Separate is a riveting novella by L.S. Bergman set in a dystopian future, masterfully blending emotion with suspense. The story captures the reader from the start with a stirring electronic communication from the protagonist, Theia's love interest, Jay, launching a journey filled with intense emotions and tension. Bergman skillfully explores future realms through Theia and Jay's relationship, characterized by angst, love, and long-distance communication, weaving in elements of sexuality and musicality.

The author excels in vivid, evocative writing, particularly in world-building. The characters' backstories, revealed through communications, highlight their origins and the societal upheavals that left them orphaned. The futuristic setting is brought to life with innovations like interplanetary flyers and a coded dress code, suggesting advanced technology and strict social norms. The absence of social media adds a refreshing twist.

The narrative maintains suspense and develops characters profoundly in a brief format. The author uses the environment, such as the extreme weather and the protagonist's interaction with their friend Tobias, to heighten the storyline's sense of urgency and complexity. The switching of POVs in a first sexual/lovemaking encounter is particularly provocative.

Despite its futuristic setting, the novella pays tribute to musical legends like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Prince and incorporates themes of spirituality and traditional values like marriage. "Separate" is a thought-provoking exploration of personal dilemmas within a broader societal context, leaving the reader eager for further insights into this imaginative world and the fate of its characters.

I wasn't sure what to expect given I'm a fan of romance novels and that's usually what makes me pick up this author's books. This story was different as L.S. Bergman warns but different can be very good as I found out. The author's words provided full imagery and connection between Theia & Jay and in the end, I hoped their future together would be uncomplicated and "real".
