Following on from the last volume, which ended pretty cheerfully.... this one starts with a tense battle scene and ends with a rather worrying cliffhanger. Plots within plots mean that Tempest is now the target of some rather ~unsavoury~ forces, and are going to have a lot to deal with in the next volume, especially with the magical barrier surrounding the city that's preventing outside communication and weakening those present...

Chapter 53. Leaving the labyrinth as friends with Ramiris. Hopefully she’ll turn up again in the future c:

New character called Myuran that bested Youmu in a fight? Is she meant to be a take on Mulan perhaps?

Nope. Mage. Maybe the name’s just similar then. Never would think of Mulan as a mage, so I guess she’s NOT a take on her?

Demon Lord Clayman apparently. What is with seemingly all the demon lords wanting in on Tempest? o.O

Chapter 54. Rimuru’s leaving the children? ;u; Can’t he take them with him to Tempest?

So this nation of Farmas is missing out on steep tariffs as a direct result of the creation of Tempest and is pissed… does that mean there’s going to be a war? 8’D

OH BOY. Mention of that church. So they’re going to try and ERADICATE Tempest then? ._.

Awww… Rimuru really is leaving them. Even if he HAS invited them to visit during the holidays it’s still sad. I can understand why - I assume their arc is over for now - but still!

Oh fuck. Lady from the church (and one of the people Shizu taught, I think?) is here to kill Rimuru and prevent him from going home because they’re also attacking there at present. That’s… not good.

Chapter 55. So the magic barrier is kind of like an area-based limiting thing? To prevent monsters (and others I guess?) from using magic? Good thing Rimuru’s pretty strong… but aside from that it doesn’t seem like he has much that can be used in this situation given that most of his abilities use magic 8’D

How is it that Hinata’s attacks are causing direct damage to the soul? How does that work?

...what’s happened to Rimuru? Why has the seventh hit (that apparently should have killed him?) turned him into a mindless monster thats a sort of mish-mash of all the things he’s absorbed up until now?

So Rimuru both lost and did not lose that battle… but now he has to get back to Tempest, which is ALSO separated by a barrier. Shit.

Introduction of new world travellers, that have apparently been ordered to take out Tempest; Kyoya Tachibana, Kirara Mizutani and Shogo Taguchi.

Chapter 57. Huh? Why is Milim going to attack the Beast Nation? And uhh… why do they have such advance warning? o.O

Oh. Because she announced it. That’d do it I guess.

RUDE. Trying to get everyone to turn on one of the hobgoblins by lying that the guy touched her butt, and then using her ability to make everyone believe it. That is NOT OKAY, regardless of whether it was an order as part of your infiltration of the city to make a commotion and such! Good thing Gobta was around to help out his friend ;u;

Chapter 58. WAIT. Does this mean that Clayman is working with the church to destroy Tempest? Because he just asked Myuran to turn it into anti-magic territory, which would prevent communication with the outside world ._.
And this whole thing about Milim… is he how somehow behind her declaration in the Beast Nation?

Wait… So does this mean that Clayman’s plan is different to what’s happening with the church people? What’s going on here? Clearly Myuran’s doing her thing to save Youmu (or at least… that’s what I gathered from what she said?) so… what’s happening here?

Waging war for church and profit

After saving the lives of his temporary students Rimuru is finally ready to return to Tempest after saying his goodbyes. However even after picking up a brand new skill allowing him to teleport even farther distances he finds himself unable to teleport. Soon he discovers the reason why as he meets Hinata Sakaguchi for the first time and discovers she is an extraordinary threat with magic at her disposal that could harm many monsters and has plans on his little project in monster civilization. With the Holy Church of Falmuth declaring a crusade on the upstart monster society and the demon lord Clayman sending his own brand of trouble to Tempest we are left with a lot of action, some reprehensible people, and danger to those Rimuru has grown close to in a major cliff hanger screaming read the next volume or you will regret it. Let us hope not to many of the good people get hurt as war comes home to the monsters.

Rimuru wraps up his time as a teacher and prepares to head back to Tempest, but meets an unexpected visitor who is none too happy to see him and, in fact, wants to murder his face on principle.

Meanwhile, the greed and overall (bad) sliminess of a neighboring country has set up every excuse to start a holy war against Tempest. They've sent an army, a very interesting vanguard, and even a blackmailed spy (courtesy of a demon lord).

Things are about to go VERY haywire and I need the next volume...

Things took a turn serious turn right after Rimuru left the kids. I still remember the "exam" mini-arc for the children in the anime, which I didn't really like. It was strange they took that as an opportunity to introduce a later character, yet decided to cut off parts about how Rimuru and Myormiles met. Anyway, more characters make their appearance, humans this time, as antagonists. Things aren't looking good for Tempest as they get targeted by a hostile nation and an anti-monster church.

We are introduced to Hinata Sakaguchi and Rimuru's first decisive defeat. It was a bitter pill, coming from the sanctimonious Holy Church. She refuses to even talk to a monster, so negotiation or reasonably discussing the problems between the Church and the nation of monsters was never going to happen. The only solution to their differences if for the monsters to die. I wanted so badly for her to be defeated! Maybe in another volume....

The level of stress I’m feeling is completely of charts. This was so good! There’s an infinite tension, there’s a ton going on and Tempest is in danger. I can’t handle the suspense after that ending - see this is way I like to binge… No self control!

L'étau se resserre autour de la fédération de Tempest. Le Royaume de Falmus voit d'un très mauvais oeil la nation peuplée de monstres, monstres qu'elle a l'habitude de combattre. Sans parler de rois-démons qui tirent les ficelles depuis quelques tomes déjà et sentent la situation leur échapper.
Un bon tome, différent des autres, où chaque page sent le danger pour Limule et ses compagnons. La fin nous laisse dans une grande incertitude quant à l'avenir de tous les personnages que nous connaissons.

CLIFFHANGER! I shan't spoil it, but dang, need vol 13 now!

Seriously, not sure what else to say. I could tell about the plot but don't want to spoil anything. I'll just say that Rimuru and friends have come up against someone/something that seems to present a challenge more than most and I am really curious to see how it is resolved.

Verdict: If you're a fan of the series, you should love this one!
