Love can be deadly when your fated mate is a dark fae prince.
Rule #1 Don’t trust goblins.
Rule #2 Definitely don't trust fairies.
Rule #3 Sometimes hallucinations can be the deadliest thing of all.
Falling in love was the easy part. Met’s mom, his real mom, the Queen of the Underworld, wants Met to stay on the side of darkness. That means that I have to be evil or dead. I have too much shine to be evil, so....
Meanwhile, Moros, Jax’s blood father, the demon/succubus wants me so I can lure Nightmare back to him. It’s a good thing I’m so good at dancing, because I have to stay on my toes between two different kinds of evil if I want to survive and claim my prince.
I loved the first book enough to read this one, even though I’m not usually into YA. I vibe with weird. But this one was weird in a way I couldn’t vibe with.
Why two stars:
First, let me start by saying, I was expecting a single M/F relationship with a HEA. Have you ever seen the Pursuit of Happiness? It’s like 99% pursuit and then 1% happiness. I didn’t leave watching that movie feeling happy. I left feeling depressed because the pursuit was so incredibly depressing it was hard for me to really relish the happiness. (Though the story was great and touches on a lot of important subjects)
That was what does book did it to me.
I’m sad. Why? You ask. I’ll tell ya.
I wanted a single soul mate relationship that transcended the barriers of time and space and magic, Romeo and Juliet stuff. You know? Not a love rectangle. Every eligible bachelor ends up falling for El. She went from, “No one likes me because I pale in comparison to my Succubi sister” to “Everyone wants me”. Ugh. She turned into a Mary Sue faster than you can say whattheheck. -Why change her relationship with Abe? I loved that they had a platonic bro sis thing going on. It was so sweet and wholesome. For shame. -I didn’t like that her “species” kept changing and becoming more ridiculous. It was so confusing and ever changing. First she’s human then unifairy now something super op demigod like. Felt super slapped together or just random to keep it mysterious, but it was just obnoxious. -What was with the ending Vincent scene? Met has no remorse for his friend? He doesn’t even try to get out of that? He could have resisted a little. What a coward. And she is just straight up godmode TM now? Mkay. -I no longer like Met. This book made me hate him. I legit hope he dies now. -The way this was written made me ship nightmare guy which sucks because 1. Nothing came of it and 2. this became a love triangle and I hate that and 3. This was again supposed to be a M/F single relationship love story. It started so sweet in book one that Met was her “person” that she could stand to touch and now she is all over a bunch of guys like it’s nothing? It’s no longer special. It’s no longer a romance. Now it’s a soap opera. Bummer.
Disappointed. Idk if I’ll read the last one. I am no longer invested in any of the characters. This one undid everything that made the first one great. :(

Unicorn is the second book in the Her Dark Fae Prince series and it was utterly fabulous. There really is no explaining this book to anyone only to say that if you haven't read it you're missing out.
The Her Dark Fae Prince is the first series I've read by Juliann and I will admit I didn't really like the first book. It was confusing, I was just dropped in this world and the main character was very unreliable. However, the characters were amazing and complex so while I felt the book needed work I really wanted to know what was gonna happen to the characters and thank gawd I did because I would have missed out on how fabulous Unicorn was.
The story is told from El's and Met's perspectives and I am now categorizing this as an adult book, I didn't realize it was an adult book during the first book but now it's clear. El is totally one of those unreliable characters that you can't trust because she is actually all kinds of crazy but you can't help but love her and get sucked into her crazy. She is so caring and sweet, she doesn't let anyone including herself tell her that she can't do something, that something is impossible, she just does it. Nevertheless, she also grows and gets stronger in the middle of all this craziness and actually becomes a badass.
Then there is Met. I love Met and I love Met and El together, they are so good together, they fit perfectly but the universe (mostly Met's evil queen of a mother) are determined to make things hard for them. You can see how they love each other, and it's a deep kind of love. They take care of each other, puts the other first, are willing to defend and suffer for each other, and want so much for the other to be safe and happy. This is an epic kinda love story and I really believe they are fated mates, I can't see it being any other way.
Unicorn had way more magic in it, the characters are still fantastic, and the world-building got a whole lot better. Things weren't confusing at all and the story took on a greater magnitude. The story is weird and I'm weird so of course, I love it. The scenes from Met were informational and had good magic while El gave that magical untrustworthy vibe. It's just so unique and interesting with complex characters and has a very engaging storyline, I was hooked from beginning to the end and I am stoked for the next book in the series, Shine. I have absolutely no idea what's gonna happen and I am not completely ready for it but I am there.
A great continuation of this series! I don't have as much love for Wonder-Boy as I do for Met, but Nightmare is growing on me. The reader is sometimes in the dark the same way El is, but that means the mystery is fun to watch unravel. There were definitely a few lose threads that weren't complete resolved or explained, even though I have a pretty good idea of what happened (Nan). I would have liked confirmation one way or the other, but I'm hoping it's in the next book. I felt like throwing things at the end though. Stupid, scared Met.
Wow!! This book/series is easily my fave. I loved Penny Lane (Read the Darkly Sweet series for some great witch/mage hijinks!) but El is the underdog you love to root for. Or even dance with. So many twists and turns. Keep you guessing will they or won’t they... along with what exactly is she?
I did not like this book. It was too much angst and horribleness. Also I liked the high school setting in the first book, this one had no real place in reality, just the fantasy world.
Also, I don't like love triangles. Just let her have Met!
I have NO words. This was so good with a lot of twists+ turns. I am glad there is another book or I would loose my mind. I can't wait to start reading it!
Whimsical, fantastic, dramatic....Whicker delivers another original book in the follow-up to Monster. Her characters El, Met and Nightmare, are fresh and delightful in a crowed genre. Her writing style is superb. I cannot wait for book 3.
I love Julianne’s writing style. This series has been no exception, such quirky characters, the dialogue kills me and I find myself more often than not as I read El’s internal monologues. I hope there’s one more book for this world to give the characters some closure because it doesn’t feel done yet.
