The Witch Hunter

Rate this book
When Taryn Guthry arrives at the famous Harvard lecture hall to speak about the European witch hunts, she gets far more than she bargained for. Armed with years of experience researching historical sites in England, she takes to the stage confident in her knowledge, ready to deliver the speech of a lifetime.

Unknown to Taryn, something ancient has come to listen, a witch who is getting angrier by the moment. Convinced that Taryn is sympathetic to the witch hunters, she takes matters into her own hands. She curses Taryn back to a time when there are clear lines between God and the Devil, good and evil. Matthew Hopkins is the Witch Hunter General, appointed by God himself to rid the world of those who practice witchcraft. He travels from town to town with his friend and colleague, John Stearne, freeing the innocent from Satan's grasp. Until he happens upon a woman, laying naked on the road. As Matthew and Taryn's worlds collide, a more sinister plot is taking shape.

Can Taryn find a way back to her own time? Or will her heart convince her that her place is by Matthew's side? As their love grows stronger, Matthew must find a way to save her from the horrors of the inquisition or lose her forever.

The Witch Hunter is stand-alone, Dark Paranormal Romance intended for readers 18+. This book deals with subjects that some may find triggering.

5 out of 5 stars. Terrific Read

I highly recommend this book. Here is why:

If you enjoy historical fiction with a dash of magic, look no further. The author weaves such a stunning tale about a young woman plucked from the world of academia and thrust into the type of situations before which she had only dreamed. While not the tone of the book is not a humorous one, it reminded me greatly of the Agnes Nutter storyline in the book/television series Good Omens. Betrayal, intrigue, compassion, violence, and a bit of time travel all play pivotal roles in the journey. The dynamic range of this author's debut novel is highly commendable. If you are looking to lose yourself for a few enjoyable hours, I would highly suggest taking this story for a ride.

This is an amazing debut for Candace Adams! Her characters are nuanced, well-characterized and distinct. The setting is just present enough to make a real impact, without delving into exposition. The story is emotional and heart wrenching... This isn't one you'll want to miss! It's a dark, yet heartfelt romance that kept me on my toes the whole way through.

Romantic history at its finest!

Wow! First read from this author and I have to admit that it took me a few to get into this book. I kept going and I am so glad I did. Taryn and Matthew's story is definitely different. You have Taryn from 2020, Matthew who was the Great Witch Hunter General from the 1600's. Taryn gets sent back in time by a witch, to teach her a lesson as Taryn believed the witch hunters were victims of the beliefs during that time. It turned out to be a wonderful read and I definitely recommend it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Not the normal type of subject I read.
Ms. Adams does an excellent job of story telling. I'm reading you can tell she did a lot of research on the subject.
I recommend this book for general reading by anyone who wants something a little different. Well done Ms. Adams, Semper Fi! Marine.

I haven't read many historical romances but this one took me from present day back into the 1600s. It's a very well written book and seemed to be very historically accurate. I loved the relationship between Matthew and Tayrn. Their love was sweet, lasting, strong and caring. The theme of redemption and forgiveness is very strong and one I really found intriguing. Matthewe finds hope and Tayrn helps him to find it with her love. I was quickly drawn into the story and couldn't put it down wanting to know if Matthew and Tayrn could defy time and find forever together. I really enjoyed this book. It was unique and captivating from start to finish!

A thrilling story about witch hunting like none I've read before!

I absolutely loved this story, I am a huge fan of A Discovery of Witches and highly recommend the book to all other fans! I love the whole concept of Taryn's story, especially the little twists I didn't see coming. The witch trials were a truly horrific period in history and I feel Candace captures this perfectly while putting a gripping slant on it all. Totally unputdownable.

Taryn Guthry spent her life researching everything she could about the Inquisition and witch trials, making it her life's work. She even spent a year traveling to all those places she read about so she can get a feel for, and better understand the times.

Her work led her to Matthew Hopkins, who was known as the Witch Hunter General, and his partner John Stearne. Becoming an expert on the topic, she was Invited to speak at Hawthorne Hall for her very first lecture on the topic.

Compassion and understanding are not words that come to mind when speaking of these two men. Evil, barbaric, and sinister are. However, Taryn believed they were just doing a job they were paid to do and they were victims in their own right to the times. She believed they thought they were doing Gods work by ridding the lands of the devil's influence through these women.

Little did she know that her  sympathetic beliefs towards these men who executed a lot of so called "witches" could potentially put her much closer to the topic then she ever expected to be by romanticizing the Inquisition.

A disgruntled woman who has ties to one of the woman found guilty of witchcraft, and ultimely sentenced to death by Matthew, promises Taryn a meeting that she holds true to.

Normally I am not really a historical fan but Candace did an amazing job staying true to the facts but also writing an original story that had me from the beginning!

It kept me at the edge of my seat with excitement and also scared to turn the page! It's definitely not a light hearted read but by no means does that mean there wasn't a beautiful and sexy 😏love story burning up the pages !

Captivating! Page turning! Exciting! And full of thrills and even a twist! All come to mind when reading The Witch Hunter. I'm glad I took a chance on a historical book and Candace..I look forward to reading more of her work.

Warning - triggers and empaths may have problems reading this book.

Taryn gets sent back in time to learn a lesson about witch hunters of the past by a witch who survived the witch trials and still lived on to this day. Taryn falls in love with the witch hunter and both have different views on the matter of women, trials, and killings. Matthew, John, and Sarah are all people from history brought into a fantastic piece of fiction. I do say, John as he was written was absolutely perfect. I really hated him so much that in a dream last night, the women whom he said were witches got their revenge on him. The fear in his eyes made me smile. I think the author did a terrific job showing views from different people of different time periods and how everything happened. While reading, I had a feeling of who will get what and still wondering about Harold. His reaction at the book made me think he understood about his life more than he was letting on to the outsiders who came to his town to get rid off evil witches.

This book is an emotional roller coaster and not for everyone. A lot of bad things that actually happened during the real witch hunts happened in the book and may be hard to swallow. However, the book was so well written, if you start the story, you would want to finish it.

The Witch Hunter.

Set in the present day, The Witch Hunter is an exciting work of ‘adult’ historical, paranormal fiction/fantasy involving the real witch hunter Matthew Hopkins and his sadistic colleague John Stearne. They were both active in England in the 17th century. Hopkins held the unofficial office of Witchfinder General. In their paid crusade, Hopkins and Stearne sent hundreds of alleged witches to the gallows, believing they were doing god’s work freeing witches from satan and the devil, while also protecting the public.
The tale is an unlikely love story; we see Taryn Guthry an authority on European witch hunts delivering a lecture on her extensive research to a packed auditorium, not knowing an ancient witch is in the audience who believes Taryn is sympathetic to the evil witch hunters. The witch sends Taryn back in time to the 17th century to experience first-hand the fear, cruelty, and barbarism of the witch hunter’s work.
It is clear the author has completed a lot of historical research, doing an excellent job, while showing a lot of imagination in describing this period of dark history, and creating a story full of danger and suspense. Note the story has adult themes.

Wow! Amazing and emotional

This book was a great read. It had me hooked from the start and I didn't want to stop reading. There is magic and time travel. Taryn who is from 2020 and gets sent back to 1647 to experience the witch trials of England, which she has studied extensively. She meets Matthew who is the witch hunter general. Taryn and Matthew have great chemistry. They soon face danger. The way women were treated at this time is not sugar coated, which can be hard to read for some, but is one of the many reader loved this book. Many times I was please don't let this happen but it did adding to the realism. I cried many times during this book but he story was so worth it. The book is told from many points of view which I think adds to the wonderful story telling. I highly recommend this book.

This book is not for the faint of heart.  If you've got sensitive triggers, this book is not for you.  That being said, this book is very well written, expanding over different era's yet both time periods are well represented. There are characters to love and those to hate, with very little in between. Their stories are entwined flawlessly. There are plot twists that you could never forsee, and as it plays out, the emotions you didn't realize had attached to the characters come streaming down your face... tough read emotionally, for me personally, however, written with graceful intention .. when it was all said and done, justice is served, and I loved it.

You need to read!

If you enjoyed Outlander then you're going to love this action packed, never a second to breathe story of Taryn being forced back in time to the 1600s witch hangings.
From the moment she is thrust back in time you will be at the edge of your seat in fear for Taryn. A time when on accusation could jave you hanged as a witch. The witch that sent her back never thought the infamous Matthew would fall in love and realize his misguided mistakes with burning women. She hoped she would feel the pain of 100s of women murdered by the hands of evil. This story was absolutely amazing. I couldn't get enough.
5 bright stars with some heavy tears and a HEA.

Sent back in time by a witch to be punished for something she is not responsible for.
Will she be accused of witchcraft and get sent to death as all other accused in the 1600's'
A romantic and scary story that holds you in a iron grip from the start.
During the whole book I was wondering how it was suppose to end.
I wasn't disappointed after I read it I felt a little sad it was already over.
Well written by a great author that never disappoint.

Love across time

This book was a challenge for me, I have spent 3 decades researching witchcraft and pagan paths, so when a friend posted the invitation to read The Witch Hunter together, I dove in blind. It is a first of this author, though based on this work I will be following her work. The 4 stars is based entirely on my own subject bias, not the quality of the read.

Good story

I really enjoyed reading this story. Taryn travels back in time to the 1600's, where people are thought to be witches. Will she be mistaken for a witch as she's so out of place? How will she survive. The Witch Hunter had a really good plot. Time travel romance books are starting to become my favorite.

Witch accused...

A very different tale surrounding the "witch trials". A modern historian is sent back in time and somehow changes how the witch trials ended. Contains some violent renderings, but is also a touching love story.

This is a short romance novel with 4 different POV's - the FMC, her BFF, the MMC and the main villain. Why all these were needed, let alone the villain's graphic narration of how he blackmailed and raped a young maid early on in the book is utterly beyond me, thus the 1 star DNF rating.

The writing is also odd and it appears to me that the author couldn't decide if she wanted to write authentic 16th Century English dialogue or totally anachronistic dialogue so ended up with a mix of both. I am curious as to how Taryn gets back to her own time, and indeed how the evil witch hunter MMC is redeemed, but not enough to actually finish it.
