Dirt, pain, and grime. That’s life on the streets of East Stanwick. There are two options. Break your back for a fist full of copper. Or take them at knifepoint. For Matlock Sharp, there’s only one chance to escape. Fight through a five-floor maze full of monsters. A life of privilege and class are waiting for him. But he’ll need to overcome more than monsters if he wants to escape the gutter.
Flat characters, sparse world building, sloppy writing. Felt like reading a first draft. All characters sounded the same, and the action scenes were confusing. The only interesting aspect was the magic system and the litrpg elements, but even those seemed uninspired.
Some interactions between characters felt jarring. Banter and harsh words from Clare led to a comment about Lock's father, and Lock suddenly strangles her, choking her breathless? And after that they continue on with their witty banter? It really felt like Clare had absolutely no reason to like Lock, and I didn't either. Clare seemed the more sympathetic character of the two and I'd secretly hoped she would get more backstory, but nope, it was all about Lock who gets overtly protective from comment about his dad, choking the living daylight out of a girl he just met. Yeah, going to pass on this series.
A Good Introduction To A Complex Literary Universe
Matlock's Initiation will be the beginning of his life as a mage. If he succeeds he gains his Blessing, which will grant him access to one of the twelve Aspects of magic which humans can access. Success will take all of his father's training, his determination, and a new friend's help so he approaches the event with cautious confidence and his grandfather's sword in hand.
Solid story, good characters and pacing. So close to 5 stars but just a hair shy. The episode 2 preview was actually a bit off putting. Still a nice effort and worth the time.
