This Dutch book is the 1st novel by this author after having written some poetry books, with storytelling that is of a very good quality and with characters that are human, lifelike and believable, but as you'll notice at the end of my review, this book is not only for the Dutch but also for a worldwide audience.
It's a tragic novel about the art-painter, Johan Steenkamer, who although being a well-known painter is very unhappy, whether it's about his family or work, and this is still hurting the more due to the fact that his father, Charles, left home when he was very young, and now still being with his mother, Alma, his brother, Oscar, and his ex-wife, Ellen, he's seeking the confrontation with every one of them, and all this due to the fact that he misses a father figure in his lifetime, and most of all his father's approval about his achievements as a painter, especially about his famous painting that's called "Het meesterstuk".
What is to follow is an intriguing story of a broken family, where emotions of love and hate run high, and where several family members can't cope with their lives, and this will be in a wonderful fashion illustrated at the end of the book by the author.
Really recommended for everyone familiar with the Dutch language but let me tell you that this book is also available in English and called "The Masterpiece" and several other languages, and so if you can get yourself a copy then read this lovely book and enjoy it for in my honest opinion it certainly is: "A Very Worthy Read"!
