We’re on the run. Forced to abandon our home to escape an enemy who always seems one step ahead. The Steel Demons lost a brother, and Reaper is determined not to lose anyone else.
Tensions are high while the club wanders the desert in search of a new home. A prospect makes lofty demands. A husband’s jealousy hits a boiling point. But pleasant surprises are also among us.
Shadow is emerging from his shell, and the man shining through the scarred exterior is one I’m helpless to resist. My friendly crush has roared into a passionate flame. One that my men have noticed too.
When an unexpected rescue mission goes awry, my worst fear is not being able to save him.
I can’t lose Shadow before we’ve had a chance to begin. I won’t let him slip away without knowing what love feels like.
I’ve always been resourceful, never helpless. But to save him, I’ll have to pray to every god that listens.
Sons of Anarchy meets The Handmaid's Tale in this dystopian reverse harem adventure! Helpless is the fifth book in the Steel Demons MC saga. This series is full of kindle-melting steam and dangerous men who take what they want. Proceed with caution if easily offended.
Helpless has a mix of everything that makes me love the Steel Demons series- some s*xy fun, some interfering but completely pettable gods, a burst of action, and the delicious development of another relationship for Mari. And can I just say that I unashamedly, unabashedly, (and insert third synonym for giving zero f**ks) play favorites, and this is the relationship arc I have been waiting for!!! Not that I didn't love the rest, but Shadow, well, look back at the first line of this review.
Before I wax eloquent about my favoritism, let's get to the goods on the others. One thing I think Ash is doing very well with this series is giving some balance. So far, each of the men whose relationship arc is spotlighted does get a sense of priority, BUT the others don't fall to the wayside. They remain important, they still have their own POVs, and they're lives keep moving because they're major players too. These babies don't get put in the corner just because it's someone else's turn to get some extra lovin'.
Reaper, Jandro, and Gunner are all finding purpose, though it looks different for each of them. Reaper has all the pressures of leading the MC in their quest for a new home but also the personal pressures of trying to reach his brother so he can learn more about what he'll need to prepare for. Gunner is finding his place and getting settled in this unconventional relationship, and I think that there are some leadership opportunities ahead for him in the next book (but it'd be a bit of spoilers to explain why). Jandro is still a lovable chicken-daddy (not something I ever thought I'd write), and with Shadow's relationship arc getting our spotlight, it's interesting to see his perspective on the budding relationship. As much as Shadow will be growing from his connection with Mari, I think Jandro stands to gain something from this arrangement too. I love the friendship between the two men and am really excited to see how Mari taking a new role in Shadow's life will change that.
And Shadow...Shadow, Shadow, Shadow. I just can't. You know that feeling when you see an adorable kitten? Where your heart just wants to squeal and squish it and keep it safe and love it forever? That's exactly what I felt. Underneath this scarred and supposedly broken man is a smart, observant, sweet, and both adorably fumbling and confident character that readers are just going to die for just a little bit more as they read Helpless.
In case you're unconvinced, just try to read this without your heart clenching and being hit with the insane urge to reach into your book and hug him:
"Everyone is always telling me I'm improving. I'm doing better. I've come so far. Which is nice, I guess. But all that implies that I'm still not good enough. I'm not there yet. I'm not normal yet. Like you said, I keep watching people to make sure I'm not being weird. I read psychology, history, all of that, to learn how normal people behave. I exhaust myself trying to remember everything, only to keep hearing the same things. 'You're doing better, Shadow. You've improved so much.' You're the first person to tell me that- that I'm already good enough."
I don't want to dig too far beyond that because all of you Shadow-lovers deserve to have all the same squeals, sighs, and swoons that I did. Let me just say, their relationship has so much further to go, but I think that you guys will be as excited as I am.
Overall, I'm still so happy and satisfied with this series. We're making our way closer and closer to a confrontation with Tash that I'm sure is to bring all the bloodshed and heartache that is going to make us want to pitch a fit and ugly cry, but we're still moving forward on all other developing fronts: the demons finding a new home, getting closer and learning more about their gods, and Mari's quad becoming a connected family. Ash does a great job of weaving these lines of plot together so that one moment or conflict or interaction checks the box on more than one of those fronts at a time. It's done very smoothly so that the reader is always staying in that headspace of being interested and trying to catch every detail. There's no filler or fluff, and that's something that I personally really enjoy.
I do have to say though, I am waiting with baited breath because in each of the books we get a refresher on the warning that something big is going to happen, and we're going to have to just clutch our kindles and hope that Mari & the guys (especially Shadow, hint hint, nudge nudge) make it through okay.
The Steel Demons MC, book 5, Helpless is phenomenal! This installment is as the others have been, told using multiple POVs. This is the best written MC series I've ever read. Why? Crystal Ash has a way with words, of course! Not to mention it is RH, dystopian, has paranormal aspects, and enough dark and dirty to satisfy any reader. There aren't, or at least haven't been so far, any cliffhangers that left me stressed out. It's been just enough to keep us guessing and tease us with more to come.
The RH aspect is slow burn until he's in and then explosive after... and the wait has been so worth it. The main male characters were introduced in the first book. Ash has a way of drawing you in with characters that are multidimensional.
I've been a fan of this series since book one, which I found via the RHR reader's group on good reads. Since then, I have become obsessed with these characters and their journey through their world. So obsessed I low key stalked Ash's reader group and finally got on her ARC team. This book does not disappoint or lose any of its momentum.
Shadow is the heart of this story for me just as much as Mari is. That's not to say all the guys who end up in the harem aren't wonderful, because they are perfect. Each guy adds something to their group and to the MC. Each is completely different.
In this book, we find the club is set to move to a new place which will pose new challenges and new opportunities.
I have to say this has been my favorite book so far though because of all the build up to the addition of a certain someone who has been there since day one.
Freya speaks to Mari and confirms something I believed early on. Those animals are amazing. Hades, Horus, Freya. I just adore them and their advice.
If you are a fan of any of the following, I suggest reading this series - RH, alpha male sexy studmuffins, dystopian, paranormal, MC life, or genre bending books. Just start at the beginning. You will be glad you did. It's absolutely phenomenal... and there's more to come. War is on the horizon, and predictions have been made. I'm so ready for whatever happens next.
It's definitely no joke how addicting this series is!
It's funny that I kept ignoring this series everytime it was recommended to me only because it's just too long..I mean so far there's 7 published books with 2 more coming up this year! I want to leave a review once I'm done with this series, which will probably only happen after the author releases the final book and that could be the end of this year or the next year if there's a 10th book!
I usually hate long series and I get super annoyed when there's more than 3 books in a series..but this one..it's somehow grabbed my attention! Post apocalyptic world + MC + Supernatural elements + believable RH (some/ most RHs have everyone easily 'accepting' their unconventional relationship which you don't find here) + Female lead who's not just a beautiful background piece of furniture (Mariposa, the female lead, has an actual role, other than being attractive..she's a pretty good "medic")..I mean..it can't get better than that huh?
4 dreamy Shadow Stars! Honestly, the plot is good and all the other guys in Mari's harem are good, but from day 1 I only had eyes for Shadow, for Shadow and Mari together, and for Shadow's story. I still only have eyes for him.❤
I really enjoyed this book. We have seen Shadow grow in a way I never thought possible and all thanks to Mariposa's softness and ways of confronting him and getting under his skin. We have also seen Mariposa's relationship with her other men take hold more and more each day and she has become a force to be reckoned with in the group's decision making.
I can’t believe I’m still so addicted to this series. I never stick with long series like this, I tend to lose interest after a couple books. Especially reverse harems, because they tend to be all smexy scenes. This series has perfect balance of action, sexiness and mystery to keep me going 👍 And Shadow. That’s it. I am so invested in his character and his growth 💙💙💙
Oh wow, what a good read this was. It was just enough of everything to make you gobble up each word and still make you hunger for more. So with that being said I'm off to read book 6... Oh boy!
3 stars... And that is despite the fact that this is Shadow’s book. I mean, I love Shadow! His and Mari’s interactions are adorable and emotional.
But I had a hard time keeping my interest for the rest of the story. I’m not invested in the move away from their home. I don’t care about the gods. And I’m kind of bored with Mari’s relationship with the three other men. Everything between them is settled and sugar-sweet.
I’ll probably still pick up the next installment though.
I can't believe how fantastic this book is. Crystal has upped the ante in every way this time. The world-building continues apace, the characters continue to grow, and the action ramps up exponentially. I could hardly draw breath while reading and I couldn't bring myself to put it down. The Demons are on the road, looking for a new home, and are following the advice of their newest recruits, the Sons of Odin. But looking for shelter in a new territory leads to a mission that has the potential to go badly wrong, and it does. One territory is definitely not like another, and neither is there any comparison between Governors. One Governor seems good and honourable, the other rivals the worst dictators today. Mari is very happy with Reaper, Jandro and Gunner, but she is getting closer to Shadow with every tattoo session. She is so conscious of not rushing him but her attraction to him is increasing daily. Shadow is so confused as he doesn't understand good emotions, such as love, affection, happiness, because he never experienced them in his awful childhood. He is the most gentle, sensitive, sweetest assassin ever and I need him to get the girl and be happy. Freyja is very talkative in this book and she offers very sage advice, bless her furry little goddess paws. Her adoration of Shadow continues, with her taking every opportunity to rub herself all over him, much like I want to do, as well as every other reader, I think! That cat is one smart feline. I like the Sons of Odin more and more as we see them in action. The three men intrigue me, especially Grudge who breaks down a barrier or two in this book. I would really like to find out more about them, so maybe a spin-off series, Crystal? There are some incredibly sexy times, some absolutely heartwarming moments and some heart-stopping ones too. An incredible book with another twist in the tale at the end. Crystal does like to throw in another vision to get us thinking about what is to come. I still have no idea where this is all leading but I need to find out. I hope we don't have to wait too long.
Its no secret I am a fan of this series,Crystal Ash is the Queen of SDMC and writes with such a passion for the storyline its palpable throughout each page.
Continuing on with Mari and her men this story is a little slower paced then the previous 4 but I understand why, it was important for Shadow to grow and Helpless is where it happens.
Shadows past really is troublesome and to find that it also happened to Grudge, they truly both deserve happiness, Mari sees Shadow on a deeper level, she looks beyond his scars with understanding and she sees the man he is meant to be.
Crystal really captured the essence of emotion when she writes about her characters feelings, we felt it with all the men and we are feeling it with Shadow although I truly feel this is only the beginning and things are going to get so much deeper with him. There is so much history to unearth and I can only imagine the challenge and the need to break that up into sections, as has been done so far, as to have it all at once would be too much of an overload . I really like shadow as a character and I am sure building a love for his character was intentional on Crystals side so the more of the darkness she reveals the more we build a hatred to anything that gets done to him but I have a tugging in my gut that what you will read or have read in the epilogue if you have already read it will be against Shadow.
The Club is on the road. Forced to flee after General Tash attacks, the club is seeking safety. A new place is found that looks like it might be a perfect spot but it comes with a request. A rescue mission. And when Mariposa volunteers to go with the rescue party, her husbands are not happy. Shadow is charged with keeping her safe and returning her home; an assignment he gladly accepts. And one he is willing to die for.
This book was mostly a disappointment. More sex than story. And my favorite guy Reaper lost some of his appeal. With his authority challenged by his woman, he has a temper tantrum and inflicts his own brand of punishment. When her other husbands fell in line behind husband #1, I wondered why Mariposa didn't find another room for the night. Fear shouldn't make you act like an a**. Use your words. The only saving grace in this book was Shadow. His history has always been the most interesting, his trauma the most heartbreaking. Now his character growth is extraordinary. His intelligence, his desire to be "normal" and to connect is compelling. And despite his best friend telling him he is unworthy, he dared to hope and won my love. I'm going to take a little break before beginning the next book and hopefully, the next book gets back on track.
This is a great series and this book 5 is a fab addition! The Steele demons mc take us on an emotional rollercoaster ride as they search for a new home! There’s drama and danger, there’s more heartache and pain, but there is also strength and unity and this shows the growth in the characters and their relationships. A series that just gets better and better as we progress and I wait eagerly for each new book!
Shadow...sigh...is just my favorite. I was so excited that this book focused on Mariposa and Shadow. Mainly letting their relationship grow. It is what I had been waiting for since the first book. This book was a great addition to this series. The next book though, you can feel the plot building in this one for a war. I hope all the guys make it through.
4.7 stars. Ughhhh. Things are going too well. There’s soooo many books left and all the foreshadowing hasn’t even begun to come to fruition yet.🥺I’m scared. I have a gut feeling that this is gonna get super ducking sad, real fucking soon.
I’m Excited still after 5 books, though. That’s big news right there. I’ve been DNFing after 1 1/2 lately.
Wow. This might be the best book in the series so far and it’s all because of Shadow. I’ve been waiting and waiting to hear his story and see how it all plays out with him and Mari. Squeeeeee! He’s just so appealing with his wounded heart, and his shyness around Mari. But he’s so intelligent and caring. I just adore him. He’s definitely my favorite out of all of the guys.
I’m chomping at the bit to find out what is coming next. I just hope it’s a HEA for everyone.
The SDMC are on the move for a new home after the attack on Sheol. Four Corners seems like it will suit, at least for now. I'm really liking T-Bone, Dyno and Grudge. I think Kyrie does, too. Then there's the likely familial connection between Shadow and Grudge.
Darren is once again leaving us with another cryptic message, but at least Reaper is finally able to talk to him. I'm guessing that something unpleasant is coming, though.
I think that if you are already 5 books into this series, then you are probably already invested and really could not care less what anyone has to say. I mean, that’s how I feel; I’m reading these books no matter what. Soooo….this review is more for those that are maybe interested in starting this series.
For people that enjoy dystopian society reads, then this series is right for you. For those that enjoy motorcycle club reads, then this series is for you. For people who enjoy fantasy reads…again…this series is for you. Are you someone who likes some spice in your reads?? Then, you guessed it! This series is for you! I mean, basically…this series is for everyone.
Okay, okay…yes I’m being biased because I freaking adore it, but I can’t help it. Its really good.
When I first picked up this series, I was not in mood? Mindset? for it. I just could not get into book one. Then, after a few months, I tried again and I was invested. I legit love the characters in this book, especially Shadow. I’m seriously a bit alarmed with myself with how much in love I am with a freaking fictional character. As a lover of rh books, I have a lot of fictional boyfriends, but Shadow has easily moved into one of the top 3. The man tugs at my heart strings and makes me want to lick him all over. Seriously, Shadow takes wounded hero to a whole other level, and I am SO HERE FOR IT!
So far, things have been building and relationships are being forged. With that, I can say that I am terrified to start the next book in this series. Things, in my opinion, are just going a little too good. I’m happy, and that can only mean one thing…things are about to get messy. Story of my life. Anyways, if you’ve been considering this series, then I highly recommend that you read it. If you find yourself a little on the fence after book one, then keep going. If after book two you still aren’t sold, then give it the good ole’ college try and pick up book three. By book three, I think you will be as hooked as I am.
This book frustrated me. We got almost no plot progression in fact, it seems like we are just dancing around the main plot. The beginning of this book was basically filler that didn’t really make much sense and just felt like it was stalling. The middle was great and action packed! Then the ending was heart wrenching and made you curious. I just feel like the great subplot that popped up and ended in this book was beating around the bush for the main plot.
I would really love this series more if it was more straightforward with the plot, but it dances around to a bunch of different ones and then they all just get jumbled in my head. The subplot that took place in this book was so phenomenal though! It was fast paced and nail biting! I just wish we got a bit more description in some places, though.
So I do need to confess something here, I opened the next book and was met with a rather large trigger warning. I was surprised, but prepared to endure the torture. However, I thought about it and was kind of nervous. Honestly, I’m not in the best headspace right now so I’m not sure that I can handle some extremely dark things right now. Unfortunately I have decided to step away from this series, but only temporarily. I will be back later to finish this series and hopefully can be more prepared for the triggers.
I do recommend this book if you plan on finishing the series, because there is a tad bit of plot to it and some subplot that might not make as much sense without the background. The issues I had with this book are not the cause for me stepping away for a short period of time, but they did frustrate me a bit. Hopefully it will get better from here! I promise I will be back to finish this series.
"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities. Also, Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame.
Thank the gods that Reaper is in charge and not Mariposa. He has a whole tribe he’s responsible for whilst she runs off willy nilly to rescue a woman she has never met. Yeah, the girl’s father could conceivably be very helpful to their future but that doesn’t outweigh the current vulnerability of the club. Mariposa sure doesn’t seem to exhibit much common sense when faced with danger. Her survival instinct is nil what with her need to rush into a war zone to patch up the injured. And those two bozos, Gunner and Jandro, sure don’t help. Then there’s her amazing second thoughts about leaving because of her “hungry need to feel all my men at the same time,” which puts her smack dab in the middle of TSTL territory.
Once they successfully complete their mission the governor of Four Corners offers them a home and promises to build a subdivision for the rest of the club members. This isn’t addressed in the book but my personal opinion is that they should turn him down. They will be giving up their autonomy and eventually there will most likely be a clash of personalties. They need to stick to a location where they are not beholden to anyone and Reaper is the main man.
Shadow and Mariposa are breaking down his barriers...

Ugh I love this series so much! Crystal Ash is a true gem and I could not be more thrilled that I discovered her and this series. Now, this being book 5, I'm sure you've read books 1-4 already. So I'll discuss this book from that perspective.
Book 5 absolutely does not disappoint. I've really gotten into the swing of Crystal's mix of story and sexy scenes, and this book stuck perfectly with that pre-determined pacing. The men are still wonderfully individualistic but also work together brilliantly. I honestly cannot wait to see how they include Shadow when that eventually happens! (Be honest, we all knew he was one of the 4 from book 1)
Though in this book, we get to see a great deal of Shadow. His growth is absolutely amazing, though the waiting for something to happen between him and Mari was rough, but man does it pay off!! This book is very focused on these two and their budding relationship, though for me didn't feel like it was too much. Though that's really my only warning for a reader going into this book is prepare for a lot of Shadow screen time. Again, no complaints here about it though!
Excellent excellent read, as always. Fantastic world building, realistic characters, hot sex scenes... this series seriously has it all!
🌟🌟ONE PHENOMENAL BEAUTY🌟🌟 Sensational! Crystal delivers one earth shaking, fire blazing, weak knee, block buster, spinning this action packed, heart pounding, pulse racing, adrenaline pumping masterpiece, keeping you riveted on a razors edge and frozen to your seat, wrapping this little treasure up sleek shiny and tight. A churning edy of challenging trials and arduous triumphs, noting the deadly twists and torturous turns, testing our characters in ways than they could have never anticipated. Restrictions are heightened and stretched, baring all the harsh facts, dangerous deals and frightening fiascos, igniting a fierce determination with such intensity and vigor, propelling this bad boy to life spectacularly. Negotiating a minefield of daring drama, underlying threats, unnerving rescue, riveting intrigue, escalating danger and spiraling suspense, traversing the cunning manipulations of vicious iniquity, atrocious deeds and heinous acts, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never anticipated. The characters, dialogue, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits adding depth and diversity, transforming into genuine formidable personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels like you transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Crystal, thanks for sharing this awesome little gem with us.
A new reader needs to start with book 1, as each book in the series continues where each previous book leaves off, & would not make sense otherwise. Book #5 is a great continuation of this series. I enjoyed it & it definitely held my attention. The dynamics in the RH in this book are definitely unique to any other RH book/series I've read, so that's a big plus. Shadow & Mari have a really slow burn thing going on in this book considering the simmering attraction to each other since book 1. I am a bit disappointed that they didn't get farther with the relationship evolving in this book, cause Shadow is my favorite character in the RH. Reaper, Jandro & Gunner- the other 3 guys in the RH, are unique in their own way. I have to say, Reaper is my least favorite at this point, he can be a real @ss at times. Jandro & Gunner are both both great characters & I can see the draw to them, I like both equally. Each guy has a different aspect to them that has their own place in the RH. They fit together like puzzle pieces. I like that this series, though it's a RH, is not all just about the sex. The actual story is very unique and has me invested to see where it goes. I really was frustrated about the small cliff-hanger ending though, leaving at that thing with Reaper with an unexplained portent of doom by his brother! Ugh, & it such a long wait until book #6!
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Mariposa is still totally awesome!! We catch up with her and the MC as they are getting ready to relocate to get away from General Tash. Mari has become much closer to Shadow by this point helping him make huge strides in his social life. This becomes important when they arrive at Four Corners to seek shelter for a temporary time until they find a new place to settle down. What they don't expect is for the Governor's daughter to be kidnapped making it necessary for them to help get her back in order to stay. Reaper is against the idea but agrees to let Shadow and Larkin go along with the Sons of Odin to help out. What he doesn't expect is Mari to demand to go as well. Good thing she does too as she saves the day both during and after the rescue. Thanks to an injury she has to stay with Shadow which just brings them even closer. Full of surprise, suspense, and fun all combines to create one fantastic addition to this series. A total must read. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
Helpless is book 5 in the Steel Demons MC series. A reverse harem, dystopian biker romance, with mythological gods as companions in the guise of a cat, dog, falcon, and raven. It is a thoroughly action-packed, sexy, adventurous, unique read. I only gave this read 3 stars because of a few reasons. First of all, when you read a 5 star read you KNOW it’s a 5 star read, and this one just didn’t wow me. Secondly, there were a few typos, as in misspelled words, and missing words etc. The writing could’ve been better. It did however leave off on a cliffhanger and I can see the potential this series has. Let me just conclude by saying that this series is a guilty pleasure read for me, and may not be for everyone.
Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy, Reverse Harem Romance, Post Apocalyptic, Dystopian Trigger Warnings: blood and gore Typo Count: 5
“Armed, dangerous, and foul-mouthed sweethearts, but sweethearts nonetheless.” 225
It has been so long since the previous book and I waited in anticipation for book 5 and I was not disappointed with this book. I absolutely loved reading this book. The story continues of the Steel Demon MC and their struggle to maintain the peace and the fight for the territory they claimed.
Reaper, Jandro, Gunner, Mariposa and Shadow are all settling into their roles. Mariposa is slowly winning over Shadow and he is learning to trust her. He acknowledges that he has feelings for her and he is learning to deal with them. Mari and Shadow get the chance to explore their friendship.
The Steel Demons leave their compound and move to new territory. Once again we are left to wait for the next book in the series.
I was given an advanced copy of this book to read and review with my honest and fair opinion.
The series went on a completely different direction than I anticipated with the subtle and then increasing inclusion of ancient gods. That didn't make it into the synopsis, but I really liked that addition. Storyline and characters were interesting. All was good up until the book 6. I'm so frustrated by the actions of the characters (and the author, what was she thinking?! She was doing a good job until then on plotting and character development!) at the end of book 6. They all lost their minds and acted stupidly, and made a mountain out of a molehill. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I'll probably read the next book, but idk, the stupidity at the end was really overwhelming and unnecessary and definitely soured me on the series and author, I'm not sure it's worth continuing.

More action now but I'm loosing faith in the harem and see the decline of the alpha biker. Why would 3 committed men allow their woman to go off on a dangerous mission without at least one of them? She's not with Shadow yet, but they are getting closer. Not sure I like this new Four Corners place for them. I want them to leave. I found the rescue of Kyrie unrealistic ( I know its fiction, but ...) in that they went in and took her out with all the army and weapons around. Didn't buy it, but then when Shadow gets injured (sorry spoiler) Mari treats him for sepsis by bleeding him? I guess the cat made sure he healed, but it was not convincing. The little side trip didn't further the plot and maybe skipped or shortened. Finally, I'm not a prude, but there was way to many pages spend on her discovery of a new hole for pleasure. Paged through the last half.
