This book was unexpected in some ways and yet entirely expected in some others. Loki Renard's Ours is located in an alien world which is a haven of sorts for discarded deities from cultures around the world, where the predictable lives of its oldest residents Ragnar and Helios is disrupted by the sudden arrival of the human Rael from a future AI-controlled Earth. The world-building and premise of the story hooked me in pretty instantly. It also helped that Renard's writing is very smooth and easy-flowing. What I appreciated most however was the initial complexity with which her main characters are presented. The switching perspectives help tease out the layers of motives and motivations that each of them have and how these are perceived by the others. The dynamics of love and power between gods and humans that this story explores to some extent is surprisingly thought-provoking. The irony of gods being these superhuman figures of mythic imagination, who on the one hand desire to wield power and control over humans by demanding their love and worship, but on the other hand are vulnerable to that same desire to be loved and adored offers a complicated but potentially very interesting tension within the narrative, which unfortunately goes unexplored in this book.

The book delighted me in its unexpected treatment of its subject till about roughly the point where the sex/romance came in, after which point the book continued into its genre expectations, without retaining the initial complexities that it had promised. While I am aware of the fact that it is a dark fantasy romance and I probably would have been happy with it playing to the usual tropes of its genre if that was all that the author had done. The fact that they grounded the romance in such an intriguing world with characters who are initially built as complex, with unknown and conflicting motivations set my expectations from this book in a different direction than what the author set out to achieve. Ours does not even work well as the dark fantasy romance it is intended to be; the author has neither explored the dark fantasy elements (such as the themes of immortality and mortality, godhood and power, the power of belief and unbelief) to its fullest, nor the elements of sex and romance (such as themes of love between unequals, the power of desire, vulnerability and control). While it is obviously possible to write sex without romance, I found the romance narrative lacking in consistency and written with an uneven pace that renders it not quite believable. It is difficult to invest in a relationship that lacks in that element of credibility, and when one of the characters finds themselves in a life-threatening situation, I only felt half-heartedly invested in their fate and found it difficult to care what their possible death might mean for the people who they supposedly cared about. In all honesty, Ours reads like two very different and individually incomplete stories which were melded together without smoothing out the edges, and while enjoyable for the reasons I mentioned above, it also feels like a lost opportunity for writing a truly fascinating work of fantasy romance.

Mythology, meet Dystopian. That's the extremely simplified description of what the premise of this book is. And even though I say that, I feel that it's like looking at a tornado and saying it's wind. It's just the tip of the iceberg even if it is accurate.

There is a lot going on in this one. Part of that is because it's the first in what I know is going to be an incredible series. Part of that is because Ms. Renard loves to write complex characters and detail-rich story lines. This story focuses on the Gods Helios and Ragnar, and the human female Rael. Helios provides a lot of the humor in the story. He's a little like a rebellious teenager - he wants to keep Rael because he's bored, he's king of the world because he said so, he wants to keep things secret from the other Gods. Ragnar, on the other hand, is the more strict, more disciplined, more dominant one of the two. He lets Helios have his ideas of grandeur even when he disagrees with him. He's also the one who is determined to find out what is really going on, he's slow to trust, and he's the Alpha in this trio.

This story has a lot of steamy sexy scenes, a rich backstory that I can't wait to dive more deeply into, and characters who are easy to connect to. I loved every second of it!

This was not what I expected but I absolutely loved it. There was a clever underlying reflection on society in this one. Observations and moments to make you think. Woven in with gods and Demi gods and a feisty human. Plenty of LOL moments and Loki’s fantastic dialogue full of wit and smarts. I am so glad I found her writing.

Good

This was a good book. I love reading about the gods. I haven't seen any with Helios before this one. Good though. I will have to check out the other books to this series. Thank you.

The writing and editing was clean in the ARC version of this manuscript, with only occasional typos. The world building was okay. The characterization was good, with the heroine and two heroes being sympathetic individuals. The development of the romantic relationship between the heroine and the sun god was sweet, but I felt like Ragnar spent most of the novel being intensely antagonistic toward the heroine, and I did not fully buy into those two being in love by the end of the novel. The plot and pacing was exciting, making me turn the pages rapidly to find out what was going to happen next. There was surprisingly little angst on the heroine's part, and high stakes throughout large sections of this novel. This novel used the Enemies to Lovers trope and a hint of the Daddy trope. The world building was three stars. The plot and pacing was four stars. The characterization was four stars and the development of the romantic relationship was three stars. I rounded up and gave this story a combined score of four stars. This story has a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus to this story. I recommend this story to readers who enjoy speculative fiction BDSM romance novels. I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series when it is available. I don't think I will be buying myself a keeper copy, however.

Rael is granted admission through the barrier between realms to Okeanus, the land of Gods. Helios allowed her to come after getting a prayer for help. When Ragnar sees what arrived he's furious and wants the human gone. She is not what was expected. A human male infant was expected but Rael is a grown female, the most dangerous kind of human as Ragnar puts it. The two gods, Ragnar and Helios are as different as night and day but really, both do have empathy though they show it differently. I loved Helios from the start, but eventually learned to love Ragnar too. Rael is a brat, expecting to have what she wants but the gods teach her otherwise. Not all the gods of Okeanus want a human on their planet and act accordingly but Helios takes her as his and he is King, so it's his decision. Ragnar fights it from the start but he and Helios agree to share the human female. Of course not everything runs smoothly and when it's time to really need help to save their human, a questionable god gets involved which will prove to be very troublesome in the future. This is not a story to explain in a few sentences but I recommend you read the whole thing, the life of these gods that's complicated, yet enriched by the human is a tale worth learning about. I am definitely looking forward to the next book of the Possessive Gods and the mysterious Tanuk.

So excited about this new world of old gods and a dystopian Earth. It's a story where gods have retired to a world far away and humans no longer have the ability to believe in a higher power after they found themselves enslaved by the machines they created to help them. One human dates to defy the Entity that enslaved the humans and sets off across space, crying out to the old gods to hear her pleas for help - one god hearts her prayer and offers her refuge but with it will come great change to world that had known peace for thousands of years.
Helios fashioned himself as the king of the retired and old gods. Those who were driven away by humanity when there were no believers left. This little planet had no one on it but Ragnar and the two of them slowly started saving fellow castaway gods over the millennium, but he is restless now missing something. Could he miss humanity and their lusts they insight? Whatever it is her is not giving up this human female?
Ragnar knows this female is nothing but trouble. She is a liar and up to no good. He can feel it in his bones. As soon as he felt the oceans boil on her arrival, he knew the change she would bring would be chaotic and possible Earth-shattering. She will punish her and dominate her for being a human even he can't stop what is happening between them. The path that the Fates have set these three on will change not only this world but possible Earth, too. I can't wait to see what happens next.

This story takes place on the alien planet of Okeanus, a refuge of sorts for obsolete and forgotten gods, goddesses and other deities. We meet Helios and Ragnar, who are complete opposites in their appearance, personalities and in their attitude toward Rael, the human female who is newly arrived from Earth hoping for sanctuary on their planet. Is she an innocent refugee as Helios believes or the harbinger of doom as Ragnar predicts? After all, despite her obvious intelligence, how could she have managed to get herself across the galaxies on her own as she claims? Something doesn’t quite pass the smell test here.

This story is very different from the previous books I’ve read from Loki. While I enjoyed the backstory of the two gods, the first half of the book seemed to drag on quite a bit and I almost didn’t finish it. I’m glad I persevered though. I enjoyed the interactions between Rael and each of the men as she tempered her personality and her actions/reactions to suit each of them. I’m not certain if she’s the victim or the instigator of her circumstances – she’s that clever. There’s plenty of drama, some mystery and a twist, along with some steamy M/F and M/F/M encounters, as well as some disciplinary correction.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "OUR" (POSSESSIVE GODS) WOW!!!! Loki Renard you are just simply one amazing creative story teller you never know what to expect with your books but everyone is a pleasant surprise you thoroughly enjoy.
Helios is King of Okeanus Island use to be God of Sun Ragnar welcomed him to the island a long time ago guarded Yggdrasil where he protected a tree of life it was where all God's that had been replaced with new God's.
Rael left Earth after sending a message for help before she was killed by the Entity her message reached Helios he welcomed her to Okeanus but Ragnar was angry and wanted to send her back.
This is definitely a must have book a bit slow in beginning cause it explained alot about the God's but as the story went on thints got much more entertaining, intiguing, captivating, twists that you never saw coming.
I absolutely loved the chemistry between Helios, Ragnar & Rael where Helios was soft and caring and Ragnar she called a brute he was the disciplinarian they were light & dark and she connected them together.
I Soooo can't wait for the next book in this awesome series "BAD TWIN" read the the short except on this one and it will be a very interesting read with Tanuk the very mysterious God we'll find out more about him.

Helios and Ragnar have lived their lives as God since forever. They didn’t expect for a human to be sent their way. They expected a child, a last plea for help. They never expected it to be not a baby but a woman. Rael cheated her way from Earth. She made it look like a plea but she wanted no more of what Earth had become or would turn out to be. She also didn’t expect two Gods that would hold her accountable for her lying to them.

I have to say, it was a slow start in the beginning. Helios, the sun god and Ragnar, I would say nature instead of a tree. But anyway, their lives a dull and Rael happens to shake it up a lot. Ragnar wants her sent back. Nothing good comes from a human. Helios sees her as a change, perhaps even fun. We are introduced to many Gods and demigods. But there are those that want to make trouble and will towards the end. The differences between the two Gods are like light and dark, as is their passion for Rael. A couple of surprises that had my mouth a gap. I await the next in the series, “Bad Twin.” We will learn about Raine, Lucy, and Tanuk and who he truly is.

Interesting book. Matrix meets Rudolph's Shiny New Year. Rael lives on Earth in a society dominated by the Entity. She lived in her own little pod and was hooked into a central consciousness and lived in virtual space. She managed to get out of her pod and so that life wasn't what she thought it was. She researched through Entity and found out about Okeanus. Okeanus is where the gods fled. They each live on their own little island (the Rudolph's Shiny New Year reference). Rael sent a P.R.A.Y.E.R. and Helios, the god of the sun in Greek mythology, allowed her to come. Ragnor is another god and he protects Yggdrasil, the tree that connects the nine realms in Norse mythology. Helios decides to let her stay and to teach her obedience. Rael wants nothing to do with obedience, she wants her freedom. Both Ragnor and Helios want her so they share. There is a HEA for those characters, but the set up for the next book leaves lots of questions unanswered. I enjoyed the story. The whole concept is intriguing. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Fantastic new series!

WOW! I Loved every second of this story. It was suspenseful, thrilling, sexy and highly erotic!

Rael is a survivor and a real spitfire of a woman. She’s tough, feisty and fierce. Not even a god can stand in her way of getting what she wants. Helios and Ragnar are two very sexy but totally opposite gods that have fallen for Rael. They want to teacher her some manners and obedience but all she wants is her freedom.

”I am a rebel. I am a criminal. I am everything I was never supposed to be, and you will not break me Ragnar.”

When these three are together they had me laughing like crazy and also melting into a puddle of goo with their passion and sexual chemistry. I adore these three amazing characters and definitely want to read more about them.

”Another time, Ragnar. I’m not in the mood.
Ah yes, human females, always acting on the impulses of their glands. Do you ever tire of being a walking hormone?
Do you ever tire of being a walking asshole?”

So much fun to read! I'm am very excited for the next book!

I received this ARC via Booksprout and am leaving my review voluntarily. This is book 1 in a series.

Triggers: unprotected sex, 1 scene mfm, spanking

**spoilers**
Human Rael sends a false message and escapes from a machine controlled Earth. Helios, God of the sun and Ragnar, God of a tree? - both were driven out of Earth thousands of years ago and landed on Oceanus - a planet? dimension? far away from humans. Many other Gods and demi-Gods have also made their home here.

Helios received the distress message and thinks a male infant is being sent. Instead it is an adult female human. Rael is a brat. She lies. She is disrespectful.

This story starts very slow with alot of background until around the 60% mark. I didn't feel any connection between the 2 Gods or Rael. 24hrs after meeting her, Helios is in love after they have sex. Rael then has sex with Ragnar. 48hrs later, she's in love with both Gods. Some drama. Quickly resolved. HEA

There is a blurb for book 2 at the end and it sounds much more interesting than this story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Every time I think Loki Renard has outdone herself, she comes up with something new that just blows me away. I'm a huge mythology geek who loves to hear the tales of all the "Old Gods" and this one felt like it was written specifically with me in mind. Ragnor was already living in the realm of Okeanus when Helios arrived. Even after an untold number of years, Helios had never forgotten how Ragnor had accepted into the realm so when he heard a desperate prayer being sent out to all the old gods for help, Helios accepted the call. Expecting an infant male child he was shocked when a full-grown naked female arrived. And that's when the adventure starts. The characters were so beautifully flawed they were so easy to relate to and the world-building was incredible. If this first book is any indication of the caliber that's coming with the rest of the series, the count me in all the way because it's that good.

★ A creative fantasy which picks up pace by the latter half ★

—>>> “Humans are wayward by nature.” - A miracle missive from the human realm results in the arrival of a female onto the shores of Okeanus, much to the surprise of Ragnar and Helios, two castaway ancient gods who have outlived their use and power on a dystopian Earth. Rael was an unexpected delight, her wonderment while taking in the beauty of the isle, being pampered at Helios’ palace, and partaking in existentialist discussions with these two super-being males, shaking things up on the isle, certainly. Nothing else matters to her now that she has been freed from spending the rest of her life at the mercy of the system governed by the all-mighty Entity, an AI-based ruler. The flip side is that she has to learn how to respect them and to accept their discipline if she were to even have a chance to remain there. A creative fantasy which picks up pace by the latter half of their story!

What a fantastic new series by Loki Renard! Ours tells the story of the gods Helios and Ragnar and their human Rael. Rael is allowed into Okeanus, the land of Gods, under somewhat false pretenses. Ragnar wants her gone, one way or another, because human women bring nothing but serious problems for the gods. Helios is more pragmatic, he is intrigued by the beautiful human and wants to know more. To protect her, Helios takes her as his and this angers some of the other gods. I loved these characters, Helios was the charming, glowing, charismatic King, Ragnar the warrior, brutal, always itching fro a fight, and Rael, beautiful, innocent, and compassionate with both her gods. The story was well paced, funny at times, and steamy at others. I cant wait for the next installment go these Possessive Gods!

Helios and Ragnar are demigods living on an island called Okeanus. Helios is filled with light and sun and acts as king. Ragnar is deep, dark and the caretaker and defender of Okeanus as well as a special tree called Yggdrasil. Rael, a beautiful, young, human, female, hurdles through space after praying for sanctuary. Helios is thrilled with her; Ragnar wants her gone.
Eventually, they both learn to share her loving treasures. Rael tends to be a bit of a brat and a liar. Helios is gentle and kind, but Ragnar is able to illicit truth and obedience through his harsh discipline. And, Rael learns to appreciate both gods.
This story is filled with so much adventure, excitement, erotic experiences and caring that I cannot even begin to delve into them without giving spoilers. I cannot wait for the next book.

Oh I definitely loved Ragnar most from the beginning. I identified well with him for sure lol. He was sarcastic and dramatic to a fault. Helios was the sweeter, kinder of the two. They had their hands full when Rael arrived. She was as stubborn as a mule. Their story started off a little slow but became interesting. I liked how Ragnar and Helios spoke differently. As if they had an intelligence above all else, which was exactly the circumstance. Overall it was a good read. Definitely a story to take you away from reality while you read it.

What a treat! This is a wonderful start to an exciting new series Loki Renard has done it again! We live on a world two old forgotton Gods, I'm Helios God of the Sun yes I drive a charriot with winged horses and my best friend Ragnar he guards his tree Yggdrasil with his mighty axe and we are dying. When I receive a P.R.A.Y.E.R. I think to myself maybe it's time to open our hearts one more time but instead of an infant male we get a woman, a beautiful woman at that. With Rael together Ragnar and I start to remember and enjoy all the things we were missing being in exile, including love, family and a new life worth living for.

Uhm what?

I’m not sure how this got 5 stars lol, but whatever. The whole thing is cringe worthy and awkward.

MC is rude and arrogant, remembers then she doesn’t then she does, falls in love with two gods after they do the do and nothing makes sense lol. I made it about 70% before I quit. There was no character development, no actual plot, just rushed words that the author put out. And, honestly, I’m sure the author worked very hard as do all authors; however, this is not worth 5 stars.

If you like stories that do not make sense, MCs that fall in love after a day, no character development, etc. this is the book for you!!

The word Oh My God has a new meaning after reading Loki’s newest book and wow...I was not expecting to read this...
A human has landed in the world of the gods but it’s not a young woman that fell not a child as was expected by Helios and Ragnar, and when Rael literally dropped by their feet their quiet lives as they know it change....
The story was a little slow to start, but certainly picked up pace really quickly and with thought provoking humour, twists and and hot damn kinky scenes definitely made this an awesome start to this series...

Start of an exciting new world we are introduced to Rael who manages to crash land her way onto another planet, into the path of Helios & Ragnar who have very different attitudes in how they should react to her presence. Differing in their treatment of her she very quickly learns that she must obey by their rules or their will be consequences.

This little human will get under their skin whether they want it or not, she may just have found her new home. Lovely read, excited to read the next book in the series.

This is an interesting story by Loki Renard. I always love reading stories by this author. Her worlds are always so interesting and amazing. I love this new world and the beings in it. Rael is a human who has been able to get on Okeanus where the gods live now. Earth is a very different place than they remember but humans have forgotten these gods. Helios and Ragnar are friends who differ on what to do with the human at first. But one thing they both agree is that she is now theirs forever.

Fiercely protective, possessive and passionate just doesn't do justice to the feelings evoked by the small human Rael when her pleas for safety and security are heard and approved. While Helios is more of a gentle lover, Ragnar's roughness is a turn on she can't deny. Will her actions and emotions cause strife and division between the friends or will her human nature showcase the integrity of caring?

Helios is dying for a change to the stagnant life he’s living out of touch with every other being except for the few gods that inhabit the planet. He grants the human race a prayer and he expects an infant male what he gets is a adult human female and she is gorgeous to boot. Ragnar is livid that Helios is even contemplating keeping her. Rael appealed to the gods under false pretenses but once she is there she would do anything to stay. Helios as a gentle and attentive lover while Ragnar is rough and brutal at times but she comes to crave both styles. The story ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to continue the series!!

Oh I am loving this new series with the older God's that are forgotten in a land no one knows of, it is very unique and exciting.

Ragnar is a brute that loves punishment and Helios soft and loving now with a human woman changes everything. Rael is super sassy and does not hold back as she tells these two sexy God's how it is, I loved the characters they were fun and interesting and so different with very descriptive details in the writing I loved it.

Nope. Just nope.

I'm a jerk. I know. I know authors out their works of art up for us to read and work hard on it. And I do feel bad about this because you don't see my stuff up on Amazon. Anyway, this was just silly and foolish. She loved two gods within a day of waking up from a frozen pod. Just no. And we all know Eternity is Skynet. This was bad and I only made it like 58%.

I started this book and wanted to like it so bad. I honestly thought it was going to be right up my alley and that I was going to really enjoy it. But shortly after starting I realized that the writing style just wasn’t for me. I wasn’t connecting with anything that was happening and I was struggling to continue. No part of me wants to continue reading this book unfortunately so I have to DNF it.
