I LOVE this book - Max Lucado skillfully makes Christianity accessible to all ages in all situations! There are 10 chapter, each focusing on different ways we experience setbacks and disappointments (anxiety, loneliness, illness, grief, fear, forgiveness...) and where the Bible shows us how we can trust that God is working in the big and little things in our lives. At the end of each chapter is a section on reflection where there are journal prompts and scripture verses to refer back to in the midst of the messiness. It really is a reference manual once you read it, so buy the hard copy because you will need it again and again! I am reading this for a church book club discussion - there is so much to talk about here, it will make for hours of sharing, connecting and growing in faith.
What book seemed to find you just when you needed it most? This one, “God Will Help You" by Max Lucado found me and also supported me through a season of spiritual loneliness and grieving this past summer. I used it as a devotional. There are no words to express how the book gently led me through a dark time recently. Five stars and a recommendation that if your heart is hurting for whatever reason, and yet your faith is tattered and torn, the messages in this inspiring book will minister to your aching soul and rekindle the gift of hope in your heart.
Lots of wisdom in these pages. Lucado hits on several difficult issues and responds beautifully with scripture-backed truths on how God helps us through those difficult times. Each chapter is closed with several passages of scripture and a prayer. Really enjoyed this book. 😊
I randomly found this book and loved it! Max Lucado has such great insights that he communicates in a powerful way. I even did an entire podcast episode on the book, geared towards members of my own church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). Here are some of my favorite quotes:
🔹 Count on Christ
Before the Savior miraculously fed the five thousand, the disciples “counted the hungry people, the money in their bag, and the amount of bread and fish. They did not, however, count on Christ.”
“The next time you feel overwhelmed, remind yourself of the One who is standing next to you. You aren’t alone. You aren’t without help. What bewilders you does not bewilder him. Your uphill is downhill for him. … Give him what you have, offer thanks, and watch him go to work.”
🔹 Keep your gaze on Jesus
The author compares the story of Peter walking on water to him focusing on his doctor’s diplomas after receiving a difficult diagnosis
“God has hung his diplomas in the universe. Rainbows, sunsets, horizons, and star-sequined skies. He has recorded his accomplishments in Scripture. … His résumé includes Red Sea openings. Lions’ mouths closings. Goliath topplings. Lazarus raisings. Storm stillings and strollings. His lesson is clear. He’s the commander of every storm.”
🔹 Acknowledge the Savior’s humanity
When we “keep the humanity out of the incarnation,” Jesus Christ is “easier to handle that way. … But don’t do it. Let him be as human as he intended to be. Let him into the mire and muck of our world, for only if we let him in can he pull us out.”
🔹 Be grateful for God’s grace
“Jesus has seen every backstreet, back-seat, backhanded moment of our lives. And he has resolved, ‘My grace is enough. I can cleanse these people. I will wash away their betrayals.’ For that reason we must make the Upper Room of Mercy our home address.”
Even in the best of times, we all have troubles, difficulties to face. In this pandemic, many are overwhelmed by the chaos, the darkness, the isolation of lockdowns. For some, the depths of despair have led to suicide, but Max Lucado has a better answer for this “winter of our discontent”….God. In God Will Help You, Lucado says “No matter the challenge or the question, by God’s grace you can face it. He is up to the task. And he will help you.”
Lucado is, by nature, a storyteller, and he uses stories, both from the Bible and from encounters he has had with others, to demonstrate some of the ways God can intervene in our stories. In each chapter, he addresses a different issue and then provides questions for reflection and Bible verses to remind you of God’s help. He closes each chapter with a prayer that you can pray in those circumstances, because sometimes we are so overwhelmed that we just don’t even know how to frame our petitions. Lucado has a way with words. In talking, for example, about God’s grace, he says we have been “doused” with it. What a perfect description!
So, if you’re feeling anxious, fearful, stuck in your circumstances, lonely, sick, or filled with grief, Max Lucado can’t fix those problems, but he can direct you to Jesus. You see, God already knows about your unsolved problems and your struggles to negotiate everyday life. He sees your heart and understands your needs. He is there to give you guidance. In his book God Will Help You, Lucado shows how God will come alongside you each and every day.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I didn't want to put this book down, the more I picked it up the more I learned about myself. Everytime I picked up this book, the timing seemed to be right on point.. when I felt stuck, the chapter was about what to do when you're stuck.. when I was betrayed, the chapter talked about how to forgive.. when I needed inspirational quotes to remember God is with me, the end of each chapter lifted me up. The questions at the end of the chapters really made me think and work through my problems. It made me have to turn to God.
Max Lucado's God Will Help You focuses on the burdens what may seem insurmountable problems become surmountable when we seek first the kingdom of righteousness and then turn it over to God to receive mercy and understanding. Lucado writes that people are more anxious today due to the varying amounts of change, including that of technology over the past fifty years. He also covers how God will help us in times of fear, loneliness, sickness and overwhelming grief by using biblical passages such when Peter walked on water toward Jesus, which is only solved by having faith.
I've always been a big fan of Max Lucado, so when this little coffee table booklet was given to me at Christmas, I was happy. It did not disappoint. I enjoyed reflecting on the reflection questions. (Writing on a separate sheet of paper and not in book) I'll keep this booklet around to refer back to in this season I am in and possibly give to another when the timing is right. (Great gift booklet)
This book was gifted to me by an acquaintance who saw me suffering from a distance. I read it out of boredom but the simple lessons touched me and gave me so much needed peace in the last days. It has extracted many beautiful promises of the Bible and I wish to gift this to all my struggling friends.

That's the contents. Even the notes ate gain and will help you find other resource no how God will help you.
I have been feasting on Max Lucado books the past few months. He has such a gift of bringing the truths of scripture out in practical ways. This book was no exception. I found so many good answers to some of life’s questions in this book.
This a very straightforward book, but still containing a lot of references and relevant Bible passages. The structure of the book, covered by theme, also supports the easy reading. Finally, it is always good to listen a bit more from God’s words.
I love Max Lucado's writing. At a time in my life when things feel rather challenging, this book gave me a good reminder that God is with me at all times! Sometimes I just have to trust that in His time things will work out. I enjoyed every chapter in this book.
I read this book to my mom when she was in the hospital and after she got out. I think it brought her some peace. Even though she has gone into the later stages of Alzheimer’s Disease and now has confirmed heart failure too.
Very inspirational and encouraging ! Caused reflection on sad times, but times that I have survived. I have no one to forgive but myself. I still find that difficult.
