With that out of the way, let's begin. This is the blah, blah, blah section. You know the author’s “glory page” where he gets to tell you grandiose things about himself and the deeper meaning of his work. Whatever.
I write books. Seriously, that's what I get to do every day. It's great.
I have been fortunate to author some that have achieved bestseller status, including The Hunters Series of mystery suspense thrillers. It took me a lot of years to get to that point, but I wouldn't trade any of them for a minute. I love writing books for you and the journey that brought me here.
I am a native of the south, Georgia specifically. I spent much of my life there, but I have lived in many other places as well. We moved a lot when I was young. Eventually, we ended up back in Georgia in my teens where I finished school and went to work.
I wanted to write from an early age. A really long time ago, when I was still a young police officer in Georgia, I was writing short stories in my spare time and sending them off to magazines. One day I received one back in the mail.
Life Happened
Attached to it was a nice handwritten letter from an editor (this was long before the days of email and texts). The story manuscript was folded and smudged, and there were coffee cup rings on the edges of a couple of pages, which told me they had actually read it, maybe discussed it around an editorial table, or just used it to sop up the coffee.
In her letter, the editor said a lot of things that I don't remember, but it was not the usual form letter that I was accustomed to receiving. It was original and personal.
She said they liked my story, had strongly considered it for publication, but that it wasn't quite believable. Disappointed as I was, I was struck by her last words to me..."Don't stop writing. You're good at this. We almost bought this one."
I remember staring at that a long time. Then I folded it up and tucked it in a file and...stopped writing.
I wish I could tell you a different story, but I can't. I stopped writing for many years.
There were lots of reasons. Yes, I was disappointed, but the letter that should have encouraged me not to give up was forgotten.
Life happened. Dreams of writing were pushed aside by other things...important things.
Mostly I needed money for my young family. In the 1970s, police officers in Georgia were not paid a lot even by the standards of the day. I worked part-time jobs whenever I wasn't working at the police department. Many weeks I had no days off at all.
I'm not unhappy that I did my best to take care of my family. It was the right thing to do and working for them was the joy of my life.
Children grew up; then grandchildren came along. More life happened.
Then...The Internet Appeared
Out of the blue, this thing called the internet appeared and guess what. I was at a point in life when I didn't need to work part-time jobs every spare minute of the day. I could write again.
It's different these days. I can publish a book whether I convince an agent or editor to read it or not. I am an independent writer/publisher, an “Indie.”
It’s a partnership between us, writer and reader, and it's a marvelous thing.
Don't be a Follower -- Make Your Dream Real
It took many years to get here. Life is like that, with lots of twists and turns and surprises. I like it that way.
Now, I write every day, so here's my parting advice. Don’t follow your dreams. Followers get nowhere except up the backside of the person in front.
I went into this book thinking it was 3rd book of a trilogy. Turns out the author left it open for another trilogy to come. I enjoyed enough to keep reading. It is a mixture of Jack Reacher and the Punisher.
John Sole is still seeking revenge against the cartel leaders that murdered his wife and children but his first objective is to lead them away from Isabella, her son Sandy and his girlfriend Jacinta who all have new identities and a new place to live. He did that by driving all around America making himself visible to the cartel’s street dealers in the knowledge that his sighting would be reported back to the cartel leaders, he also did the odd killing of the dealers just for good measure.
At the location of one of his stops he got involved with the local gangs having been asked by a mother and her father (the Dupart family) to try to guide her son away from joining one of the local gangs. Whilst he is doing this the cartel second in command, Garza, has had enough of Sole and sets out to lure Sole and kill him. Garza is a very clever, relentless and extremely ruthless villain and on the face of it has a great chance of defeating Sole as he has the weight of the cartel behind him, whereas Sole has the odd old acquaintance and some “friends” he picks up on his journey.
The strategies that both Garza and Sole are complex and very smart but how successful they turn out to be you will only find out by reading the book.
It’s a great story really well set out with edge of your seat moments. I really did enjoy it as I have with the Glenn Trust’s books I’ve read. He is a master thriller writer, I can’t say better than that. Best book I’ve read in a while, even better than the last John Sole book I read.
Glenn Trust’s Sole Justice series reminds me a lot of Don Pendleton’s Executioner series, one of my all-time favorite series. In The Executioner series, Mack Bolan wages a one-man war against the American Mafia; in the Sole Justice series, John Sole wages a one-man war against the cartel. I still have the original 39 volume Executioner series in my paperback library and have read them so many times that the pages are falling out. If I had the Sole Justice books in paperback instead of eBooks, their pages would face the same faith.
There really is a parallel between Mack Bolan and John Sole. Mack left his career in the military to wage war on the Mafia which killed his loved ones. John Sole also served in the military before joining the police force and becoming a detective, then resigns from the police force wage a one-man war against a Mexican Cartel when they kill his wife and children. Like Mack, John faces impossible odds where he faces almost certain death and comes out the victor every time.
Target Down is the third book in the Sole Justice series and the best in the series so far. Every book in this series is an adrenaline-fueled, roller-coaster thrill ride. Page burners in which the tension builds to greater heights with each new book in the series. I still have three more books in this series to go and I have them all queued up to read now. I’m off to read book 4, The Ghost now. I’m binging! All I can say is that I sincerely hope that this series doesn’t end when I reach book 6.
Trust hit all the high marks with this one! There is a combination of great character development, lots of suspense, excellent plot flow, and a heck of a conclusion that pulled out all the stops. On top of all that, the author left a thread for more to come without leaving anyone hanging. Well done! This has been one of the best series I've read in ages. You don't want to miss out on it. While each story can be read as a stand-alone, you definitely want to read them in order for the main theme to flow properly.
The story setup is familiar. Protagonist's family killed, on the move, gonna fix the bad guys. The necessary but separate stories along the way were clearly just that and not smoothly disguised as a contiguous adventure. There seemed to be more slack than a hard hitting romp would have. Could use more proofreading. That said, the book moved at an ok pace and carried enough action to make it interesting.
This has been an ongoing game between the former detective and the ruthless cartel that changed his life forever, but will it finally meet it's end? It's definitely not a story that you'll want to miss, but I would highly suggest reading the previous books in the series prior to beginning this one so that you will understand the entire story. A must read series. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
This story introduces a new character from John Sole's past. If you want to find out how it will play a part in the story then you need to read the book.
If you like a lot of action and an interesting plot then this book is for you. Find out why John headed back to Atlanta.
John Sole continues to play cat and mouse with Garza until it comes to a last show down. I won’t reveal any spoilers, but you won’t want to miss this next episode of John’s revenge.
Description, action, plot development - all excellent but outgunned by the author's brilliant character portrayals: all them. John Sole is a friend I must encounter again!
