Review for Volume 4 of Tales of the Tendo Family

I'm four volumes in, and I still find myself questioning why I keep giving this series another chance to improve. Unfortunately, the story remains as unclear and perplexing as ever. The central theme seems to revolve around a family plagued with deep-rooted issues, but the narrative doesn't offer much in the way of explanation or depth beyond that. The male lead, who is from this troubled family, is a reflection of these problems, and frankly, his character isn't evolving in any compelling or redemptive way.

As for Ran, the female lead, I'm at a loss. While she's crafted with certain strengths, her overwhelming flaws seem to overshadow them completely. I want to root for her; she's pitiable enough that you hope she finds her way, but her inexplicable affection for the male lead—who is questionable at best—makes you lose any sense of support for her. Their relationship feels forced, and I struggle to see how, or if, the male lead will ever be redeemed in a way that makes this romance believable or satisfying.

This volume, much like the previous ones, leaves me feeling disconnected, with no real clarity on where the story is heading or why I should continue to care.

I'm glad that I decided to continue on with this story after its three-volume trial run, because the storytelling reached another level in this one! I have the feeling that "Ran" and Masato could eventually become a great "you and me against the world" team protecting each other against the predations of Masato's objectively terrible family.

Although the action scenes feel somewhat languid, they nicely show that Saitō has more skill with dynamic body poses than I'd earlier believed.

It's very obvious that . I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out in the next book. :)
