A loving wife and mother, Cleo Grayson McCarthy is desperate for solitude to finish her latest novel and decides to spend the summer alone, away from her family, at Cameo Lake in New Hampshire and finds herself drawn to the enigmatic and reclusive composer who lives across the lake. Reprint.
Born in Providence, RI, raised in Middlefield (Rockfall) Connecticut. Post High School Education, Middlesex Community College, Middletown, CT and Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, CT. Married, two grown daughters and a granddaughter and two grandsons - plus four step grands. Lives in Oak Bluffs, MA, on Martha's Vineyard.
Those are the stats. I am a novelist, ten published, one in progress. I frequently contribute to the on-line magazine, Stay Thirsty.
Cleo McCarthy is having a case of writer's block so her best friend Grace insists that the author escape to Grace's cabin in New Hampshire to immerse herself in penning her next novel. Cleo's husband Sean readily agrees to the arrangement (much to her surprise) including caring for their two children aged ten and eight. Everything goes as planned until Sean shows up unexpectedly and drops Lily and Tim off at the cabin effectively putting a halt to the progress Cleo was making on her book. It soon becomes apparent that Cleo and Sean's marriage is in trouble. Sean had an affair several years ago and after hearing about what is going on at home, Cleo suspects he is once again involved with another woman. Something I liked about this story is that Cleo values being loved and accepted by the big McCarthy family so much that it gives her second thoughts about divorcing Sean(in spite of his cheating) and losing the only real family she has ever known. Good read!
A very sweet and emotional story that takes the reader in the life of a normal family to the rough patches to the scoundrel to friendship to heart break. Many women can probably relate to this story, at least from Cleo, the main character's point of view. Not a cry at a page kind of story, but an evolution of emotions and resolutions of character and always in the end... love.
My firs book from this author and I have to tell you that I found some unusual words in her work, one that stayed with me was: Niggardly. I was actually surprised to see this word and although I kind of knew what it meant, I had to look it up to make sure. If you know, kudos! If you don't.... look it up!
I really enjoy Susan Wilson's dog books, and I loved the Hawke's cove duo. This one was a disappointment, by comparison. Don't get me wrong, Ben is great, and the lake is an excellent "character". I even liked Cleo's kids. The rest of the subject matter... not so much. Sean is an ass. So are all of his family members. There was no mention whether or not the new nursing home employee who leaked the news about Talia was fired (and they should have been!).
I' ve had this book for quite some time having purchased it at a library book sale. I typically don't read romance but this one was a nice story. I enjoyed this light and easy read.
To be honest, when I started reading this book, I wasn't too sure I was going to like it. However, once I start a book, I usually don't stop until I reach the end. I'm glad I hung in there on this one. It was one of my favorites of Susan Wilson's books.
This book was a ringside seat into the dynamics of a struggling marriage, and a male-female relationship that started out innocently enough but, over time, grew into something that would stand the test of time. Memorable characters, very real complications that could happen to anyone. As you read, you're torn - not only do you want the marriage to survive but you also want the main character to rediscover the joys of a loving relationship as well. You're rooting for everyone but, as in life, someone wins, someone else loses. Heartwarming ending to a great book.
This is my first time reading anything by this Author. I enjoyed the book. I normally do not like storylines involving adultry but this one had me cheering for long suffering wife who's trust was shattered 8 year before and she suspects it's happening again. A bittersweet story of finding your soulmate, even later in life. Makes you believe that it's never too late for a happily ever after.
Altogether, Cameo Lake by Susan Wilson was an alright book, but this was not my first time reading it. Overall, I have read the book twice and each time I read it I felt like i was reading through sludge; I just felt as if my progress was very slow the entire time. Yes the story is good, but I know I won't be reading it again.
I had a difficult time with how slowly this book got into the meat of the story, but I ended up liking how it all came together. I'm glad I stuck with it.
LOVED this book!!! Just now realized she also wrote one of my favorites: One Good Dog! So I have unintentionally read four books by Susan Wilson and now plan to read the rest she has written.
