be considered crass, and she was constantly thinking about sex...but I'll be honest in that I didn't mind for the most part.

For me I was just sitting there reading her talking about wanting at least 10 inches down south and thinking....Giirrrl we got a size queen over here and Damn she really shaded Johnny Depp's ass and Tom Cruise freaks me out too...

description

With that said, even for moi- after Delta started to hang around the guys I got less interested in the book. The flirting and innuendos just turned kind of cheesy (but honestly nothing new for most of the RH books I've read. -->IE: traitorous body line, the goofy nicknames, the constantly horny dialogues...you get the gist...)

But what I really wasn't feeling was the fraidy cat moments, the cry baby scenes, and the constant clumsiness that lead to potential death more than once just made me eye roll.

Yeah I can see the anger at being expected to take on a role you never asked for and being overwhelmed, but I mean how can you be a complete badass one min- mowing down and dusting baddies- and the next you can't even walk down some damn stairs with out dying and needing to be rescued? Iyiyi.

description

So yeah, I was feeling the potential but don't think I'll read the next one. However, if you like typical RH this might be up your alley- I just didn't have much fun towards the end.
Also, I will say I don't think it was all that bad as the reviews were saying- just nothing new.

Ok book

The beginning was good then the middle with her oh poor me I can't do anything got so annoying. I had to stop reading cause the book was making want to jump in and slap her. I did eventually get to the end and it does get better. I don't think I am going to read anymore of this series.

Down on her luck and needing a new job Delta Gate seeing an add for a security guard with an amazing hourly rate thinks she's hit the jackpot, what she doesn't realise is that the job involves protecting a Gate to Hell- hence the amazing hazard pay and benefits.

I was really enjoying this at the start, there were some funny moments but then things kinda got lacklustre/sluggish for me. I wasn't entirely keen on some of the interactions between Delta and the 4 hot demons. The disregard for her safety when did not work for me. Lots of heavy flirting between Delta and the 4 demons in book one but that's it (in this book I didn't feel any type of strong connection between them which sucked).

Spoilers ahead, 2.5* hesitantly rounded up for now

28 year old waitress Delta is struggling, since the death of her parents she's barely been able to stay afloat. Wen a ONS obtains her bank details she rapidly becomes broke and desperate. She's got bills piling, a wrecked hpuse she's trying to DIY repsir and she's about to be jobless. A n ad for a security officer with grear pay and benefits seems like a dream come true. Only on her first night she meets four sexy guys who gurn out to be demons, now they want to make Delta their fifth guardian but they need to know what level of demon she is and the only way to discover this is by going to Hell

********
This started off pretty good, the h is hilarious and I enjoyed being in her head. She reminded me of the h From the cupidity series....but things went a bit downhill from there. Delta wasn't just hesitant in her new role, which could be understandable but she acted like a coward and this entire book was basically just the guys trying to convince her to find her lady balls and honestly that's just not what I hoped for in my h.

The guys are almost mirror reflections of the guys from the cupidity series as well. One is a jokester and the good ole boy of the group, one is interested in sex, one is the serious leader of the and the other is a gigantic asshole who constantly puts her down. We don't quite get a feel for the guys yet especially as we don't get their POV

Cliffhanger
RH though no real sex as yet

***just as I hate when I'm constantly reminded of a manwhore hero's past it's the same for my h. Sexual confidence and freedom is fine but I really don't need to be frequently reminded that the h is no stranger to ONS or that she's got no problems with casual sex. This is a personal preference and seriously irked me here.

I've enjoyed books from Ivy Asher and Raven Kennedy, so when I spotted that they had a series out together, it seemed like a no-brainer.

My rating of four stars is probably on the generous side - really, this book was like watching a train wreck. On paper, it has a lot of cliches that I don’t typically enjoy, but it was so hard to look away.

This book begins with Delta, a down-on-her-luck bartender searching for a new job. She comes across an ad for security of a graveyard that pays well and immediately applies. It turns out the job is to join a group of demons as their fifth to guard a hell gate. Secrets are uncovered; and there are horns, shadow hands and a forked tongue...

I flip-flopped between enjoying Delta and not liking her at all. At times she was incredibly shrill and couldn't have a single thought without it pouring out of her mouth - I kept willing her to be patient, to stop making assumptions and jumping to conclusions at every turn. Still, at the same time, she was fun and an engaging POV to explore this new world alongside.

The dynamic between the guys was mostly interesting, but it took me a minute to settle into who was who. I think the next book could have some great spice but there wasn’t much in this one.

Overall, this wasn't bad. Just cheesy at times, and it took a while for the story to get going and hook me. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I plan to read book two. I listened to the audiobook and thought the narration was excellent. I think, for me, I just expected a bit more from the authors that gave us The Lost Sentinel and The Plated Prisoner series.

Prefacing this by saying that I will read ANYTHING that Raven Kennedy writes. I'm obsessed with her Plated Prisoner, Heart Hassle, and Pack of Misfits series--they're all amazing, and they have me working through her backlog.

This book was my least favorite by her so far. Usually, I love Raven Kennedy's FMCs. They're always either funny or at least strong and likable. In this book, I thought that Delta was actually pretty annoying. She's "snarky" in a bad way. I love a sassy funny FMC, but Delta is just snarky in a way where she's kind of a jerk/rude/obnoxious/whiney.

There was also a part of this book that completely repeated itself again. Delta finds out she's a demon, freaks out and runs away for a couple weeks, and then eventually goes back to the demon men. That cycle happened on her first night on the job, and then it happens again after she goes back the 1st time and they take her to hell, and she freaks out again being like OMG I'M A DEMON! ...I'm like, girl, we already went over this for the last 50 pages. The plot just completely repeated itself and I was bored of it. Ok, we get it, she's a demon and she's scared and she misses her parents, let's move on with the plot.

That said, I will probably read the next book. I really liked the demon men, and I think I like the overarching plot. It's Ivy Asher and Raven Kennedy, so it's still a well-written book, and it's funny at times. I'm giving the next book a shot to see if it starts moving a bit faster and if Delta gets any better. We'll see!

Interesting, fun, and funny read! The only reason it’s not five stars is because the main character was extremely aggravating. Her favorite saying was “It wasn’t my fault”. However I am able to get over that and I will be reading the second book.

DNF @77%

Why do I keep disliking the heroines of the recent books I've been trying to read? Are my expectations too high? Or are they just really that lack luster?

The heroine of this book is so completely shallow and horny, she's attracted to anything with a moving body and a pulse. I'm all for reverse harems, but it completely turns me off when the heroine gets attracted to people outside of the potential harem and you can't really tell who are actually going to be in the harem. Is that hyporcritical of me? Possibly... But I can't help it.

This heroine seemed pretty funny at first but her annoying whininess got old FAST. It was certainly different and refreshing that she didn't jump in to her new life immediately after learning about it, but her impulsiveness was a turn off most of the time. Due to all this, I stopped reading after she decides to come home for "emotional reasons" after JUST learning how bad it is when the gatekeepers are not nearby to guard their gates. That level of selfishness? No, just no.

Also I just learned that the 3rd book is about a whole new bunch of characters with an even more annoying heroine, so it's just better to cut my losses now.

Overly bratty, ignorant and rude H

Whoa, I could not finish this read. I'm a bit shocked since I absolutely love raven kennedy! But the H delta is a complete bratty Moron. I hated her from the start. At first I didn't like how she just babbled on like a weirdo. First day on the job and she has zero professional skills asking questions and saying weird stuff. She seemed completely blond? Then as the story goes on we are dealing with a crazy person! She just is a hot mess. Freaking out, screaming, getting angry! Stomping her foot and blaming the demons for w.e is going on with herself. She is rude, judgy, at over the top hot headed. She runs then gets upset that they didn't come and get her? Then when they explain that they aren't freaking kidnappers " what kinda demons do you take us for " one of them says! and she just insults them because well since their demons they are automatically bad horrid things! This character was all over the place crazy.

First of all! I laughed so much! The FMC is hilarious, I wasn't sure about her in the beginning, but her antics, reactions! The fainting, the ash in mouth 🤣
She can come off as bratty, but that's part of her charm. Even her stubbornness at the wrong thing is just part of who she is. She's not perfect. She's her, and she's strong in her way for what she's been through. She's also annoying, and again, I would not have it another way.
The MMCs we are still getting to know, but there's sweet, spice, dark, and asshat. They have a job to do, and I do like the attraction between them and Delta. It's not insta-love, but it is insta-lust, even with the non human element, and given you know she's not what she seems you can tell that part of her drives her needs and emotions a lot.

The spice is steamy, from dirty talk to well you will see. And when it actually happens, the smut is gonna be good too.
I don't think there is any pull between the guys besides being brothers in arms, but book 1 is mostly intro and discovery.

It ends on a cliffhanger, and I want more laughs, more antics, and more steam. so, onto book 2 for me. I am invested in this from book 1, I just hope it is overall a great series!

Series review, same posted for book 4. No spoilers

I loved this story but...
1. I wish it was not told the way it was. I think I would have appreciated it more if it was one or two books told from multiple povs, especially of the sisters. The way the story is delivered, with separate books per sister, didn't work very well for the plot.
2. Again, I felt like the 4th book also needed the multiple povs to cover the other events where Sable was not there. With such a rich multi-dimensional plot, the delivery felt a bit one sided. It was a bit frustrating wondering what everyone else was up to.
3. I hated that after the epic battle with Morax, I had to go back to the mundane life of Sable. Not that I didn't want to know about it, it just felt meh and kind of a very long extended epilogue. I wish the story ended shortly after the high of the battle.

This is a very good story but the flow and the delivery could have been better.

Not what I expected from this duo

First, it took me 9 days to read this book. Coming from someone who normally reads a book every other day, that’s saying something. I just couldn’t get into this book.

Now, let’s talk about Delta. To me she was immature, whiny, and annoying. I didn’t find her panic attacks and running away endearing, I thought she was just childish for 28. She acted more like a 16 year old with her temper tantrums and outbursts than a grown woman in my opinion. I didn’t care for her character at all. The other characters were mildly interesting. Rafferty, Jerif, Echo, and Crux had potential but I just couldn’t get past Delta. I personally just didn’t like the character.

This book just wasn’t my cuppa, which sucks because I love this duo and waited until all 4 books were released so I could binge...however, I won’t be binging this series. It got exciting the last few pages but not exciting enough to keep reading. I will have to pass on the rest of this series.

Crave mistakes (Book 1)
3⭐️

▪️Paranormal Romance
▪️RH

We Meet Delta gates, who's down on her luck and in need of a job and some money. She applies to a security job which turns out to be a job guarding the gates to hell. Her guys are in charge of protecting the gate.

I'm not keen on Delta she's in denial and just wants everything to fall into her lap. She's so rude to the guys when they guard her even though she's refused to help them. She wants to go back to her normal life, why? She had nothing in her normal life, why continue to live a lie.

MMC's all demons
Jerif- described as having onyx skin, orange hair that looks like it's on fire.
Echo- tattoos which move, white hair and pale.
Crux- typical surfer look, blonde long hair, green eyes and tanned.
Iceman- A massive blue demon with horns and crystals going down his spine.

I can't decide if I liked this or not. At the beginning I was laughing and enjoying this. Towards the end the denial and anxiety attacks were just annoying me.

This was a fun and interesting start to a new series. I didn’t find it as fun and hilarious as I’m used to from raven Kennedy but she never holds back on snarky, independent and clumsy as hell heroines lol. Though to be honest I found the heroine Delta a bit of a scaredy cat and wimp which was a big disappointment. She likes to compare herself to Xena quite often and yet she rarely lives up to even a smidge of badassery. The book ends on a huge cliffy and I’m so glad I waited till the series is complete to read it. We’re left with sooooo many unanswered questions regarding who and what Delta is. What starts out as she assumes as a simple security job guarding a graveyard turns into so much more than she bargained for. Hoping in the next book her kinky dreams will become a reality, that is if everyone can survive a trip through hell.

Okay this book was a little slow in the beginning and I was losing interest fast but I stuck with it and I'm happy that I did!

There were some serious LOL moments that just tickle me so... Anyway, if you decide to read this book, you'll need to have a little patience for chapters 1-3 and then it will start to get better and better... So now I'm off to book 2 of this series.

Grave Mistakes is the first installment within the Hellgate Guardians series.

If you have read any other book of Ivy's or Raven's, then you sort of know what kind of formula they work with when it comes to writing their RH romances. Of course, the main character is some sort of clumsy girl but very independent and uses her sarcasm and snark for weapons.

That being said, I wasn't completely surprised by our main character, Delta, one bit. She did annoy me a lot and that was weird to experience. For most of the book, she just seemed to let me down because she kept wanting to be some big bad ass but would continue to be the opposite. Maybe things will change, and she will get better in the next book? Right now, I'm not holding my breath.

Other than that, I did think some of what happened was interesting, but it also left me with a ton of unanswered questions. Again, hoping I get those in the next book or future books within the series. I'm just hoping that things get better overall.

Delta Gate is hilarious!

Have you ever read a sentence in a book so good that you read it again just to fully appreciate it?
I did that a ton in this book.
I laughed out loud a lot reading this. Next thing I know, I'm sitting at the edge of my seat frantically checking how close to the end I am and hoping like crazy I had more pages until the end.
Delta Gate was an awesome FMC and the guys were everything I love in an RH series.
Ivy Asher and Raven Kennedy are damn good writers all on their own, but with their creative powers combined, they're pure magic.
I'm sad that I don't already have the second book ready to go, but relieved that I dont have to wait too much longer. It looks like the entire series will be finished and published by the end of July, which is amazing.
This is the type of series I'll reread again and again after the next book comes out until it's over.
Definitely adding to my "waiting for more" list.

I struggled with this one, and it was mostly because of the main character. I had no problem with her slightly crude comments, and I actually laughed at a few of her pop cultural spaz moments. My issue was Delta's cowardice. Her continued denial and fear, was annoying to me. I understand the initial fear when faced with the supernatural. I understand the need to separate and process. But it becomes a theme in the book (fear of the boat, fear of gators, fear of hell, of falling...). The last scene could've been her moment to shine, but her running away (and the resulting cliffhanger ending) pretty much closed this series for me.

The other point I struggled with was the immediate attraction to the demons. I realize this is not a fault of the story, but with my ability so understand the attraction.

Gates of furry

My review has a few but not many spoilers just fyi .....

I for one have got to say Delta is seriously on a relatable level when it comes to finding out your heritage. I mean seriously who is just gonna be like oh ok yup I'm a demon thats cool. No she takes time to process and freaks out over stuff like ANYONE would. I felt her as a character that I could relate to on a freak the heck out scale if I ever found out I was a demon. As always Ivy and Raven have me laughing every paragraph, the jokes and side remarks are never ending. This duo hit it out of the ballpark(see what I did there eh eh lol). This is a must read in my book and deserves more stars!

This series is so, so interesting! I wasn't expecting the different main characters-- I will confess it threw me for a bit, but it was so much fun! I cant even pick a favorite fmc or a harem. There are so many fun characters and relationship types.
This is one I'll probably read again in the future. Perhaps I need to try more Ivy Asher books :)

3-3.5 stars....Look I feel like I have to be honest here, I'm totally biased when it comes to these author's works. I'm not sure that I can really be objective when it comes to reviewing because I totally love these ladies. There, I said it, they could probably rewrite the dictionary and I'd enjoy it somehow lol. That all being said of course I enjoyed this... but it wasn't my favorite of their stuff. Would I hang it on my fridge and make sure everyone who came in my house had to see it and listen to me go on an on about it like a proud parent... Yea probably lol, but.. I still feel like there were some things definitely off in comparison to their other stuff.

Its obvious that during quarantine at least one of these author's have been neck deep in some 90's throwback.. I think it was Ivy because she obviously has the obsession with Top Gun as evidenced by her references in some of her other solo works. That being said, I'm pretty sure Raven co-signed the shit out of it and dove right in because she seems ride or die like that. So I love me some 90's and I am totally down with the ride, but I feel like a lot of these references are gonna shoot right over the heads of some of our younger readers, just saying. Might need to mix it up a bit in the next series..

FMC, Delta gets a rude awakening when she desperately starts a new job as security for some rich dudes who need their graveyard watched.. yea all kinds of flags go up but its 80$ an hour with some hazard pay, yada yada, and all that stuff that she wasn't really interested in because its freaking 80$ an hour.. First night on the job quickly turns into a shit show though as Delta is thrust into a supernatural world of which apparently she is a part of. Stage Scene or long, drawn out, freak out with panic attacks, fake feinting and weird flirting. Delta, like most of Raven and Ivy's FMCs, is great because she is OTT awkward which makes her so relatable because not everyone has their shit in order and we love reading all about it lol. The difference here is that Delta has a super stubborn streak that for most of the book kept the plot from really progressing because she put the capital D in DENIAL, as well as totally wussing it up for most of the story. This caused some major setbacks in plot progression, but at the same time it was a little refreshing and a different approach in comparison to the other FMC's. I'm not really "feeling" the connections with the guys yet as everything seems totally superficial at this point but keep in mind we really haven't gotten anywhere except past the freak out.. so I'm thinking this is going to pick up. These author's have never let me down so I have total faith. Delta herself is occasionally all accidental bad A, and all whiney "why me" and also kind of damsel in distress.. Its a weird combo but like I said, still having total faith.

Totally got me on the cliffhanger. Luckily, for me, they have planned the releases of these books to be about 2 weeks (or so, I don't math) from each other so I won't have a long wait to dive back in. Now that book one and the epic freak out is over, I can't wait for some reveals about this world and our characters.

2.5⭐️’s — This book was a whole lot of filler… to the point where my ADD bored brain fast forwarded through certain points.

The inner monologue of the h is repetitive and verging on irritating. There doesn’t seem to be any resolution to anything that came to her either, but that’s because she’s a coward… which is the most annoying kind of h to have as a main character IMO.

Not gonna lie… had to FF even in the end because I knew no one would get to the point in those scenes either. And if this book is any indication, I’ll have to FF through parts of the next book. The ONLY reason I want to read the next book is to figure out what the h is. I couldn’t care less for the sexy times as the H’s are “ok” mostly but the one jerk tilts things to make me no care about any of them.

The premise is awesome. Execution is lackluster.
