The Wartleys is a Christian cartoon and comic series that follows a family of four as they try to model Christian living in a compromised world. This book contains dozens of comic strips and panels originally created from 2009-2011. Compiled and published for the first time as a book, The Wartleys invite you to see snapshots of the parts of their lives that pertain to their Christian walk. We hope you enjoy these comic strips and panels. If you do, be sure to watch all forty 2-5 minute animated cartoon episodes for free on our website and download the 44-page comic book, “The Will’s Delimma” for free through Amazon Kindle, Apple Books or download the PDF version. This is not a humorous book but maybe it is supposed to be educational? for whom? It is vignettes of the lives of 4 white people done in 2 panels, a 3rd to state a conflict and a 4th in which all is resolved by a brief prayer or similar simple action. Most of the time the solution seemed to be a sewmingly simple admonition to "have faith".
As an older Christian adult with a lot of life experience the most similar experience Ive had is seeing the Stepford Wives movie. This works on 4 levels.
Art: appears to be computer generated and the proportions are slightly off. The effect is known as the "uncanny valley" where characters are unsettling. And no one *shows strong emotion, they only say they feel x. The art doesnt seem to change. At least Jesus lost his temper in the temple.Faith is an emotional experience as well as social and logical but you couldnt tell it here.
Teaching: people learn best from models that are maximally like them-- these cartoon people are as close to perfect as you will get. As such they are "not like me therefore what they have to teach can't apply to me." This is how humans think. Our Biblical models are flawed- David, Paul, Thomas, Moses, etc. This family should be too.
Theology: until you honestly address the big questions there isnt much reason to stick with a faith - eventualy it becomes pro forma. Why does God not answer my prayers? why does God allow suffering? Why has the church killed people in God's name? Honestly answer even if the answer is "I dont know"-- maybe a theologian could help. The theology here is too simple for adolescents or adults. Smart people start asking these questions at that age and if there isnt an answer they become a pro forma "Christian" just for the social life or leave entirely. There is no wrestling with the angel here.
Social: this family and associated people seem leftover from the early to mid 1970s? [Yes, 50 years ago]. The mom does have an executive job so there is that but the only adult person of color is implicitly associated with shoplifting as a youth [the only crime mentioned and almost the only time the character appears], perpetuating stereotyping people of color. The one child of color says their dad owes his job to a white person [look up the "white savior" stereotype]. There is no mention of Christian faith in the context of significant and common life issues like a philandering spouse, drug addiction, severe health crisis. This is a pretty weak or very young faith if it can only handle minor issues. The Old and New Testament are more passionate and have more questions and debates. The Old Testament even has incest [Lot and his daughters, or, to be fair, the daughters and Lot]. Maybe that is deliberate to get sales. But why then would anyone bother?
The heart was in the right place but the head needs to follow with logic and the heart needs to be honest to who people are. Or more description to clarify audience and learning objectives. Perhaps the author will at least edit the description of the book to moderate expectations, eg persons with 1 year or less exposure to Christian beliefs, an introduction to trigger discussions, or "safe for people who never question their faith and prefer to feel imperfect compared to this family." A set of questions to discuss to deepen faith and address the really difficult times would be good. That would at least convey faith is a process or a journey that can take a lifetime and has its highs and lows. God knows people are imperfect. That is no secret to keep frkm anyone for long.
Good color artwork. Author freebie. These Christian strips are suitable for all ages. This book includes strips from the wartleys and some trudy strips.
