Rate this book
First Lady Audrey Graham adores her daughter’s best friend, Rena Jackson. In Rena, Audrey finds the loving relationship she longs to have with her own troubled daughter, Francesca. When Audrey's son, Stiles, comes home from Duke Divinity School, Audrey is overjoyed because he has decided to follow in his father’s footsteps in the church. Upon his return, Stiles finds Rena all grown up and quickly takes notice. It doesn’t take long for the two of them to fall in love, but Rena’s fairy tale life is disrupted when her old flame, Frankie, learns about the relationship. In this explosive novel, the old adage about what's done in the dark turns out to be more true than anyone can imagine.

My Son's Wife, I wanted to give a 4.5!

My Son's Wife is the edgy Christian fiction since it deals with surreal characters that we can place ourselves as the reader into their lifestyles.

Lady Audrey Graham was a widow who remarried to a Pastor (Graham), and had a son named Stiles from previous marriage and daughter Francesa "Frankie" they had a married couple. Frankie was the key character throughout the story that had a homosexual lifestyle due to her past predators. Unbelievably, Frankie confessed to her best friend, Rena, who she also experimented with intimately in the past.

Rena Jackson always bailed Frankie out of jail and situations she was undergoing due to her guilt of sleeping with her in the past. Then, when Stiles finished Divinity School, he returned home and fell in love with his sister's best friend Rena, later married, and discovered his sister and Rena homosexual relations.

Frankie was devastated when she found out she had HIV from one of her intimate partners.

Not only lessons were learned about what is done in the dark can come in the light, Rena Jackson prayed to God to be cleared from STDs and several months later she did have herpes. We will suffer from our consequences. I was pleased that the author, Lipsey, did not allow the character to heal from her illnesses, for her hidden secrets to come to the forefront, and Stiles divorced her. Not your happy ending.

What disturbed me the most at the end of the book, the mother, Lady Audrey Graham knew the truth about Francesca's molestation and covered it up from everyone, even when it broke wind (secret revealed), she still would put all blame on poor Frankie. Overall, we need to be careful of our sinful actions, we will reap what we sow!

This "christian fiction" novel was not what I thought it was going to be at all! It was so much going on in this book, really deep and controversial issues regarding Christianity and homosexuality in the black church. I thought the author did an excellent job touching on the taboos of homosexuality in the black church by quoting scripture that neither supported nor condemned it as being a sinful act. It was ironic that Pastor was the most understanding and forgiving of his daughter Frankie while still in the same breath he preached of her sinful ways. Pastor's wife Audrey was just a total mess and a perpetrator, allowing her daughter to be abused and doing nothing about it. She was the first lady of the church and she was so concerned with her image in the eyes of the congregation that she neglected her own daughter's accusations of abuse at the hands of her teenage cousin and the youth minister at the church. As a result, Frankie went down a destructive path in life. She was bitter and angry at everything and everybody, she was hateful toward her own best friend, she used drugs, and turned away from the church. The message of the book is forgiveness in the eyes of the Lord. It was a really good book and I was not expecting to like it as much as I did.

Shelia Lipsey is with out a doubt a great writer. The story she tells is one you can relate to. It’s not to over the top with preaching, and not the typical urban Christian novel. Her detail for writing is of expertise. She has the passion in My Son’s Wife. Meeting Frankie and Rena was like meeting someone you knew. Not only do you know someone like them, you can understand and feel their struggle. I read this story so easily. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Will the secrets get out? How can a woman cope with having a same sex lover and turn around and marry her brother? Can you see the drama, the secrets, and the betrayal? I highly recommend My Son’s Wife, not only does Lipsey teach the word of God in this urban tale, she allows us to walk in her characters shoes. You will know more about your self when you are done reading this story.

Audrey was a horrible mother to Francesca. The only thing Audrey cared about was how she looked to other people instead of trying to find out what her daughter was really going through. She applauded her son’s sermon, but in reality God may have sent that message to her, but she missed it.
This Christian family is good at preaching a word from the Bible but not living by it when it comes their way. First Lady Audrey tells her son there is no forgiveness when his wife deceived him, but not once as a minister correct her about what the Bible says. He threw a lot of stones and will forgive everyone including his mother, but not his wife. I could understand him telling Rena I can’t forgive you right now because I’m human and going through emotions and I need to let God move in me, but to listen to his mother who says there is no forgiveness and not correct her is a clear sign he has more growing to do than leading. The Pastor is the only one who tried to live by the word. Rena deserved better. Also how is the Pastor still with his wife knowing she covered up their daughter molestation.
Stiles believed God told him to marry Rena , but clearly did not get a clear message from God to divorce her, even though the relationship she had was before she was with him. Talk about holding someone’s past over them.

Who are we to judge

This book was great.it had a lot of drama. It says that what's done in the dark will come to light well for the Graham family the chickens came home to roost and they didn't stop until everything came out. I look forward to reading book two.

My Son's Wife is full of real-life drama and the kind of stuff that makes a reader's blood pressure spike. The way the author wrote everything from an omniscient point of view worked for the story well, otherwise it would have been difficult to know some of their internal struggles in the heat of the moment. I could hardly turn the pages fast enough to see how things would turn out. The romance was smoking hot, the characters were well-motivated in all of their dysfunctional behaviors, and the plot really grabbed my heart and held on tight. Each situation kept escalating until the deeds done in secret blew up in a number of characters' faces. When the truth finally came out, it really messed up their lives. The fallout was very well done.

The author did a great job at showing how turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to abuse because of how it might make you look (if discovered) ends up damaging the people you love most and ultimately hurting everything and everyone in your life. The author made a great point showing how parents blaming a child out of fear will not only make the child feel like they have no one safe they can turn to, but it also causes such deep pain that it can lead to destructive behavior. On top of all that, the author showed that self-righteousness and pride are uglier sins than even sexual sin because it blocks forgiveness, healing, and the ability to show mercy. God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble, right?

I loved Rena. She was my favorite character because she was afraid, but she did love her husband. She wasn't what everyone assumed. I think she got pulled into an abusive relationship at a vulnerable time in her life and then she felt like she couldn't get out of it. I don't believe that was who she was meant to be. I wanted to hurt some people when the situation was revealed because those self-rightteous, judgmental people showed no mercy, and honestly, if they'd listened long enough to hear the whole story, they may have come away with a different perspective. Because I didn't know how things would ultimately turn out, I kept thinking about the story when I was forced to put it down. Life tends to get in the way of my reading time.

In the end, I was a bit bummed how things turned out, but at the same time it was very realistic. The author set the stage for more drama, and I can't help being curious about how things will turn out in My Son's Next Wife. If the sequal is half as entertaining as the first book, I'll have a tough time putting it down. The author does drama well and she made me care about the lives of the characters. I zipped right through this book and can't wait to see how the next story will turn out.

Pastor Graham is the head of the church but not of his home. He’s so busy doing the will of God that he has forgotten about his first ministry: his family. First Lady Audrey Graham is a sheep in Ann Taylor’s dressings. In her mind, she is the perfect mother. In reality, she has spoiled her son and failed her daughter. Stiles Graham is his mother’s son. Great preacher yet he fails to practice what he preaches. When his wife, Rena, begs for forgiveness he not only chooses not to forgive her but hold her faults over her head as if he is the Almighty God. Francesca ‘Frankie’ Graham the common denominator and the root of everyone’s problems. She’s the daughter of Pastor and First Lady Graham, sister of Stiles and Rena’s lover. Frankie is manipulative and selfish but underneath her shell there is a little girl screaming to be protected and loved. She has issues but you will see that after her innocence has been stolen and finding out that her mother has known the entire time is the reason she is so cold and heartless. Rena Graham, wife of Stiles Graham and for the most part an all around great person. She has a secret that threatens to expose the skeletons in her closet.

The title of the book seems to suggest that the story will be told from First Lady Audrey’s perspective. It was not. The book is about the Graham Family minus Rena although she is a factor the secrets that reveal themselves were there long before Rena arrived. Rena has put up with Frankie through her jail stints, drug habits, unemployment and whatever else she seems to get herself into. It is after Frankie is sent to jail after a probation violation that Stiles and Rena’s relationship develop. Stiles see that his sister’s best friend is all grown up but can’t seem to understand why she can’t leave Frankie to clean up her mess. When Rena tells Frankie that her and Stiles are getting married hell breaks lose. Every chance Frankie is able to she threatens to reveal their lesbian love affair.

My Son’s Wife was a good read.As a survivor of childhood abuse, I was happy that the subject was discussed throughout the book. Not many Christian authors tackle subjects like sexual abuse, STD’s, AIDS, and homosexuality. Lipsey was brave and did a good job in shining a light on issues churches fail to see or choose to ignore.

This was my first time reading Ms. Lipsey's work and I have to say, overall, I liked 'My Son's Wife.' It had a good message about the things you do in the dark coming to light eventually, and the hypocrisy of some people (namely so-called Christians) when it comes to issues like homosexuality. However, while I liked the message, I can't say that I LOVED the book. It took me a while to even get through it because for the first maybe two-thirds of the book, I really couldn't get into it. The story started off kind of slow for me and (maybe this is just a personal thing) the consistent punctuation errors and editing misses kind of irked me. It wasn't until the last few chapters that I actually wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. Out of Francesca, Rena, Stiles, Audrey, and Pastor, I can't say there was a character that I really connected with. Certainly all of them had their issues (as we all do), but something about each of them just seemed a little forced. And while out of all of them I probably liked the character of Pastor best, I couldn't understand how a man of God as he was could tolerate his wife's treatment of their daughter for so long.

I was looking forward to Stiles' confrontation with Audrey about the information he uncovered and was a little disappointed when it never happened. The ending seemed a little sudden and abrupt, even though I know it was the first in a series. It just felt unfinished. As of right now, I'm not sure if I'll read the rest of the series; I'm mildly curious as to what happens next but I'm still on the fence due to the writing style.

Very good book. Touches on some very serious moral issues as well as how Christians act towards others. What was so interesting is how hypocritical Audrey and Stiles are. I understand Stiles being angry behind what Rena and Frankie did. However, he is a Pastor and it seems that he shifted to that role when it benefited him. Before marrying Rena he preached sermons on forgiveness and not judging others but after he found out what Rena did that only applied to others and not in his situation. Don't get me wrong. I would have been angry too but more at her actions and what she did. What I didn't get is that Rena stopped her relationship with Frankie when she became involved with Stiles. So he should be angry with her for not being truthful about that but it seemed like he thought she was still involved with Frankie. Frankie needed to start fresh. She kept getting dumped on. She needed to overcome what happened to her with a new enviroment and be surrounded by people who did not judge her. Pastor was the only person who loved without judgement. That is kind of good and bad for him b/c Audrey is so scandalous that he never confronts her on the way she treated Frankie. Audrey is the most judgemental of all. Good interpretation on how the church views moral issues and how they treat others who are not like them.

From the very first page, this book captured my attention. The story line was nothing I expected. At the start we see Rena attempting to break free from a love triangle but who would expect the triangle to include two members of the same family-one male and one female.

Although a central theme of the book is faith/religion the book doesn't come across as preachy. Each of the characters struggle with not just knowing the scriptures but actually living it.

Shelia Lipsey crafts a great story of deception, homosexuality, molestation, faith, love, and forgiveness. As read the book, there were characters like Frankie and her mother, Audrey that I just wanted to shake and bring them to their senses. Others I found myself rooted for hoping they would successfully navigate the tumultuous roads of relationship. I grieved for the loss of the innocence of a little girl, whose mother failed her.

I would have liked more from the ending of the story but I did like that Ms Lipsey didn't try to creative a pretty-bow-wrapped ending, which I often is unrealistic in many books I read.

"My Son's Wife" by Shelia E. Lipsey

My Thoughts....

What a read that had such so many secrets, lies and real life drama that will definitely keep your attention till the end. This author really gives us a read of real life situations that are so realistic and has happened in so many families. The characters were off the chain...from Pastor, First Lady Audrey Graham, Rena Francesca,to Stiles...all giving the reader one good read of what could go on behind closed doors. The tough word in the read is the word 'forgiveness' because it is so important all the way through this read as you will be left wanting what is going to happen next. I loved how the author used the scriptures in the stories...beautifully done! After you finish reading 'My Son's Wife' the reader will be left with thoughts of the read long after finishing it. Yes, it will be a long read and maybe not a happy ending but you will be left wanting the next series...'My Son's Ex-Wife...The Aftermath.'

Waiting for Part 2!,

Pastor Chauncey Graham and his wife, First Lady Audrey Graham have two children, Francesca and Stiles. Stiles' is following in his father's footsteps in the ministry. All he needs now is a good woman by his side. First Lady Audrey believes that woman is Francesca's best friend, Rena Jackson. But there may be more to Rena than meets the eye. Once secrets from her past are exposed, will she still fit into the First Family?

I loved Shelia Lipsey's "My Son's Wife." Five stars are simply not enough. In addition to the drama, it was an eye opener about Christianity. If there's one lesson to be learned, it's that people shouldn't be so judgmental. I didn't like how it ended and I am hoping it's because there will be a sequel. "My Son's Wife" is good reading and I recommend it.

I had a hard time getting starting on reading this one. The whole gay/Christian novel thing. However once I got into it. I was very plesantly surprised. I felt real bad for Frankie. She really went through it. She tried to tell her mom but got dismissed. Even after she got to be an adult she did not believe her about the youth minister. Stiles was looking for the perfect life and just did not see the signs with Rena and Frankie. He should have put two and two together, but I guess he was just smittened. Pastor was just too busy to notice anything. He loved God and his family but neglected them for the church. Rena was a liar and a deciever, she was only looking out for herself. She had ample time to tell Stiles everything before she married him, I guess she thought it would just all go away? I don't know. I would love to see a sequel.
