The guide sets up a well structured and easy pattern which provides ideas and ways of following the text with a suitable group.I believe the key to enjoyable reading is to have access in a natural way to the language and meaning presented, otherwise the approach to a great work may be discouraging and frustrating.
The length of time between my first reading of Pilgrim's Progress (John Bunyan) was so long ago. I found Alan Vermilye's translation so much easier to read and comprehend. As a new Christian when I first read it, I took a lot for granted. I supposed that someday I would just know it all like Christian seemed to. Reading it this time, the character, Christian was almost pushy and judgmental. Not willing to give up on Christian (and Bunyan) quite yet, I researched John Bunyan's life and found that his faith was quite genuine and he was imprisoned for it a couple of times. Being a Puritan wasn't everyone's cup of tea in Bunyan's generation. On the other hand, I find the older I get, the more I need to fill up on God's Word instead of judging. Not quite willing to leave Bunyan and The Pilgrim's Progress, I did some more research and found Part 2, Christiana and Her Children. I discovered a refreshing story of Christian's family who rejected Christian when he chose to go on pilgrimage and how their hearts changed and followed behind him. I'm so blessed that I dug deeper!
To start, let me say that The Pilgrims Progress is a great book that has been recommended to me by many people over the years and is one of the most read books in history. That said, the original version is difficult to read……. very difficult. Honestly, I have never finished it. I have started it at least a dozen times……. but struggled greatly and finally gave up each time. A great book that you never finish loses a lot of it’s impact and is difficult to recommend.
All of that said, the revised version by Alan Vermilye is exactly what I needed to not only finish this great book but to gain an understanding of the power of its words and the reason that so many people read it multiple times and spend so much time studying it. Perhaps I will, at some point, go back and read the original all the way through, but for now I am grateful to have this new version to read, study, and discuss. If you have been struggling to get through the original version, or if you have been intimidated enough that you just never even started, pick up a copy of this latest version. You will not regret it. I fell comfortable enough to say that you will be blessed by it and will share it with others. The story flows very nicely and you will be able to gain enough understanding of the topics that it will maintain your interest and will most likely entice you to go back and reread it at some point in the near future.
I would also recommend that you acquire the companion Study Guide along with the book as it has some excellent summary resources at the beginning (i.e. a summary of the book, the characters, and the places) These are all very helpful as foundation and reference points while reading through the book as well as while doing some broader study. The questions that go with each chapter will provide you with an opportunity to think through what you have read and present some excellent topics for discussion with fellow travelers on the faith journey!
In summary: Buy it! Read it! Share it with others and discuss it with them! It is timeless and I promise that you will find pertinent lessons for whatever stage of you find yourself on in your faith journey. Thank you Alan Vermilye for the amount of effort that you undoubtedly put into this work. Also, thank you for being brave enough to engage in such an endeavor. I am certain it was intimidating and challenging. I am also certain that the readers of this work will be better off for having read it! Peace!
This study that accompanies The Pilgrim's Progress is inciteful and helpful. It gives the readers of Pilgrim's Progress a Biblical guide with which to read and study the book. The Bible verses chosen were applicable and presented in different ways so all types of study styles can learn from this centuries old story that never ages.
While the author's conservative politics occasionally bleed into the text, I would still recommend this guide to anyone reading the book. It helps you to focus on what the original author was trying to impart and gain the most from your reading of the original text.
Very helpful guide. Although I didn't always agree with his interpretations, the guide provides thought-provoking questions and helpful explanations. I got a lot more out of Pilgrim's Progress thanks to this!
I give this study guide all the stars. This guide was why it took my group 10 months to finish Pilgrim's Progress, which is not that long. The questions were such good discussion starters, and there were so many biblical passages he referenced to link to the text.
Highly recommended. And I picked up his study guide for the Screwtape Letters too.
