The title refers to Debra Kelly's decision after a devastating divorce. Suicidal, she makes a pact to not kill herself right away--to "wait a year," trying out a different life. She takes her three kids from Canada to Mexico: Cabo San Lucas in the early 1990s, the "pre-Costco" years when Cabo was still more fishing village than resort destination.

What ensues is an often hilarious struggle/adventure to buy groceries, procure a car, get her kids enrolled in school, and build a new life. At the same time, she discovers personal growth modalities that helps her overcome her despairing thoughts and grow stronger.

The book could benefit from a good edit, but even as an editor/writing coach who's a stickler for errors, I enjoyed her natural way with storytelling. And there's a gritty honesty to her book that a slicker version might water down. Because I live in Baja California Sur, it was especially fun to read about what it was like to live down here almost thirty years ago.

I hope she writes another book about what ensued during the thirty years after she decided to stay.

This book is so honest about the struggles of picking up the pieces and finding joy again. I couldn’t put it down because I just HAD to know how the story unfolded. Bravo for Debra’s willingness to share so that others can heal from similar situations! I look forward to her next book.
