Maybe I’ve been in education too long to truly appreciate this book. I think, for a new teacher, this book is gold. For me, I found myself a little bored, and I also felt like it was just a little bit out of touch. Especially, the advice to teachers for “self-care“ is out of touch. Some of the recommendations in the book don’t take into account the massive requirements placed on teachers daily. It’s hard to practice these strategies and brain-based learning basics when a teacher’s own very basic needs are not being met.

Some really good information in this book. Some sections really made me think and evaluate my current teaching practice. Others made my eyes roll. The “In the Classroom” tip sections, I found the suggestions a bit out of touch and did not like the self-care section at the end (felt a bit patronizing) but overall, the book is full of sticky notes for me to go back to so still worth the read. I’ll just find my own way forward with the info, rather than rely on their “tips and tricks”.

If I could require every teacher to read this book, I would. I learned so many strategies on how to help my students learn, feel safe, and how I can protect myself from burnout. I loved all the scientific explanations of WHY some strategies work and others don’t. This is a must read.

Kindle edition is great. Third edition is much needed overhaul.
Second Edition is hot garbage.
