Maine lobsterman Shawn MacKay is enraptured by a redheaded mystery woman who sings opera on a deserted stretch of beach by the cliffs of Avondale. Every time he gets close enough to say hello, she runs away. His narrative of the beautiful songbird earns lighthearted banter from patrons of the Malarkey, a local tavern and gathering place for those in his trade. Shawn hopes that one day he will finally meet the young woman who has piqued his curiosity.
Colleen O’Malley’s lifelong desire has always been to sing opera. When two pre-teen boys tell her about a cave with great acoustics hidden at the base of the cliffs along the beach strand, she enters alone, oblivious to the dangers of rising tides that could trap and kill her.
When Shawn decides to walk home by way of the beach strand one evening, he has no idea that his decision will change his life. Forever.

Onorato is a creative writer; it seems she doesn’t stick with normal or predictable storylines, the reader is treated to pleasant little surprises. This book has a contemporary setting with a little tabloid journalism vibe thrown in (the family reveal close to the end), but also wrapped in a Christian worldview. The story was interesting and a quick read. How many times do you find a vocal range listed in the title!
Shawn was a fabulous hero; a good employer, good friend, loyal family member, and Christ lover. He was someone you wanted in your corner when in need of help and guidance. Even when it was apparent that he was emotionally invested in Colleen, he speaks truth to her by asking her a question, “Will worrying add a single second to her [Birdie’s] lifespan…?” Then he tells Colleen “relinquish her [Birdie’s] care into God’s Hands & live in Daylight.” It was interesting to see Colleen’s growth and increased maturity because of the experiences she encounters. The secondary characters I enjoyed were Birdie, Jake, and Shawn’s sister Shayna; they added interest and color.
This was a quick, enjoyable read and worthy of your reading time (4.5 Stars).
I found this to be such a beautiful story. Long held painful secrets come to life along with blossoming enduring romance. It’s told with good humour, love and jokes, good mates and ugly situations and best of all forgiveness and love. I needed tissues, you will too. This is a beautifully crafted well written story that took me to another place in the world I’d like to visit.
The Fisherman and the Soprano is a delightful romance between unlikely characters - Colleen, a soprano, and Shawn, a fisherman. The characters are so well developed. I really enjoyed "meeting" Colleen and Shawn. I loved the way their romance developed in this well written book. I read it straight through because I could not put it down. The ending demonstrates unselfish love at its finest. Do not miss this book.
The Fisherman and the Soprano is such a beautiful story about the unbreakable bonds of love. Shawn and Colleen are wonderful couple - the product of their amazing families! Fabulous book!
You will fall in love with the books Irene Onorato writes. She has a warm easy style that lures you in and keeps you reading until the end. Her trope of unlikely matings is entertaining and innovative. Looking forward to more.
I liked parts of the book but it read more like a romantic version of Guffus and Gallant, than the sweet romance I had anticipated. "A good date will open the car door for you and pull out you chair," ect. Not to mention, Colleen was close to her mid twenties. She acted like she was twelve. It took me a while to finish because I kept getting annoyed at the writing.
