Cullen & Bain #3

Hell's Kitchen

Rate this book
Two cities in lockdown. Two cops in distress, separated by an ocean.

"Ach, it'll be fine."

Famous last words that leave DS Brian Bain trapped across the other side of the Atlantic from where he needs to be. Recording a podcast while the world ends.

"This is a nightmare."

Shoved back into operational policing to manage the lockdown in Edinburgh, Acting DI Scott Cullen is faced with some ghosts from his past. Ghosts that kill.

And with Bain thousands of miles away, can his long-standing plan come to fruition? Or will events dictate his actions?

Hell's Kitchen continues the Cullen and Bain Scottish crime thriller series.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Oh, how I loved this book... The characters, the conspiracy theorist, and the gritty dialogue - the best entertainment I’ve read in a police thriller ever" – Goodreads review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Excellent characters, fast pace, interesting story line" – Goodreads review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Incredibly fast paced with mayhem on both sides of the pond. Some crazy supporting characters make for a wild ride to say the least. A must read in a must read series. Don't miss any of author Ed James' Scott Cullen books." – Goodreads review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Hell's Kitchen is a perfectly paced page turner that switches points of view between Cullen's career ladder climbing and Bain's bitter foul mouth. Bain's chapters are a complete delight, and it's cool to catch more glimpses into another side of him. Hell's Kitchen has action, murder, conspiracy theories, a stolen bum pack, and the return of characters from past books. This is the best yet of the already wonderful Cullen and Bain series" – Amazon review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This story is filled with suspense, intense evil, and plenty of twists and turns. I love the relationship between Cullen and Bain, the same being absolutely brutal at times! The story kept my interest from the start, through every twist and turn, to the very end!" – Amazon review

The antics of D.S. Brain Bain do dominate the book. However we do find a softer side of Bain and a new family dynamic to further humanize him. Scott Cullen meanwhile tracks escaped prisoners who killed a transportation guard. Cullen is growing into his new "Acting D.I." role. A relatively short read at about 180 pages Kindle. Incredibly fast paced with mayhem on both sides of the pond. Some crazy supporting characters make for a wild ride to say the least. A must read in a must read series. Don't miss any of author Ed James' Scott Cullen books. Check it out.

Fast, fun read.

Excellent characters, fast pace, interesting story line. Love to hate Bain but even he also sole it seems. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Ed James is one of my favourite authors but this is my first Coronavirus novel and I wasn't sure how I felt about it at the start. I needn't have worried, it was a pleasure to read, I thoroughly enjoyed it and although it wouldn't succeed without the pandemic in it the storyline had much more to offer.

Much to his disgust Acting DI Scott Cullen is back in uniform helping to police Edinburgh during the city's lockdown, moving the homeless to safety and searching for the missing. Meanwhile Bain and Elvis are in New York at the end of a road trip to publicise their podcast, which to everyone's astonishment, is quite successful.

The two pronged attack of day to day life in Scotland and New York works really well. It has various threads from the beginning of lockdown woven into a very satisfying storyline which felt realistic without being too depressing. The American side of things is where Ed James injects his humour, and it is clear once again just how much he enjoys writing Brian Bain.

There will, I have no doubt, be any number of post Covid pandemic based novels, some good, some bad, most of which I will avoid. This one however, with its humour, familiar characters, and a few surprises along the way, succeeds on its own merits not because of any links to the pandemic.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to the author Ed James and Grey Dog Books in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it highly to fans of both the author and genre.

Oh, how I loved this book. This is the third in the Cullen and Bain spin-off series and they just get better. Cullen and Bain are great at any time, but the story being set at the beginning of lockdown, with Bain in the US and Cullen in the UK - brilliant! The characters, the conspiracy theorist, and the gritty dialogue - the best entertainment I’ve read in a police thriller ever. Well done Ed!

Disappointed

Missed out all the Bain chapters after the first one. Rest was ok but it was no more than a short story. And Covid is still too close.
