Aileen Travers #5

Twilight's Herald

Rate this book
Aileen Travers thought she had it all figured out. Part private investigator, part fixer to the supernatural community, she was slowly building a reputation as the go-to vampire in Columbus. If you had a supernatural problem and nowhere to turn, she was the girl for you. The best part—no one had tried to kill her in weeks.

Aileen’s peaceful existence comes crashing down around her when an unwilling visit to the police station results in her picking up a stalker—or two. Now, Aileen is dodging suspicious looking portals while evading kidnapping attempts.

Looks like Aileen has a new client. Herself.

This series just gets better with each book. I'm completely enamored with all these characters, not just the main characters, but all of them.

With each book, we learn more about Aileen. I love that there is so much to her character, and I like how the author is giving it to us a piece at time. It makes me anxious to get to the finale, but it also makes me want this series to never end.

Even though it took a few books for the romance to build up, it's also one of the reasons I'm enthralled. Liam was well worth the wait with how he is with Aileen. That's another section that reveals a piece at at time.

While Aileen is the star of the series, all the side characters bring so much to the overall series as a whole. I would love to see quite a few of them get their own books. So many have made their presence mean more than just side characters.

Each book has a happy-for-now ending but I would highly recommend starting with book one. Like I said, you learn pieces to the puzzle with each book. If you don't read in order, some things won't have the impact they should. It's safe to say I highly recommend it.

I have to admit, if this book doesn’t have the story this good, I wouldn’t continue this series after book #1. 🥴.

Aileen stubbornness is unbearable to read and would continue until few chapters before this book ended and I still didn’t get her at all, it made her looks like an idiot. Even crazy Tate from Dragon Ridden feels much better than Aileen, and Tate is a crazy suicidal girl! 😳😂. Aileen little bit improved in those few last chapters thought and I have hope she will much better in the next book, fingers crossed 😬.

But Ms White is a fantastic story teller, I couldn’t stop reading once I’ve got pulled in its world.
There is a dramatic change after book #3, the PNR books became a fantasy which I love 😘. And I couldn’t stop reading after that

However you can read book #1 to #3 as a stand alone, perhaps that’s why I didn’t care to continue reading book #2 earlier after I’ve got so annoyed by Aileen 😕.

This series hasn’t finished yet, but we still haven’t a clue when the next one will publish.
I’m not complaining much thought, the HFN is good enough and that end? Is so exciting for the next book 😍.

❤️❤️❤️

I’m a pretty big T. A. White fan, so of course I was ridiculously excited to hop back into the Aileen Travers series. The ending of Dawn’s Envoy seemed to mark a turn in the series to me, and I was pleased to see that born out in this book. This is the fifth book in the series and absolutely cannot be read as a standalone.

“Nothing good ever comes of suppressing ourselves. It’s the first rule any spook learns,” Jerry observed. “If I were you, I would question why the person you call captain pushed you in that direction.”

After four books of fighting to remain human and in control of her life, Aileen’s finally come to terms with her life. She’s got a job she likes, friends in the paranormal community that she’d trust with her back, and something that sort of resembles a relationship with Liam. Aileen has established herself as a sort of private investigator for the paranormal community, and now Connor’s decided that he wants to help her out. Oh, and mysterious shadow beings keep popping up and trying to kidnap her, not to mention that her old captain – the one who initially helped her out when she was turned into a vampire – is back in town. Is it a string of coincidences, or is there something more sinister at work?

“Not everything has to be a fight, A. There are good parts to being a vampire too,” Nathan said softly.
My smile was faint. “I’m beginning to see that.”

There’s a huge difference in tone between this book and the previous ones. The biggest change is that Aileen’s more at peace with being a vampire and all that entails, so there’s much less angsting over everything. While I was expecting this after the events of the last book and I’m overjoyed that Aileen’s finally accepting herself, I wish there had been a little more setup in between the “I hate Thomas and all vampires by extension” to “yeah, OK, they have a point.”

“Don’t let Aileen fool you. She appears grumpy but she’s happy you’re here.”
Flabbergasted disbelief filled me. In what world?
“I understand,” Connor replied.
My gaze swung toward him. He did?
I wish somebody would make me understand.”

It’s also no longer Aileen alone against the world. As the series has progressed, she’s collected more friends and allies, and now she’s got quite the support system, between Liam, Nathan, Caroline and – surprise – Connor. Connor was a complete unknown at the end of the last book, and for whatever reason he’s decided his best chance at acclimating to not-a-fae-deer life is tagging along with Aileen. This puts her in the hilarious position of, well, basically selling him on vampire life, but it also gives her more insight into the complicated relationship between Thomas, Liam and Connor. On a lighter note, I love Aileen and Caroline’s friendship so I’m always happy to see more of it, especially scenes that involve dancing to earworm kid tunes at a vampire night club. What can I say, I’m a sucker for characters being happy before being promptly kicked in the face by the nefarious baddies.

“Or are you going to keep pretending to be less than you are?”
“I’ve never pretended to be anything less than awesome. It’s everyone else who’s been slow to catch on.”

The final component to the change in tone is that while Aileen is still ridiculously underpowered, she’s coming into her own, and she’s certainly not going to let anyone treat her as lesser. She may not have brute power, but she has smarts, and that’s enough to get her through several extremely satisfying confrontations in the book. While her friends are more accepting of her kickassery – and therefore less likely to be overbearing protective numbskulls – her enemies still repeatedly underestimate her in terms of physical strength, magic, and general ability to MacGyver her way out of sticky situations. There’s more explanation about the source of Aileen’s magic which I found extremely interesting, and on Aileen’s heritage in general.

“I miss the days when you were afraid of me.”
I leaned over and nipped the tip of his ear. “That’s because you’re a weirdo with control issues.”

Aileen’s relationship with Liam is still developing, and while she’s not entirely sure whether it’s a good thing or not, she’s content waiting to see where it goes. She hasn’t had good luck with love – look at her abysmal family relationships – and it’s hard for her to believe that this thing with Liam won’t lead to more heartache down the line, especially given his tendency towards trying to steamroll her. Luckily, both Liam and Thomas seem to have finally clued in on the fact that ordering Aileen around is the best way to get her to do the exact opposite. So while things with Thomas aren’t great, they’re not awful – well, at least until he starts trying to manipulate her again.

“Sarcasm, again. Do you have any other forms of communication?” he asked.
I lifted a shoulder. “It’s my love language.”

I finished reading the fourth book with a lot of questions, and luckily we get a lot of answers in this book…. which, of course, lead to more questions. What are the repercussions of Aileen and Connor setting up a vampire house? Why are the hunters targeting Aileen? Will we get to see more adorable shadow doggy? Is Thomas really going to put on his vampire realtor hat? « Hide Spoiler While the author’s said there is going to be another Aileen book, there’s no tentative release date for it yet, so it looks like I’ll have to wait a bit to get my questions answered. Overall, this is another great entry in the series, and I will be anxiously awaiting more Aileen!

I received an advance review copy of this book from the author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Read the 5books in 2days. That's how addicting this was. Still berating myself what took me so long to start this. But then again, I didn't have to wait. At first, I wasn't a fan of Aileen. But she wormed her way through. Shea and Kira are still my favorites. Aileen comes third. 😊 So, when is the 6th book coming out?

So… this is the point where I begin to watch the pages turning, fearing the end of the book coming with utter dread - all while reading with avid delight. The reason? I’m caught up with the series and now must wait for the next book to publish. *sigh* It’s the conundrum of a super series.

As for this particular story - it is everything the previous books are and more. The four stars rather than five is just because I’m not much of a fan of roaming through pocket realms with otherworldly creatures for long.

Series review

Admittedly, I have not been a fan of this series. I like some of the author's other work, so I stuck it out. Sadly, the installment was not an improvement. The root of my problem is that I don't like Aileen. She's whiney, lacks self control, and lashes out constantly like a child. She is surrounded by a bevy of men (yawn) who all decide she is amazing (why?) and isn't it just great that the toughest and baddest one decides she is special? To top it off, the males in her life decide they get to call the shots. At one point in this book she thanks one of them for letting her be herself. LETTING her...there is so much wrong with that. Being yourself isn't about permission from the men in your life. It's about permission from yourself. Seriously.

I won't disagree that Aileen isn't the brightest bulb; she takes forever to draw conclusions that are obvious, makes dumb mistakes because she won't think things through, and spends more time going gaga over Liam than anything else. This made the book slow, and I didn't feel there was much plot. The love scenes were irritating but that can be blamed on me not liking him or Aileen.

Aileen does grow up some, becoming more self aware. Sadly she doesn't gain much in the common sense department.

I'm not sure what it is about this series, but it just flopped for me. I would point readers to any of the author's other series for a better read.

Book 5! I finally made it!

Quick recap of Books 1-4: Aileen alternately finds herself kidnapped, blackmailed, stabbed, shot, bitten, sliced, poisoned, magically smacked around, and manipulated into losing her job, getting a boyfriend, making friends, finding a new job, getting over some baggage and accepting her life.

Now in Book 5, which doesn't appear to be the last book, she learns some secrets of her past that lead to some heartbreaking realizations in the present.

Lemme get this out of the way - somewhere in the time since the end of Book 4 and the beginning of Book 5 (which appears to be less then 3months?) Aileen did a dramatic heel turn over common sense.

Literally I spent Books 1-4 raging over her stubborn willful need to ignore common sense survival instincts. And yet in Book 5 she's comfortable enough to JOKE about how many dumb mistakes she made?

And part of this she explains is because she trusted the wrong guy. A friend she thought had her best interests at heart. The Captain.

We heard about him throughout the books as someone Aileen trusted implicitly, a friend and comrade who helped her after Thomas got bitey. Anyone with half a brain and knowledge of tropes knows the one where "when old friends show up, they gonna be bad news". Genre TV, from Battlestar Galactica to Victorious, loves it when old friends or family show up and fuck over the MC somehow. Every. Single. Time.

So it was with minimal surprise when the Captain turned out the same.

There was a lot going on in this book - the Scattered, Captain showing up, Connor becoming a partner, Kat's challenge, Pelt and very smaller things. It became a little overwhelming, especially near the end when I was like "uh but...that whole Hunters thing..." at the 89% mark.

Still I'm not dissatisfied, exactly, with how it all turned out. Aileen isn't biting her nose off any longer and made genuine progress. Here's to Book 6!

4.6 ish stars. It took awhile to like the series, but the last two books were much much better than the first two (in terms of the likability of the heroine). She's definitely grown as a person. I'm confused if this is the last book in the series. At the very least, a spin-off would be grand.

Wow! I can't believe how gifted an author T.A. White is. She manages to write fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fiction and every one of these series is outstanding. The one thing they all have in common is a strong female lead although each has a distinct voice. I love all of them but Aileen is in the top two for me. And Herald is the best yet in Aileen's story. She seems to have fully come into her own in this book.

I was so excited for this one being released that I got a pint of Graeter's Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice cream in celebration. I had never heard of this ice cream prior to reading this series but there was so much description lavished on it in earlier entries in this series that I had to try it when I found out my local grocery store carried it. And let me tell you- it is everything Aileen says it is and more. That is the thing with these books, they are so descriptive, so well-crafted and detailed that I feel I am there and since I can't be in Cincinnati I decided to bring a bit to me.

Unfortunately, Aileen now realizes eating ice cream is bad for her (and after finishing the whole pint so do I) as is as it weakens her so there was no Graeter's for her this time around. But this is great progress as she has finally come to accept who she is and is a much more compelling character for this. She is no longer angry about/resentful of becoming a vampire. By accepting who she is now, she seems stronger, healthier and dare I say it, happier. At the same time, she is not a push over and stands up for herself more effectively in this book.

Herald was a deeply satisfying read for me as it answered so many questions that earlier books in the series. While there is a ton of adventure- really a ton so much happened in this book you have to read it to see-what I liked best about it was that it really was about relationships and a deepened understanding of the motives driving the characters who are in Aileen's inner circle. Yes, she is somewhat estranged from her mother (who it turns out is a rather bigoted person) but the breach between her and her sister is healing as they both realize their mother- and need for her approval- has hurt them both in different ways. Not everyone gets a loving family but that doesn't mean they can never love or be loved and it was very satisfying to watch Aileen's relationship deepen with those of her vampire family. We learn more about Liam, Thomas and Connor and how they relate to each other. I particularly liked Connor's interactions with Aileen in this book as Aileen helps Connor adapt to this world and Connor protects her like a big brother. We learn who Aileen's father is and meet him (and bonus her grandfather! and bonus bonus Alches the shadow dog!!)

I really hope there are more Aileen books in the future as I very much want to spend more time with all these characters. I hope with the introduction of the vampire hunters in this book that this is a hint that there is at least one or two more books in this series since these hunters seem like real creeps who we need to see Aileen defeat. I also am eager to see Aileen get to know her father, Brin/Bryan, more. And more Alches please!

I did receive an ARC copy of this book for an honest review but also bought a copy when it was officially released as I wanted to have the final edition and also want to support this author so she will keep writing.

I love T.A. White's books! This series and The Broken Lands series are two of my favorites!
Unlike the other books of hers, when I started reading the Aileen Travers series, I wasn't too fond of the protagonist. But, at this point I love her so much! Goes to show how much development her character has undergone through the course of five books!

Aileen has finally begun to accept the life that she has now! A vampire and a private investigator, she's friends with many important members in the paranormal community(though she wouldn't call it 'friends' 😂) and she also has a powerful vampire lover!

Just when things are beginning to settle down, Connor - the vampire who she helped rescue from the fae in the previous book - decides to show up when she's working on a case and helps her out. She decides to take him on as a co-worker for a while when some shadow beings threaten her.
And to add on to her plate of existing problems, her old captain (the one who got her the job in Hermes after she was turned into a vampire) calls her up to meet! After making peace with her new life and learning more about the vampire community, Aileen now knows that the captain might not have had her best interests in his heart when he pulled some strings to get her the messenger job and hid her from the vampires.

We finally get to learn more about Aileen's background and her father's family in this one! Kinda had a feeling that we were building up to something big after the events of the last book, so I'm quite pleased that many of our questions were answered!

I also loved that her relationship with her sire, Thomas is finally on the mend. The change in Aileen has been my favorite part of the book!
Her and Liam's relationship was also another beautiful part! After the slow build-up over the course of the previous four books, their relationship has finally solidified in this one! I loved seeing them trust each other and work together!

The last few chapters were fast-paced and though the ending was satisfactory, it also left me with more questions! I hope we get book 6 soon so that we can find out more about Aileen, her father and the results of her now being a part of a separate House with Connor! Can't wait!

My dudes, this is so bad. This series started as some fan fic blend of Vampire Diaries, True Blood, and Anita Blake. Now we're at fairy princesses. And this entire book is info dumping amidst people being terrible.

I actually bought and returned the next book in the series, and won't be continuing.

The second half of the book, in fae land, deserve more than 2 stars, but the first half is very boring, stuffed with unnecessary repetition of things read in previous volumes.
In the second half of the book, the story progresses rapidly, and makes you want to know more.

I really love how I can envision all of T.A. Whites books like a movie in my head. I always get sucked in and cant wait until the next book, I never want to put them down. The humor, action and suspense always keep me on the edge of my seat I cant get enough. I've read this series like a hundred times, one of the best series I've read in my little lifetime. (I'm rereading due to the 7th book coming out) And decided to leave some reviews! (Ie I write while I read or try to)

I love the start of the book, especially how in this book Aileen has gained a brother in Connor. I also love that Inara plays a substitute role as both her mother and an older sibling. I feel like the loss of her family support, plays a huge role in her gaining a new family and multple friends (especially since she kept repeating that she was loner in the beginning of the series). Which is crazy because at the beginning of the series Aileen was lonely and had no friends or family because the captain purposely isolated her from both her family/friends and the possibility of joining a vampire clan. But now she has gained a numerous amount of support from the supernatural community from Jerry who's like a surrogate father. To Inara and Lowan who are like her older wiser siblings who keep her from getting into trouble. Her reconnection to Catherine as her best friend in the Supe Community, as well as the gaining of a new best friend in Nathan who also cosplays as an annoying brother. She also has a surrogate father in Thomas even though she does not consider him one, though they fight like it.

Her BIG BAD boyfriend Liam who has his enforcers to protect her as well. It's crazy how far she has come in gaining a community. In the previous book I knew that the fae would be involved in potentially either kidnapping her or trying to murder her. But I really loved how this book played out and how she's not only found her biological father but also other supernatural relatives as well. I look forward to her getting a relationship with both her aunt Callie and her uncle Don.

I didn't get as much headache from this book like I got the others. (BY HEADACHE, I MEAN FIGHTING THE CHARACTERS IN MY MIND THAT I DO NOT LIKE) I didn't want to fight anyone in my mind, THIS TIME. I just love that I could sit back and read this book and it played out like a movie in my head. In this book it really shows how special Aileen is and no matter what she does or what occurs she always comes out on top. Plus she's always surrounded by powerful beings like Thomas, Jerry, Liam, Inara, Cadell, Arlen and her new supernatural family. I really look forward to seeing her relationship with her grandfather grow as well. Plus more interactions with her biological father.

WAIT! OK! I lied, I did have a part where I wanted to start swinging, which was on the character Pelt. I do not like the fact that she went after Aileen just because she was different. Like she was more than willing to kill someone she did not, know because of the direction of other people or specifically hunters. I look forward to Aileen's introduction to the hunters in book 5.

This book seem to be a lot more nostalgic to me especially in the description of both Aileen and Connor acting so much like siblings. And being the missing pieces to each other's bond to Thomas. I also love how there are so many people looking out for Eileen like the pixies, Dahlia, the vampires, the flock. Along with being a magic breaker Aileen seems to be a key player in allowing the supernatural community to come together in peace rather than fight and be enemies. I can't wait to see what else she does in book 6 and 7. I love her character, and that she has found her place in both the vampire community in and her personal life as a newfound supernatural(even though she already one unknowingly). I know I'm ranting but I LOVE LOVE the way that Liam expresses his love for her in both his actions and emotions. (2nd fav couple in T.A. White series)

I was also super excited to learn that Aileen had a lot more control over her abilities. With the introduction of her grandfather and her favorite relatives the scattered she is able to see/hear and feel a lot more of her magical abilities and I can't wait to see what she does next. OH AND SHE HAS A DOG WHICH IS FUNNY WITH IN ITSELF BECAUSE SHE KEEPS GAINING FRIENDS THAT SHE SAYS SHE DOES NOT WANT LOL. PLUS ANTON I low-key forgot about him I look forward to this friendship as well! Im glad he got over his jealousy and I love how Nathan, Anton and Conner were fighting over a nonexistent handshake with her as well!

AND HOW CAN I FORGET AILEEN IS A PRINCESS!!!! WHAT THE HECK!!!! HER PARENTS HAVE SOME SERIOUS EXPLAINING TO DO BECAUSE HER MOM SEEMS TO KNOW SOMETHING AND IF CAROLINE'S MOM DID. I'M MORE THAN WILLING TO BET AILEEN’S MOM KNOWS SOMETHING TOO!

“Once you’re dead, I’ll have passed the invitation process. Then I’ll of after the rest of our friends“ —— it seems that Aileen is also mixed up in something with the vampires again. Who wants to bet that it has something to do with THOMAS :(

- How powerful is Aileen and why would it draw more powerful being besides her being a magic breaker and it would seem creator?
- Why didn’t Jerry warn Aileen when he knew what kind of person she was about Travis?

The best one yet!!! I enjoyed this so much, read it so quickly because I was just totally hooked. Tobey just has this amazing way of writing that sucks me in and has me flying through the pages!! Rereading this never gets dull or repetitive, the romance draws you right in and the plot is interesting and keeps evolving.

I really loved the plot of this instalment; the fae, the scattered, the other realms and all the history !! The worldbuilding is great. And finally we discover some of the secrets of Aileen’s history and heritage, loved the twist and so ready to see where we go with her new family next!

Aileen and Liam have come so far and their relationship is everything; they have amazing chemistry and they’re funny, steamy, magnetic and soft at all the right times. There was so much emotion between them in this book, perfect!

Connor is totally my new favourite, he’s so intriguing and funny without trying. But he also has such heart and I loved seeing him come out of this shell more and more with Aileen.

The enforcers are so good! The balance of hilarious moments, their loyalty and fierceness makes them such loveable characters. And that dodgeball scene omg.

I will continue to talk about TA White and her books until she has the recognition she deserves! This series is fantastic and it’s not even my favourite of hers. So many choices and wonderful worlds to fall in love with !!!

As usual with this author I really enjoyed this book, I especially liked seeing more of Connor. He is a really fun character and I really wish we could have seen more of him. I wanted the formation of their house to have a larger impact on things, we barely get to see any changes from the house formation and I think it would have been really interesting to see Aileen use the rules of being a house (whatever they are) to her advantage. I also think it would be fun to see Aileen do more of her PI sleuthing type work, but we didn't really get any of that in this book. This book mostly focuses on Aileen's father and the Scattered, which was interesting but felt a little "side-questy" and the series as a whole has lost an identifiable over-arching plot. Where is all of this going? Aileen isn't working towards anything concrete besides surviving. While things ended semi-resolved and there is no cliff-hanger, there is the feeling of things being unfinished. I will for sure read the next book whenever it comes out, but I am less excited about the series as a whole now.

This was better. All the aggravating issues from the previous books seem to be resolved -- though, unfortunately, I'm getting annoyed now by the fact that Aileen just keeps becoming more powerful and more MarySue-like.
Also, I take an issue when authors use the "(adjective) goodness" phrase: sugary goodness, sinful goodness, spicy goodness... or in the case of this book: "beery goodness"
I. fucking. hate. that.
And I know that's petty of me, and I know I should know better with this being a romance and all but I can't help it. It's so lazy. And it sounds dumb. Like, really dumb.
And as much as I want to keep railing against how much I hate that phrase, I think I'll curb it for now.

I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.

It has been awhile since I read the previous books, and I wondered if I would have trouble reading this book. The author did a good job of explaining or recapping, so I did not have any problem following it. I enjoyed reading about Aileen’s heritage and the growing sibling relationship with Connor. Where I struggled was her relationship with Liam. I felt like Aileen was in love with the idea that someone could love her deeply more than Liam himself.

Ahhh... that was such a good book. Finally, Aileen's past is revealed in this one. Welp, I kinda guessed it, the race that is. But man, T.A. White knows to write.

The only critic I could give is the pacing of the plot. It meandered a bit in the beginning. But other than that, great read!

P.s. I really love the titles of this series. They actually made sense to each book and is not a generic fantastical title.

I really enjoy this series and this installment was really good. I liked watching Aileen with Connor and their growing relationship. The Fae storyline was intriguing and kept me guessing throughout. Of course Liam is as delightful as always and his dynamic with Aileen is just perfect. They’ve both learned to compromise in this one and it was nice to see the push and pull between them.

I can’t wait for the next one!

Admittedly, I am not a big fan of the series.
T.A. White is a bit of a hit and miss with me anyway. I dislike some of her female characters and in this category we certainly find Aileen. She's whiney, lacks self control and is too much of a pushover. Where I struggled was her relationship with men. Very repetitive, chauvinistic and simply boring.
Will not read again. And will probably not continue the series.
