Zero Distance: A tale of mystery, violence and science

Rate this book
When a successful businessman is gruesomely murdered in his luxurious mansion, all evidence points towards a swift resolution of the case. Yet, captain Roland Kaplan and deputy Chief Charlotte Tang, from the Singapore police, are not persuaded by the overwhelming scientific evidence and embark on an epic journey to uncover the truth. The two detectives soon cross paths with Val, a conflicted young lawyer, whose personal life is an emotional roller-coaster sprinkled with meaningless sexual encounters and conflicted relationships. The unlikely trio will inexorably have to confront an impossible dilemma, which will test, not only their skills as detectives, but also the limits of their moral boundaries. Seemingly unconnected stories and characters unfold in a near-future society where teleportation has been made possible by the mysteries of quantum physics and where access to new and disruptive technologies remains as restricted to the elite as ever. In this science fiction thriller full of suspense and mystery, the reader will be taken into an investigative journey where the boundaries of science, the moral implications of new technologies and the innately flawed nature of humans will all be tested.

I came about this book from meeting the author through a common friend. He was very humble about it and I bought it out of courtesy, but I have to say that I was greatly surprised about the quality. It's a quintessential sci-fi fiction with noir tints. It has some William Gibson vibes (which I love).
It is skilfully written, the characters are engaging, the science is interesting, the plot is thrilling. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
I definitely want to read whatever is next from Lars Tarrach Ramoneda.
