Oddjobs #5

The Long Bad Friday

Rate this book
The world’s last day has arrived. Hell itself has come to earth. Streets of fire, rivers of blood and the trains aren’t running on time.

But Morag Murray isn’t going down without a fight. And, as the mother to the anti-Christ, she feels a wee bit responsible.

And she’s not the only one who wants to hold off the invasion. Even some of the Venislarn residents on earth might prefer a world with decent wi-fi and proper coffee to the hell promised by their gods.

And maybe — just maybe — with the aid of a possessed voodoo doll, a fish gangster and her colleagues at the Consular Mission to the Venislarn, they can save something of their world, even after all hope has gone…

great characters, too dark / gory for series, ending didn't quite add up

I have absolutely fallen in love with this series and was eagerly awaiting to see if the ending would live up to my expectations. SPOILERS the level of violence, Gore, torture, and trauma is way more than needed and NOT in line w/previous books (after the soul gate soldiers lining up civilians, including women and children in the streets, telling them to turn around, face the wall 'it will be fine', while they shot them in the back; the needlessly gorey description of Ricky's death and how Nina has to watch it) while other books certainly had deaths in them and a couple were bloody, it wasn't torture porn and the tone of the book didn't dwell on them. this book had the dark, but not the dark humor tone of the rest of the series.

Vivian rewrites history so that the Venislarn never come to our world. Total cop out....and how do you explain..... Vivian, Morag and the whole counselor mission wouldn't exist, they wouldn't know each other. So why would they all be standing on the library balcony? The library probably wouldn't have been built, certainly not to such a grand scale. And needless to say Prudence wouldn't have been born! I was very disappointed in Nina's character, after surviving the Apocalypse rather than check on her family, she IMMEDIATELY starts her affair with Rikki back up??

It was hinted at in the previews that some of the Venislarn liked living on Earth and maybe they didn't want to leave. I was hoping for some type of compromise where they still lived on our planet but the threat of the soul gate was over so now it had to be business as usual. That would have been much more in line with the series. I was saved from being completely disappointed... Because Steeeeeeve!!!

Ok, I'm over my fit of petulance at the incredibly terrible, copout, ending. I can review it now.

Starts strong, wobbles about during the middle then starts to get strong again towards the end. Just do yourself a favour if you've really been enjoying this series, as I have been; do not read the last chapter.

Don't Bother

Earlier books in the series are amusing. This is tangled, gory and unpleasant, with a heavily telegraphed and long drawn out ending. I did like Prudence, though, so it gets two stars

The conclusion to Heide Goody's Oddjobs series is still quite amusing but also somewhat darker than the previous books, it is the end of the world after all. The plot might be a bit all over the place at times and Goody lost the thread here and there, but overall it was just a lot of fun to follow all those beloved and quirky characters into one last adventure.

I especially loved the parts with Nina and STEEEEEEVE THE DESTROYER! They are the true heroes of this series, although even Morag is almost useful in this final book. There also were a couple of great new additions, the little antichrist Prudence was quite delightful and Nina's mom had some awesome scenes, too.

One might argue that the ending is a bit of a cop out, but since Oddjobs was always a parody of cosmic horror and not actual cosmic horror, I'd say that it was quite fitting. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the series and a bit sad that it's over.

As a whole, I liked the series very much, but in the end, Ms.Goody didn't stick the landing so the final book is only gonna get 3 stars from me.

Absolutely loved this series. I knew the end of the world would have to come at some point and here it has finally arrived. I don't want to give anything away, so just wanted to say all the great characters are here and some new ones. Found myself even liking some of the bad guys that seem almost like they are good guys. Now that the series is over I feel I need to go back to the beginning and read them all straight through.

Taking place over a single day - the 'Long Bad Friday' - of the title, this, the conclusion to the Oddjobs series - is twice as long as any of the previous volumes. It had to be, as it had to tidy up multiple subplots into a satisfying resolution while dealing with the Venislarn apocalypse. That all those narrative strands - and there were a lot of twisty, time-bending, reality-warping strands to deal with - were kept under control is a testament to the authors.
As usual, this book is solidly grounded in the geography of the City of Birmingham (which, considering it is England's second city, is rather little known.) As I have wandered the city extensively, it was great fun to follow all the heroes' journeys in my head. (I cannot look at the Library, the Cube or the canals, in the same way again.) I am not completely convinced by the ending, which I'll provide no spoilers for, but am at a loss to see how else it could have ended.
Finally, another appeal: why aren't Steve the Destroyer dolls on sale yet?

This is a dark book with an obvious ending.
The journey is enjoyable though a bit gory and quite disturbing in places. Without Steve the Destroyer, Mrs Seth and Chad it would be very gloomy indeed.
The best line in the book comes from Chad - 'We are engaging in a multi-lateral, cross-deity set of negotiations with a focus on aligning best practice with the current reality framework.'

Given the complexity of the action and the necessarily twisted reality, the book keeps the reader involved and the action flows at a good pace without confusion. The use of significant numbers of Venislarn god names and speech throughout the book is a bit jarring when reading but the brain soon learns to skip on instead of attempting to read these bits.

All in all, an enjoyable read that finishes(?) the oddjob series.

So, it all ends with a big bang. I've enjoyed the series but the first couple of books where the agency is working to keep the weirdness in Birmingham somewhat under wraps until the apocalypse were far funnier and more entertaining than the books detailing the actual apocalypse. A bit of a surprising decision by the authors, as they could have strung this series out with the former and just kept taking my money for years to come.

Series definetly lost momentum.

First book was great and is definetly best in series, like a portal opened into crazy unknown.
The rest is OK, but threats were named, method in maddnes became evident and familiar. Laws and rules became apparent.
Still the reading is good, and they were able to finish story without dragging it forever into sidequests and filler arcs.

Well I made it all of 31% of the way through this before I just couldn’t care anymore. So then I read the last chapter and now I’m wishing I’d never read more than the first book. This series really lost me two books back and I’m not sure why I thought continuing on was a good idea. It just wasn’t for me.

Urban Fantasy, first published 2021

Yoth-Kreylah ap Shallas – the living black and white – bent over the latest pages of the Bloody Big Book and wrote. “Life is strange, isn’t it?” said Morag Murray. “Compared to what?” asked Vivian Grey. From the edge of the canal towpath a family of five ducks watched the two women. Ahead of them was the Cube building and the Court of Yo-Morgantus, temporal ruler of Birmingham. In the Cube, in twelve minutes time, Morag would meet the man with whom she would conceive the kaatbari and bring about the end of the world.

She looked at the pictures of the people in the stained glass windows. Most of them were wearing brightly coloured robes. Most of them were men. Most of them had serious looks on their faces. Very few seemed to be having a good time.

Darin enttäuschte "The Long Bad Friday" mich jedoch.

Satisfying ending to an under-the-radar series.

The antichrist (Morag's daughter, Prudence) has been born and the end of the world has begun. The book stays true to the idea that this will be terrible indeed. The Venislarn horror is as bad as we were told.

But through all of that, Morag, Rod, Vivian, and Nina do their best to prevent the absolute worst. They are joined by Prudence who despite being a newborn is growing at a remarkable rate, Professor Omar who has taken a mortal wound but doesn't let that stop him, Pupfish the half Venislarn fishboy, Chad from marketing, Yang the Mammonite child, Mr. and Mrs. Seth, a bunch of Donkeys, and Steve the Destroyer.

It's chaos. But despite the horror, death, and destruction described in detail, it's still funny.

"It should be a bold name," he said, thinking it through. "It should strike fear in the hearts of my enemies. It should be a name suited to a battle charger, one on which Steve the Destroyer might ride into the final conflict which is to come."
"Mrs. Squiggly," said Prudence.
"Pah! Idiotic suggestion!" spat Steve.
"She is very squiggly, though."

Each one of these books has a stand-out character. Mrs. Seth stole this book, in my opinion. Here is a character who imposes her will on others, who sees the apocalypse and makes sure everyone has tea and cake, and who doesn't let the City Counsellor off on an error made during trash collection. She doesn't have a large roll, but she was great.

The stand-out character for the entire series is probably Steve the Destroyer, though. Fleshing! Gobbet!

I enjoyed this series the more I read. Although it was clear - or at least it became clear near the end - that Iain and Heide had set up the ending to the series very early in the first book, and I had no problems with the how and why, I am struggling to understand what exactly happened. It's clear that Vivian realized very early on that the big book had to be written and had to contain everything that ever happened in it in order for the "map to become the land", or something like that, and that since it had to exist, she had to write it, and in order to have the time to write it she would need to be in Venislarn hell, where time doesn't exist, so that she could change reality at the end by writing it in the big book. So, what did she write? Why did the Venislarn cease to ever have existed in their reality, but they all continued to know each other? And who was Prudence's father? And why was she still "11" years old? Is she still aging so quickly? It's possible that Heide and Iain don't tell us what Vivian wrote because they don't know either. But I'm willing to accept that Vivian wrote something so clever that the Venislarn didn't exist but everything up until Friday somehow kind of stayed the same. Otherwise, what are their jobs? Does Rob work as a librarian? Maybe I just need to accept that Vivian knew how to word it, but it would have been nice to know that the book thought of all of this too.
That being said, I still really enjoyed the series, the writing, and the characters. It was a fun ride. It reminded me ever so slightly of Iain's The Gears of Madness.

Picking up straight after Odd Jobs #4 - the end of the world is here!

The last book in Heide Goody's series is a lot darker than the others - to be fair, it it the end of days though! Despite being darker it is still just as much fun as the other books in the series. It has humor, action, adventure, time bending antics, blood and guts a plenty. There are lots of threads of narrative to follow and at times it can get a little, not confusing, but maybe a little messy. As the story unfolded I kept wondering how it would end and I hoped and prayed that it wouldn't have a "Dallas" ending where it was all just a dream. It didn't - much anyway (I won't spoil it)- but the last third of the book didn't feel as strong as the opening two thirds. Some of the character development that brought us here seemed to go out of the window, but again, it's the end of days so maybe that's expected. My favorite character in the whole series was Steve the Destroyer - I'd action read a book just about his antics.

All in all a better read than #4, but not the best book in the series, however still a bloody fun read that I enjoyed!

It’s the end of the world and KFC is all anyone wants.

Good book to finish the series, like the other books there’s clearly a need for an editor to help make the book flow better together. I’d also note that there were some chapters which were merely the same about members of the team being split up and having to deal with various horrors from Hell. I skipped some of these as I really only wanted to follow the real plot. Also, I totally get the trope used at the very end of the novel and a bit more love and caring for some of the characters would have been nice.

Think of this as a Maccy D’s meal - it fills you up but ultimately is cheap and not really filling.

I loved all 5 books!!!

I have read all 5 books in the series and did so one after the other and in a fairly short amount of time. I love love love these books. If you like the Harry Potter series, or the Game of Thrones series, or the men in Black movies, or if you just like bits and pieces of all those things Odd Jobs has all that and more. Magic, myth, religion, "alien beings", fantasy, goth, gore, history, and great characters with wit, comedy and depth. I really hope this series is being adapted to screen soon! I'm so sad to be done reading!

Another superbly written instalment on a galaxy not so far, far away

All of the main characters are back with excellent, if slightly surreal, twists and adventures. Nothing too surprising given the authors involved.
There is a lot of imagination that has been put into creating the scene of this particular Friday.
As with the other Oddjob books, this is excellent although it felt a lot longer - which is not a criticism, and there was a lot to tell.

Is book 6 coming..

Amazing conclusion!

If you are a smart arse, into crazy SiFi or fantasy or history, I cannot recommend these books enough. You will also need a slightly twisted, dark sense of humour and a hatred of riddles!
Amazing I am just sad now I think I’ve read all your books! Back to the beginning then.

Brilliant!

Really really enjoyed thes books. It's been a long time since I've become so emmersed in a story like this. I went from loving one character to the other then back again then back again! The detail was amazing, loved Pupfish but what happened to him? My only complaint. Read them all, you won't be disappointed x I'm just sorry I'm finished x

An excellent conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable series.

I've read every book the authors have written and published on Amazon Kindle. If you enjoyed the Odd-jobs books, add the Clovenhoof and Disenchanted books to your reading list, you won't be disappointed.

Explosive

An explosive and glorious end to the series. A multi faceted swirl of colours and forms. All our old friends and enemies and a mahooosive amount of spiky, slimy, squelchy, staby monstrousities. Fast paced and wonderful.

A Wonderfully Offbeat Tale About The End Of The World

Prepare to set aside any considerations you may have about how the world will end and who might bring that sorry state about. Just keep reading and enjoy the enchanted madness that these authors have brought into existence.

Not as good as the previous installments as the plot was rather superficial, but the ways the plots of earlier books came together and the levity worked very well. 3.5 stars and a good end to a very funny series.

I liked this book the best in the series I think. I love all the characters, i love the chaos and all the various things that seem completely unrelated. This book was very brutal with the deaths and violence which I don't mind. I just love these authors and the way they write books.

Quite a lot going on which makes continuity difficult. I just decided to listen to it as a collection of vignettes that occasionally, tangentially meet and then I think "Oh yeah, that was such and such or so and so." Still, sorry this is that last book in the series.
