Geo Margilus is adjusting pretty well to his new life as lord of a castle in a fantasy world–or so he thinks until negotiations with the dwarves go awry, landing him in hot water. To make matters worse, someone’s spreading rumors of him being secretly in league with the daemons! And is that yet another damsel in distress for him to rescue?! The adventure never stops in the second volume of this classic tabletop-RPG-inspired tale!
Main character, Geo Margilus is Over Powered (OP) although his abilities and skills are from a TTRPG Table-Top Role Playing Game called Dungeons and Braves. This game does not use Mana-Aether-Qi-Ki-Magical Energy, but uses cards, spell books and dice to determine strength and duration of spells used. Geo is basically the pest control/executioner of this other world called Sedia. The author creates a passive-harem-like-retinue for the main character. Passive in the sense that it is not a Bacchanal (continuous sensual liaisons by main character with his underlings). Because Geo is Over Powered (OP), honorable, strong and protects the people of this other world, the women warriors around him feel attraction and safety around him. So at least the harem-like conditions are somewhat reached. This is also an isekai-fantasy (reincarnated into another world) Sedia. This second volume has 50+ pages less than the first volume. This second volume has 19 chapters and about 270+ pages. this second volume has several maps, character sheets and color and black and white illustrations. The maps are super positive to be able to determine the distances and the places where the stories take place. So main character is constantly battling the demons and monsters of this other world, Sedia. The thing is, this story needs more plot arcs and objectives to make it interesting, entertaining and polythematic (on various levels and themes).
All of the action of the first volume is lost here. We are quickly bogged down by the minutiae of Geo’s estate planning. It could have been an interesting exploration of classic feudalism, but instead it is a trite interpretation of land management distilled from other similar novels rather than from real research. There also isn’t a complete plot arc which has been all too common in my recent light novel reads. I will try one more volume to see if Mikawa Souhei can give us another adventure story with some actual adventure.
This, the second novel in the series is as much a gem as the first volume was. We see our hero starting to work on his castle he was given as a reward in volume 1 and we also meet the dwarves of the world he was spirited away to. The world-building in this novel series is amazing and one can not help but be glued to the pages of this brilliant book to see what will happen next to our wizard hero and his friends. If you love fantasy it would be a mistake not to give this beautiful series a try. Read it NOW!
It's a fun read! You find yourself getting lost in the world that the author creates and it's a fast read. The only issue that I have is that the plot is very erratic. At one point we're with the warrior clan and we end somewhere that feels apart from the starting narrative. It all ends up feeling like nothing has happened in this novel. Still, it is enjoyable and I look forward to the 3rd installment.
Decently entertaining story much is like part 1, but more slice-of-life and with few surprises. For me having played D&D and JRPGs raises it to 4 stars, but without it it would be rather bland. The fact that the MC is a good natured adult who acts like an adult from Japan and not an instant protagonist also helps. So I like it, but I can see others finding it bland and cliché.
I enjoy the story as related to role-playing game and the interaction between characters and environmental impact. Awaiting for the next volume as well.
