Ash is tightening the noose on her enemies… … and losing her grip on reality.
Ash’s revenge plans for Chariot and Isaac Montefiore take a surreal turn when Isaac’s wife hires Ash to retrieve an item that Isaac is obsessed with finding. Ash takes the job, but this quest throws her back into Levi’s path and puts Rafael in grave danger.
Meanwhile, Ash runs across a crime victim who possesses mysterious magic. Ash’s search for the attacker once again pits her against the Queen of Hearts and sends Ash down the rabbit hole of what’s real. Sanity is highly overrated, anyway, right?
To top it all off, Ash’s mother is being blackmailed by someone threatening to expose Ash as a Rogue unless Talia resigns from her political career for good. Talk about putting the “fun” in family dysfunction.
Secrets, vengeance, and magic collide in the final chapter of The Jezebel Files. With love, family, and her enemy’s immortality on the line, a con set in motion fifteen years ago comes to an explosive conclusion, and Ash only has one chance to come out alive.
Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction books, and never looked back.
She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.
This is the final book in a UF series with character and story arcs that persist through the series. I definitely recommend reading them in order.
I'm really torn about this book. I hated the first, oh, half or so. Like, it's a lot of pearl-on-string episodes that don't cohere much. And it starts two months after the previous and Levi and Ash are all but enemies again. And I hated that so very much—not least because Levi was so unjustified in his withdrawal and acting like it was all Ash's fault he broke off with her. It's like he regressed a decade in emotional maturity.
And I was totally anxious about the blurb bit that said "Ash’s search for the attacker once again pits her against the Queen of Hearts" because that felt like it'd be another regression. But really, it's just that the blurb writer should be fired for incompetence. I can't tell you how much I loved the developments with the Queen of Hearts! That whole storyline was fantastic and contained payoffs on multiple levels.
Indeed, the last half of this was so outstanding I'm having a hard time trying to punish it with a three star rating (did I mention how much I hated that first half?). The thing is, once you hit a turn-around point, it's all back to Wilde's best form and all the emotional layers that come so naturally to her stories. Okay, there's a tiny sour note. I don't get the hesitance about killing people who, frankly, need killing. There's a confrontation scene where all three of the opposition are thorough villains who have proven, time and again, that they have no respect for human life or dignity. They're all remorseless killers with blood on their hands and are active threats to Ash and her friends. So extra jeopardy because mercy, or something, doesn't resonate with me. I hated that this wasn't better explored. It's taken as somewhat axiomatic that Ash should spare them and I wanted to see the axioms.
Anyway, four stars, reluctantly given. And I'm only reluctant because I hated seeing Levi be so much less than he had been.
A note about Steamy: There's a single explicit sex scene putting this on the low end of my steam tolerance. It was frankly gratuitous, but I liked it anyway.
3.5. The plot was all over the place with this final installment, and rather than tie up loose ends, the author brought more complexity then scrambled to bring it to a satisfying close. I had a hard time keeping up with the new characters and plot twists (maybe this is the nature of these kind of Sherlock-esque books?), and frequent references to plot points 3 books back made me scratch my head as i struggled to recall who was who.
Ash (very quickly) got over all of her emotional demons at the end of the book, which isn’t so much a spoiler as it is a critique of the pacing. The last 20% saw her overcoming issues she struggled with over the course of 4 books, and Levi is included in all of this. It left me kind of “meh” with respect to the action and the suspense in what i has hoped would be an all-or-nothing, no holds barred final fight. The big showdown was, by comparison, a scuffle with a hokey “big bad plans are revealed” speech made by Isaac. We never saw enough of evil-Isaac over the prior books, his villainy lived more or less off-page, so seeing him “in action” was also a letdown at the end.
All in all, I can’t say this is my favorite series, and I much prefer the author’s Nava Katz books instead. You’ll get the same snark and dysfunction, way more angst, and much steamier sexual tension.
this could be the final book, so no cliffhangers, we get a cute HEA... but I wouldn't mind reading more!! loved Ash in this book!! but then again me liking badass sarcastic queen is nothing new.. duh
If you liked Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series you might enjoy this series too..
4,5 stars this series overall deserves five stars for enjoyment, dialogue, and characters!!
My review of this final installment in the Jezebel Files series goes along pretty much as did the previous books. I really liked some aspects and others just perplexed, confused and/or completely annoyed me. So overall, I would have to rate this book and the series a good 3.5 overall.
My explanations are also pretty much the same, as they carried through all the books. So, here they go:
1. Love Ashira’s snarky yet caring personality and can do attitude. 2. Love the friendships and strong loyalty and commitment to each other. 3. Hate the antagonism between Ashira and Levi. We received this wonderfully idyllic pause for a bit in book three, but then for reasons I cannot comprehend, the author flipped Levi into a regression of all regressions and left him there until the last few pages of the finale. (This is probably the main reason I never could rate the book(s) higher. It just didn’t make sense. 4. Hate all the convoluted threads that don’t run true to form or character. In this book the biggest example is *maybe possible spoiler here* how the villains ALL get a relatively happy ending, by not getting killed and just fading off into the sunset! These were the most vile characters who tortured and murdered without thought, as a lifestyle, but yet Ashira et all forgave them and let them not only live but nicely put the handcuffs on and just ushered them off the page. Yeah, I understand mercy but not at the expense of justice with people (and readers) who NEED it! 5. AND… finally, the ending. I can’t decide if this one is a love or a hate. Every single thread was tied up in the last few pages of the book. I’m thrilled that we get to see the happy endings but I wish it hadn’t all happened in one large dump. It felt like the author was using a checklist of each plot point to finish the book and series rather than mixing those good endings throughout more of the story.
So… that’s my summation! Am I happy I read the series, yes. Would I continue reading others in this world, probably not. I think the style and layout of the stories just might not be to my personal preference.
A very meh ending to a series that started with all the right tools to be a nice read.
Look, I wasn’t a huge fan of the last book, I thought the drama between the two main characters was just an excuse for unnecessary angst. We start this new installment with some of that residual drama: Ash is pretty unbearable with her whiny attitude, Levi remains an inflated dickhead, and the rest of the characters are left dealing with them....a huge snooze fest, let me tell you. Then after the midway point, the pace picks up and suddenly we’re dealing with villains, revelations, internal conflicts, doomsday threats...all culminating into a final conflict that sparks the same response as being in line at the DMV. Also, the unrealistic conclusion! Not only Ash manages to get over al, of her personal issues in the span of a day, she loses her cool power in favor of becoming a glorified moral compass? Are you joking? And of course she ends up with Levi and they all live happily ever after blah blah blah... Would I recommend this series? Not really. The magic is the only saving grace of this series and that alone isn’t enough of an incentive.
Deborah Wilde brings the most amazing characters to life. You will be enraptured by Ashira’s quick wit, smart mouth, and all around badassery! I laughed, I cried, and I rooted for Ash the whole way through.
Revenge and Rapture is the fourth and final installment in author Deborah Wilde's The Jezebel Files. 28-year old Ashira Cohen is a Jezebel blessed with magic by the Goddess Asherah for the express purpose of stopping the men and women of the organization known as Chariot from achieving immortality. Jezebel's like Ash having been fighting Chariot for 400 years. Ash took over the job a little more than 4 months ago when her predecessor died. The story picks up several months after Shadows and Surrender.
After the revelation at the end of book 3 in the Jezebel Files series, Ash is more motivated than ever to bring down Chariot. But, she is fighting on multiple fronts and it seems like everything is falling apart. Chariot seems too big, too strong and her friends falter in their resolve. Rafael is suddenly 'indisposed' and Levi is struggling with his past. Will Chariot destroy everything Ash holds dear or can she rally her team? The final question is what will Ash do when she comes face-to-face with Chariot? Everything comes to an end and it becomes again apparent that the world is not black and white. Everyone fights for something and sometimes we lose ourselves to our ambitions. Ash wants to be able to live with her decisions and on the same time she wants justice. It is this older than dirt conflict about forgiveness and revenge. Ultimately, hate, revenge, rage will eat you up, only forgiveness will give you peace. Ash needs to look deep inside herself to find the strength to forgive herself and to forgive others who have deeply hurt her which is maybe one of the hardest things ever. Like in the other books by Deborah Wilde she is looking for direction in the religion, mainly Judaism and a bit Christianity. I found it always fascinating how easy she includes a religious context in her work and this time it is no different. And still, there is so much other 'worldly' action. We are again in for another fast-paced story where Ash has to solve multiple cases besides her work on Chariot. Talia, her mother is blackmailed and the Red Queen sits on another huge secret. Additionally, there are many Sherlock Holmes references through the plot which are a joy to read. All in all, Mrs Wilde delivers an awesome final addition to the Jezebel Files series. But... There is a huge obstacle in Ash and Levi's relationship which is only completely solved in the last chapter. The conflict is logic and adds a nail-biting event to their relationship. It is greatly worked out and in any other book of this series, than the last, it would have been exciting to read from the fallout to the reconciliation to the happy ending. But now I feel a bit cheated out of Levi and Ash couple time. With another book or novella I would not have minded it so much since it is well done. That is my only critic for this final book in the Jezebel Files series. Otherwise a truly great series with a satisfying ending.
Great finish to a fantastic series! I am sad to see it end but is was one heck of a journey to get here and I enjoyed every bit of it. I would definitely recommend Revenge & Rapture.
i can’t explain what made me pick up this book, or what made me blow through all four books, but what a perfect foray back into reading (slightly longer) book series for me. i guess choosing something that middle school me would have loved—magic, monsters, and snarky protags with a close knit group of friends—created a perfect storm.
some things about this series that kept me reading: - ash being a detective ALL the time, preserving her keen eye and her wit, and never once losing what made her so wonderfully, acerbically imperfect. you always had a sense of who she was and how much she chafed against everything. - i am a sucker for romance even if i stay away from romance-only books (i get bored! where’s the action? the intrigue? the explosions!) and ash/levi were honestly a surprisingly engaging couple. i appreciate the natural balance of both their shared history and their shared, complicated feelings for one another—it made sense for them to snip and bite at each other just as much as it made sense for them to care for each other. i was GENUINELY so invested in their relationship. - a GREAT magic system—easy to understand with so much room for creative usage and expansion. though it had pretty loose rules and boundaries, it fit the story perfectly. also a very interesting historical background for the plot! - the way every character fit into the story—they each had such a great role to play and filled their roles in such a lovely, satisfying way. mwah.
this series was such a fun read—even if the plot kept careening beyond my understanding, i am so glad i’ve read it anyways. here’s to you, little me!
When everything seems lost and trust is hard to give or find, you are faced with choices. Choices seem to be the word of the book. It was an amazing final to another great series, I'm pretty sad it's over :(
Worldbuilding: Great, as always. Not too much info, but a good amount of detail for all the scenes and environments. As this is the instalment where everything comes to a close, there is a lot of information coming Ash's (and our) way, but it never felt too much.
Character development: What we have come to expect from the author, great, great characters. They feel so real and believable, I love it! They are far from perfect, they have flaws, insecurities, they hate and they love, they make mistakes and they choose every day again who they will be that day. Ash has a lot of anger and hurt in her, in a way that is reflected in the people around her (which really does not help at all). She has some difficult decisions to make. Will she still be able to face herself in the mirror when all is said and done? Onward to the rest of the gang, Levi (don't mind if I do ;) ), Pri, Rafael, Miles, Arkady, the Queen, Moran and the list goes on... they're such great characters *sigh*. During the 4 instalments in this series we've come to know them all pretty well (except for the Queen cause she's just mysterious af) and I will miss reading about all their antics. Oh, btw, did you know Miles goes by Mimi? Yeah, though I'm not sure anyone but Arkady should call him that ;)
Pacing and flow: Were excellent! As I've said earlier, there is a lot of things happening and a lot of info being brought to light, but never too much at once. Great balance between action and conversation. I tried dragging the book out as long as I could, cause I didn't want it to end, but alas, it was just too good and I kept going back for more.
The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and while I'm truly sad the series has ended, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it deserves a place among my favourites. Very well written, an amazing and diverse cast of characters and a strong and interesting plot... I mean, what more do you want?? Recommended!
Book-specific: The one where I thought there may have been a tad too much going on, some plot holes that made me go "say what now" but with so many loose threads tied up, I get why it felt more frenetic than the other books. But I liked that it wasn't drawn out.
Series Overview: Now, I’ve torn through her books like a storm through a paper tablecloth so I can definitely say I like Ms. Wilde’s writing style and that this particular series is more focused on the relationship/romance between Levi and Ashira than the first. I like that this features a diverse set of characters who live in Vancouver and the mythology of the magic is slightly different than the other series I’ve read from Ms. Wilde. Also, the overarching storyline regarding Ash’s particular magic being designed to take down a nebulous criminal cabal intent on gaining immortality is strong enough to carry through each book, but even if there’s a mild cliffhanger in each, you feel satisfied that each book has a beginning, middle and end. I really liked it.
With each book in this series, Deborah's characters have burrowed their way deeper into my heart and I am so sad that this is the last book. I feel as though I know them all so well and am going to miss them.. Ash and Levi are now apart but with Chariot still looming large, Team Jezebel is busier and in more danger than ever, and interaction between the two of them is unavoidable and obviously very painful. Ash and Levi have become dear to me and seeing them alone and unhappy just made me turn the pages faster, hoping for their reconciliation. The rest of Team Jezebel are front and centre, with Rafael in real danger, Arkady finally 'fessing up, Miles being more Miles than ever, the Queen of Hearts and Moran very surprisingly showing their softer sides, and Priya and Mrs. Hudson just being Priya and Mrs. Hudson. Moran really endeared himself to me in this one, as did the Queen. They have both been enigmatic until now, when they actually show Ash different sides of themselves, and I loved this glimpse behind the curtain, especially at the end of the book. Arkady and Miles just crack me up as a couple, because two more different people you couldn't get. Ark is outgoing and funny, Miles is solemn and sullen, but they just work, especially when Ark calls him Mimi (a man less like a Mimi I couldn't imagine!) and tells everyone his secrets. So funny! Rafael is just marvellous and seeing him go through what happened to him in this book made me wish even harder for him to be happy, hopefully with Priya, who also deserves love. Levi was an absolute sweetheart, even when he was being stern and stoic, and my heart hurt for him through this book. And his own personal 'mood ring' was just pure genius on Deborah's part. Ash was a Deborah Wilde heroine.- fish out of water turned complete team player, snarky, intelligent, loyal, and full of love for family and friends. You can't help but understand her, feel for her, and love her. This is a fitting end to a wonderful series and now I only have one question to ask Deborah. Well, three, actually. Is it too much to ask that we get an Arkady/Miles spin-off? And a Rafael/Priya? And even a Serafina/Moran?
My heart was broken when the last book ended. The way she and Levi broke up was all I could think about. However, there is never a dull moment with Ash. Her dry sense of humor and her snark are always a pleasure to read. Goddess groupies, a golem, all kinds of magic, trips to Hedon, Chariot attacks and she's mostly on her own. I can't say enough about the characters depth, the world building and how it all fits seamlessly. By the end, my heart was light, the characters were alive and all was right with the world! I requested a free advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
This is one epic conclusion to this awesome series, one that I have really enjoyed from the very start! It’s well written and just sucks you in and is full of action, vengeance, magic, twists and turns, secrets are exposed and questions are answered. “ With love, family, and her enemy's immortality on the line, a con set in motion fifteen years ago comes to an explosive conclusion, and Ash only has one chance to come out alive. “Absolutely love the storyline and the characters especially Ash and Levi and how the author made sure all loose ends have been tied up! I am sad to seen it end but oh what a way to go out!
So, the plot was fine and I think everything resolved well in the end, but I can't say I enjoyed this final book much.
The first 25% was reasonably unbearable, as Ash was pretty unlikeable (even though I get how hurt she was) and her relationship with Levi was massively disappointing.
I love the writer's Unlikeable Demon Hunter series, and while I feel this series started off quite strong, I think the big (and reasonably pointless) break up with Ash and Levi at the end of the last book sort of killed the series. I was reading this series for them, really, and they spent 80% of this book either hostile or ridiculously tentative around one another. I was just a massive waste, really.
So, whole this was a satisfactory conclusion to a decent series, it wasn't one I ultimately massively enjoyed in the end, sadly.
A fabulous and explosive finale to a wonderful series
With each book in this series, the depth of storyline and characters has drawn you in to the world of Magic, with team Jezebel fighting against Chariot as well as friends fighting for each other and Ash & Levi fighting to find a lasting relationship.
This was a wonderful book and a fitting end to an exciting and action packed series. I left you satisfied with the series and yet still wanting more from this fabulous group and the world in which they live. A spin-off series would go down very well!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I love her books! They’re entertaining, witty, funny, snarky, and extremely well written.
All that being said: I just have to say, the ending of this book, of this series, was one of the most profoundly well written and encompassing conclusions I’ve read in ages! While I’m so sorry to have the series end, it was exemplary! HUGE kudos, Deborah!
I literally checked to see whether or not the writer of these books was a teenager, because that’s the extent of maturity, emotional and mental, that am willing to ascribe to her.
I had high expectations for the final book in the Jezebel series and it blew those expectations away. At the end of the last book Levi had broken up with Ash, and it was crushing. However, I think it made this book even better. We got to see Ash on her own and how strong she had become since the beginning of her story. She showed herself that she can stand on her own. This book had a lot of twists and turns, that I don’t want to spoil, but I will say everything was wrapped up. There is nothing of the overarching story left hanging, but it still felt like there was more to explore in this world and I am hoping Deborah will go back to it at some point. This book should not be read as a standalone, you should go back and read the whole series (and you will want to trust me it's great). This is a must read for any Urban Fantasy fans, its such a unique world and a great cast of characters.
Do I need to say more beyond I love this author, her characters kick ass...and more please? :p
Okay, I'm saying more. The way Ash just keeps on growing and dealing with all the ish is just damn. And it really hits home given the way her growth and change impacts on her relationships - and the way she handles her friends growth too. You haven't changed if you can't deal with others changing too. So it's really those bonds and small details that make this read a winner. Sure she kicks ass, the gang handles the big bad...but those moments of those smaller seemingly insignificant things that make the sum of a person is what makes this read a win.
This was one of the best conclusion to a series I’ve read in a long time. It wrapped everything up nicely. I loved how Ash and Levi resolved their conflict from the last book. I would love to see more with the Queen of Hearts but it didn’t take away anything from the story. I just want to know more about what led her where she was. The character development continue in this story and fleshed out even more. I loved the secondary characters just as much as I do Ash. Can’t wait for her next series.
This is a great story loved every chapter and I definitely recommend this series. The characters are so loveable but the twist and turns are so juices that makes you crave more until you have read the final passage. It's a must read book. Love the ending 😈😈💐
This was such an amazing way to wrap up the series. I loved all four books, but I think this was my favorite. So much character growth, loose ends tied in ways I did not foresee.
Just wow! What a fabulous finale to this series! I admit to not being ready for Ash and Levi's journey to conclude, but I hold my hands up, this final book does not disappoint. Drama, suspense, surprises and berayal ahoy. Impossible to put down, this is a definite one click book.
What a grand conclusion full of action, adventure, danger and mystery. The author has done a phenomenal job with building this world, its characters. I have always loved strong women characters and Deborah Wilde really delivered. This awesome ending had me on the edge of my seat as each mystery unraveled. We are in the finals and things are not looking good. Ash just broke up with the love of her life, her mom is being threatened and just when things couldn’t get worst, she’s no longer wanted alive just her blood will do. These books have truly been amazing. The author has delivered another great series you do not want to miss. I enjoyed every minute.
This wonderful conclusion to The Jezebel Files is action-packed, fast-paced, full of chemistry, danger, mystery, and of course, Snarky dialogue. The main characters are developed and I've come to love them and the vivid world-building that is present in Deborah's stories. I loved this series. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
This is a great book. I have loved this series as well as Levi an Ash's journey. I was not expecting all of the twists and turns in this final book. I will say this, the ending for this series is GREAT!!! I received an ARC from the author and I am leaving this TOTALLY HONEST review because I choose to and LOVED this book. Happy Reading!!!
