“His lips twitched at my defiance. He moved his face even nearer to mine, our lips inches apart.
"You feel that?" he nearly whispered, his voice low and intent. "You feel that rage inside? Burning hot in the pit of your stomach?"
Confused, I hesitantly nodded. What was he doing?
"That's what's going to keep you alive, " he said. "Hold on to it. Fear will only sign your death warrant. Stay mad, princess.”

“ I wondered who was the real Kade? He seemed an enigma that I couldn’t figure out. I couldn’t predict his mood or his words.

“Don’t try to rescue me, Kathleen,” he said flatly, a bitter smile curving his lips. “I’m beyond saving.” His face and voice were both as cold and remote as the arctic.”

“You know, if I didn’t know what a shit load of trouble you are,” he drawled lazily, “I might be persuaded to get the wrong idea.” His hand dropped down my back as he spoke, sliding over the thin satin fabric of the panties I wore.”

“I was shaking now, the force of his rage both scaring me and making my heart break inside my chest. Tears spilled unchecked down my cheeks, but I didn’t dare blink.”

“I was suddenly struck by the disparity of our appearance. Blane, dressed impeccably in a tuxedo that I could tell had been hand tailored. Then myself, looking like a sleazy tart in my barely-there outfit, my hair disheveled and my boots old enough to show their age. I wasn’t in Blane’s league and never had been.”

“Kade’s face was inscrutable as he looked at me, his eyes the most beautiful blue. Combined with the wickedly arched brows that matched his nearly black hair curling slightly over the collar “of the shirt, he could have been a fallen angel, he was so lovely.”

“I have told you you’re a shit load of trouble, right"

“Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Bet you don’t see me,
But I can see you.”
“You even look like a princess,” he mused. “White gown, blonde hair tumbling over your shoulders, blue eyes so wide and innocent. All you need is a knight in shining armor to come to your rescue.”

“Yes, ironic, isn’t it. I pushed him on you, and now I may pay the price.”

“Kade and I had grown closer over the past week, that much was true, but I knew nothing could happen between us. I refused to become a wedge between Blane and Kade.
The sexual attraction between Kade and me couldn’t be denied - I wasn’t stupid - but if my relationship with Blane had taught me anything, it was how very vulnerable making love with a man had made me.”

“Walking to the window, I peered outside. I watched as snow fell softly from the sky, giving the scene a storybook feel. Lights from other houses twinkled in the night.”

I'm absolutely in love with this series!

It's never quite clear to me where Kathleen's determination is coming from. Bravery combines with naivete to produce foolhardiness as she wades into one frightenting situation after another... Once she's gotten herself into danger, her fear is quite genuine...but she doesn't seem to learn from it for the next time. Some reviewers have called her TSTL (too stupid to live), but I'd say she's quite intelligent, just very impetuous and naive, terrible at reading people's intentions, and propelled by powerful emotions when it comes to those two alpha males: Blane Kirk, now head of his prestigious law firm, and his younger half-brother Kade Dennon, who left the FBI to become an assassin for hire.
