Rate this book
Ka, half raptor and half man, must undertake three tests to become a member of the elite Icarian Squadron, flyers who dedicate themselves to the destruction of Summia and to an alliance with Imperiana. In order for him to succeed, he must first overcome his own fears, but in the process, he discovers how Imperiana has manipulated the trials and Ka's own emotional needs. Captain Harriman, under Imperial command, is ordered to make sure the fledgling flyers bow to Imperiana's control. Will Ka be able to survive the trials and become an Icarian as his father was in the first war between Imperiana and Summia, or will his failure lead to disgrace and exile from the Rookery?

Not my usual genre, but I've been trying to step out of my comfort zone - with this very short book, I was fairly happy with doing so!
I struggle with fantasy novels with strange names and weird places and I do wonder at the authors amazing imagination.
I began this book with an open mind and within four chapters I was a tad annoyed at how women were portrayed, but persevered, and then the book ended!! It is a short novella to introduce the characters for the next book, which I presume will be longer?
It is well written, it has a story which for some may find interesting, I however, did not. It is too short for me to be able to tell you anything really about it, save that it is like the first few chapters of a book, the beginning, but then abruptly stops, so unless I buy the next book, I'll never know the story. I struggle with these type of stories. If I buy a book, I expect a full story, with beginning, middle and ending, not left hanging. When I bought the book, I did not know this was merely an introduction, so I felt a bit annoyed at this.
However, if you're willing to buy the next book to find out the continuation, then this first instalment is okay if you enjoy fantasy.

I loved reading about Ka in Patch Man. It was fun learning more about him in this short story.
