Fire and brimstone, pitchforks and horns, eternal damnation; this is the story you’ve been told about Hell.
It is false.
Hell is far worse.
Covered in human skin, coursing with rivers of blood, bodies falling from the sky day and night; it will take much more than faith if you are to survive.
The epic battle between Angels and Demons has raged for centuries, but it’s about to encounter a twist: the arrival of Army Medic Silton. And before it’s over, the balance between Heaven and Hell will be shifted, shifted by a Wingless Angel.
Silton is a former army medic that has hit rock bottom. He lost his wife three years earlier to a hit and run driver. He decides he can’t take anymore and commits suicide. He then finds himself in Hell. He finds another person that lands there and they start off on a journey through Hell together.
At the same time we learn about the Devil, demons, and what it takes to keep this show running. It seems one of the main demons is the last of his class and the Devil wants him to disappear. That those that have been sent to Hell can earn redemption and that Silton is going to have a bigger role in this upcoming battle than just being an Unbroken.
This is a dark and wonderful story. I felt for both Silton and Monthly in this weird Hell. I love how important the body is to the world and the Devil’s curse. It is full of strange creatures that all have their place.
I quickly got into this story and had a hard time putting the book down for sleep and work. The ending was unexpected and great and I’m really hoping that there will be more to come in this world. I am definitely hooked.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
I absolutely loved everything about this book! The whole concept of Hell being like this is something I've never thought of, yet somehow made sense in my mind and hooked me from the very start. After reading about 50 pages of this book I described it as 'Beautifully disgusting.' Which I still stand by, however, the further I got into the book, the more I questioned, why am I actually finding it disgusting, it's the human body we're talking about.
Which leads me to another thing I adored about this book. The amount it made me think! After reading some of the conversations between characters, demons, and quotes from other books written by demons in this book (Which I would LOVE to see more of!)
Honestly, I was so involved in this book, I even bought it for my husband and insisted he read it too! I worried towards the end, how it was all going to work out and how it would leave me feeling. And all I will say is I am excited!
Set in a Hell made up entirely of human viscera and body parts, Silton is literally dropped into this extremely well realised world of demons and the damned. It's original and well written, and a version of Hell unlike any I've come across before. It's dark, very dark, and utterly alien. I've mentioned before that I love novels set in Hell, but this, arguably, is the first one I've read that makes Hell so awful there's nothing about it that makes me think I'd get used to it in the end. It's a self contained novel though clearly set up for a sequel or a series and I'll be first in the queue when it/they come out. I really can't recommend this highly enough if you like your horror extreme, original and very different.
Writing is sophisticated and liquid, with good pacing timing. Characters are believable, engaging, and have great interactive chemistry that adds tension, amusement, and know how to the story.
Perfect balance of drama and action. This book does a great job of fantasy elements where needed, but recognizes that fantasy is a setting, that we need to be able to picture. It's great in the vivid way the author describes it.
There is so much more than just words between these covers! I loved the way the author stayed true to the Fantasy genre, but managed to incorporate thrills, drama, and just enough darkness. This is a book worth reading if you enjoy a good escape into a new world. It is an adult oriented book that will take you on a quest and leave you wanting much more.
The Wingless Angel opens with a lovely juicy start, drawing you in at once with the eerie atmospherics setting. I thought the relationships between the main characters were very well done. Recommended to people who enjoy darker aspects of books, haunting almost horror like moments without being gory.
If you like a dark drama, this is the novel for you. Fabrice Wilfong skillfully creates a world of strange creatures, landscapes, and demons, with their pets. You can tell he's a great author, because he uses words you've never read before, but don't even notice. The characters are fantastic and you feel for them along the way. Five stars from me.
The main story is quite interesting once you get past some points that are very disgusting. A few moments it was hard to read due to the detail. However there is a lot of detail. If you like demon heaven and hell books with action and war you may like this.
If you even remotely believe in hell, this story will shock you. How did this author even think this stuff up??!!! You better be good you don't want to go to this help- shiver
This brought up several feelings and thoughts to ponder. The prose was great: plenty of specific and concrete detail, and none of that annoying over-explaining nonsense. An enjoyable and thought-provoking read!
This book was so good until the last 60 pages. The ending was so disappointing. This book was a story about surviving Hell (this book contains a lot of torture and hell fire....if gore bothers you, avoid this book) and redemption. This story was also told in two different perspectives, one of a demon working for the devil and one of a human trying to survive hell.
Storyline:
Silton, a military medic, ends up in hell for committing suicide. He has no desire to live after his wife dies. He encounters an Angel who tells him, "Hey, he don't need to spend eternity here. You can repent your sins and God will save you and bring you to heaven. You just need to have hope." Silton tries to survive.
Montley works for the devil as a high ranking demon. She has many jobs, but her main job is to ensure that those who end up in hell, stay in hell.
What an imaginative take on purgatory, hell and the afterlife. Our protagonist finds himself "down there" after a mortal sin and his adventures are the story. Turns out this place is kind of like working for a large company. Ambition, greed, nameless serfs, a few friends and horrible bosses are all included. The actual landscape of hell is a real treat and it plays heavily in this book. I gave this book a 4.5 star rating. The only negative is the unlikeableness of the main character. I thought some of his reactions to friends and neutral parties was a bit negative but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to horror and fantasy fans.
I enjoyed this book and found it a well written and thought provoking story. Our hero Silton, finds himself dropped into a Hell that is basically made up of waste human flesh, bones and blood. Demons are 'civilised' and use any humans they find as either slave labour or spare parts. As an ex army medic, Silton is better equipped than most to survive. I particularly liked the "Guides" at the start of each chapter, explaining a particular aspect of Hell from many Demon text books. I'd love to know where the story would go next, as the book ends in a place that begs for a sequel (or series)
