Flawed is an epic Science Fiction work that has been described as a meld of Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings and Dune. It is a large scale fantasy, backed by hard science that will take you on an epic journey into fantastical lands inhabited by complex characters that are flawed by the common imperfections of humanity. This is an adult read that does not hold back on the reality of the human condition. This is an adult read that contains scenes of a violent nature and may produce images of a sexual nature in some readers. An epic sci fi that is powerful and gripping. The magical world comes alive in your head. It reminded me of the land of Lord of the rings in it's manifestation through maps. It's an incredible piece of work. I've already started the next one!
This is an epic story with very dynamic characters in an extremely brutal world. This was truly unlike anything I have ever read before, and it was hard to put it down. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, and I plan to check out more books by this very talented author.
Leonardo Khalid is a genetically modified human nearing the end of his natural life. Rather that die completely he, with the assistance of his partner - Sahara, uploads his mind in order to preserve it.
On doing so, the powerful drugs that are administered to him cause him to enter a dream state and he journeys to a land previously unknown. In this world he encounters people and places and interacts with them as though he is really there. Leonardo becomes caught in the clutches of an evil tyrant and has to do battle against they tyrant's foes in hand to hand combat - in an almost gladiator-like manner. Leonardo knows he is dreaming and, despite one or two attempts to change the natural progress of the dream, he goes along with the flow, experiencing many things he never did in real life. This book is brilliantly written and explores the notion that dreams are somewhere we can go to. In Leonardo's case he discovers something terrible. A previously unknown truth that will have earth-shattering repercussions. Bring on the sequel!! Which I have just bought and I am really looking forward to reading. My only complaint with Flawed is that it had too many detailed fight scenes. But this is a personal thing as I'm not a lover of fight scenes. I prefer it when the opponent goes down on the first punch. Having said that, the fight scenes are so well written, so well choreographed, they are easy to read.
Basic Details: Book Title: FLAWED Subtitle: FIRST GENESIS Author: D.H. Rosenberg Genre: Science Fiction/Post-apocalyptic Part of a series? Yes Order in series: 1 Best read after earlier books in series? N/A Available: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
Overall score: I scored this book 5/5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Short Summary of the book: This is the first book in a series. We are following Leonardo, a human engineered to have the perfect geneset. Not created as we are all used to but artificially instead. He has lived for several centuries and heals quickly. But then a fatal flaw in his design is discovered. The only way to preserve his brilliant brain and intellect for future generations is to put him into a dream state and upload all his memories and knowledge to a computer. This book, tells us the contents of his first dream. Will he survive long enough to make the upload successful? What I liked about the book: The story was fast-paced and interesting. Leonardo has many adventures in his dreams and tries to make sense of them. Even during the dream, he is aware of the fact it is a dream and his actual body is still in a hospital bed, dying. What I didn’t like about the book: There were areas in the book where it became confusing and I didn’t know where I was. This was only at the start of the book when it was unclear we were actually in the dream before Leonardo joined this. My favourite bits in the book: The book was an enjoyable read in its entirety. My least favourite bits in the book: I enjoyed the entire book. Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author? This is the second book I’ve read by this author. He knows how to weave an interesting story. What books could this be compared to and why? This book is different from other post-apocalyptic books in that it shows us an insight of the situation before and I suspect we will see Leonardo in books to come trying to stop the events from taking place. Recommendation: In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:
Children No Young Adult Possibly Adult Yes
If you like science fiction or post-apocalyptic stories, this book may be the book for you.
I look forward to reading more books by these authors. This is the first in a trilogy of a single long story. So by the end of this novel there is no end-conclusion, except more intrigue, and you’ll want to read more to get what’s going on? And what is going on? That’s the mystery. A man from the future walks about in his (possibly dying state) dream which is set in a strange medieval world. Weird eh! But I know from reading the author’s other works that there will be a hidden intricate reason for these things. So while reading this, i’m busy trying to work out the dream symbolism. Maybe the map of the land given at the start represents his body, the long dividing wall is his spine? And more weird things happen as the present day situation of the dreamer’s body leaks into the dream narrative. It is a mystery puzzle, though the author does give us guidance along the way. Yet the puzzle is still unsolved at the end forcing the curious reader to read on. To find out what it’s all about. Read on. Something big is coming. I can feel it.
This is a good book which I found to be very well written. I was fully immersed in the world that the author has created.
The story opens with Leonardo. He falls ill unexpectedly and awakes to find himself in a strange world. He assumes this to be part of his recovery. Leonardo meets up with others and together, the small group are in the land of Theoden.
There are a variety of characters as the hierarchy of Leonardo’s dream land is explored.
This is quite gritty in places, such as the subplot featuring The Greatness, Calopius. I didn’t find him to be a particularly nice character.
There were many detailed fight scenes in this book as Leonardo trained to battle for his freedom.
The pace flowed well in this story. I’d be interested in seeing how this develops in the further books in this series.
In Flawed, the author took us to a futuristic world centered around Leonardo, a genetically enhanced human. Upon learning about his fast-moving case of cancer, he agreed to an emergency procedure to upload and preserve his brain. During the upload, he was taken to a dream state to a primeval world where he was confronted by predators, adversaries and his own primeval desires.
This was a highly intelligent book. The writing was engaging. The contrast between the advanced world of Leonardo’s and the primeval dream world was fascinating. The author is a master of dialogues. It was an interesting take on artificial intelligence and immortality. Highly recommended!
What do our dreams mean? Why do we dream at all? These are questions I've asked myself more than once. The thought that a dream is possibly another alternate realm or dimension we are thrust into when we sleep certainly intrigues me. What dreams are is a mystery as old as the first humans. Having said that, this book gives a fresh new take on the idea of travelling into the dream dimension, and it is as mind bending as it is exciting.
Flawed: First Genesis by D.H. Rosenberg is a thrilling and intelligent novel! The characters are extremely life-like and the author does a brilliant job bringing the story to life with vivid descriptions and fast-paced prose.
I could really see this as a movie or TV series!
If you’re a fan of dystopian/fantasy/Sci-fi, you need to read this book!
I haven't read that much sci-fi and this was an amazing introduction for me to it. I was completely engrossed with the characters along the way and the storyline was perfectly put together and flowed from beginning to end. Highly recommend.
Wow! I loved this first book of the series - an absolute epic of a tale. We follow the journey of an artificially modified being approaching the end of his useful life, the antagonist he fights on an intellectual level and allegiances he forges with fellow adventurers. The plot is thick and complex, with the author gently leading the reader through the twists and turns. There are references to climate change, drug dependence and (pre-apocalypse) weapons of mass destruction - as well as sight of the more animal instincts that bubble just below the surface of all civilisations. This read is really quite adult - occasionally titillating in a less than wholesome way! But this is a first book and there are as many questions as answers .... Enjoy!
