Carter Ray has vowed off men. She and her daughter, Jellybean, have found refuge in the mostly female-populated town of Helen’s Corner. She wants nothing to do with the visiting wolf shifter, despite his wickedly delicious scent that drives her bear into a frenzy.

The last thing billionaire Alec Patterson expected to find in the small southwestern town was his mate. Now his biggest challenge is getting rid of the woman he came with before he loses his mate for good.

NOTE: In the late 1800’s, on a homestead in New Mexico, a female shifter named Helen Cartwright was widowed under mysterious circumstances. Helen knew there was power in the feminine bonds of sisterhood, and she provided an oasis for those like herself, female shifters who had been dealt the short end of the stick. Like magic, women have flocked to the tiny town of Helen’s Corner ever since. Although, nowadays, some call the town by another name, Hell’s Crazy Corner.

WARNING: THIS BOOK IS NOT INTENDED FOR READERS UNDER AGE 18.

This is the first book in the She-Shifters of Hell’s Corner series. This series is a spin-off of the Bears of Burden series, although each book can be read as a standalone.

WOLF BOSS is an adult shifter romance for lovers of paranormal, urban fantasy, shapeshifters, contemporary, and, of course, spicy, sizzling, hot romance. This is a standalone with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It may appeal to fans of Zoe Chant, Terry Bolryder, Harmony Raines Kim Fox and T.S. Joyce.

A wolf shifter meets his mate while on a trip with his fiance..

I'm so happy to be starting another series by Candace Ayers! This series takes place after the events of the BEARS OF BURDEN series, which I would recommend reading first as you get the story of Carter's brother Cannon and his mate Matt.

Carter moved to Helen's Corner after a disastrous split from her ex and is looking to start fresh away from men. So of course this means that she finds her mate soon after settling in, and Alec just happens to be on an "engagement trip" with his fiance. As Alec tries to break off his unwanted engagement to his boss's daughter, Carter distracts herself from her unwelcome jealousy by trying to fight her attraction to the one man she can't have and doesn't want...or so she tells herself. There was plenty of yummy angst, misunderstandings, and OW drama. Another great start to a series I can't wait to devour! ♡

Hero was a pansy jerk. He was engaged to a woman because he wanted her daddy's business. The fiance was a horrible, shallow person who treated the hero like trash and he put up with it. He then cheats on her with the heroine. And then, he still stays with the fiancee and is disrespectful to his mate on SEVERAL occasions. Could not stand him he had no balls. Then he goes back to the heroine and gives her a simple I'm sorry and then she just gives it up to him. Could not stand her either.

Cute story,very easy to read

Carter and Alex had to work through some things to find their happily ever after but that just made the story better. The characters are easy to like, the plot is right and the action flows smoothly. I loved the part where they weren't ready for love but it chased them anyway. This town is full of cool women with great potential. I enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.

3.5 rounded up

This is an insta love, insta mate, shifter trope heavy story... and probably just what you are looking for. I rated it only a 3.5 as it lacks any true substance, but it’s fun and decent, introducing characters that are interesting and side characters that will most likely become much more engaging in future tales.

Pros:
- Fun.
- This Book is exactly what it looks like.
- The idea of a shifter town mainly of women ; mostly shifters, not all).
- Rather sweet.

Cons:
- Very Little depth or substance.
- so trope heavy it’s painful. 😂

Light hearted and funny. I had so much fun reading this one. Single mom, beautiful child, hot sexy male shifter. There was fun around every corner. There were great characters and a fun atmosphere. I will be following this series because I want more of Jellybean, Alec and Carter.

Emotional Whiplash

I liked the last book I read by Ayers, but this one... It's not that the plot didn't have potential, it's that she gave these characters serious emotional backgrounds and baggage and then had them instantly work through it in only a couple paragraphs. It's that she jumped to insta love. Its that preschool cartoon characters take longer to work through their feelings than the characters in this novel. If you want something short and light hearted you don't pick characters with a history of abuse or who have a fiance. The quick rush through every interaction came across as making light of real problems people face. You aren't insta better when you've gone through what these characters supposedly did. And a real Carter wouldn't have been able to just trust Alec after all he put her through considering her history. There's no working for for forgiveness when he seriously screws up, it's just instantly giving. Things like emotional scars or forgiveness and trust aren't instant and neither is love. The seriously unrealistic emotional reactions of the characters ruined the story for me and makes it a series I don't think I'll be continuing.

This was an OK read. I really liked the idea of Helen's Corner, a small town with a bunch of female shifters running things. I thought both the MCs were fine; although, not much relationship building happens. The spot each other, realize they're mates, and then that's about as much development as they get. The bulk of the story revolves around Alec trying to remove himself from his engagement to someone else.

I think a few things in here could have been developed a bit more or in a better way. It ends up feeling a little abrupt.

Not one of the best shifter books I've read, but there's enough in here that I would read more in the series to see where it goes.

What a fun read it was the perfect companion to a rainy day

Carter has had a pretty tough go at the romance game. She has her little Jelly bean and a new start in a small town, for now, that is enough. She isn't looking for romance.
Did I mention she baked sweets like a goddess?

Alec is all about business. Even his fiance is just another transaction. Nothing beats the almighty buck. Until the sweetest scent of cupcakes and sugar cross his path (now you know why I mentioned she bakes sweets ).

Maybe it's time to reevaluate? Seems their current recipes for success may not be working quite as well as they believed?
Can Alec see past the blinders or will his corporate pride cost him the sweetest of life's tastes?
Can our sweet little Carter find her happiness?

This is my first taste of this series and I will definitely be returning for more. The story itself is a quick read written in true shifter fashion where the drive to claim your mate is stronger than anything else. So you know this has insta attraction all over it. The story flows well and the author packs a lot into the short time we spend with this couple. Me being me I would have loved more but what we are given left me with a whole lot of happy feels and I am hoping that as I continue with the series the picture will feel more complete.

Carter is a baker with a handful of talent. She’s also a mother. She’s also new-ish in town, a town full of shifters, but also humans; she’s also a bear. She works at an inn, and out of the blue the yummiest smell reaches her nose triggering a want for her mate. Her mate? A soon to-be husband to an awful woman, twist? He’s a Wolf. He also scents her. He also runs a bit wild.

Their main encounter in their wolf and bear skin happens in the forest. Their first time, in a cave. And from there is pretty Hallmark Holiday Season feels. Expect the expected, lots of humor lying around, but a tad hidden, a lot of distractions and a child kinda wanting to know why someone smells like mommy? The kid? Adorable. It had a feel of perfect family to-be, and an ease that belongs to trademark movies like Hallmark.
I have nothing to say without pouring everything from the book in here, and we don’t want spoiler reviews, do we? Good. I bid you farewell, and I’m off to my next book after finishing the pint of ice cream that I’ll pay the price dearly in a few moments or so. And yes, next book might be yet another shifter book; I have a few titles of this kind, as you can tell by my reading list this 2024. See you soo!

Sorry for any typos. I’m on the phone and I ain’t re-reading all that to catch errors. May it be. ;)

I freakin' LOVED this book! Wow - talk about your insta-love - these two were half in love just from the lingering scent of the other before they even laid eyes on them! The "mate" identification trope is fairly common with shifter stories (one of the things I love best about this genre) but here, it's instant, explosive, all-consuming, and about as inconvenient as possible! Carter has good reason to not trust men, especially Alec, who's visiting her town with his fiancee! Alec had all but given up on finding a mate and agreed to marry to facilitate a lucrative business deal, but once he saw Carter he knew everything in his life was going to have to change.

Theirs is a steamy, sexy, and heartwarming romance as they first recognize their inevitable connection and then work on all the getting-to-know-you stuff, complicated by both of their current situations. How they work through all this is a story that you just can't put down. It's filled with humor, angst, good friends, and great family members. I really loved how this romance completely changed both of their lives, giving them everything they never even realized they needed. Candace Ayers is fast becoming one of my favorite shifter authors. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Carter and Alec plus Jellybean

It was a good story with a HEA ending. Alec came to Helen's Corner with his fiancee to take pictures to match others the girls in her sorority took when they were engaged. He only agreed to marry Chelsea for a business deal. As soon as he walked into the B&B he smelled something good and his wolf was going crazy.
Carter's daughter Jellybean was visiting her uncle in Burden, Texas so she was alone. When Carter and Alec first saw each other they knew they were mates.
The only problem I had with this story was the cheating part. He had sex with Carter before breaking things off with Chelsea. He wanted to end things diplomaticly so he could save the merger.....Big mistake! Chelsea was a royal b*tch and there was no love between them, only business but I still don't like cheaters.
Carter didn't seem to appreciate the fact that his business was more important than her. Alec seemed to realize his mistake and tried to make up for it.
Jellybean was cute in this story and I loved the appearances of Cannon and Matt from the Burden series.
Wonder who will be next?

I loved this story. I haven't read the Bears of Burden, but will have to now. I loved that from the first moment Alec smelled Carter things started going wonky. Apparently his fiance doesn't know he's a shifter because she has no clue when he crushes her suitcase handle, breaks the table and a cup. I wondered if Muddy knew what was happening or was just laughing at the situations. Carter, I thought, should have had more faith in Alec and just chalked Chelsea up to sour grapes. I also laughed my tail off when Jellybean ran up and asked Alec why he smelled like her momma and promptly ignored Chelsea when she invited Alec for dinner. See the baby girl even knows what's what. This was such a great story about women supporting women, a man's love and willingness to give up so much for his mate and family. I adored Alec and his dad reconnecting in such a wonderful way. I do wonder if Carter ever made her Mate Cake. It sounded pretty tasty. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Carter has found her mate, unfortunately for her, he’s on an engagement trip with his fiancée when their paths cross.

Even though I wasn’t overly thrilled with the composition of ‘Wolf Purebred,’ I decided to go back to the beginning of the series to see if it filled in any of the blanks for me. Unfortunately, it really didn’t. In fact being familiar with Muddy and her story had me doubting her reaction and advice to Carter. Knowing her story it really didn’t feel organic, which makes me wonder how well defined the characters were in the writers mind when this series was started. Again, I liked the story but found it lacking in terms of depth and sentence structure. One of my biggest gripes about ‘Wolf Boss’ is the consistency of the characters. How can Alec possibly be insanely jealous of the thought of his mate with another man and not even care that she’s had a child with someone else? He didn’t even have a moment of frustration or jealousy when confronted with her child. It just didn’t feel right.

As far as series starters go, this one is a winner. Candace Ayers has done a great job of introducing the characters in small town, Helen's Corner and the more I read, the more I understood the second name, Hell's Crazy Corner. The story is engaging and fun, the characters are unique, and the dialogue is witty and often quite funny.
Carter is not looking for a relationship, let alone a mate, when she sees Alec for the first time and the stress that causes her makes for some mishaps in her daily life. Of course, Alec's situation doesn't help matters and what follows is a crazy few days for this pair as well as some serious heat, both in and out of the kitchen.
There were several great scenes in this one, but to go into them would give spoilers. I will say that I laughed out loud more than once and I did cheer a bit at the end of chapter 22 - I couldn't help myself. Of course, you'll have to read it to find out why. 😏

The one running away is the one that finds her one true love & she deserves happiness. Gotta love Jellybean

Author rocks! Well written it feels like yo get to know the characters. I read the Burden Bears and the 6 brotherhood in Burden was awesome. Cannon n Matt nice story and having them blend into this story real nice. Cannon n sister leaves Burden to move to Helen and her world tilts. Alec workaholic leaves NY for a engagement trip with fiance Chelsea. He not happy but he mixed business n pleasure never wise n this story rip proves it. Chelsie a mean girl n in love with one upping her sorority sisters. Alec discovers his mate...awkward fiance n mate same Inn. Yep you guessed it things happen. I would say a contemporary romance but its shifters so a little spin. I didn't read bonus books I already down loaded know the authors got me hooked. Violence1, Sex2

A BEAR WHO HAD BEEN MENTALLY ABUSED BY HER EX, BUT SHE MADE HIS WOLF FIGHT TO BE FREE!

Candace Ayers once again gets 5 STARS for her Wolf Boss, just a complete satisfaction of your hungry mind looking for that feeling of entertainment substance and satisfies that Shifter appetite. Oh, yes She-SHIFTERS of Bell's Corner Book 1, sets the imagination up to realize this series Candace will be bringing out all the whistle & bells of Shifters lives and it will be up to us readers to savor each book. I laughed out loud when Carter hit the So-called fiance at the lingerie store, then maybe I added a few hoots, (hehehe) and definitely had wanted to do it a few days earlier myself, when Jellybean had gone to get her special donut & met Alex he was so sweet to her that I wanted to hug him, but again ex-fiance spouted off comments that set Carter off and caused Jellybean some aniexty. Read this you will like the character you find in this wolf shifter that has come to town.

Cute

This was a cute book. I genuinely liked the characters and the idea of the setting and the whole small town vibe. Not a fan of the female lead Carter continuing to over react and get physical with her mate. She hit him upside the head with a frying pan, she hit him with i think a muffin tin? She also came from an abused relationship (which really didn’t delve) but made it hard to believe someone that timid could do those things. This was just too short of a book and too fast of a read. I want to know what happens with his business how it evolved, what happened to the ex fiancé, or her ex. These were like little tidbits that really make a story involved and show growth and it was just missing. It didn’t feel like a well developed story. So I hope the next one will be better.

As the first book in the She-Shifters of Hell’s Corner series, this one starts hot and keeps things moving with a light, fast-paced tone. I enjoyed the chemistry, the setup, and the introduction to a town full of strong, interesting women. It was an easy and enjoyable read, with just enough heat to pull you in.

That said, I was left with a few questions that never quite got resolved—especially around the woman Alec arrives with. It was unclear whether she was human or shifter, or whether she even knew what Alec was. And if she didn’t… was the plan to keep it hidden? That piece didn’t quite fit into the worldbuilding the way I expected.

Still, even with those loose ends, the story worked. It’s light, fun, and a solid kickoff to a series that only gets better as it goes. A good start with room to grow.

ALEC (She-Shifters of Hell's Corner Book 1) by Candace Ayers is an excellent read and a great start to this new series. This book introduces us to the town of Helen’s Corner, New Mexico. A wonderful well written story and engaging plot snare your interest very quickly and keep it. Carter and Alec really sizzle and it is all too easy to embrace these fated mates. Carter is a bear shifter, a single mom and wary because she has been burned by love before. Alec is a wolf shifter and he is trying hard to make both his business and engagement a success. Will these two give into this overwhelming attraction or will their past and present destroy their future? Grab this highly entertaining book to find out. I am posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.

Ok!

Alec Patterson, I believe would be the wolf boss but he didn't act like a boss; he acted mostly like an Omega.

Carter Day is a somewhat new bear shifter in town that baked like it's her job; she has a daughter from another man/shifter that didn't treat her right & that her brother wound up killing to not only to protect her, her daughter but himself as well. Carter is afraid to trust again.

Alec Patterson comes to Hell's Corner with his fiancee on an engagement trip when he not only scents but sees Carter & knows that she's his mate. But, he acts more like a dog with his tail between his legs than a Wolf Boss.

I didn't like this book as there doesn't seem like there was much of a plot & anything else going on but a back & forth of does he like me or not.

Want so much more

I liked Alec and Carter as the main characters a lot in this book. I enjoyed Jillian, Carter's daughter, and Cannon and Matt the helpful uncles a heck of a lot. The story starts out strong but seems to be missing the follow through on a spoiled, bratty princess scorned, when Alec finds his true mate and realizes the mistake he made by going along with an engagement to Chelsie. The resolution to that issue just disappears. Not likely. So although the characters are loveable the story needs more conflict. Follow through on what Alec had to do to resolve his problems with Chelsie, her dad and the merger would have sealed the deal. Carter's baking mishaps are adorable though.

Carter already had a very toxic relationship with her daughter Jellybean's father.... she got out of that badly scarred physically and mentally, so she has sworn off men forever. Until she catches a strange whiff that is, her inner bear is going crazy wanting to roll in it.

Alec is a wolf shifter that has been tricked into a relationship with a woman who can make or break his merger by just calling daddy, now he's on an engagement trip, something he's never heard of mind you. They are at a small town to take pictures according to his fiancé, but that all goes down the drain when he smells that wonderful cupcake. Alec never imagined he'd get a mate, especially not a she bear, but who cares the more, the merrier.

Lots of fun!

That's it?

I feel like there's a huge portion of plot just skipped over at the end. It's like nothing ever happened, just boom - those things we considered, totally unfounded. The relationship building? Unnecessary. The antagonist resolution (let's be honest, Chelsie and her daddy dickhead were antagonists) just not a concern, no repercussions from them. Let's just skip all the good stuff and give you the hea without the story. Boo.

Doesn't help that the MMC is a dirtbag that doesn't really grow so much as he gets replaced with a new personality when the author seems to have got bored. The FMC is a terrible mix of wussy doormat and aggressive bitch. They just don't work, either as separate characters or as a couple.

What a wonderful romantic read. I love PNR books and this one was fun to read. Carter lives in Helen's Corner with her daughter Jellybean and is the pastry chef for the B&B in that town. She has sworn off men because of the damage caused by her abusive ex-husband. Alec has come to the B&B with his fiance on an engagement vacation. As soon as Carter and Alec see each other there is instant chemistry. They realize that they are fated mates. What transpires is funny, romantic, emotional and oh so sexy. This book is a lovely shifter romance you won't want to miss.

Fated Mates, maybe!

The storyline is very interesting. The story flows really well from scene to scene. Carter’s had some rough times. She’s in Helen’s/Hell’s Corner with her young daughter to regroup. She’s sassy and smart. Alec is in Helen’s corner on an engagement trip with a different woman. When he is smacked in the face with the scent of Carter. There is insta-attraction between Carter and Alec as soon as they meet. They get off to a rocky start do to miscommunication and denials. There are some very hot steamy sexy scenes between these two. It was a fun, quick read. I recommend this book.

I fell in love with this story. Carter Ray and Alec Patterson we're great. The fiance was really good as well. I loved all of the sub-Characters. She has sworn off men to raise her daughter, Jellybean. He is engaged to a rich girl and he truly is only marrying because of a good business deal. These two come together when fate smacks them both upside the head. The flow of the story was really at a great pace and kept you glue to the pages which tells a lot about the Improvement of this author stories. I look forward to reading the rest of the series I'm glad I took a chance on this book 1 in her new series.

What do you do when you finally find your mate while being engaged to another?

This is the predicament that Alec finds himself in and he is desperate to figure out what to do. I liked this character because he wasn't mean about it but he knew he would have to break the engagement. Once a shifter meets its mate, its game over.

Carter is a strong character who is just trying to do right and raise her little girl the best that she can. However the appearance of Alec complicates this very much! She knows she should stay away from him because he is engaged, but her bear doesn't care. All it sees is that he is hers.
