Fastpaced

Interesting take on EMP and terrorists, plausible. But maybe a little too busy? One incident after another without time to catch a breath. Simply too many incidents for most who survived to have actually survived.

There were a lot of editing errors in this book and I mean quite a lot. Punctuation, word usage-ambilocal vs umbilical, Ben becoming Jim then Ben again. Some of this should have been caught by a cursory proofread. The premise of an EMP and a concurrent attack by terrorist is fine, if not fairly standard in the genre, but to pinpoint a small city like Asheville instead of a much larger set of cities seems odd. That is a lot of resource to put there and it seems infeasible that the enemy has so many people that they can sprinkle them around this way. The ne'er-do-well-locals is also a standard element. I can't really fathom people who would abandon two young boys left in their care just because the kids wanted to wait for their father. The Riker family is on the run, just ahead of an armed group of terrorists, fleeing a dangerous fire and Liz picks that time to chide Ben over the fact that he refinanced their home without telling her? Way to pick your battles, lady. I doubt I will continue with this series as the editing errors alone are too distracting and I was not able to become invested in the characters.

This is another great read in the author’s EMP Survival in a Powerless World series of books and this one follows the family of Ben Riker, a fireman, living just outside the city of Ashville, in a small mountain town of Bear Ridge. Just after dropping his two young sons off at a sleepover with friends in Ashville, an EMP strike hits, stranding Ben near home and with the knowledge of what has happened, quickly tells his wife to get things ready for the family, as he hikes it back to the city for his boys. His neighbour and colleague Kurt, asks to join him and he reluctantly allows him to come along. He and his wife have a set plan in place for emergencies and the main rule is their family comes first, no matter what happens around them. Something that is harder to stick to than appreciated.

The journey into Ashville is not an easy one and a number of explosions are heard as they get closer to the city. If seems someone is targeting vital utilities and there is lots of shooting. It seems this was no accidently power outage nor just an EMP strike. There are groups of men killing people in the streets and Kurt gets injured by a sniper. Ben can’t carry him all the way back home, especially once he manages to get his kids, so the only option is to take him to their fire station and leave him with his captain for medical aid. Continuing on for his boys, through city streets filling with bodies and burning buildings, gets more and more dangerous, the closer he gets. His boys have been trained to stay where they are if something strange happens and that he will always come and get them, wherever they may be.

At the same time, back on Ben’s street of only four homes, one of their other neighbours is trying to get their daughter Nancy to come back to the house, from the remaining neighbours home, where her boyfriend Gray lives. His parents and uncle are not exactly what you might consider good company or examples for your daughter. The Percy family is known for its troublesome past and possible drug dealing present. But Nancy is a typical teenager who doesn’t get on well with her mother Margaret and has been given everything she wants from her father Harry. Harry went to fetch her and didn’t return, leaving Margaret to go and ask for Liz Riker’s assistance. Liz is looking after Kurt’s heavily pregnant wife, while he’s off helping Ben. They go to the Percy’s home, but matters escalate and cause severe difficulties for the Riker’s plans and the chances of everyone making it in one piece.

Some have already started to try and take advantage of the chaos happening in the streets, but the ones causing all the chaos have more matters to take care of and a far deadlier plot is about to unravel. Ben may reach his boys, but the journey home will be dangerous and much harder than Ben could ever plan for, with out of control fires decimating everything in their path. Another different look at the EMP strike storyline, with the spoilt teenage daughter of one rich neighbour, a criminal and drug dealing family getting drunk as usual and with more firepower than they should ever need, a heavily pregnant wife of his, armed groups with their own agenda and a city on fire, quickly spreading to their neighbourhood.

What will happen next is a complex tale of interlocking situations, brought about from danger and the evil of mankind towards each other. It is not the end of this story, as there is more that can follow on from where it was left at, so I would presume there is another part to this book, yet to come. I hope so anyway, as there is so much more to be finalised in the characters individual storylines and what may become of their future. I have loved all the books I have read by this author, and this one was no different. It may cover the same sort of topic area as many other books and authors, but it is told in a fresh and captivating manner, which kept my interest the whole way through. I can’t wait to read more from this author! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.

Tense and truly believable

The novel is well paced. The characters are believable and well drawn. The story held my interest.
The plot was well and clearly structured. I liked the use of flash back and although written as an assemblage of scenes the overall picture was more than plausible.
The hero is a quite ordinary person who more than anything is doing the thing they were trained for and the thing that matters most.
The characters work well together. They are described in just the right amount of detail.
The plot unfolds through the action and as I say the whole narrative is perfectly paced.
I think there is a sequel and I am determined to find it next time I am on Kindle.

Substance

It's refreshing to read a post emp novel that doesn't feel like the rest of them. Yes, there are the "good" guys and the "bad" guys, but this is much more substantial. While the common themes are touched on, I'm glad not a lot of time is spent describing the typical shock when the electricity doesn't come back on, and it doesn't take half a book to figure out it was an emp. Some of these are actual, well-informed people who have thought ahead and prepared instead of the stereotypical doomsday prepper types. Yes, people die, but it's well done and for a bigger purpose. I also enjoyed not reading every detail about the camping life, boiling water, cooking over a fire, digging a latrine, hunting food, etc. Can't wait to read the next one!

Hardhitting!

This was an excellent example of what it would be like if something like this happened. Only some of the military installations have protection against an EMP and that is primarily in the missile defense arena. Everything else electronic that was unprotected would be fried. I shudder to think what it would be like. I don't personally know any preppers. I do know some guys that have guns and ammunition but I doubt that they are as prepared as Ben. Pray that this never happens.

James Hunt is at the top of his craft with this story. Ben Riker and his wife Liz are set for a quiet evening to themselves with their 2 sons spending the night in the next town at a friend's sleepover, when the power goes off from an EMP. As a firefighter and paramedic as well as being a prepper, he realizes that things are going to get dangerous fast and needs to get to their sons to bring them back home. As he faces a brutal trip to retrieve the boys, Liz faces other challenges. Life has changed for good and they must do all they can to survive.

I don't look.at punctuation or mistakes some editor didn't catch. I look at the story. Unfortunately this was the same old story in an emp, a fireman this time around. It wasn't that I didn't like the book. The story was readable. It is like every author in this type a book remains the same. Nothing new was in this book. You could have made it with a co vid 19 theme. I guess just not.my taste. Give me Any Cross or Stephen King. Books with a bit of meat in the bon e. I'm sorry I couldn't give it a better review.

BETTER THAN A MOVIE!

I knew from reading reviews of James Hunt's novels that I would like this series. I LOVED this . book! What a great beginning. I found it realistic, easy to follow, his characters true to their form. The anticipation, and, challenges, the feelings, thoughts, joys, sorrows, and determination and grit of the human spirit speaks volumes to the reader's psych. I highly recommend this author's series and am looking forward to digging in with the second book!

A must-read for anyone who loves an apocalyptic event.

Keeps you going from page 1. This is an excellent book series about an EMP disaster with the fall up of terrorists who want to destroy everything our country has worked for. Families bind together to try and not only survive but to overcome the new lifestyles brought on by the attacks. The characters are brought to life quickly, and each page brings you to the point where you must know more. I can't wait for the next chapter in these amazing people's lives.

Love Conquers All

I very much enjoyed this story of survival and the power of love. Ben is a firefighter who will do anything for his family. As they, and their friends and neighbors, are thrown into an apocalyptic future, he fights against odds that are stacked against them. The writing is detailed and characters are believable. You want them to win… or lose. I would have liked more detailed editing, as there are many spelling errors that could have easily been fixed with spell check. But, I am looking forward to reading about what happens next to Ben and his community.

Fascinating

Story moves right along never s!owing down. Firemen, their wives and children and neighbors, some good, some out for themselves. But what caused everything, cars, phones, electronics, electric to go out? And why are there men in black out shooting randomly at everyone, blowing things up, starting fires? Great job. Now I can get some sleep before moving on to Book 2. Thank you.

Just ends...

Was deeply involved in the story and reading way past bedtime to find out what happened to the characters..and it ended..with a link to continue by purchasing the next 17 installments for $80+...looks like the "next" installment is about different characters, so I don't know if I'll purchase it or not yet.. but I do like the story so far!

Hard to put down

I thought this book makes you think about what could happen. This is the year 2020 and we are already going through a lot of stuff because we have this has virus that is going around. But that doesn't compare to the way life would be without the computers and all they offer

This book kept my attention from the time I started until I finished it. It was exciting, and made me feel several different emotions, and had enough detail to envision yourself being there watching every event take place. I would recommend this book to those who like exciting and breath holding action.

EMP Shelter In Place: EMP Survival in a powerless world (EMP Apocalyptic Survival Book 1)

This book was an eye opener to me. Just thinking about the possibility of an attack on our democracy in this country is mind blowing. Especially coming from within by home-grown terrorist. Wow!

EMP Survival

The story was gripping, suspenseful and held my attention. The thing that bothered me a lot was the countless misspellings, grammatical and punctuation errors. Having an excellent proof reader will show the reader that the author is professional and cares about not only what he is writing but how it is written. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Wow !! This is a great book.

This book is addictive and I rushed through my chores just so I could continue turning pages at a breakdown pace. The action scenes were thrilling and I never knew what Ben was going to face to protect his family. A fantastic book and I can't wait to start book 2.

Always learning!

Being a survivor is more a state of mind than wearing camouflage and living in a bunker(can’t hurt though)! I ask that you give James Hunt a try. All of his stories are consistently accurate and entertaining. Gee, you might learn something valuable to. God Bless America

Gruesome

This is a gory story. Well written and well thought out. It isn’t my style of literature, but I will continue to read the series. It makes you think “what if”. I like the characters. I like their courage and determination. Ben is truly a good man and I hope he continues to be I following books.

Sorry. this is a pretty good story, but….

When you write something you expect others to actually buy, you owe it to them to at least have a real editor/proofreader read your manuscript.
I would have been inclined to give this story 4 stars. However, typos, in general, lost you one star and spelling umbilical as “ambilocal” was simply unforgiveable. Sorry.

Pretty good

Needs thorough editing. But female characters are pretty well developed. Main character is too much of a superman to be believed. Never eats, drinks, or gets his hurts tended to. Be more realistic if they spent some time figuring out what to do for food and water, medical supplies. Not grounded in physical reality.

Looking forward to the rest of the series

Fast paced and straight up into the problem of the EMP. He wasted no time getting into the tale. I live in an area just like Ashville, North Carolina, and I can truly see how things happened. A tale of love, hate, and survival. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Scary

Started reading because it happened in an area in my State but the realistic scenario made the story very believable. Hope there is another to follow the survivors while they try to live among terriorists and friends.
