On the darkest day, in the darkest hour, when all hope has been extinguished, a hand will draw the one true sword, and a lost throne shall be reclaimed...
Generations of De Montfort women have protected the sword in the stone. Gwen is the last of them, following in the footsteps of her grandmother, Moscelyne.
But the sword has now been drawn, and the new Witch King may well be working with Darkside.
Now the race is on to find the missing artifacts that will stop the king accessing the full power of the sword. But as the attacks escalate and the fractured clues of history are slowly pieced together, Gwen, Mo, and Luc Durant-the motorbike-riding warrior from an ancient order of knights-quickly realize all is not as it seems. Worse still, the true source of the plot to unleash Darkside and restore witch rule is far closer to home than any had guessed.
But as new prophecies rise, and the truth of the sword in the stone becomes clear, another race begins. One that will end with a crown, a throne, and the fate of all England as its prize.
Keri Arthur, author of the New York Times bestselling Riley Jenson, Guardian series, has now written more than 25 books. She's received several nominations in the Best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Awards, and recently won RT's Career Achievement Award for urban fantasy. She lives in Melbourne with her daughter and two crazy dogs
Book 2 shows Gwen's powers increasing, tapping into areas that were previously not revealed and boy is this becoming exciting!
It's obvious that there is going to be some kind of showdown and to be honest I am not looking forward to it considering who it is going to be between but the showdown that I am looking forward to involves Luc... hot Luc ha ha!
Another great series from the wonderful Kerri Arthur, a series I am looking forward to reading more of!
Now Gwen and Mo strongly suspect the culprit, but Gwen is still in denial!
The action is non stop and all of them, as soon as they solve something, find themselves in a much worse position!
Luc is still in denial too. He admits that there's defintely something that liks him to Gwen, but his honor is still stronger than anothing else! Wake up, Luc!!!!
Mo has begun disclosing some of the mysteries surrounding both her and Gwen's family, but she still keeps something hidden...
I love every book Keri writes. There is no exception here. The story is written so well. You get so into the story. I wasn't ready for the story to end.
I should have learnt by now that picking up a Keri Arthur book on a week night would be a bad idea. Couldn't but it down and June can't come fast enough!
Another fun installment. One that, if not directly correcting all of my issues with the first one, at least tried to explain many of them away. It did feel like there was perhaps a little too much running around with no progress to show for it though.
I'd have liked a few more moments with Gwen speaking and bonding to those around her. Getting some answers from Mo, not just about all this witch king stuff, but just about who her parents were and the De Montford family in general, etc.. Have her actually getting to know Luc as a person and not an object of fate bound lust, his likes and dislikes, and what keeps him going as a Blackbird other than his sense of failure over the Woman in Red. Or simply reaching out to friends and family and quietly telling them that shit is about to hit the fan and they need to be ready for all of Darkside to break loose!
Still, I do look forward to reading the 3rd one soon. Glad I don't have to wait very long.
Well, the players all laid their cards, I think. Including the person whom Gwen and Mo suspected to be the one planning to take the three Witch King artifacts - sword, ring, crown - in order to let witches and Witch King to rule again (rather than human king)
In the first book, the Darkside managed to kill the remaining potential heirs. In this book, the focus is to secure the royal ring first so they can find the True Sword, Elysian, and stop the evil plan of Witch King resurrection. The book is fast paced, with one action over another. And of course, Gwen discovers more of magic inside herself
I think this is a trilogy series, and based on the cover of the third book, as well as the title, . I'm sure it will still offer an exhilarating adventure an a climax final battle. Can't wait to get my hands on that book come June.
Oh this series just gets better and better. Blackbird Luc is helping Gwen and her many times great grandmother Mo search for the witch that is working with Darkside demons, dark elves and halflings in an effort to become the Witch King. They discover the identity of the witch, as well as learn much more about the plot and all the players. With attacks on their lives coming fast and furious, they must use their friends and every resource they have to win through. Gwen is coming into her abilities and power more and more and learning just how much her grandmother Mo has kept from her about how old she is and what she’s capable of as well. Her relationship with Luc is destined, or so Mo says, but although Luc wasn’t convinced, he’s started to come around a bit. With a suspenseful and action filled conclusion, the battle is won, but the war continues. I can’t wait to read the next installment to see what happens next.
I enjoyed the first book in the series and I enjoyed this one too! I am so glad this series was recommended to me. I am a Keri Arthur fan so I am so happy she has taken on this theme. I have always been fascinated by King Arthur, add in paranormal and this is my type of thing. I love this concept and the changes made to the myth to make it it's own. I love the characters and I do feel for Gwen and the choices she will have to make in the next book. I am definitely looking forward to the next book and seeing what happens with Gwen and Luc, if the Mages arrive and answers to why this is all happening.
Well...Gwen and Mo got quite the rude awakening in this one . I hated what they found out and what they are going to have to do about it. The good thing is that they will be up to the task and have great people helping them out, but it still won't help the heartbreak that will eventually happen when they do the right thing. Hopefully there will be two bright spots at the end to help get them past things.
So much action and excitement! I love the historical aspect of this story tied into magic, witches, demons and so many more of the supernatural! The story is dark and unexpected but has the reminiscent tale of King Arthur in the background. Amazing characters and a slow romantic underlying between Gwen and her Blackbird. Such a great tale that sucks you in!
Keri you rock This audio was fabulous AGAAIN this series I would say is a NA fantasy. Romance is definitely secondary, however there is movement in this one between mmc and fmc
I love a good Australian narration. 4 star listen, I’m looking forward to the third book being put on audio. Should be started within the next few months according to Keri so many the end of 2022.
Personally I think I prefer this series to Lizzie Grace.
Blackbird Broken is the latest novel to come from Keri Arthur, and is the second novel in The Witch King Crown series. It's an Arthurian retelling like I've never seen before, with plenty of twists along the way.
For centuries Gwen's family has been tasked with protecting the sword in the stone. Now that sword is gone, and there is evil threatening to take over at every turn. Yet Gwen is staying strong, with the help of her great-grandmother Mo, and newly found allies such as Luc.
All of whom have already given up so much for the sake of this quest, and who will likely lose even more before it is all said and done.
“Part of me wished they'd just attack and get it over with. I hated waiting.”
Guys, I have been waiting all year for Blackbird Broken, and I couldn't be happier to finally have it in my hands! Lately I've been getting kind of sick of all the Arthurian retellings out there (there are a lot these days), but Keri Arthur's version has had me captivated from the start, with plenty of creative twists along the way.
On that note; holy cow. This book gets dark. Granted, Blackbird Rising got pretty dark at times too, so that isn't terribly surprising. What is surprising is what actually occurred within these pages. Which is to say, a lot. There were times where it broke my heart, and times where I found hope building up again. Not to mention my curiosity. I had so many questions and theories about what was going on, and for that reason alone I was pretty satisfied by the way things went towards the end of this novel.
“Maybe, an inner voice whispered. He's not the person you grew up with. Not anymore.”
Of course, the bad side to finishing the book is that I now have to wait another year to read the next one. Though I personally have no doubt that it will be worth it. Basically, I think I'm trying to say that I've loved every book that Keri Arthur has written since I discovered her a few years ago. Her series have been so unique and such a breath of fresh air. Can't wait to see what she thinks up next!
I remember when I finished the first book, I thought I would die waiting for this one. This is possibly one of the most unique stories I've ever read. It is sensational. Keri Arthur is always a good read. The plot, characters, magical world is tightly and beautifully written and you can't help but fall into this. Lots of action and great lore all through this. I now must wait till next year for the conclusion, I still feel like I may just die waiting to see how everything ends. There was some great uncovering in this, I loved it. Gwen and her grandma Mo, are wonderful characters as are all the secondary ones. Outfreakingstanding!!!!
I don't normally start books if the series isn't complete, so major fail here. The next book was available pre-order which is good. I like the fact that these are set in England and the places mentioned are familiar to me. Good characters and a new telling of an old tale. Written well with plenty of intrigue and sexual chemistry though the roof.
Book 2 is often just a setup for book 3 and this case is no different. Most modern day trilogies would be better as a duology and more editing but this one holds up better than others and is worth it to get to book 3.
Many small side plots were fun capers (soul soldier meeting) but unnecessary to Gwen's development as a character. It was also tiresome as she nearly dies a bunch with little consequences because Mo heals her. I strongly thought Mo would be killed by the end of this book so Gwen could actually grow into her destiny. Think Harry Potter and Dumbledore ... Gwen's personality is basically to worry and so then she relies overmuch on Mo's non-answers to comfort her. It's a drag on the reader. The banter is basically "I'm worried but what if" and then Mo tells her "smart girl you have my genes but don't worry so much". This doesn't show a woman learning self reliance over her decision making. I did appreciate the growing connection to her daggers but again this could have been done with an introspection/fight training montage, preferably with Luc, rather than 650 pages of escalating (but boring) threats since she always gets healed. If this was 300 pages it would have read much better but I just pretended I was watching a TV show, each chapter was a small repetitive episode with small crawling plot advancement. Grid will increase your enjoyment of the action and 'banter'.
A big miss for me is the fact that her brother is involved with the Evil Side and no time in the book is given as to why and why so many witches are agreeing to work with demons against the current status quo. The witch king cannot be the only rallying point for a community of witches to turn bad at these numbers. This is a huge fail in this world building. The motivation for sides should be clear (Harry Potter did this well).
A big win is casual nudity. Gwen is 30 something, I think, and has a sexual past. The burn is slow with Luc but it fits this plot of doomed lovers. Sometimes this love denied gets heavy handed by the writer but this was well done for book 2. I was hoping Luc was actually Lancelot and not just is soul reborn. I thought that the woman in red was actually Gwen dying in a past life....but seems like this isn't the case...I wish because it adds a lot of weight to Luc choosing duty time and again over Gwen. It would make him choosing THIS Gwen much more difficult to believe because he never has before. Would have been my creative choice, anyways. Perhaps Luc is a soul soldier too and so really is the OG Lancelot - would be a sneaky reason for introducing that lame soul soldier side plot where they never did get an answer from the ancients.
I hope the final book renders Mo out of the action (a centruy long coma?!) so Gwen can grow and I hope we can understand why all these witches are betraying their clans and want to work with Max... and why his world is better than the current one and entices followers. (Death Note is a good example of this).
Please take the time to make book 3 great.
Ps. Less earth magic please. It's also a bit repetitive and boring.
There is a lot to learn here. We finally get some answers to things that are happening. Though, we are still wondering why the "Heir" did what they did. And that confrontation is yet to come, and likely will be a rough one with what we learn at the end of this book.
Gwen is progressing in her power and how to yield her daggers. It's something new yet Mo has an idea of what's happening. With this progress, we learn with Gwen why it works this way. And more about the Sword of the King.
Speaking of Mo. I love her! She's Gwen's grandmother...many grandmothers removed, but all in all she's the grandmother. I love their relationship. They seem similar in many ways. They don't cut each other any slack either. They have reasons for what they do, and share it. They also respect each other greatly. I love that Mo has trust and faith in Gwen and her abilities, feelings, and more. There's no coddling or telling Gwen she's wrong.
We see Luc again too. He's come along in the idea of a relationship. But that will have to wait until after work is done. He's come along in trusting Gwen in her abilities too. And he's there to support her when she's used the daggers to the point of severe pain. He's becoming a good partner for Gwen.
And we are at the end of the book and I want to know why....how is the "Heir" going to react... and so much more. I'm so so glad that all three books are out! :D
Gwen continues her quest to find what is going on with the king’s sword, the ring and who is really behind all this troubles. Her grandmother Mo is a force to be reckon with and she leads on in the investigations. Luc supports and protects Gwen without falling in the often used trope of being a suffocating, super alpha man. He has deep reasons for taking it easy in his approach to Gwen and I respect that. Gwen is fabulous in her assertiveness and in not playing silly head games with him. She is clear that she wants him and tells him in no uncertain words. Bravo! My heart breaks as Gwen realizes who is the mastermind of all the nefarious plans to obtain the sword and bring forth the kingdom of darkness. She is debating on what to do and I can’t think of how she will resolve this in the next book. Off to the next book…
This is the second book in Keri Arthur's Blackbird series. These are not stand alone books but need to be read in order. It's difficult to write a review without spoilers for either book.
Gwen deMontfort, her 'grandmother' Mo, and their allies continue to fight against the Dark forces which are trying to regain the throne of England for witches. It is becoming clear that the Dark has been planning an incursion for a very long time - certainly longer than Gwen's lifetime. The Witch King is supposed to rise when the Dark forces arise but just who IS the Witch King? and what happens if the Witch King is allied to the Dark?
This is an action packed volume that I was riveted to. I'm just about to look for the next to find out what happens.
This series is a unique take on the tale of Excalibur and King Arthur. . Keri Arthur has a fantastic writing style, which I have fallen in love with. She brings her characters to life and makes you feel like you are in the moment with them. . In the Witch King's Crown Trilogy we are following a witch called Gwen, a witch that is also a shifter and can take the form of a Blackbird. Her grandmother is a mage, one of the most powerful magic users in centuries. Gwen also has a powerful soulmate connection to Lucas, one that has over centuries ended in heartbreak.
The Demons are coming, Gwen has been betrayed by her own blood. She has no choice but to do what needs to be done.
I am a fan of Keri Arthur, but this book just didn’t do it for me. The pacing seemed off. Parts were too slow for me and too much detail that I found I drifted off listening to it. I was really hoping the romance side in this book would pickup as it was missing in book one, but sadly it didn’t. The over all storyline is still interesting and I am still curious how it will end, but just wondering if the series needed to be stretched out over many books. Love the narrator, she is fantastic. Katherine Littrell.
Keri does it again. Pulls you into the story. I find her paranormal world fascinating. She does a magnificent job of using the real world and adding her paranormal one into it as natural as it it were real. Perhaps there is something there that we can't see.
Wanted to love this series. I picked this up and put it down so many times. I like the premise of the story. Unfortunately, I didn’t like any of the characters. And I know that this author does a lot of romance, but where she put it in just felt disjointed and hurt the plot line in my opinion . I found myself annoyed by the romance, rather than cheering them on.
I absolutely LOVE Keri Arthur but I am not a huge fan of this series :( I can't put my finger on exactly what the problem is but it has taken me forever to read this book. I could only handle a few pages at a time. It was just boring to me and I couldn't get into it. It picked up a little at the end but this is definitely not one of my favorites. I will still read the conclusion.
Previous book foreshadows the possible becoming possible. While I'm still not sure I'm okay with the apparent break in the rules the first book established, nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The contrast in the twins, between the self-sacrifice and the self-serving, started in the first book and becomes a major theme in the second.
This is one of the best books I've read so far. I just couldn't put it down and I loved it! Gwen and Mo are great characters and I enjoy reading about them immensely. Already pre-ordered the third book 🎉
Fast passed adventure. (Not sure if author actually been to some places as time to travel was very quick from Wigan to Waterloo, even if meant crosby . We have motorways not freeways. But didn't distract from story). Want to find out want happens next.
If you are a fan of Arthurian myth, this series is definitely a worthy contender. Arthur hooks you and takes you for an intriguing ride filled with dark elves, myth and legend.
