Cringy

I have watched and read my fair share of rpg style fantasy and my standards arn't super high. All i really want is some substance.

Sadly this lacks it for me personally. Following a generic set up with nothing special to note.

Sadly the title feels misleading as the dungeon gets very little focus.

I'd rename thus series 'What if I got a power boost every time I did ecchi things with girls'.

If you want cheese cringy mild fan service this is for you but sadly It lacked much beyond l that.

I'm torn between "disgusted that girls humor him" and "kind icked out that the author thought 'erotic interactions to raise MP' was a viable plot decision.

I didn't hate this book, but somehow that feels more like an indictment of the author's skills than anything more positive.

The main character, Noir, has the innate skill to mind summon the "Great Sage". But to be able to summon him, and use spells, Noir's best friend Emma, told him that with kisses or other physical shows of affection, Noir can recover his LP (HP is Health Points, but in this case, LP means Life Points). Instead of using Mana, for magic and spells it seems that this light novel series uses Noir's Life Points as "fuel" to be able to "steal" skills, "endow" skills, or "edit" skills. Yes! incredibly "broken" skills that would make anyone the best and most powerful "mage in the world". Because you can fill in the blank (as long as you have enough Life Points), with personal skills to defeat any enemy and at the same time, with "edit skills" you can reduce the power of your enemies.
Anyone, who would want to become stronger, would love to have a "private dungeon". Dungeons are places that with practice and training, you learn to defeat monsters to gain experience and strength and at the same time, with the loot they drop gain incredible amounts of money and wealth.
This Volume 1 has over 300+ pages, illustrations (half drawn, half done), blank pages, cover and information, with 27 chapters, and 3 bonus chapters containing side stories. This series was first published in 2017, it has it's manga version and an anime version with one season of 12 episodes.
Being already from a Noble family, having the prettiest best friend in the multiverse, having the "Great Sage" and the infinite ability to create, remove, edit or improve any skill as long as one has enough life points is surely the "easiest and fastest" path towards becoming the strongest mage in the world.
This series is not an isekai (reincarnated or teleported to another world). It is based in a medieval setting (swords and monsters). It is a harem series though. The more love and affection, Noir receives the stronger and more life points LP, he has and can use to level up and defeat all of his enemies.
Noir uses his new OP, skills, to become one of the best newcomers at the "Hero Academy". Yes this is also a "school or martial academy" series. It is of course a Dungeon series. I like the fact that everything is positive, the main character is imaginative, creative, and a good guy. Alice, Noir's little sister is a Siscon relationship. I don't understand the Japanese custom of "having feelings" for your little sisters. Incest (Inbreeding) brings forth genetic diseases. This is why incest is illegal, but it is also taboo. Only in some monarchic lineages, was incest favored "because it would strengthen the purity of the lineage" and create a lot of genetic diseases for their offspring.
Fortunately for me the reader, the positive is more than the negative in this light novel series. It currently has 6 light novel volumes (as of April 2022).

Summary--In this adventure fiction romantasy (a crossover genre between romance and fantasy), Noir Stardia has lost his job at an ancient library held in high regard only to discover a life-altering opportunity that he cannot pass up. There's a dungeon he comes across and enters, meeting Olivia Servant, a warrior maiden who's been missing for hundreds of years. Amid battles and developing harem themes, Noir begins to win the hearts of three lovely maidens (best friend Emma Brightness, studious Lola, stunning Luna, and perhaps even the legendary Olivia Servant). Will Noir become the best amongst his cohorts within Odin's Guild, or will he fall short of his newfound dreams?

What I love best about this book is the video game feel to it, which is something I didn't realize till now that I thoroughly enjoyed. In a funny way and on another level, reading this book made me understand the video games I play. I've been binge-playing the Rune Factory saga, and reading this made me appreciate it even more despite the two franchises having nothing to do with each other.

Although all the characters are powerful and work well together in this epic tale, I'd have to declare Emma Brightness as my favorite character. Now let me tell you why--
Emma gives off the girl next door vibes, but she's a high fantasy reimagining of the part.
Emma is so dedicated to Noir even amid his initial blindness to her affections for him that she doesn't care if he ever notices her; all she wants is to be there for him as she's always been (selflessly, in any way he wishes from her).
Of the beautiful love interests Noir Stardia has, I think Emma Brightness is his one true soul mate.
When Noir lost his job at the library, Emma quit, declaring the job wasn't worth it without him there, and she followed him into danger without question, which I thought was beyond loyal in the best way possible.

I don't care how unrealistic this light novel felt, I enjoyed it tenfold and ten times more! I loved the video game feel to the literature, the quite-literal energy stats shown throughout the book, the chances for advancing levels, romancing multiple love interests, magic, battles with broadswords, mythical beasts, etc.

I don't believe polygamous relationships ever work out long-term in reality, but in fiction, anything goes, so for now, I say more power to Noir and his lovely girlfriends!

I could feel something, almost physically, as this series became my latest literary obsession. I loved how much it reminded me of the Rune Factory series, but different, and it made me appreciate high fantasy video games and video game literature even more. Thank you for writing this brilliant piece of fiction, Meguru Seto!

Although I'd love to give specifics on my favorite part of this book, I felt every page from beginning to end was my favorite part. Honestly, I wanted to crawl into the book, become a fictional character within this realm, and join Noir's adventuring party! I wouldn't care about being a romantic partner to a man younger than I am; I'm into this series for the adventure alone, so if adventure was sworn to be a factor in my life within this series, I'm so in!

One scene that confused me was the harem contest, but the payoff concerning the prize was vital to the plot within this book. I won't give the aftermath of details, but for Emma, Lola, and Luna to enter the harem contest with Noir, I honestly think that was a ballsy move on their part. It's amusing to me, I don't think I'd have the cajones to enter the contest, but I'd be reckless enough to battle a mountain troll or dungeon reaper!

Considering I read this book in less than three days, I'll say all 330 pages of this high fantasy epic count as an undoubtable page-turner!

The only thing I disliked about this book was the ending, because that's just it, the book was over. Fortunately for me, I have the next few books in the series, but I don't want this series to ever end! I know of six books in total, and I think there's going to be an anime adaptation, but I don't know for sure (and if anyone can confirm the anime's existence, please let me know urgently--thank you!)

I loved the ending, how Noir teamed up with Luna to... Okay, I won't give you that spoiler, but the act was a selfless one of Noir's that gave me a new level of respect for him. He's the kind of boy I would've loved to befriend had we attended the same academy! He's brave, selfless, kind, giving, and someone I think will turn into a great provider when he begins a family.

Whatever opinions on the realistic attributes of this book are, I loved these characters, every single one of them from Noir Stardia to the sickly Lady Maria, and I'd welcome them all into my home as friends and ask to be a part of their fictional world if not their adventuring party.

If I was the author, there is nothing I would change to make this book better, as I think right now, this series is perfect as it is. I would simply extend the books (yes, even though I haven't read any of the others yet!) to make a saga longer than a mere six books.

From the first page to the last, I was hooked. This series is binge-worthy to all who enjoy a high fantasy novel series with video game vibes. Being that kind of person, I can't give this book anything less than a 5/5 stars rating, and though I just finished reading this novel and have two of the sequels, I can't wait to reread this book already!

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter?

The answer is NO! Meeting Olivia was the best thing that ever happened to Noir and to we the avid readers of his adventures. And I already have the second volume in hand and, barring golden slime and grey goblin attacks, am planning on plunging in later today.

Credit author Meguro Seto but also the unheralded translator and adaptor, Tiva Haro and Cae Hawksmoor. Together they created a funny and fast-moving story that rarely lagged and led to a satisfying finish, one that left a smile on my face.

The characters are all appealing, with the possible exception of Amane, Maria's aggressive hanger-on and self-appointed bodyguard. But she was thankfully MIA after the Hero Academy scenes and has now been rendered obsolete by events. I love Emma and Lola and Noir's kooky family, especially his sitcom dad.

Not sure yet about Elena, the Hero Academy teacher who enjoys way too much sitting astride our hero (not that Noir is complaining). That teacher-student thing is definitely a Japanese cultural quirk. On that note, the book does have its share of fan service, all of which is fun and light and never goes beyond naughty.

That Hero Academy of course brought to mind My Hero Academia, the popular superhero anime. I initially wondered if Seto was setting out to spoof that, but it appears to be in earnest. The world-building accomplished in just this opening volume is quite impressive. I appreciated how information was seamlessly woven through the story as it became relevant instead of confined to dreary data dumps. By the end of the novel I had a good handle on how this world works (enough to know I wouldn't want to live there eating crunchy grasshoppers and monster tongues!).

Among my favorite things were the skills Discerning Eye, Great Sage, and Editor. Very inventive and even more practical. Same for the Pocket Dimension that Noir can summon up to store the unwieldy spoils of battle. A little weird was earning LP by laying one's head in his mother's and sister's laps. C'mon, Noir, there must be a less-creepy way to bump up the LP, right?

A highly recommended book for fantasy fans, especially for those who also love Sword Art Online and Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? This series shares a lot of similarities, like the dungeons, the guilds, cute receptionists, and pop-up screens displaying pertinent data and, thinking of Bell and Hestia, a clueless hero with an abundantly busty girl clearly in love with him but to whose amorous advances he's hopelessly oblivious. This Hidden Dungeon series sits squarely in that same subgenre and rounds out the winning trifecta.

PS: My one quibble is that Olivia is Noir's mistress, not "master." Yeah, "mistress" has connotations of "the other woman," but it is the correct feminine form of "master." Just listen to no less an authority than K-9 on Doctor Who. Okay, that said, it's onward to volume 2!

So the summary sounded pretty interesting, I picked it up with hope in my heart and having not checked other reader reviews. Normally I skip the art in Light Novels and go back at the end to check them over but today I opened straight to page 1. Page 1 in the Light Novel has art and instead of it being pics with the names; that is page 2 and 3, it has the main character lipping another characters ear. I don't know if the artist has ever been asked to draw such an action, but from the art I am going to wager that as a no. The main character in the art looks like he’s enjoying eating her ear as it were a tasty bit of meat from a good meal. Confronted with this random bit of art, I ventured into the reader reviews. I now know what awaits me in this book. I am so disappointed. Let it be known, I have no problem with romance novels but books where the protag collects people like objects; with no thoughts or wishes beyond ‘oh protag is amazing’, gets my goat.

The writing level reads like a high school fanfic, which is fine but this is a published book. How. In the first few pages into the book, the protag starts off with an amazing power that has a major drawback. Using his skill causes cluster migraines. Painful. However a cure was found on the next page! Amazing! What pacing! The cure is making out with others! Less amazing. He uses his skill while making out with his childhood friend. It takes 7 kisses to get the answer he needs, which is a place to level up. His childhood friend acts like this was amazing, protag point of view lists this as nothing more than an experiment. After entering the dungeon he finds a cursed adventurer, who of course is female. She is chained to the wall and is somehow is over 200 years old and is shown to still look like she’s 16. She then gifts him all her skills and then he leaves her there. All of this by 22 pages in.

Long story short, I don’t recommend this book. You can find better books.

This one is a little hard to review. This light novel seems a little more western than most in this genre from characters mannerisms to their tastes in foods and habits. The aspects that point to it becoming a harem would counter that but I know that genre has blown up as a niche here over the last few years and there are plenty of western writers that write in it. Even the unique abilities the character has and gains, One I recognize as being in other Japanese media but the majority of them I recognize from a western novel in the same genre, the skill set just has different names. That's not to say it's the same or even the same story though completely different. Due to the fact that I'm reading a translation however I have no way of knowing if it's actually written this way or if the company translating it altered things for localization purposes like gaming companies and other media companies tend to do and were even worse about in the 90s or if the author was just trying to stand out. Anyways on the the meat and potatoes, The first volume is good, I like the main character enough and the skill set is interesting to see what he does with it. The powers charged by "interactions" (not just H) with the other sex is kind of off putting though and it guarantees harem or interpersonal fights later since there are already half a dozen girls after him by the end of the first book. There isn't very much world building but there is some background written in that's decent. Not much character development but it is the first volume. In the end if you like the genre you will like this.

This book does have some interesting world building and potential as we follow the protagonist's journey to increasing his abilities as an adventurer. On the other hand this has a LOT typical harem tropes that can be sexist and the girls are inextricably drawn to him, which can get very tedious if you've seen or read stories like this. Though I will acknowledge this leading man does possess characteristics that actually make him attractive to girls and he's not a mediocre, weakling that you find WAY too often in harem trope stories. I'm honestly debating about whether I'll continue reading this. I might give volume 2 a chance but if I can't find some truly redeeming qualities that make me move past the harem tropes, I won't continue reading this.

Did I enjoy: Yes, I scoffed, shook my head, but still laughed at the simple premise. It's simply written, if not some of the risque themes, I'd suspect the book was written for 8-10 year olds, so it was a nice and quick palette cleanser.

Can I recommend it: That's a hard no. The characters are flat, the premise is stale, and I'm unsurprised they turned this into a manga and anime series because of all the opportunities for shameless fan service.

Cute but quick

The story was cute and fun but I felt like the story was rushed, there could have, should have been more detail, more thought, more challenge for the MC instead of it just happened is the best way I think to put this at this time.

Ultimately I did enjoy the book and will continue to read the series until it gets to boring.

The story is a fast and entertaining read; however, there’s some fan service and mature related themes. I’m actually surprised this is listed as a teen book.

It’s nice to read an easy to visualize light novel but at times, I was thinking…. Is this situation really necessary?

If you prefer your isekai with strong characters , I’d seek elsewhere.

Little Actual Plot

The fantasy setting and protagonists skills have the potential to make for an interesting story...

But there's no plot development; only a series of cliché harem developments.

A decent book for a mild distraction

The book flew by myself because it was totally fine in showing off the set of characters, to show off how fast I went through it was amazingly impressive.

Ehh... I wasn't really impressed but I didn't hate it either. I think there's some sunk cost going on because I'm reading it mostly to see where the story goes after the anime finished. I'll probably give this one more volume to decide if I want to stick with it or not.

Interesting start

It is nice to see an MC in a harem that is not a blind idiot. There are still some issues with this story but I have hope for the future.

Bah. I don’t even know why I read these things. Is it because they feel like fast food books? But just like fast food, they’re all bad and leave me worse for wear afterwards.

A silly story about a young man stumbling on a treasure of sorts and bumbling into creating his own harem. It is very self-aware of the type of book it is, both in its worldbuilding, characters and powers. As a result it is a bit thick with the tropes to be honest, but it is mostly entertaining. Still, I am not a big fan of oblivious harem protagonist, and one that is a bit stupid at that. Probably not my type of story, but I can see how others like it.

A decent story, that may lead into a fun adventure but for now was okay. But, for my first light novel, was still fun.
