Drop Trooper #3

Danger Close

Rate this book
All Cam Alvarez has known is war.

For three years, he’s fought the marauding alien Tahni on one God-forsaken planet after another, leading a squad of armored Drop Troopers.

But the war is about to change.

Cam is an officer now, fresh out of OCS and taking charge of his old platoon, and things have reached a tipping point. Instead of fighting a desperate holding action against the enemy, the Commonwealth is finally ready to take back the human colonies the Tahni seized early in the war. To free the people the enemy have kept as human shields.

However, victory comes at a price. Both for the hostage colonists and the Marines who fight to free them. When innocent lives are at stake, every shot fired is danger close…

This is the third book in the series and our hero, Cam Alverez, has a crisis of faith - in himself, in his relationships, in the cause. Excellent character development without losing sight of a fast action plot of daredevil rescue and adventure. Partlow is a great story teller and this military SF series gets better book by book. Strong language. Recommended for fans of the genre and any interested in finding out what military mech science fiction is all about.

My god…. Just wow….

It has been a long time sense I was able to rate a book with 5 stars and this one takes the cake. In less than 300 pages the book flew by for me which is always a good thing seeing every second I had to myself I was on my kindle reading this crazy enraged, screaming, SCI-FI series. Very few authors I have been reading in the past year were able to pull me in this dangerously progressively plot like Mr. Rick Partlow. Being an active duty Marine myself I can’t begin to tell you how many wannabe war story’s I have read that were corny, grungy, and predictable coming from authors who had little to no sense of Marine jargon or a militaristic culture. At no point in any of his books so far in the Drop Ship Troopers series that I have read did I feel any of those emotions. I am now addicted to this series and look forward to reading book number four Direct Fire.

Without giving away the book three here are some things that I enjoyed.

Explosiveness: When I tell you this book literally jumps your brain into gear it is not an understatement. While there is a stiff build up in OCS school for our young warrior Cam the book basically sends a missile package to the reader when he gets out of the course and back to the frontlines with his old unit. The battles start mashing together and you literally start feeling the mental fatigue of young LT Cam Alverez. As the book progresses the author does not hold back a any raw data the main character is going through and puts the reader practically in the vigilantes armored suit.

Dramatic Plot: After reading Contact Front (Book 1), Kinetic Strike (Book 2) and now Danger Close (Book 3) the storyline is all coming together in an engaging detail. I love all of Cam’s relationships and throughly enjoyed each conquest he has had to endure creating a true military sci fi classic with a hint of space opera that mix’s to a kick ass series.

Easy To Follow: I have to admit I had a rough start in book one through two due to the shotgun battles and action confusing action scenes. I felt like the plot was just being thrown around in some parts and I personally had a hard to understanding who the enemy actually were/where they came from and the dynamics of the united governments of the Commonwealth. In book three it all comes to gather and it was incredibly easier to follow. I don’t know if that was the authors intentions but like I said before I am hooked now and look forward to what comes next.

Easy, Enjoyable Read

I’ve read this author before, and really enjoyed his Recon series. This story, probably all of his, follows a formula that others use and fail miserably. You’ll get it as you go.

I was engaged throughout and embraced the characters. Character driven story as most good books are. Author uses magic or something, I don’t know.....

Overall, as story unfolds, plot and storyline is not complicated but complicated because we’re dealing with people — characters emotions, feelings, morals and how they react to an array of adversity and a different reality — combat arms in a war.

And he does it the old fashioned way — no multiple POV’s changing the story’s pace, despite this as #3 in series, author hasn’t stopped character development and doesn’t overwhelm you with improbable, nonstop action. Tho MC gets a little out of hand, here n there.

Mil is good, strong but not great. And it doesn’t have to be. One bit of confusion for me — there’s Drop Troops and Force Recon. Is that it from ground pounder standpoint? I guess Force Recon is ingrained into my brain housing as an upper tier and then lower tiers below. After 3 books , also don’t understand why Recon doesn’t have weapons to combat OpFor Drop Troops. Just a peeve along with PC ratio — way too skewed. Since author former Army Officer, he’d be aware of US Army’s current dismay as they’re attempting to PC comply and the impact to performance.

So......Not much science if that’s a major factor in your reading. Reasonably credible , characters I liked n embraced, good dialogue, story’s not complicated n easy to follow using words I can understand wo using a dictionary.

Recommend but you have to read the previous two.

I don’t usually read books back-to-back, but for this series I just might continue doing that. I really, really like the way it’s written and the whole story. While it’s far in the future, it could very well be just about any young kid getting ready for a career in the military. At one time, we did have a judicial system that offered trouble makers the opportunity to join the military or go to jail. I would think that most of those that opted for the military were thanking their lucky stars they got the choice. While the military isn’t a piece of cake, it’s got to be a lot better than going to jail or prison.

That’s the choice, well, almost the choice our main character, Cameron Alvarez, got to make. Except his other choice was to go into cryo-hibernation for 100 years or something like that. He chose wisely to go into the Marines and now he’s getting ready for something he would never have believed or asked for. And that something is Officer Candidate School (OCS). Something I’m quite familiar with if I may say so.

Cam is now a Sergeant with the respect of everyone around him in his company. He’s even got the attention of his company commander, a crusty old veteran, who nominated Cam for OCS. It’s just that Cam doesn’t know if he wants to be an officer. He’s not sure he’s cut out to be one and thinks he’s hardly ready to be a squad leader. Yet, he’s ready to get his OCS a try and see what happens. Hopefully he doesn’t run into the wrong kind of trainers, but you never know what’s going to happen in an environment like this.

This is kind of a two part book in that we get to see Sergeant Alvarez successuflly pass OCS and become a brand new 2 Lieutenant (2Lt). He goes right back to his old company (which is kind of strange), and is assigned as Platoon Leader with the same Platoon Sergeant that he worked with before. Still, Lt Alvarez and Gunnery Sgt. Scott Hays made a great team and were able to get their platoon in shape in quick time in order to go on their first mission. This book takes us through about three different missions with Lt. Alvarez learning something new in each one. He’s now got the responsibility for a lot of troops some of which aren’t going to be coming back.

At the same time, his girl friend, Vicky, has also been chosen to go to OCS. So she’s off to do her thing and Cam has to do the missions while she’s gone just like she had to do. He had his doubts that he’ll survive all of this and doesn’t know if the two of them have a future or not. It’s a real love story in a military sci-fi book, but it’s written very well and seems plausible, I guess.

The last mission in this book is a bad one. Not everyone is going to come back, as I said before, and one of those not coming back is a significant player in the story. Don’t know how this will impact 2Lt Alvarez since he’s already dealing with a number of his troops being killed already. It’ll be interesting to see him develop further.

The next book, “Indirect Fire” should be another winner!

After finishing book 2, Cam was off to OCS, a place where they attempt to turn NCO’s into officers in the span of four months. The Marines are desperate for officers with combat experience with all of the recent loses.

OCS feels like a combination of boring college lectures with a lot of interval training type workouts. Cam has a way with instructors and superior officers, as we would expect. It is sad to realize the political crap is common in the uniformed services.

Once back to his unit, the story truly takes off. As in his company is prepping for another planetary assault. With Cam continuing to grow and evolve as a Marine, the author begins to present dilemas combat units face when civilians are involved. This isn’t a light touch, but one that forces the reader to ask themselves what would they have done in the same situation.

While still a lot of fun to follow Delta platoon, the author has raised the bar again in the series. Be ready for a lot of action, suspense and change only war can bring.

This third episode is a little more varied than the previous one. It remains a fairly basic military entertainment, a transposition of the Marines in space, but there is a real sincerity in the doubts which assail the main character, confronted with death and the atrocities of war.
And as it reads "on its own", that the main plot is sufficiently well constructed to make you want to know the rest of the events and that we do not see the usual page inflation (the different volumes do not exceed 300 pages), nothing stands in the way of continuing the adventure.

Excellent story.

I've written reviews of Ricks Drop Trooper stories previously. I don't know how he keeps the characters so honest and understandable while still keeping the action realistic, even if it is a sci-fi story. I will be buying the next in the series as I am hooked on finding out what happens next. Recommended to sci-fi readers as a good quality action story.

This is the 3rd in this series about a Heavy Armor Infantryman. The SF concept is a starship trooper. Marine trained in the use of Armor and makes drops from troop ships - Think parachute from a C-130 aircraft but space shuttle and jetpacks with powered armor mech.
This is a hardcore space opera series. If you've read the Honor Harrington series by David Webber this is the Marine's version. The book will keep you moving through as the war continues to develop but we also spend a lot of time with the character dealing with the problems that come with being a mustang officer as well as the horrors of war. We're given several scenarios that explore what happens when the operations order doesn't match reality. In other words no plan survives contact with the enemy.
I have enjoyed this story of Lt Alvarez living in a dystopian war environment. I would recommend the books for anyone that like heavy infantry and hard core SF.

Like the series, but don’t like the fact that The books are so sad.

I know the books are about the theater of war, and one man’s journey through it. But the books are so sad, cam loses everyone he’s close to except for one person. I guess were dramatic license this has to happen but it’s so darn depressing. Even in books concerning war we should have something uplifting in this day and age. The cast is very eclectic and you’re sad when people die. I don’t think we need this kind of material with Covid and other issues out there today. We read books for escapism and we want our heroes to succeed right along with their friends. I hope the series gets a little better and brighter or I am done.

Book 3

Book 3 had errors throughout and was an okay read. The MC goes to officer's school and tries to teach others how to live through battles. The learning they are doing will not help or save anyone once in a fight and he hopes to change how they teach. There are a few good twists in the book, but overall was slow and a bit repetitive.

If you love military sci-fi that hits hard and never lets up, Contact Front is your next obsession. Rick Partlow throws you straight into the fire with Cam Alvarez, a street-smart ex-con who gets a second chance as a Marine Drop Trooper—and wow, what a ride.

What I Loved:

• Action-packed from the start: The combat scenes are intense, cinematic, and totally immersive.
• Cam Alvarez is a beast: He’s flawed, tough, and surprisingly relatable. Watching him evolve is half the fun.
• The tech is awesome: Powered armor, orbital drops, alien warfare—it’s like Halo meets Starship Troopers.
• Real emotional stakes: It’s not just explosions and adrenaline. There’s heart, loyalty, and redemption woven in.

This book kicks off a massive series, and it’s easy to see why fans keep coming back. If you’re into gritty sci-fi with a pulse, Contact Front delivers in spades.

Danger Close (Drpp Trooper Book 3)

Danger Close is the third book out of four in the Drop Trooper series and in it, Cam Alvarez, who began the series as a petty crook forced to join the marines has been sent to officer training and expects to learn how to lead a platoon.  Instead, he finds a hostile environment where the commander seems intent on flunking him and everyone else out and doesn’t seem to care if they learn anything.  When he tries to change things, he finds himself in trouble, as usual, and he hasn’t even met the enemy yet.
Great book, the characters draw you in and make you want to get to know them better.  Can’t wait for book four!

It's weird and a bit disconcerting to say I "enjoyed" this book and am "enjoying" this series. How do I say I enjoy something that is describing death after death after death of both human and alien life? Maybe it's living a situation, vicariously through reading a book and not actually having to experience what I'm reading. That's the marvel of reading, of being "transmogrified" (to use a Calvin and Hobbes theme) into another world, another person's life, other circumstances that are truly alien--of being there and not being there. That's what's happening as I face deadly enemies and stare down death through the eyes of the drop troopers.

I don't know whether it's just that this series has grown on me, or that there was more character development in this story, or both. But this has gone from a decent time-spender when I'm in the mood for space marines to a legit wonderful series that I'm invested in.

Cam goes to officer candidate school and emerges as a Lieutenant in this story and a lot of the plot has to do not only with the progressing war against the Tahni, but with Cam adjusting to his new leadership role and struggling with the new feelings of belonging somewhere for a change. Unfortunately, this comes with having to make life and death decisions that involve more than just his own life.

While I fall out of many series around the 4th book, I think I'm more invested than ever in the Drop Trooper series.

Third time definitely a charm!

Bottom line up front, said the paratrooper to the sky diver, "I don't care how many do called jumps u got, ya still a leg!!!" That's probably how the recon marines who actually parachuted into a combat zone felt about the armored combat marines, in their comfortable, injury absorbing suits. I did enjoy the book very much and understand the transition from nco to officer Cam had to go through. Being a "Mustang" isn't easy. The author shows us that in this must read third book in the series. Yes next book ordered, nuff said!!!

Author Rick Partlow continues to produce fantastic military sequences that seem to be more than believable

They jump off the pages. Fresh Second Lieutenant Alvarez fresh from OSC IS THROWN INTO HIS FIRST COMMAND. With new NCO's and not many combat veteran's has only days to get organized. Thankfully he's got his trusted Sergeant to help bring him into leading his platoon into a bullish battle.
This series is truly a must read Drop Trooper "Marines" is absolutely one of the Best!!

In this story Cam and the other Drop Troopers have taken Silvanus back from the Tahni. Cam has become a Second Lieutenant and his love has gone to OCS to become one too. Now, the military is heading to rid the galaxy of the Emperor and the remaining Tahni.

Again, I bought this as a a bundle of books but I'm reviewing them separately.

No romance, except for a couple of kisses, and the F-bomb is used in all 4 books 393 times.

As for the narration: James Patrick Cronin does a wonderful job narrating these stories.

Excellent

Mr Partlow just cannot write these books fast enough for me. I have the publication dates stenciled in on my calendar, and as the day gets closer when the next is supposed to see the light of day I'm on his FB page and on Amazon a few times a day just to see if its maybe there already... And once the book is there I read it in one sitting, keeping one eye on the progress bar trying to read slower to make the story last longer. But it never works.

Still a good series

The series is still a good read but some of the tactics presented are highly questionable for a space faring culture and the main character constantly being in trouble with his superiors is getting old. How the main character left the moon raid was farcical at best and the final battle was predictable from the very start.

I still recommend the book though, just don't look too deep or try to apply any actual tactics to the book.

I read the first 4 books in this series in one week. The characters are realistic as are the battle scenarios. The books have a great balance between training chapters and action chapters. I'm impressed with the character development of main character Cam Alvarez. The author does a great job at developing the inner thoughts of Cam as he progresses through the stories. In each book, his perspective and thought processes clearly mature.

Excellent

But enough of blood and guts, death and destruction... I need to get over the sick to my stomach sensation and get back to living my life in paradise. I have no idea if this author is actually writing about military realities... Realities that he or those he knows have lived... But I hope not!!! Maybe it's better if I don't know and just chalk it up to an imagination I'm glad I don't have!

Great Quarantine series

Great book...

...in a great series. The third installment of Cam Alverez's continued journey is another hit by Rick Partlow. This series is a big step above the standard military sci-fi with thoughtful, insightful personal growth of the main character, and a hard look at his psychological challenges and decision making as a military leader. Expertly crafted and hard to put down.

Man, I have to say I expected the series to wind down and bog at some point, but I assure you, it did not! Danger Close continues with swiftly-moving action and great writing. I will not hesitate to continue with the Drop Trooper series, nor will I overlook reading Partlow's Wholesale Slaughter series when the chance arises!

This was just as good as the previous ones. Just as fast-paced and sometimes just as emotional. I liked it a much. Giving it 4 stars, though instead of 5, because it starts to become a bit routine at this point. And this is not a problem. I like the routine and I will continue with the series. And if there is nothing more than the routine than I will be happy. But I think that there is more.

I don’t normally do a mid series review..

But I thought the story and writing deserved a kudos salute and a job well done. It’s also interesting reading this timeline after I’ve read other later stories.
Maybe G. Lucas had those Star Wars stories in the right order too. ;) I guess I am saying this prequel is a breath of fresh air.

Such a good book and series. I probably don’t have to tell you that if you are following along with the series.

A little more nuanced this time around. Cam is maturing and learning through the pain of time in combat.

I have already preordered the next book. They are coming out quick!
