The time has come to reveal more of Rumi than the inaccurate portrayal of a new age guru. With careful selections from his work and accompanying commentaries this book will bring readers closer to his poetry’s true, traditional meaning.‘Everyone has, in their view, become my close friendbut they have not sought out the secrets within me.’— Rumi
Compared to Coleman Barks’ translation of Rumi’s poems in one of his books, The Essential Rumi, A Treasury of Rumi is a much better translation, complete with commentaries. This book was written by Dr Muhammad Isa Waley, published by Kube Publishing .
[Taken from themaydan.com : Dr Wiley worked for 45 years as a Curator for Persian and Turkis, initially at the British Museum, and then at the British Library, London. His main research specializations are (i) the classical verse and prose literature of Islamic spirituality in Persian, Arabic, and Turkish; and (ii) palaeography, codicology, illumination and cataloguing of Islamic manuscripts. He has written, contributed to, or translated a number of publications in these fields. The subject of his Ph.D thesis was the poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi.]
True to his qualifications, we get the deeper meanings of Rumi’s poetries in his translations. His words make more sense, his discourse more familiar, the verses more profound. He inserted Quranic verses in the discussion of many of the poetries. Rather than the more shallow and meaningless love, wine and music, we get the true meanings of compassion, generosity, and contentment.
In short, Coleman Barks’ translation of Rumi made him sound like a drunk poet expressing his superficial struggles.
Dr Wiley’s translation made us see Rumi as an wise, philosophical and spiritual man that his learned background would have shaped him to be.
It's a good book of poems with proper translation containing much wisdom relating to subjects such as origin of mankind, journey to inner self, purifying our hearts and intentions, spiritual aspect of humans, feeding our soul, death, inflictions and sufferings in life and the wisdom behind them, the ego, it's desires, 6 pillars of islam their importance, prophets, angels, jinns, purpose of creation and many more topics. Every chapter is interesting with reference to authentic hadiths and quranic verses with less inclination to sufi beliefs. Much beneficial.

"Sincerity in the spiritual path involves making oneself pleasing to the Divine Beloved rather than aiming to gain anything from Him. Patience and endurance are acts of the heart which are dear to Him, Exalted is He; and to make one's main aim the acquisition of such attributes rather than gaining Paradise is a mark of sincerity and 'ubudiyya, total servanthood."
I've been obsessed with Mevlana Rumi since I was around 13-14, despite being confused by the different representations of him and his work (i.e. fake quotes, secularising his work, people seperating Sufism and Islam). This is a good introduction to Mevlana Rumi and his ideas, presenting them through his discourses and poetry, along with commentary by Sidi Muhammad Isa Waley, who has studied his words for the past 30-40 years. This also serves as a good introduction to what the Sufi Way really is, and addresses issues like orientalism and the distorted image of Mevlana's work and Sufism in general.
I'd also like to shed light on Sidi Muhammad's PhD thesis "The Stanzaic Poems of Rumi", as this along with this book shows the "true" Rumi compared to how he is usually portrayed.
TLDR: if I had a time machine, I'd go back to my 14 year old self and give this to him.
every Rumi book would reminds me of my mother, i get it now why she loved his works, it gives me a sense of calm but at the same time his take on this life is something i wanted to embody in the future.
all and all i think Rumi's work is very timeless pieces that could transcend through time, worth to read!
Beautiful little book, feels good to touch and open. It has pearls of wisdom and poems that can soothe the heart. Obviously it just scratches the surface of the great Rumi, but overall a good introduction to the major themes of his poetry
