Cain's Cross, book 2 in Bullard's Battle series.

Cain—hearing a killer’s last words, “You’re next,”—knows his time is running out, not only for him but for his entire team. As members of his team search for the still missing Bullard in the ocean, Cain has focused on tracking the killer’s history, hopefully to lead to the madman after them all. A trip to Sicily brings more information to light but also more puzzles to sort out. And an unexpected light in Cain’s life.

When Petra picks up the two men at the airport, she has no idea how fast her personal life is about to unravel. Not only do these men bring up old terrible memories but they also shine a light on an ugly corner of town. People she avoids at all costs.

Still she can’t afford to dwell on the past, as her present blows up. With Cain and Eton at her side, they’re all trying to stay alive, as the bodies drop around them.

Nice!

This new series has really stood up to the standards already set by the success of the other interconnected series by this author, and then some!

This story has an agenda. Find the leader and the group responsible for attacking their team, wounding Ryland and Garret, and possibly killing their boss, Bullard. Someone is after the remaining members of Bullard’s team and time is not on their side.

Cain and Eaton arrive in Sicily to track down leads to someone connected to the attack on Ryland and Tabi, figure out just where this person fits into the whole scheme of things, like who hired him and who are the other people on that payroll. Before arriving, their clues lead them to a B&B with ties to their person of interest, Chico, so they arrange to stay at the B&B in hopes of discovering more than just a few leads.

Petra agrees to go to the airport for her Aunt & Uncle, who run the B&B, to pick up their new guests even though she doesn’t work for them or live at the B&B. Her Aunt & Uncle, however, depend on the income paid by Petra to care for her invalid father who lives with them. Petra works for a lab and is also researching her father’s mental condition in her free time and puts all her money into her father’s care.

This story gets exciting when leads start snowballing as well as the danger Cain Eaton, and now Petra, are in. No one in this small old town can be trusted, not even the Aunt & Uncle. The mystery is who is behind the danger? With Ice’s help, more information is found, more people become dangerous and some turn out to be just plain evil. Petra finds this out the hard way, but she has no time to grieve.

I like how slowly but surly agendas are revealed and the reasoning is horribly skewed. Innocent people have been murdered for nothing more than jealously and greed. The promise of money is a great motivator for desperate people to do unconscionable things, murder becomes common place, all in the name of survival and entitlement.

While more immediate questions are answered, the basic questions of who and why still remain for the team to figure out. During this phase of the cat and mouse game, Cain finds his other half and Petra finds her partner in life. This is a book that you can’t put down until you find out who is behind the threats to Bullard’s team. I’m excited for the next book in this series!

Difficult to finish

This read was not that engaging and difficult to finish. It felt stiff and stilted. I only know there was a connection between Cain and Petra because the author said so a few times. I certainly couldn’t feel it or see it. The dialogue was juvenile and the plot was scattered and unbelievable. I’m sadly not enjoying this series at all. They just keep getting worse, which makes me very sad. I had been looking forward to seeing Bullard find his happiness. I just don’t know if I can struggle through these to do it.

At the end of the previous book in the series, Cain heard the killer telling him that "You're next" and so he knows that time is running out both for him and the rest of his team. As some members of the team continue to search for Bullard in the ocean, Cain is focussed on tracking the killer's history to hopefully lead to whoever is after them all. A trip to Sicily brings more pertinent information to light but also even more puzzles to solve as well as an unexpected light into Cain's life. When Petra picks up two men at the airport for her Aunt and Uncle she has no idea just how much her own personal life is about to unravel. Not only do they bring up some old memories that were quite terrible, but they are also shining a light onto an unsavoury part of the local town - somewhere that she avoids. As the present starts to blow up with Cain and Eton at her side they all try to stay alive as bodies start to drop all around them.

This was certainly an action-packed instalment of the series as they started to make progress on the mystery of who was after the team but it came at a cost for Petra as her past and present life unravelled as associated parts of the story became clear. I loved the way that Cain and Petra were both determined to get to the bottom of things that affected their own lives and were determined to survive no matter how devastating the information was. I have to say I admire Petra who coped with betrayal after betrayal and hit after hit but did not crack in her need to know what had and was happening. That proved to me that Cain and Petra really did belong together. Well written and easy to read and understand. I definitely read this book faster as I needed to know what was going to happen next. Contains a very small amount of sexual content at the end of the book.

This is the 2nd book in the captivating " Bullard's Battle" series.
Ballard was still missing and two of his team, Ryland and Garret, were still recovering from their injuries, the words whispered into Cain's ear "you're next" resulted in Cain and fellow team member Eton Durham going dark in Switzerland to gather intel and work out a strategy, someone wanted to wipe out Bullard's security team and they were good, who were they and why ?
The intel took them to a small town in Sicily, they booked in to a small B&B run by meek Pedro and his waspy, bitchy wife Migi, they were helped by their scientist niece Petra who paid them to look after her father who had been senile since a car accident.
The atmosphere in the town was strange with an undercurrent of danger.
They had killed Chico but they needed to search his house for clues, Petra proved helpful in their search but what they found was to shock them all.
The body count was escalating, they needed to take out this team before took them out, they needed to find Bullard.
A gentle love blossomed between Petra and Cain and he would protect her with his life, they used all their resources and friends in high places.
This story is action packed, people are not who they seem, it is full of surprises, it has murder, kidnapping, intimidation, police corruption to name but a few, this is a real page turner.

This story is definitely a page-turner!

This is the second book in Dale Mayer’s new series, Bullard’s Battle. In her first book, Bullard and two members of his team are shot down during on a mission. The two team members are found floating in the middle of the ocean when they were seriously injured in the crash. Their leader, Bullard, has disappeared and cannot be found anywhere.

The second book begins several weeks later. Cain Bestrow, and his partner Eton, are sent to Malta after they receive a lead. They are looking to see who is after them since the whole team is in danger. Plus, they are still looking for Bullard.

The two men are staying at a Bed and Breakfast. They are picked up by Petra who is the niece of the owners. The owners of the place are odd, and the wife is very unfriendly and antagonistic. Petra’s disabled father lives there, and is taken care of by the owners

I can’t go further into the plot without giving away too much information and, thereby, ruining the story. Suffice it to say that the book starts with a loud “boom,” and the action doesn’t stop until the very end.

This plot is complex, convoluted and often confusing. There is plenty of action, intrigue, mystery and danger to satisfy anyone who loves thrillers. And there are slews of “bad guys” that readers will love to hate.

Even though there is a larger plot that carries over from book to book, this book has an ending to the storyline that is highlighted in this book.

Bullard is still missing and his whole team plus Ice and Levi are still looking. From the last events at the museum, the information found on one of the goons with Green leads to Sicily so that's where Cain and Eton go.

Instead of being met by Pedro, they are met by Petra. She informs them that she is the niece of the proprietors of the B&B where they will be staying.

Since they arrived late they are invited to join the family for dinner. There's quite a bit of hostility here especially with Petra's aunt. They gain some information at that time, but decide to take a walk around town before dark.

Things get more intense with every page, starting with a body and progressing to more, bodies that is.

Petra is smack in the middle of all of this as are her aunt and uncle. In what capacity she and the guys aren't sure yet. The verbal sparring between Petra and Cain is fun, informative and leads to all sorts of interesting conclusions.

Cain and Petra have quite the chemistry but it takes a while for them to figure it out.

Suspense, intrigue, surprises and some sizzle as Cain and Eton get just a bit closer to who is after them all.

Couldn't put it down until I found out what happened.

Another explosive book in this new series. This time it's Cain. We met him in the last book as one of the survivers from the plain crash. This time he is on a trip to Italy to pick up a source from one of the guys they caught before. They meet Petra and it all goes down hill from there. With her father comatose but awake in his body, Petra pays her aunt and uncle to care for him whist she is at work. There are huge questions hanging over a lot of things that need to be sorted out. Her sister, her father, a son dead and 2 gone bad and now trouble with her aunt and uncle sees Petra, Cain and Eton dealing with someone who wants them dead.

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I knew I was going to enjoy this series by damn it's good. When you read a book with very few breaks you know you are in for an adventure. I loved Cain and Petra as the the two leads and everything just seemed to come together. With the who's and why's and know how. I can't wait for Eton's book. I am counting down the days until I get to read Bullard's story.

With the warning 'You're next' out of the dying mercenary's mouth, Cain and Eton go to a small town in Sicily to discern who was behind the orders to take out Bullard's team. Cain and Eton book rooms at Pedro and Migi's B&B and Miri's niece Petra picks them up at the airport. Petra doesn't like doing the pickups, but Pedro and Miri are taking care of Petra's father. Cain soon realizes that Petra's knowledge of the town and its people are a real asset. Cain's investigation soon puts Petra in danger, but she also faces danger from another source. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is another suspenseful book in this series. I love that Petra is such a strong and intelligent woman. I also love how quickly Cain realizes the threat of danger to Petra and wants to keep her safe. While this is mainly a suspenseful story, I am glad to see the start of a romance between Petra and Cain. This is a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next one.

This is an exciting action packed suspense filled story with romance as a bonus. While part of Bulliards team recovers from attack another part continues the search for Bulliard.Cain and Eton are in Switzerland trying to find information on who could be behind the threat .They think they are heading in the right direction and travel to Italy getting met at the airport by a beautiful woman named Petra .her uncle an aunt own the B&B. She's not really sure if she trusts the two men when they say they are in security she thinks CIA or something. The story will pull you in and keep you on the edge of your seat an the characters are captivating. The chemistry between Cain an Petra is sizzling hot off the charts. There is none stop suspense an action. There are so many twists an turns to this story you will be riveted until the very last page an leave you begging for more. I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes an you can feel their emotions an their pain. I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.

Cain and Eton are off to Sicily to follow up on some leads on a killer who was one of the men who attacked Bullard and two of his employees. Bullard is still missing and his men are determined to find him if he is alive and to protect everyone who has become targets. The killer has family and a history in Sicily. So Cain and Eton are going to a Bed and Breakfast near this family to search for answers. They are about to discover more than they bargained for. Upon landing they are met by Petra, the niece of the owners of the B&B. This story begins and doesn't end until there is a lot of action, suspense, surprises and fighting for their lives. The story stays in the Village where, at first, it is difficult to see how much corruption there is at play. Never a dull moment! It's filled with action and, of course, a love interest. All in all, a great read!
The epilogue talks of Eton being sent to Switzerland to join his team and follow more leads. The search goes on.

More puzzle pieces come to light as Eton and Cain travel to Sicily to ferret out who tried to kill Bullard and two other members of Bullard's team. Cain and Eton book a stay at a B&B that has ties to a suspect they are hunting when they suddenly find themselves in a town rich with family strife, poverty, and unlawful police. The innkeepers have a niece, Petra who finds herself caught up in the middle of Cain's mission and things go from bad to worse and the hits keep coming for Petra. She is a strong character and seems to handle whatever is thrown at her. I admire that because I would have fallen apart. As the clues unfold Cain and Eton realize just how far-reaching this all is. Can they find the clues before they are taken out?

I like this series because while each book can be read as a stand-alone, each character's story is tied to the previous book in some way. I can't wait to see what is next for Eton as he travels to the next country to find more strings to pull.

Cain's Cross by Dale Mayer
Bullard's Battle Series Book Two
Cain Bestrow and Eton head to Sicily to check out where one of the men had attacked them. A now dead man. After the plane was tampered with Ryland, Garret, and Bullard crashed. Bullard was still missing. And one of the gunmen had said Cain was next. Well, Cain wasn't going to sit around and wait for death.

Petra Mirkonoc's life was not good. The town she lived in was dying...full of thugs. Her sister has been missing for eighteen months, the same time that her father was in an accident and now just lived halfway between recovery and permanently gone in his mind.

Cain and Eton came to town to find out more about Chico, one of the dead men. They are finding out plenty. And, Cain is finding out that he keeps getting pulled toward Petra. Especially as he feels the need to protect her.

Dramatic and intriguing, non stop villains that just seem to be everywhere. It seems this supposedly quiet town is nothing but bad guys either in cahoots with each other or trying to outdo them. The team have their hands full trying to figure out the connections to their own case while also helping Petra with her family. All leads to an intense climax and eventually a lead into the next stage, along the way the expected romance blossoms and another guy off the market. I did feel at times as though this was going in to many directions and had a lot of extremely unstable characters which did have it a bit unbelievable and far fetched, but it's fiction so I guess the license is allowed to stretch the imagination. It's a great read with interesting characters, some easy to like, but this isn't my favourite story from the author. Started 25/1/21 finished 26/1/21

Bullard's team is following the clues to find out who blew his plane out of the air and why that person wants them all dead. So Cain and Eton have traveled to Switzerland. Now they are headed to Sicily to see what they can find out about Chico, one of the men involved in the setup at the museum in Australia. However, once there, they find there is more going on than just the answers they are searching for.

Petra, the niece of the couple who own the B&B where they are staying, picked them up at the airport and shows them the house where Chico grew up. The intrigue of what is going on in the town starts with many twists along the way. You won't be able to anticipate all that will happen in this story, other than another guy meeting his girl. Since Cain was injured and needs to rehab, he gets to spend time with Petra while Eton follows the next clue and goes back to Switzerland.

I really enjoyed reading Cain's Cross . Cain Bestrow and Eton Duran both are tracking the history of the killer that was after some of his team members and his boss . They are trying to find who is behind the attempts to kill their group . They find themselves headed to Sicily .
To gain more answers at least they hope . Petra picks the men up at the Airport and drives them to her family's Bed and Breakfast . Soon things get intense . Secrets come out .Petra finds her life in turmoil and definitely danger . Cain and Petra find themselves drawn together with all the chaos going on around them .
Maybe some good will come out of all the devastation . This story is full of suspense , deceit , action danger and definitely intrigue . I highly recommend taking the time to read .

Cain and Eton are on a mission to find out who sabotaged the plane that Bullard was on. Two team members made it off the plane but Bullard is still among the missing and assumed dead. Whoever sabotaged the plane is now trying to takeout all the team members. After a tip Cain and Eton to to the town that Chico is from hoping to find some answers. They stay at a B & B that Petra's aunt and uncle own. There are a lot of unusual things going on and a lot of undercurrents. Through it all Cain and Petra form a bond.
The search is still on to find out what happened with Bullard's plane. Perhaps the next book in the series will give a few more clues.

When Cain chases a lead to Sicily with Eton, he meets Petra, the niece of the owners at their B&B. All is not well in this small town, corruption all around, secrets, murder and greedy relatives has Petra sticking by Cain as he tries to find a link between a man killed in the last book and the bombing of a plane where Bullard is still missing. Bullard’s team is being hunted and they need to find who is behind the attempts and why.
A great read with some steam, suspense, secrets, murder, some action and twists and turns. I enjoy the no drama between the couple and how easily they get along. Good characters and pieces slowly filling in as to who did it.

The entire team finds themselves in jeopardy as one member is missing, two members are hurt and the rest have to uncover who is behind the attacks before it is too late. Cain and Eaton have received their mission which leads them to Italy and what part a Bed & Breakfast’s family may plan in the whole scenario.

Due to her father’s condition Petra not only needs to help her family at the Bed & Breakfast but work as well. All that she was supposed to do was pick up Cain and Eaton for their stay however things take a turn when she becomes part of the investigation and the revelations will rock her world!

Romance, witty banter and intrigue as Cain and Petra take us on a wild ride as some mysteries are solved and leave us wanting more of this entertaining series.

I loveeeee this easy-to-read page-turner suspense romance, in fact this one is my favorite from this series so far.
Murder in every corner, family affair, crazy small-town, bad people everywhere, yup so many bad things happened, but then there's sparks between Cain and Petra that added the sweetness and brings the warmness. The camaraderie between Bullard's team and Ice definitely my favorite, I loveeee the team work, I just love when these teams support each others and always readily lend a hand when somebody needs help. So yes, overall I really really love it.
Great story, loveable wonderful characters, great actions, I'm absolutely recommended for a light suspense romance readers.

Assassin's or garden variety sickos?

Petra lives in a quiet, sleepy town but she soon realises that hidden just below the surface is a writhing pit of darkness filled with vipers and the worst of humanity. Nobody is as they seem and when she is confused, bewildered and overwhelmed the only person that makes her feel safe is the mysterious, dark, dangerous stranger staying in the B & B.
They are still searching for Bullard, uncovering more puzzle pieces about who is targeting them and reeling from their losses but they are more determined than ever...a dark and twisted investigation for the team this time but can they get any closer?

What a great read that immediately captivated me and kept me glued to the book from start to finish with engaging characters you want to know more about and an action packed story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the attraction and undeniable chemistry between Cain Bestrow who arrives in Sicily looking for more information on the ones attacking Bullard's team and Petra Mirkonoc who picks him and Eton up at the airport. I look forward to the next book in the must-read Bulllard's Battle series. I received an advance reader copy of "Cain's Cross" and am voluntarily leaving my review. Cain and Eton don't know what they will find out on this trip but boy they get way more than they bargain for as does Petra when she picks them up but boy am I glad they all meet! Petra is a wealth of knowledge on the area as well as who they are looking for but also has a lot going on for herself with a missing sister, unwell father and an Aunt and Uncle who will shock you. There is betrayal, anger, some answers, more questions, action and a good dose of attraction that had me needing to know where things would go next and some of the twists you come across are just well a little mind blowing!

Dale Mayer writes intense, emotional, complex and thrilling romance and this second books of Bullard's Battle series is a shining example of her wordsmithery!! The story was such a spectacular one, with so many twists, turns, hot moments and an abundance of sitting on the edge of my seat, yelling at my iPad and author. I was completely immersed in the story that when the ending crept on me, I was disappointed, not because I didn’t like where it ended, but because it ended and I wanted to keep reading. Need the next book right now. Please!! So go one click this book today, you won’t regret it, I promise. Happy reading everyone!!

Cain and Eton are desperately trying to find out who is after their team and why. They find a connection to one of the dead men which brings them to a B&B in a small town run by an older couple. The couple's niece Petra is also on hand. Turns out most of the town is populated with unsavory characters. The dead man's family is by far the worst of the bunch. The more they find out the more dangerous it becomes. Dead people keep turning up. The story is really fast paced and the characters are really nasty except for our heroes! Just a touch of romance. Second book in what promises to be a great series.

You can't choose your family but you can choose your friends.

Cain and Eaton are on the hunt for the person who hired the hit men to kill Bullard and the rest of their team. They are supposed to be met at the airport by Pedro who owns the B & B they are going to stay at. Only the person holding the sign with their names on it isn't Pedro but his niece Petra. Her aunt insists she stay for dinner as she is nervous about the two strangers. Right away Cain feels something is off about the families relationship toward one another and they have a connection to one of the dead hit men.

Hang onto your seats, there is plenty of action, danger, killings and betrayals. Cain and Eton have gone to Sicily to get info on who is trying to kill off the team. He meets Petra and the B&B they will be staying at. There are different scenerios going on in this story they weren't expecting, besides what they were there for. Cain and Petra get their HEA, but Eton is on his way to his next assignment in finding out who done what. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Cain is up now for his mission trying to find who wants his team dead and why kill Bullard. Heading to Sicily to follow up a lead, Cain with Eton head to a little town where things just dont feel right. At the B&B they are staying at actually starts with the transport from airport with Petra. Just chin wailing they slowly find out more but this brings alot more forward issues they must face before moving. This is the start of a fast pace story which becomes a love story. the second book in this series can not wait for the next one. Love this story.

This book should be entitled Petra;s Crosses to bear. From the beginning of the story when Petra picked up Cane and Eton from the airport her life begins to crumble. One thing after another causes this young woman to re-think what is true. Cain is her rock even though she only met him hours ago. Cain lends her his strength and all of the info he can obtain. He also protects her when necessary. Intriguing, jaw dropping story.

I still want to know what happened to Bullard, guess we'll find out eventually. This story picks up after book 1 with Cain and Eton on the hunt for the bad guys in Europe. A town with a lot of evil going on. Murder aplenty and the blame pointed every which way. Petra seems the only innocent one here, she's helping the guys as her family members fall victim to suspicious circumstances.
I didn't really feel the chemistry between Petra and Cain but they make a good couple in horrid times.
I really enjoyed the plot, great story.
