This is book three of the Crash Dive Series. Our protagonist is Lt. Charles Harrison who is finishing PXO School and has been assigned to the USS Sandtiger.
The book is well written and fairly well researched. I enjoyed the interplay of the various personalities of the crew. The author made me feel as if I was one of the crew. The author also made me feel as if I was inside the submarine. The book is easy to read. I liked the fact that each book is about five hours. This makes a good change of pace from the longer non-fiction books I have been reading. I am looking forward to the next book.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is five hours and six minutes. R.C. Bray does an excellent job narrating the book. Bray has won the Audie Award, multiple Earphone Awards and the Voice Arts Award.
And the awesomeness that is the Crash Dive series continues. I am so glad that a full collection of all six books was just put out on Audible as I snatched that the day it was released. Now I get to binge this series like I would something on Netflix.
Craig continues with a great series related to a job I wish I could have taken in the Navy, a submariner. This particular instance deals with a core concept of military service and that is succession in the chain of command. The pressures, trials, and tribulations of being in charge of the lives of others, being tasked to command a multi-million dollar war machine, and making life or death decisions that could have positive or negative impacts for all of those under your command. This is a pressure I could never fathom being placed in and is one that I have the utmost respect for those who find themselves in such a situation.
Craig continues to nail it with this series while hitting on the nitty-gritty portions of military life. Bob, as usual, continues to hit a home run with his out of this world narration style.
I was able to purchase the Omnibus boxed set of this series, which includes the first three books of the series; Crash Dive, Silent Running, and Battle Stations. In this thrilling naval journal we follow Lt. Charlie Harrison’s career from first war patrol in an old WWI S-55 submarine, to the Salmon-class? Sabertooth, then the Gato-class Sandtiger. With each boat Charlie learned his craft by doing, his inner self finding a home in the submarines. The action and tension is non-stop, fast and furious. The story came alive. The narration was exceptional, R.C. Bray once again performs brilliantly; vocal sound effects for the enemy screws, sonar, and battle stations a plus. For navy submarine fans this is a must read. I really enjoyed this series.
Mr DiLouie's writing is excellent and fun to read if you are not a former Sub Sailor. Some errors that seem minor but grate when you know why. Fire is not a word used in a sub unless there are flames. The word is shoot. The stern tubes have propeller shafts in them. The after tubes have torpedoes. I love historical fiction and this series rates with the great ones like John Jake's.
I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. It checked nearly every box! Action packed! It also faced a lot more of the real side of war more than the other books have yet. The reasons war happens, the reason for war-time propaganda and its effects, the fight between humanity and savagery, the difference between fighting the good fight and war crimes. Fine lines and difficult decisions are discussed and I think that is really important. Great story! Here we go... Book #4.
This was an ok book but I was on the boats and there were a lot of things that were not correct but and distracted from a good story. If you have never been on a diesel boat then it would have been better reading.
Obviously I found them interesting enough to read all three I had hopes that they would get better to true life but they did not.
Did not think he could do it. Come up with a more daring and dangerous plot line. But by Neptune, The old goat DID IT!!! May be the best book of the series! May have to amend my review after I read the next one, but this one takes the cake so far!!!!! A great read, hard to put down, all honors to Mr. DiLouie!!!!! - R. Craver.....
Craig DiLouie has done an excellent job of the Charlie Harrison third novel, It's submarine warfare at its ugliest with plenty of death amongst Charlie's colleagues and crew and loads of action.
Lt Harrison always seems to find himself in difficult situations. This story finds him as XO on a sub with a Captain that is determined to kill as many of the enemy as possible.
Probably the best of the Crash Dive series. Good adventure story with excellent descriptions. Not as much explanation of terms, equipment, etc., as that was all covered in prior books. Only negative I have with this one, like the prior, is that the ending was a little too fanciful and over-the-top.
Gave it 4stars basic WWII NAVY submarine tale if your an old swabbie with Dolphin wings you’ll love it. I wouldn’t get in one myself. I’m a cruiser sailor.
This book along with Submarine! By Commander Beach and The Wake of the Wahoo is one of the best books I've read about the submarine war in the Pacific. Another is by Dick O'Kane, but I don't remember the title. The story was incredible, and the characters were believable. I'm anxiously looking forward to Mr. Louie's next book.
A well written book with lots of action. I Would suggest that more research be done by the authors concerning naval terminology,, regulations and law. The commander of a naval vessel cannot hold court martial and cannot impose the death penalty and would never excite a pow.
