Meyer "Mike" Friedman's extraordinary curiosity and dogged determination led him to make several major discoveries related to the heart described in this book. His final contribution, perhaps his most telling, was to show how chronic human distress--what he called the Type A Behavior Pattern--could be changed by reducing hostility and increasing humility. Friedman helped to humanize how we look at heart disease, especially the social and emotional roles played in their onset and in their treatment.
