Behind every great alchemist is...an alcoholic teacher?

A friend has paid the ultimate price to protect Mariela and has returned to the ley line. As the survivors deal with the fallout of losing someone dear, a crimson-haired woman awakens after two hundred years of slumber and starts making a show of some incredibly powerful magic. This so-called Sage of Calamity has Mariela crafting potions like never before. Not everyone is so eager for all the new changes that brings to the Labyrinth City, however. The young alchemist will have to watch her back-she just may end up kidnapped!

There was a Lot to Take in, while reading this volume. At First The main characters are dealing poorly with the lost of a good friend. Then Mariela's Master arrives after sleeping for 200 years. After that it's never boring in the city.
It was nice to the Teacher/Master arrive to take the story in new Directions, While Mariela continues to grow as an alchemist. Not a lot of action, but still enough to keep the story going. I thought the next volume was going to end the story but appearently there is a 6th volume coming out.

I had the feeling the author would kill a character so I made the mistake of reading the ending of book 3 first and what happened was too cruel. I knew if I read the volume in its entirety I would have give up on the series so I decided to skip it. I'm happy for Mariela for meeting someone from her time but I'm still mad at what happened in the previous volume. It broke my heart everytime Lynx was mentioned.

There is some actual story progress here, but big new character Frey’s is pretty much a trope who is highly irritating, some of the big plot reveals aren’t too impressive or interesting, and the side bits are mostly the interesting parts except for the largely pointless tragic backstory for one of the side characters.

Good stuff. Continue to like this series. After a dip in vol 2, vols 3 and 4 are building us towards a climax. Set up well for what I understand is the last volume in vol 5 (with a gaiden volume to follow).

Finally finished it. The middle part dragged a bit for me but it was definitely still a good book!
