His shadow crossed her frail body like some menacing presence as he stood. He leaned over to brush her thinning hair from her face, and kissed her forehead, trying to reach her beautiful mind. “I'll be right back,” he whispered in her ear. “I'm going to the store, but it will only take me a minute, okay?”In 1982, John Armstrong walks into a convenience store. He emerges with a second chance at life. He believes he's been given a gift - but at what cost? Windfall is a dark-themed fantasy/time travel story about a man who thinks he's won it all.
The story explores a wide range of emotions through John’s eyes. It goes from the utter despair he feels watching his sick wife fade away a little more each day, to murder.
Thrown back in time Jonh gets to seduce his wife all over again. Their love knows no bounds and he’s bent on doing everything right this time. He thinks he’s won the lottery when he takes his wife to the doctor early, on a hunch, thus saving her life.
He rebuilds his life and everything seems to go well. It’s the second chance we all dream about. John even wins the lottery and now that they’re rich, he gets to offer his wife the best of everything.
But fate’s a cruel mistress and cheating death is not without consequences. The second time around the loss is even greater.
The end is bitter-sweet, reminding the reader to appreciate what they have and take nothing for granted.
Windfall is a bitter time travel romance that will pull at your heartstrings long after you've finished it.
The story follows John, a man whose been dealt a tragic cup, struggling to keep his head above the sorrow. He finds himself transported back in time and is given a new chance at life and love. As he rebuilds himself, life seems to favor him this time around, but he learns that there are some sorrows the universe intends us to weather regardless of time.
The author has a gritty way of writing. The dialog feels real, endearing, and sometimes heartbreaking. The book will keep your attention and you'll find yourself thinking about what your second chance might look like if the universe favored you.
We recommend this to anyone that loves time travel, romance, and a heavy dose of realism. This books maintains momentum, and although it is short, packs a punch. As an author myself, I appreciate the creativity that went into this. The author clearly put her heart into it.
This novella has an intriguing hook, and, as the description says, involves time travel. The writing is tight, and the descriptions are especially well done. It involves a lottery ticket, a beloved wife in a coma, and a desire for a second chance at love.
The best parts for me were the little details, the depictions of the often gritty world the POV character travels through. Without spoiling anything, there are scenes of happiness and harmony, and scenes of the opposite. I found the darker scenes more compelling, the main character’s confusion and struggles with the nature of his reality.
The happier scenes were a bit too sweet for my taste at times, and lacked some of the force of the darker ones. But that may just be my preference.
Overall it was a fast-paced and enjoyable read, and I would definitely try another of her books.
I very much enjoyed this quite unexpected story. What I liked about it most was the poetic way in which the author writes. The love scenes are particularly so and enchanting for that. You can imagine a couple so in love and it is so beautifully described that you feel the depth of their emotion. There is something of a supernatural element which was the unexpected part and I wondered how it would end, but I won't spoil it by hinting at it. A great introduction to the author's many works and I shall be returning in the future for another go. An eloquent and skilled writer who leads you gently and not so gently through the story which may well contain some twists. Thoroughly recommended.
We often think of what could be, and John experiences just that. Without knowing how or why, he steps back in time and re-meets his wife Stefania. A girl whose personality leaps right off the page and you can understand why John loves her so much. He uses his future knowledge to give them a better future than the original path, but there is always consequences. A sweet tale with enjoyable characters. If you like time-travel with your romance this ones a must read for you.
A quick and exciting read, and yet another fantastic piece by Barb. The story starts out slower as it gives background into the tragic beginning, but quickly shifts into a fast-paced story about a man willing to do what it takes to change his reality. The convenient store scene threw me for a loop (inserts wide-eye emoji here). The raw emotion spilled on the pages keeps you engaged until the very end. A truly enjoyable read and can thoroughly recommend.
I always love reading Barbara's books, and she did it again with Windfall. A gripping story around love, saving a loved one, and time travel.
I was sad at the beginning when I read about the MCs wife. I won't give any spoilers, but read it and find out what happens. It is a whirlwind time traveling book that you should read.
Windfall mixes time travel and romance together in a story that put me on edge (not something I expected!) in regards to story progression and how things develop! Makes you appreciate the time you have with those you love all the more! Great read!
This book does an excellent job of dragging a reader in. A story filled with heart, imagination and believable situations, especially for a time travel story.
