How to Play Chess: And become an Evil Genius
Do you want to stimulate and upgrade the brain of a budding (Evil) Genius?This fun and educational book is an ideal gift for the inquisitive young person you suspect is already drawing up plans for their Space Station and Death Ray. I'm kidding of course, but they'll enjoy and respond well to the lighthearted style and will feel that they are being privately coached to reach their potential.
You just know they're smart enough to teach themselves chess using the colorful and often amusing illustrations in this book and will spend hours engrossed in the book. You’ve got plans for world domination, a cat and a chess set you don’t know how to use? You are an adult who needs to be taught chess from scratch because you totally forgot the few chess lessons you had in grade school and you don’t know where to start? Or you know, maybe you have a kid who wants to learn to play chess – which is the actual demographic this cute little book is aimed at… This book is for you!
For a few bucks, I must say that I got more than my money’s worth with this adorable little book. It was the very basic refresher I needed to take my chess set out and be able to play some basic games with my husband (who is a game scholar and whose infinite patience is greatly appreciated) until I got confident enough to move on to beginners’ books aimed at actual adults.
I would have loved it if there had been a bit more info about popular openings and a few more puzzles (because I really enjoy those), but this is a great little launching pad for anyone who needs a super basic chess 101. I will be passing it on to my nephews, who, hopefully, will not kick my ass too quickly.
