Christmas at the Cove

Rate this book
Secrets are never discovered during the holidays, right? That's what these five best friends are banking on as they gather once again to Five Island Cove for what they hope will be a Christmas to remember.

AJ has a real boyfriend now, and he's really coming to the cove to meet her friends and family. She's turned into a domestic goddess as she preps to host Christmas at a rental that will hold everyone for the holidays. But beneath the bulky sweaters, AJ has a secret she won't be able to keep hidden forever.

Eloise is happily wearing her diamond ring, and she can't wait to spoil Aaron's children rotten over the holidays. But when he calls and says there's been an accident, Eloise will never look at Christmas the same.

Robin's just found out her husband needs a new fishing boat or he could sink while at sea. But they don't have the money to replace such a big-ticket item, and she's praying for a miracle this Christmas.

Kelli comes to the cove on a one-way ticket and more than she and her son need for a couple of weeks, but she's too humiliated to tell her friends that she is not cut out for a polyamorous relationship and that her husband has chosen that lifestyle over her.

Alice, struggling to make ends meet for the first time in her life, wants to be the one to bring them all together, bind up their broken hearts, and make Christmas wishes come true. When a mysterious benefactor allows her to do just that, she wonders what the ultimate price will be.

Because she knows better than anyone that everything has a price, and nothing comes for free...

Gather for the holidays with these five best friends as they celebrate Christmas at the cove, continue to find themselves and their future, and support each other through thick and thin.

Not a Standalone

When I saw this Christmas book at one of my favorite book review sites, I snapped it up because I was looking for Christmas books at the time. Unfortunately, it is not a book that can be read easily as a standalone. Several books precede it, and I think to best understand the books, they need to be read in order. It feels a bit like a jumbled mess to me, and I think it was part of it has to do with my unfamiliarity with the series. The author did do information dumps as the women were introduced, which I never like to see. The author probably did it to help readers like me who aren't that familiar with his series (or to refresh the series’ previous readers’ minds), but all that telling rather than showing is a bit dull. There's a lot going on in this book, following the lives of four women, their spouses/SOs, and their children. Honestly, it's a bit hard to keep track of as the viewpoints cycle through each main female character. Aside from the information dumps, the writing style is actually pleasant and easy to read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

A long and complicated story. The back cover mentions five major characters, but in fact, there are actually seven. These seven each have four or five significant family members, making a total of over 35 significant characters. Just trying to keep everybody and their relationships to the major characters makes for somewhat difficult reading. Although the title suggests that it is a Christmas book, in reality, Christmas is a very background happening. The book is set on some islands off-shore in New Jersey and the major focus is on a tsunami which strikes the islands a couple of weeks before Christmas, and all the damage and recovery from that storm.

Although the story line is very complicated by so many characters, the book is reasonably well written, and the author tell a good story without resorting to foul language and sex.

Typos, typos, typos....

There are so many typos in this book, I cannot believe that I paid for this. It reads like a rough draft for a fiction class. Does anybody proofread anymore? At one point in the book Eloise's name became Elise!

I think strong female friendships

are wonderful.... maybe because I grew up with my mama's EIGHT sisters and watched their ties ebb and flow much like Kristen watches her girls. I love seeing how each one encourages and strengthens the others..

This is book four of the Five Island Cove series and the old Seafaring Girls are going to meet again for Christmas on Five Island Cove, for the grand opening of the Cliffside Inn. The five women are meeting at Eloise’s Inn before it opens, and AJ, Robin, Keli and Alice will join Eloise there to help do a test run for the holidays. AJ Proctor who still lives in New York, but whose boyfriend Matt Hymas, lives on the island, has to face a big decision about her relationship and where she will be happiest. Now she quit her job at the sports network station, she is earning more in her career as a freelance sports columnist and enjoying getting all the credit for her hard work, all for herself. It is a job she can do pretty much anywhere. Robin Glover has her husband Duke’s birthday to contend with first, awaits his return from his fishing trip, in a boat that is becoming dangerous and needs replacing. Thankfully, the threats of the year before seemed not to have materialized and Duke and everyone else are still safe. She is doing well with her role as a wedding and events planner, with five brides lined up in the next few months.

Kelli Thompson is facing up to the fact that her husband’s move with their courier business to Jersey, is now permanent and he doesn’t want to be in Five Island Cove any longer, but wants her to consider a marriage with another woman in their home. Now she has to decide where she and her son Parker will live and one choice is a home she owns on Bell Island, mortgage free, but which needs a good bit of renovating. If Eloise could do it with the Cliffside Inn, then she is sure she can do it with a much smaller home. Eloise now has Aaron and his children to love and spoil, especially over the holiday period, but an earthquake far away, triggers a deadly event and fear for some of their loved ones. Alice gave everything up to her evil ex and is now struggling to make ends meet, but is still the one to bring all the women together and to push them to help each other with their problems. Two other women are added to the mix, Kristen and Laurel, who bring a slightly different approach to life and love.

Devastation is left behind on the island and a mysterious benefactor promises to make some Christmas wishes come true for residents, but surely there must be a twist behind this piece of good fortune? Alice has signed up all her friends, family and loved ones who need assistance to rebuild, to this funding cause, but begins to have doubts about who might be behind it all and what the true costs will be for those who are chosen. The benefactor creates a huge wedge between the women once their identity is revealed and it is left to all to make their own choices on their futures and whether to accept this help, knowing it could break apart the friendship they have all relied upon for years. Some of the women have dealt with abusive relationships and hardships, which their friends were there to help them pick up the pieces from. Always there with a shoulder to cry on or a video group call to talk through any issues. Friendship that has lasted that long and through so much, is not something to throw away over money. A group of strong women, meeting before the holidays for what they thought would be a relaxing get together, but which turns out to be so much more. New loves and old, children and parents, struggling with a bad situation or just simply paying the bills, a realistic hotch potch of life and the struggles most go through, but together for Christmas no matter what. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

This is book four in The Five Island Cove Series and it continues the story of the five best friends at Christmas time. AJ, Eloise, Robin, Kelly and Alice are all at the cove to spend Christmas together but as usual things do not always go as planned and as they have they all have there own struggles to deal with being together and supporting each other is the most important thing. There are twists and turns along the way and you feel everything that they are going through even if it is sad or happy the main thing is that they will all get through it together and that is what true friendship is all about. I absolutely love this series and I can't wait to read the next book to see what will happen next. I definitely recommend you read this book and series and you will not be disappointed.

I've enjoyed this series very much up to this book. It felt like it was written by a different author. For starters - and a pet peeve - where the huge numbers of typos and factual mistakes. I think self-publishing has greatly added to this problem because of the lack of professional editing.

Then, without any spoilers, there was the entire issue, for me, about one of the friend's attempt to help the others. This entire part of the book smacked of unethical behavior. In addition, this group of friends is not facing poverty by any means!

I got tired of rolling my eyes because of the many holes in the story as well.

Just a hot mess!

Never wanting to end on a bad note - the previous books were fun, light-reading. The author has something here just needs better advice and editing. I do plan to read more - possibly!

Another good installment in the series.

I do agree with other reviewers, a lot of typos and one time the page said one of the ladies’ names but it was clearly the wrong name as it didn’t make sense for the one noted.

I also noticed a 2nd time we didn’t get much explanation about a character. In book 1, we find out secrets about Joel but never learned WHY or what else was behind it. Here, we meet Diane Proctor but don’t get much more of her back story. A little but then AJ just forgives her without getting answers, or was strange. All her friends didn’t take money that could have really helped bc she was so mad at her, but then she forgives her quickly and no one ever goes back to say “ok so can we take the help now?” - it was just kind of odd.

But overall I still enjoyed the story and all the girls, plus leaning more about Laurel too now. I’ll keep reading until the end!

More a 4.5 ⭐ rating!

Christmas at the Cove: Uplifting Women's Fiction, by Jessie Newton is a story of a group of Seafaring Girls who had promised years back they would always stay in touch and meet regularly on Five Island Cove. Except life happens, of course. As young adults, they all reunited years later on the Cove for a death (in the first book).

In this book, Christmas at the Cove, the women have all made plans to spend a few days at The Cliffside Inn, owned by Eloise, one of the Seafaring girls. The Inn will have its grand opening right after the Seafaring Girls (AJ, Alice, Eloise, Robin, Kelli, and Kristin) have had their group visit at the Inn, as a run-through for the grand opening.

However, on the same day they're to check in at The Cliffside Inn, a hurricane is headed their way, along with a tsunami, with each woman being affected in some way.

I know all stories need angst or trouble to move a story forward. I just didn't care how Ms. Newton used the major weather event to introduce yet more angst into the story, esp a long past angst, and esp being Christmas Time nor how quickly the secondary angst was cleared. This secondary angst and the swift solution is my reason for giving Christmas the Cove 4.5 Stars.

On a happy note, I didn't catch any misspelled words, grammatical or punctuation errors, words missing, etc. In today's world of proofreading and editing, where obvious errors are not caught or corrected, reading this book with no errors was sheer bliss! (I'm not perfect either - I found a few errors in my review, since fixed!)

This is the third book I have read now on the Five Island Cove girls. They are starting to feel like family! This series is very heartwarming and I find myself sad when they are sad, happy when they are happy. This book was great! I love how the friends all joined together for Christmas, but still had to face their fair share of drama and hardships. This book had a huge shock in the middle and it answers some questions the reader may have about AJ and her past. I do find myself still confused at times about who goes with who since there are so many characters. I do feel a recap in the front of each book would be helpful. Can't wait to read more by Jessie.

Christmas Un The Cove

Great book like always I love how 4 best friends come together for each other no mater the trials. They include their Seafaring Mom in with them after a disaster strikes they pull together to make things right. Even bring a stranger into their pack, Lauren (Laural) is a sweet lady cop n friend of the Cheif. Glad El and She becomes friends she n Paul seem like a good fit. The jury ( me ) is still out on Alice new guy and can’t wait to read mor about them. An and Matt seem cute together n glad her sister n father n she seem to be making progress. Her mother seems as phony as a $3 Bill not sure she can be trusted. We will have to wait n see. Happy Reading can’t wait for the new book to come out

Though Christmas is in the title, the holiday didn’t impact the story, but a tsunami did. This is story about strong female characters and the friendships they maintain. This is the first book in the series I have read, and I believe I might have liked the book better had I known the back-stories of the many characters. That being said, several of the reviews on this book indicate that it is not as well written as the previous books in the series. The anticipation of the tsunami and dealing with its aftermath was quite interesting, more so than some of the other aspects of the novel. As the story jumped around so much, it was hard to remember who said and did what, but by the end of the story, it really didn’t matter.

It was such fun reading about and catching up with the Five Seafaring Girls. I enjoyed reading about their pasts and getting a chance to see how their pasts influenced their lives today. I also liked reading about their struggles with events on the island and how that brought them together and only made their bond stronger.

This book was riveting. I liked their old traditions and the new one of staying at the Inn for a few days before Christmas every year. I cannot wait to see what happens to them in the next book. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

This is the fourth book of this amazing series and it brings some big surprises. I really enjoy the way the friends take care of each other when hard issues and hard times come. I love the way
the men in their lives know how much their friends need each other. I like the way the women deal with their teenagers and how some of the discussions are hard. I enjoyed every part of this story and can hardly wait for the next one.

This was a solid, interesting and apt Christmas read, but I felt as though I needed to have read the previous books in the series to really appreciate the story arc of this novel. This was a catch all Christmas novel, where all the players from the previous novels in the series were mentioned and as a reader of series, I felt as though I had jumped forward and was the outsider spending Christmas with a family I would really like.
I'm getting all the previous books in this series just to catch up.

Gawd it was good to see the ladies again but wow they are not getting the Christmas they thought they would, however you get to see them shine and come together as the amazing women they are, that's not to say you aren't taken aback and at times shocked with the twists or revelations that come out and that storm oh my that had me worried, however it turned into the perfect storm to push certain things to be said and hopefully the ladies have also added a new member to their groups.

Another great addition to a wonderful series. You'll enjoy catching up with the characters again and what a better time than during Christmas. The story pulls you in and makes it hard to stop turning the pages. It's heartwarming, enjoyable and has you feeling so many emotions while you fall in love with the characters. This is one of those books and series that you can read again and again and never get tired of it.

I read my first "Five Island Cove" series book several years ago. I wasn't very impressed with the quality of writing, the character development, or the plot development. This is the 4th book of this series that I've read and I'm sorry to say, my opinion of the series hasn't changed. I keep coming back to this series as I like the characters. I want to care about the various situations and sub plots that are presented in the series. But Ms. Newton brings too many negative factors into her novels. I won't be reading any more of her writings.

I was looking for Christmas books. Downloaded some free ones on my B&N app. Did not realize this book was part of a series. It’s a decent book but can be confusing with all the back story unknown. It shares some but I’m sure reading the ones prior would be beneficial. I don’t feel like I can give it a rating since I read it out of order. Took me forever to read because I lost interest when I realized I am missing 3 other books of information but I was too deep to just stop. Maybe one day I’ll read the other ones and then give it a rating.

This was a great story that had Christmas at the core! Eloise is finally opening her Island Inn and she's invited her friends to test it out for a weekend before the Inn opens for guests. Of course, a Tsunami hits the Island and those who are sheltered at the Inn are safe, but so many more people had to come because it was the highest place on the Island. Everyone pitched in to help prepare and serve food to all the guests. But there were a few who were not able to get to the Inn before it hit - their stories were incredible!

This is about five friends that meet at the Cove for Christmas. They all have problems and issues. They all have secrets, but they are friends. I found this to be a great story. This is about holidays and friends and coming together. It was warm and fuzzy and I think we can all relate to having firends like these. HIghly recommend this book if you just want a warm feel good story.

A heartwarming story of five best friends who come together to support each other through individual trials and tribulations and a tsunami that hits their cove. It's a beautiful story but I got a little confused with all the names of the five plus their extended families and all the voice parts narrator Jill Smith had to use. The benefactor was quite a surprise, but the bond of their friendships was undeniable!

Book 4 The Five Island Cove

This definitely my type of story; friends, beaches. . The series is about girlfriends who have been friends since school times. They stick together and help each other get through difficult times. This story was mainly about a bed & breakfast reopening with Eloise running it. Only I feel there are too many characters to keep track of, including all their issues and families.

friends and others

I love these books. The longtime friendships of a group of women that go back to their teenager years is heartwarming. These women are getting older, life is changing in many ways, but still their friendship abides. The group is growing with new loves and new friends, but the bond holds as they come together for Christmas. Even in the face of adversity, they stand strong together, upholding one another and providing strength when it’s needed.

Too many characters

There were way too many characters in this story. The main female friends, their partners, exes, children, in-laws, townspeople. I could only get through about a third of this book when I had to give up. I wrote down names as they appeared in the story, but got tired of the need to reference my list. I thought I was getting a nice little Christmas story. Very disappointed.

Light read, light on plot. Hard to distinguish between the characters. This was my first book in this series, so it might be easier to differentiate between them if I started with the first book. Even so, the voices of the characters were very similar.
I listened to it on audio, and the narrator was ok but sometimes stilted. It was a bit better once I increased the audio speed. Some of the shifts in voice that she did for the characters were almost identical.
