Two rebellious souls… An innocent deception… One scorching catastrophe…
Fenella Franklin is too tall, too intelligent, and has no title. Her talents lie in numbers and a keen business mind, not in the art of flirtation. When she becomes the object of a cruel wager during her come-out in London, she vows to put off the penniless noblemen vying for her sizeable dowry. But her season is cut short after her mother discovers the subterfuge, and Fenella retreats to Scotland.
Lachlan MacNaughton has neither the temperament nor the patience to be the next MacNaughton chief, preferring to knock heads together rather than placate bickering clansmen. He readily accepts a reprieve to help with the family’s textile mill in Glasgow. A sizzling chance encounter in the rain introduces him to the new female bookkeeper. His grandfather may want him back in the Highlands, but his heart has been lost in the Lowlands.
The attraction between Fenella and Lachlan sparks a passion not even two rebellious souls can deny.
But an innocent deception tests their newfound love and threatens the freedom they both crave.
A MacNaughton Castle Romance Book 1 – Deception and Desire Book 2 - An Allusive Love Book 3 - A Bonny Pretender
USA Today Bestselling author Aubrey Wynne resides in the Midwest with her husband, dogs, horses, mule, and barn cats. Obsessions include wine, history, travel, trail riding, and all things Christmas. Her Chicago Christmas and Regency series have received multiple awards and nominated numerous times as a Rone finalist by InD’tale Magazine.
Aubrey’s first love is medieval romance but after dipping her toe in the Regency period in 2018 with the Wicked Earls’ Club, she was smitten. This inspired her spin-off series Once Upon a Widow. In 2020, she launched the Scottish Regency series A MacNaughton Castle Romance with Dragonblade Novels. Her Regency detective series, Paddy’s Peelers, will launch early 2024.
Historical romance novels are often hit or miss, but only rarely have I encountered such a BIG miss as this one. There was honestly nothing that appealed to me about this book. The only reason it gets two stars in stead of one is because, bad as it was, it didn't offend me.
👎 WHAT I DISLIKED 👎
Plot: It's hard to criticize something that's not there but I'll give it my best shot. I found no plot in this book whatsoever. There was no hook, nothing that set it apart from any other Historical Romance novel, nothing that was unique or exciting. It was like one long yawn.
Chemistry: Our two heroes, Fenella and Lachlan, have all the romantic or sexual chemistry of two wet rags lying next to each other on a kitchen counter. I just could not see it or feel it. There were hardy any romantic banter or interactions and suddenly they were in love.
Characters: Neither Fenella nor Lachlan (or any of the smaller characters) stood out to me in any particular way. They felt flat, stiff and lifeless - sort of like cardboard figures. Ask me tomorrow and I wont remember a single one of them.
Ending: Perhaps the ending really just bothered me because once I got to it I was completely over this book. But honestly, it felt contrived and downright laughable - like the sort of ending the author imagined a Historical Romance ought to have even though it didn't fit the mold of this book.
ARC provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Passion from the beginning with these two, great to read and definitely holds the attention.
I very much enjoyed this book , I found it great reading and it had good characters who had chemistry from the outset. Romantic and sweet first meeting in the rain , where he can’t help but Kiss her immediately set the story for and intense relationship.
I would read more from this author, and look forward to more of this series.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

My review :
Will a little deceit be the end of a grand love ...
I discovered Mrs Aubrey Wynne work with her Wicked Earl Club Series participation. Why I was curious to see her own vision of the regency Scotland. Fenella is no conventional beauty, too tall, too trusting, too clever. After having been tricked during her first season, she feels she is not at her place among the London’s society. As a respite, she is happy to visit her grandmother in Glasgow for the summer. To fill her time, she finds an accountant job, and engage in a kind of courtship with one of the managers. Still by withholding some informations about herself, things she deemed as nothing at first, she might jeopardize her relationship. Lachlan feels he is not made to be the laird, he so much prefers to deal with vendors or negotiators, he has the trade gene, not the patience to deal with feud, neighbors discords and so on. To breathe a bit, he takes refuge at his family’s business, with the hope to change his grandfather’s mind about who is more fit to be laird between him and his siblings. When he meets Fenella, he instantly recognizes her for the Golden Angel sent to change his way. He is quickly smitten and knows she is the one woman for him. Their romance is a sweet one, while their chemistry is engaged from the moment they meet, nothing is rushed, they get to know one another slowly, like a slow burn romance with scorching hot edges. Mrs Wynne with talent details their day-to-day life, their courting and how both fall for the other. Why what appeared as the little deception at the beginning is seen as much more months later. I understand both sides, she let slip a miscomprehension and never corrected it, then she forgot to add an important detail about her family. So one plus two is a recipe for disaster when the other party has hidden nothing from the beginning. And Lachlan’s wounded pride does the rest as he is fragile, also recovering from a dramatic event. 4.5 stars
On a special note, this is the second book in a short span of time I have read about the Peterloo massacre. It seems a major event for the time with its sad consequences.
I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
What a delightful tale! It has been so much fun reading the MacNaughton series of stories. Getting to know this family is such a treat. Fenella and Lachlan are a dynamic pair. A must-read for historical romance lovers.
4.5 Stars Fenella Franklin is too tall, too intelligent, and has no title. Her talents lie in numbers and a keen business mind, not in the art of flirtation. He readily accepts a reprieve to help with the family’s textile mill in Glasgow. A sizzling chance encounter in the rain introduces him to the new female bookkeeper. The attraction between Fenella and Lachlan sparks a passion not even two rebellious souls can deny. This is the first book in the series & what a promising starter. I loved both Lachlan & Fenella their attraction was immediate & the more time they spent together the deeper their feelings became until disaster struck & a misunderstanding & omission totally threw their HEA into jeopardy. A well paced well written book that I read in two sittings, it took me on a plethora of emotions from laughing out loud to tears streaming down my face. An engrossing read & I look forward to the rest of the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Enduring her ambitious mother's plans for her, Fenella has had to suffer insults and snide comments from members of the ton. She thinks her luck has turned when she attracts the attention of a charming viscount, only to discover that he is even more despicable than the rest. When her caring and protective father realises that she needs a respite, he takes Fenella to her much loved grandmother in Scotland for the rest of the season. Used to being busy, if not with attending events of the season, then assisting her father in his office, Fenella finds she has too much time on her hands and with her grandmother's approval, applies for the position of bookkeeper at the MacNaughton textile mill. Life changes dramatically for Fenella, especially when she meets the mischievous Lachlan MacNaughton. This romance is well written but also brings into focus the events of the era that led to the changes that brought about better working conditions for lower ranks in society. I loved the main characters in this book and whilst Lachlan may well have been the hero of the story, Fenella's father comes in a close second. Misunderstandings occur but ultimately the novel comes to a happy and successful close. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
What a way to start a new series! Deception and Desire by Aubrey Wynne is book one in A MacNaughton Castle series and if this is how it begins, I can’t wait for book 2. I found this to be easy to read and Aubrey can really write amazing descriptions. Her characters are lovable and who does’t love a brawny Scot?!. This original story is a true gem and there were some unpredictable happenings that I just didn’t expect… oh how I like that in a book. This story has an embarrassing and horrible scheme, feeling that you don’t belong, a job that is loved, bumping into a handsome stranger, death, grief, secrets, a pushy mother who wants to move up in society, denying your roots, a stubborn grandfather, a loving & supporting grandmother, kindness, joy and yes love. I highly recommend this book…it was truly a wonderful read.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Deception And Desire is a magnificent historical romance by Aubrey Wynne. Ms. Wynne has once again provided readers with a well-written book and a spectacular cast of characters. Fenella had two strikes against her, she was tall and she was smart. After being made the victim of a wager she's determined to avoid marriage and let her sister find a husband. Her father takes her grandmother in Scotland so she can avoid her mother's harping. Lachlan's grandfather is the chief of their clan and wants him to take his place when the time comes. Lachlan and Fenella's story is packed with humor, drama, action, sizzle and suspense. I loved every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Aubry Wynne. Deception And Desire is book 1 of the MacNaughton Castle Romance Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Miss Fenella Franklin doesn't fit the current fashion. She's intelligent, blonde and taller than most men. Her father is only a baronet who made his fortune in trade. Her mother is pushing her into society and wants her to marry a man with a title. After being humiliated once too often she begs her father to let her go and stay in Scotland with her grandmother.
Lachlan MacNaughton is not happy as his Grandfather's second in the Clan. He would be much happier in the family's Glasgow Mill.
This is a fun historical romance with lovely characters and complicated family conflicts. You will easily get caught up in their lives.
This is the first book of the series. I will definitely read the rest.
I found this book to be a simple read. I think the writer did a good with the characters personalities. They brought some humor and entertainment to the story. The romance was hot and tempting between Fenella and Lachlan. I looked for some excitement from the plot of the story. For my reading the plot reads with non excitement. There was no aha! No whoa didn’t see that coming. No deep interactions among the characters to pull the drama out and tell me a story. It was hard to visualize the story from where the writer was trying to lead me.
Late Regency Historical ADULT Romance 💕taking place in Scotland🏰.
Having no luck with London Gentleman of the ton because of her height and bookish ways, Finella, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, decides to go to Glasgow, Scotland to visit her Scottish grandmother. While there, she plans on secretly getting a job in a textile factory as a bookkeeper, a task she excells at because she has a genius head for numbers and has helped her father for years.
Finella💃💋 wants to be able to support herself because she doesn't see herself ever getting married.👰
The first day she meets the MacNaughton brothers, at their textile factory . Lachlan 🐺🍆⛲and Colin are two two huge Scotsmen. Lachlan kisses her in the rain and she is lost in her first 💋kiss!
This is a superior ADULT historical romance💕. Having read a few thousand of them, I can tell right away when the quality of the author's writing is cohesive, immersive ,and mesmerizing. In short, this is a really interesting and well written page turner! Enjoy!
Deception and Desire by Aubrey Wynne is set in the Scottish Highlands and Glasgow. It is a story of two rebellious souls, an innocent deception, and a scorching catastrophe that grips the reader from the start. Fennela is tall, intelligent, and unaware that she possesses beauty. She struggles with her coming out season in London as her position seeking mother pushes for her to find a titled man. Lachlan, a principled man of honor wishes he could pass on his destiny to become chief and manage the clans in the highlands of Scotland. It is a wish his grandfather is not eager to grant! He loves the highlands and the thought of leaving makes his heart ache. However, he knows he doesn’t have the temperament to be an arbitrator and settle disputes and that he must find a path for his life and talents, even if it means working in the family’s Glasgow textile business.
Fate intervenes and both Fennela and Lachlan find themselves in Glasgow. Fennella’s heart and ego were severely wounded when during that first season in London she was the not only an embarrassment to her ambitious mother, but also on the receiving end of a mean prank played by the cruel and entitled Viscount Shelton. She is sent to her grandmother’s in Glasgow in because of her responding shenanigans that were an attempt to ward of other suiters after that planned humiliation. Lachlan came to the same area in an attempt to find a match for his life skills and perhaps to buy himself some time hoping his grandfather would see that his brother was a much better match to become chief of the clans in the highlands.
The characters come to life and one feels their joy and pain as life unfolds and they find their purpose and direction amidst the backdrop of family rules and needs, finances, and politics of the early 1800’s in Scotland.
This work by Aubrey Wynne will compel you to keep reading with your emotions vacillating between humor, indignation, sadness, and even anger. I loved the book and look forward to more work from this talented author!
Miss Fenella Franklin doesn't fit the current fashion. She's very smart, blonde and taller than most men. Her mother wants to move up in society and pushes Fenella into society and wants her to marry a man with a title. Her father made his fortune in trade and has no title. Fennella was tired of being humiliated and begs her father to let her live in Scotland with her grand mother. Then you have Lachlan MacNaughton who seems happier in the family's Glasgow Mill. He told his father that his brother Ian needs to see his wife and decides to go to the Glasgow Mill and run it for a bit so Ian could go home for a bit. Fenella is getting bored and sees an ad for an Accountant and sends a letter applying for the job and signs it as F. Franklin. While Fenella is walking in the rain runs into a gentleman [Lachlan] and he keeps her from falling. Both Ian and Colin are impressed with her skill for figures. Fenella gets hired because she has a skill with numbers not too many people have. Lachlan was surprised that his brother hired a woman. Lachlan and Fenella have feelings for each other but, Fenella has no experience in with flirting. Lachlan and his brother get invited to Fenella's grand mother for Sunday supper then one day Lachlan asks Fenella's grand mother permission to court Fenella. Fenella's grand mother tells Fenella that she neds to tell Lachlan the truth about her father being alive and about her mother not liking Scot's. During the interview an assumption was made that her father was dead. Then tragedy strikes and Ian is killed. Fenella does tell Lachlan about her father being alive and about how her mother feels about Scot's. Lachlan gets very angry and walks out. Want to know what happens?? Do Fenella and Lachland get back together?? Well you need to read this book to find out. I truly loved this book!! I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publisher, for an unbiased opinion. #DeceptionandDesire #NetGalley
Fenella Franklin is taller than most young ladies of the Ton and subject to their ridicule, and even a cruel wager. When she takes matters into her own hands, her social-climbing mother explodes in anger. Fenella escapes to Scotland to stay with her grandmother. When she sees an advertisement in the newspaper for an accountant, she applies in person. She’s always had a talent for numbers and after a bit of persuasion, she lands the job at the mill. From the moment she sets eyes on handsome Lachlan, one of the men who manage the mill, fire sizzles in her veins. She’s unsure why he lavishes his attention on her but for the first time in her life, she feels beautiful and feminine. When a small omission turns into a huge blow-up, Fenella’s heart shatters. Can she beg for Lachlan’s forgiveness or has she lost her only chance at true love?
Deception and Desire is the latest release by Aubrey Wynne and there are so many great elements in it including a sweeping romance between an intelligent English heroine and a brash Scottish man, historically accurate events serving as a catalyst to the plot, a social-climbing mother, a kind-hearted father, humorous dialogue and so much more. The characters leap from the pages and come alive. I connected with shy Fenella right away and my heart leaped in my throat several times. Mrs. Douglas is a wonderfully portrayed Scottish grandmother. The MacNaughton men are larger than life and their voices swirled around me as they talked. From beginning to end, Deception and Desire is a heart-wrenching read about striking out on your own and not giving in to familial expectations. If you’re a fan of Scottish Regency, this is a must-read. I can’t recommend this book enough!
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the publisher via Netgalley in the hopes I'd review it.
A compelling start to a new series that wraps you up in it's vivid description, warmth & humour!!
A wonderfully slow burning romance that sparks at first sight and proceeds to wrap you up in its warm embrace! Deception and Desire is a cleverly written tale. Wynne interweaves wit, sensual craving, teasing flirtation and a soothing warmth that takes the inclusion of cruel ridicule, tear inducing heartache and momentous loss to make you realise just how attached you have become to the couple and the captivating Scottish clanfolk that surround them. Rebels in their own way, Fenella, due to her height, intelligence and keen mathematical mind and Lachlan with his lack of patience to deal with quibbling Clansmen without resorting to fist-persuasion, are struggling to walk the path most desired for them. As a result they both pursue a clandestine mission to reshape and mould their futures with satisfyingly if hard won results which only gets more thrilling with one delightfully spontaneous kiss in the rain. The pair have depth, a sweet connection and niggling insecurities that make them relatable and empathic in their ability to woo a way into your affections. The subcharacters are engagingly colourful too - adding comfort, charm, wit and teasing banter without stealing the limelight - only enhancing the warmth, heart and cheerfulness that projects from the page. Consequently, I am really looking forward to the next book as the MacNaughtons are just so easy to like and even easier to fall in love with!!
On an aside note, I might just have to read Gideon and Lissie's story again, to bridge the gap, as it simultaneously runs alongside this tale and is mentioned within, rekindling my desire to once again be reacquainted. I to implore you to read Rhapsody and Rebellion (about Lachlan's brother, Ian's wife, Lissie, as it is just as engrossing if not more so - although not neccessary to enjoy this book to it's fullest!!!)
From the beginning, this book didn't suit me at all. Like one reader on Goodreads said, there is no plot. None. At least I haven't found it.
The book starts with Fenella in her season. Balls, gowns, gossip. She hates it all especially after one scandalous bet that left her humiliated.
When she arrived in Scotland, she decided to work. She's good with numbers so she quickly becomes a secretary at the hero's family mill. Now, this is where it gets interesting.
First, when the MCs meet it is on the sidewalk, it's raining, one says hey, the other sort of grunts and the hero just kisses her. Because he found a drop on the corner of her lips fascinating. Just like that. After a brief kiss they each go their way.
In other historical romances I've read the meet-cute is always described in details for basically one whole chapter (okay not really, but you get my point). In this, it's a couple of sentences and then it's over. I was like WTF?
What is a great swoon worthy moment in a movie, looked ridiculous here.
Second, when she's in her interview she expressed herself and family as if his dad has passed away. He didn't. The brothers misunderstood and she didn't correct them. She tried and they cut her off but if you ask me she could correct them anytime later. This is not something you just forget to mention.
Third: As far as I understood, the hero is the eldest son and therefore should become the clan's leader. Instead, he wants to become something else and let his brother do his job. Umm, I found this unbelievable?? In other books, this is kind of a must so this thing that he can do what he wants is just not right.
Anyway, I came to almost half of the book. The book talks about chemistry between the characters but if the author put so much time in describing the interior of the mill and leaves only a couple of sentences for the meet-cute you don't really feel anything for the MCs. For me, the feelings were just words but I didn't see any passion between them.
2 stars.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Set in Glasgow during the Regency Era, Deception and Desire sees our heroes, Fenella and Lachlan meet at the MacNaughton's textile mill, and fall in love. Fenella has never fit in in London society. She's too tall, too clever, and not blue-blooded enough. Her father might have a title, granted by the Regent, no less, but to the haute society, she's an outsider. With her mother pushing her at penniless, titled men whenever she can, she wants out, and visiting her grandmother in Glasgow was the perfect choice. However, she's bored, and when the advert for an accountant at the local mill is posted, she goes for the job, and gets it. The only problem is, she needs to hide her status, and forget about the fact that one of the owners kissed her outside before the interview. Lachlan knows his grandfather wants him to inherit as clan chief when the time comes, and stay in the highlands, but he wants to be busy in Glasgow, to let younger brother Ian spend time with his wife. Meeting Fenella was perfect, and he can't stay away, but won't do anything to jeopardise her job because the whole factory needs her.
This was a quick enough read, but all in all, I was a little disappointed. There's not much by way of a plot, except the discovery of theft by the previous accountant, and the inclusion of a mention of the Peterloo massacre. The romance is good enough, and I felt like Fenella and Lachlan were suited to each other, but I still just wanted something a little more from it all.
Deception and Desire by Aubrey Wynne is a terrific, if a bit different, love story featuring Fenella Franklin, who is beautiful but unique: too tall for the ton; too intelligent, by far; and in love with numbers, no man. Lachlan MacNaughton is the hair to a lairdship in Scotland; a lairdship he has no desire to inherit. They meet in Glasgow, Scotland, where Fenella has fled to stay with her grandmother for a while and get away from the marriage mart in London. Lachlan has fled his home with the clan to help with the textile factory his clan owns and runs. He runs into her, literally, as she is leaving the factory, having just been hired to be the bookkeeper, and he is reporting to work. They are both astounded when they discover each other's identities.
It is always exciting when a woman, not matter what historical period, who doesn't meet society's norms finds love with a man who can accept her for who she is. Not only does Lachlan accept her, but so does his family. Fenella is smart and fiery and Lachlan appreciates that in her. A potential problem arises when Fenella realizes she must tell her mother about her love. Her mother is/was Scottish and hates all things Scottish. This turned out to be a bit anti-climactic, which was a disappointment in an otherwise terrific book. It had the potential to be highly entertaining. I recommend it.
I received a free ARC of Deception and Desire from Dragonblade, through Netgalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions and interpretations are solely my own. #netgalley #deceptionanddesire
Lachlan MacNaughton doesn't want to be clan chief as his grandfather wishes. When he is sent to oversee their mill business, he finally finds something he's good at. What throws him off is the hiring of a bookkeeper, but not just any bookkeeper. Fenella Franklin is a tall willowy blonde who is a whiz at numbers and doesn't realize she's a catch. After her disastrous first Season, Fenella wants nothing to do with English Society, but her mother wants her to marry a gentleman with a title. Problem is, Fenella is not the model most gentlemen want. When she meets Lachlan, she finally feels beautiful.
I enjoyed this book and thought the opening chapter was compelling. Poor Fenella. I felt so bad for her, but her father's revenge against the deceitful gentleman who played that terrible prank was at least a small consolation for her. Fenella was relieved when she was sent to Scotland to be with her grandmother for the summer. I loved the McNaughton brothers and their cousin Colin. They all looked out for each other. Ms. Wynne does a good job of highlighting the importance of family. Lachlan resists his feelings for Fenella and when he finally confesses how he feels, he learns about a secret that Fenella kept from him. Can she ever win back his love?
I voluntarily read this book and all opinions are my own.
Fenella Franklin hates being put on display. Everyone stares at her and talks about her. She is taller than most of the men, the women make fun of her and her fAther is a business man with no title. When a man finally pays attention to Fenella she is so flattered and excited that a man has finally taken an interest in her for who she is, until she finds out it was only a bet between the men of the ton. Fenella is devastated and takes time away to visit her grandmother in Scotland where she meets a very handsome Scot! Although Fenella knows nothing can become of it as her mother would ever let her marry a Scotsman!
Lachlan MacNaughton is destined to become the next clan Chief and hates the thought of it. Preferring to work for the family business instead. Lachlan has been trying to convince his grandfather that his brother would be the better Chief. And then a beautiful woman falls into his life. As Fenella and Lachlan become close there are lots of obstacles in there way, not to mention that Fenella has some secrets she has omitted.
I really enjoyed reading this story! This was my first book by this author and I can say it won’t be my last! Loved the characters and the story, definitely recommend this one!
This is only my 2nd story by this author and I will be reading more of her work.
The character's were written with depth and you got a feel for them. Even though they are not together until about 25% into the story, I felt a connection when they do meet. There is romance which builds slowly and felt right. Anymore seems more of these type of stories either have no romance or instant. I enjoyed the slow walk to HEA for these two.
Not all is fun and games. There is sadness that was handled well along with a lack of honesty that was innocently held back. I felt how each reacted was true and made them more endearing to me. Also, how I loved the h's grandma in this story.
There is passionate loving without the act outside of marriage and once described within marriage. Heat level 4 out of 5 if that.
We are treated to the Highlands and England and I liked how the two finally came together. The h is smart and tall and feels like no-one sees the real her except for a few. A joke is played on her and oh how I loved the revenge her dad got on the man - made me laugh out loud.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and some spice. I recommend this story and author. (ljb)
Fenella is an intelligent woman in a time where she is considered a bluestocking for being more knowledgeable than a man. She is tall, which is problematic when the men are shorter than her. She was deeply hurt and escapes to Scotland to be away from London society and her mother, who is pushing her to marry a man with a title. Lachlan would rather fight than compromise, but will do his duty if he is the next chief, which is what his grandfather wants. When Fenella runs into Lachlan, she is stunned by him and he by her, for he impulsively kisses her, much to her shock. As Fenella works in the mill, she has omitted a few things about her life in London to Lachlan, who is falling more in love with her. Fenella is afraid of his reaction and keeps delaying the truth to him. Lachlan's reaction to the truth will have an impact on their relationship, even though both have fallen deeply in love with each other. I received this novel from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Fenella Franklin decides to leave London, after she finds herself part of a cruel wager during her Season. She decides to turn her back on the ton and make her way to Scotland, where her maternal grandmother lives. The very apt title ‘Deception and Desire’ rings true when Fenella pursues work as a bookkeeper at the MacNaughton textile mill. Fenella literally falls into arms of Lachlan MacNaughton on the way to her interview and finds herself sharing a kiss with him. Yet when as they spend more time together, omissions about her life in London are beginning to seem like deceptions. Fenella and Lachlan are two equally strong-minded characters, yet from when they first meet, it is apparent that there is an attraction. Theirs is a romance filled with laughter and complications. What made this an interesting read, was all of the many family members involved. It will be difficult not to find yourself immersed in all of their issues. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I am currently obsessed with regency romances that are about not noble people. I love seeing a romance in a different setting.
This book was great. I loved Fenella. She’s considered too tall and too educated to be a good wife in England. I loved how the author showed awkward she felt (I’ve been there girl!) But she’s not ashamed of it. Her mother is pushing her into marriage with a noble, but Fenella wants nothing to do with that. She gets permission to live for a time with her grandmother in Glasgow.
She becomes employed at a textile mill run by the MacNaughtons. Her first meeting with Lachlan is so freaking romantic ❤️. The two have chemistry, but this is a definite slow burn. Fenella is keeping secrets and Lachlan has a few of his own.
This was a wonderful book and I will be reading more from this author. We also better find out what happens with Colin and Rose!!!
Fenella is tall intelligent and over looked! Lachlan is a big Scottish man next in line for Chieftan he doesn't want it and it's not his skillset! Fenella has kept the books for her father and has a gift with numbers! A mistake during an interview for the position of accountant in Glasgow will have far reaching consequences! Fenella literally runs into Lachlan and is smitten! He's taller than her handsome and a part owner in the textile company! Things take an interesting then as the two get closer but deceptions have a way of coming out and when they do....Fenella came to Glasgow because she did not fit in with the Ton of Londons society! When Lachlan finds out he's been misled what consequences come from deceiving a braw Scot who also just lost a family member! But true love is hard to come by and even harder to forget!!!
This is the story of the ugly duckling turned to a beautiful swan. Fenella Franklin is tall, awkward and intelligent, the total opposite of the ideal debutante. But Fenella's mother is determined that her daughter marry a titled gentleman. When Fenella is found to be the butt of a cruel joke she feels she can take no more and convinces her father to let her go visit her grandmother. While in Glasgow Fenella gets a job to pass the time. There she meets Lachlin, a braw Scot. Although Lachlin kisses her when she bumps into him, it is not love at first sight. There are many ups and downs ahead for Fenella and Lachlin. This book will make you laugh, cry, get frustrated and cheer. This is definitely a book you do not want to start at night. You really can't put it down!
Fennel Franklin became a laughingstock during her debut season in London. She has retreated into her home and rarely goes about in society. She’s convinced her father to let her visit her grandmother in Scotland. Once in Scotland she becomes a bookkeeper where she meets Lachlan MacNaughton. Lachlan is the next in line to be the clan chieftain, but he feels his brothers are better suited to the Laird. Fennel and Lachlan are immediately attracted to each other. For the first time Fennel is confident, she stands tall and look Lachlan in the eye, tells him what she thinks, and she sometimes gets sassy. I loved the captivating story of young woman learning who she is and falling love, but there’s a secret she’s kept from him. Will their new love survive when she confesses her secret, will he fight for her or break her heart? I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
I loved this book. This is my first read by this author and I am a new fan. Fenella Franklin is just the type of woman I can relate to. She will impress you from the start with her fortitude. The MacNaughton's don't what has hit them, in one case literally, when they meet the female applying for a job. Excellent story that will bring tears to your eyes at times. At the same time, Lachlan and Fenella's store is so much fun and the side stories, uncle and brother to Lachlan, bring so much more to the book. I look forward to more from this author.
