This is adequate enough entertainment, but I have to say that I've read far better stories. The conclusion here is predictable. In the end it's just another bad alien story with mediocre characters and passable action. It probably doesn't help that I've read some really amazing scifi lately - so this kind of fell flat for me.
That said, Ray Porter narrates and it was good enough to finish the 3-book series. I think the first book, Final Days, is the best of the bunch. And that's primarily because it's kind of a thriller about missing people and the FBI agent who's out to find them. Beyond that, it just descends into a repeat of every other version of bad aliens take over earth, earth colonists revolt, religious terrorist takes over and runs things, good guys triumph with a side of nice aliens helping. OK. Moving on to the next scifi series that hopefully holds my attention a little better.
FINAL DAYS: ESCAPE BY JT Scott and N Hystad is excellent. The Series is all the 'good adjectives'.
Each book in the trilogy is full of action, angst, wonder and beauty. Each book builds on the original premise and the story of the previous book. Each thought of the series has me pondering even more aspects of the trilogy. I've run out of 'eaches' for now, so..... Can you tell that I really like this series. The flow of the stories makes for easy and relaxing reading even when the action and angst keeps you turning pages until late into the night. Sci-fi, mystery, slow building love, what's not to like. If you like to read you will like this trilogy.
A great conclusion to the Final Days trilogy. Ray Porter did a great job (as usual) in narrating this book, bringing all the characters to life.
Life had quickly turned to crap on the new world. The religious zealot executed a cue and enslaved anyone who would not follow her. The billionaire returns and Andrew and the gang find out who he really is and that he must be stopped. They discover that they are not alone on this planet and try to work with the other aliens to free their people, conquer the leadership, and get out of Dodge.
I got attached to some of the characters and while some died, there was a decent non-cliffhanger ending. While the story is fully wrapped up, there was one sentence in the end that could be a tie-in to a future book if ever Scott found himself in need of money and decided to write another in the series. Good completion to the series - I dislike book series that don't know when to quit.
In the epic conclusion to this story, everyone is in for the fight of their life to survive not just Lewis Hound, but now the religious dictatorship of Shelley Morris, in which she has started the following of Mary, claiming Hound to be their God, and herself to be the new Mary, risen to save them in this new land. Our gang of heroes, Andrew, the retired Marine, Kendra, the FBI Agent, Roland, the genius hacker, Tony, Roland’s side-kick and teen marvel, Valeria, Andrew’s Daughter, who is also a genius and has multiple talents picked up from her Marine Father, and then there are the extra’s, Kerry, Kendra’s Sister, and Eric Keller, who used to be Hound’s right hand man, but in part 2, and in this book, has realised how wrong Hound is, and has switched sides. At the beginning of this story, things look grim, as the “Saints of Mary”, as Shelley Morris’s group has taken to calling themselves, has seized control, is living it up, forcing all the ‘Non-Believers’ to do the hard work, with a diet of oatmeal. If you step out of line, you get shot. This is a story that is told from the point of view of many different characters, giving it a fast, broad spectrum storyline, allowing it to not only shift focus between different aspects of the storyline and different locations, but also looking at different psychological aspects of the story as well. Andrew Millers character has a lot tougher approach to things than does his Daughter, especially when it comes to Tony. This differing contrast of views makes for a really fascinating view of events as they unfold around the camp, especially at times when you read similar events from the points of view of two different characters, and the impact it has on them. The character work is incredibly gritty, realistic and at times, very powerful, as our main characters are thrust from one challenge to the next in their seemingly endless battle to free themselves from not just the dictatorship of the ‘Saints of Mary’, but the tyrannical hold of Lewis Hound. I don’t want to give away spoilers, so I am not going to go into what happens to a great extent, but as discussed in book 2, our heroes have discovered other species on this planet, and in this book, we find out a lot more about these races, who they are, why they are there, and there is a lot more interaction with them. Book 3 is a full-on action packed thriller, from the very first page, to the very end, it is incredible just how much Scott and Hystad have managed to pack into this book. One of the really brilliant things about this book is that most of the questions you have about the story get answered to (well at least the big ones), leaving you satisfied with the ending, and not wondering about a whole bunch of lose story ends that never got wrapped up (I hate it when Authors do that!!) As well as the exceptional character work (which is the true highlight of this book), one of the other really extraordinary parts of this book was the world building, from multiple aspects. The actual ‘world building’ itself was very clever, with the descriptions of the new planet and its environment, the alien nature of the flora and fauna, but the other really creative and clever thing was the aliens. Without going into detail so as to not give away spoilers, I will say that the writing with regards to the different alien species was stunning, and added a real depth to the story. Final Days: Escape is an amazing finish to what has been an outstanding series, Escape does not disappoint, moving along at crazy speeds at some points the action is just spectacular, and you find yourself sitting there with your mouth open in stunned awe at what is happening. There is not just action though, it is thriller, mystery, (a tiny bit of romance), but most of all, it is just all round fun – and an absolute must read!!
Underwhelming ending to an underwhelming series. Struggling with covid for 2 weeks stuck with the audio book version of this trilogy. Honestly, it was not a big help. It really felt like watching a cheap tv show like Walker the Texas Ranger. First book in along while where I said , People get paid for this?Man I could write stuff like this with ease... If you are a wannabe writer, read this trilogy, it will give you confidence in your work, just not a real one. Some things I especially did not like: - The disregard of human life, people just killing for no real reasons...(cos they are BAD mkay?) - The absolute zero amount of character development combined with the clichés makes things dull. - Zero lessons learned, no one is learning from mistakes. SPOILERS AHEAD - There are 3 alien races in this book, all you learn about them in 3 books fits on a single page. No seriously. Random drama is more important. - 1000 scientist on a colony and not a single geek joke - Imagine you a re a scientist colonist. So news bulletin for a single evening: Faith militant rule falling, aliens pillaging your camp, lets evacuate the planet to hitch hike with some random aliens(the ones who just attacked your camp by the way). And people just unite and pack their shit up. Ex-rulers and ruled are united in a fingersnap, all crime forgotten. The plan to just leave the planet ? Everyone is cool with it, no questions asked. no one challenges why leave the planet for the great unknown.
This review covers both the Colony and Escape stories. As I said in my review of the first part of this this trilogy, Scott & Hystad are two of my favorite SF writers. Their stories are fast paced with good characterizations and quality descriptives to give the reader a sense of place. While the apocalypse in the first story seems a bit far-fetched, we learn the story behind that sort in the two subsequent books. I do recommend the series for an entertaining weekend's light reading. There is nothing in the series that strains the ability to suspend disbelief too far though I have a couple of questions. 1: If Hound has spent decades gathering the creme d' la creme of various fields, why do all these people seem to come from one country (U.S.)? 2: If the are only 1000 saved with the idea that they will reconstitute the human race, why do so many seem to be elderly? And the same premise: why would Hound situate these 1000 humans (if indeed is initial purpose was benevolent) in a place that was so hostile to the species? 3: Why is there only one (it seems) expert in each of the fields?
This title lost a star because of the ending. I understand most folks will disagree with me, but I found it to be completely out of sync with both the mood of the series and unbelievably fantastical. This addition to The Rimes Trilogy finds our accidental heroes having to fend off their new alien overlord, forge an alliance with an amphibian race that was also captured, come to an understanding with the alien race of intelligent wolf-bear predators and somehow escape (hence the title) their prison.
The writing remains solid, as one would expect from these authors. Character development, which was a strength of the first two books, is lacking here. And while this is billed as the conclusion of the story, there are many questions left unanswered and a sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I simply can't escape the feeling that the authors grew bored, either of their collaboration or the story and slapped something together to end the series.
Is this a great ending to a series or what? There is so much left to tell if the authors decide to come back at a later date and continue the story. Finally the surviving colonists are in a place where they have no natural predators , there is no dictator to command them and they now have a new set of friends.. and a new life but it came at a great cost. I hope that the authors do decide to revisit this paradise if only to let us know how life evolved for the survivors.. A great series with twists and turns all of which I absolutely enjoyed.
Final Days Escape, 3rd and last in the series. This one moved rather quickly I thought with a few twist and turns along the way. I would like to see a follow up story maybe set 20 years later. It would be nice to see how the rest of humanity and their new found aquatic friends have gotten along. And for the Audible users. Narrated again by Ray Porter, who brings the story and action to life. I have to admit when I started on this journey I was not sure of the narrator. Sometimes the wrong person can through the whole story off, but Ray Porter has done a fantastic job in all three books.
Earth is destroyed and a group of 1000 people have been taken to another planet. They are the best of the best, hand picked by a billionaire. But one man and an FBI and a young computer whiz find them before they take off. The planet is wild and dangerous but this their new home.
I would recommend this series to anyone who loves adventure, mystery, a very small shot of romance, and lots of action that never slows down until the very end.
Wow! this had so much adventure going on. This last book in the series was really hard to put down. Jasper Scott has the most amazing imagination, and I am finding a lot of his books I want to read. I like that he has some standalone books, but you should read the series first, then the standalone since it is either a spin off from a series or a Trilogy to a series. So far; I'm finding that I have not read a bad book by Scott yet. I think he is an amazing writer. I'm not a real fast reader, but I read this one in 4 days.
The ending was not what I would say shocking but I did not see it coming either. I am not sure what other reviewers were talking about. This is a solid series.
People seemed relatable and nothing seemed forced. I would love if this got adapted for TV. I tend to enjoy science fiction that feels grounded in our time and place but also out there as well. Don't get me wrong I like "The Expanse" and a series but that is a different world, a well built world but these books are not so removed from our world, the people are from our world in our time.
Exciting book that develops the scene of a spaceship departing a ravaged Earth with a group of specialist who were kidnapped and brought on board to continue the human species.
The characters involved were not a part of the selected group but accidentally joined as they search for missing children one of whom was the daughter of one of the people.
The narrator did an outstanding job of bringing out the excitement and fear involved in the characters and made the story very enjoyable.
At some point, I got tired of the endless novels with sequels ... ad infinitum.
This is the third book, and the saga ends here.
Well done!
Thid series was captivating from the very first page, with well developed plots and excellently created characters. I love the fact that it ended well for all the protagonnists, through all the twists, turns, and shifts in the plot line.
Well Done, again, and well worth the time to read all three.
The third book continues to show human hope a stride for survival in the face of danger and tells how some individuals are willing to do whatever it takes to hold on power or treat us like their pet by giving make believe speeches and in the end how they will be remembered. I am sure you will enjoy all three books in the series and will read them nonstop. Well done Jasper and Nathan.
I absolutely loved this series , so realistic and loads of excelent twists . How i find it realistic ? Im glad you asked. Every single character dealt with real life issues , not wanting to spoil the stories if you haven't read it , so i'll keep it brief. Hidden love , parental rules , crazy cults , twists and unexpected turns . And suspence in a fast paced 3 book series . So please consider reading all 3 books in the series . Well done Mr. Scott and Mr Hystad.
Great ending to this series. Lots of battles and finding new aquatic alien friends that helped them get away from the one who was supposed to be their "savior." Not to mention the evil Shelly Morris, who got just what she deserved. The planet they landed on seemed to be better than earth. Everyone was relaxed and happy, the first time since they were taken from earth.
No romance and no real swearing.
As for the narration: Ray Porter is one of the BEST!!!
This was a fun entertaining series. (Audible review)
Loved it. The writing style, story, characters, character development and great dialogue throughout.
If you like science fiction you will enjoy this author and narration combo.
The narration was amazing. Rob Porter is brilliant. Everyone gets their own distinct voice and the women sound like women. The aliens even get their own voices.
Decide book. Made big leaps in story line with minimal effort, which makes he step back and think maybe you missed something. I like the way Nathan writes, he seems to have a creative edge to him. I'll read the next book in the series after a few other books (other authors). One thing I can do without is the narrator Ray Porter. He reminds me of the dog in Family Dog. Over enunciates too many words for no reason.
I end up loving this found family and none of them annoy me
This book to me was much better than the second book and very interesting. I love the fact that the family was so tight and the love for each other, I wish they were more stories about they connection together. It made me realize I love found family troupes. love when people from different backgrounds come together and love each other so much stronger than actual siblings and the background story was very good it's very interesting I wish it didn't end or discuss more because I actually like the alien - the bad guy. He was interested I wish I knew more about his world and how much worlds he took over and what was his concept and his thinking behind everything however the book focus on the family which I adore.
I stayed up late, reading as fast as possible, to discover that I was sad when I finished because I wanted more. I throughly enjoyed this entire series and highly recommend it. I love the conclusion and the main characters.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
Enjoyed this trio of books and glad to see resolution. It has a lot of twists when dealing with different aliens and landscapes along with a maniac leader with a Marxist agenda. Even though we lost some good characters I appreciated the continued growth within the tight knit group. Great entertainment
This book was the culmination of the three book series, the characters, Kendra , Andrew , Carrie and all the rest make up a wonderful tale I would highly recommend this story to anyone that has a sense of adventure or even remotely likes sci fi it is awesome and very satisfying I would have liked to see the story continue
The final book of this series ends well, but it is not without unexpected twists and turns. The last non-selected members of the colony have their own stories that are consistent with their character flaws and provide a resolution to the problems. It is entertaining and ha a happy ending.
Interesting, for a while, but I don't want to read any.more.
Better than the prior lead-in book. However, character by character story accounting was stretching the storyline to be a little irritating. Not a bad presentation but death after death got rid of hero's quickly and overall not so believable.
The adventure of our earth being destroyed by someone other than us.and the escape made possible. A great w at to start a story. The compelling dictator who ruled all with no compassion, A love story woven in it all. I think you will enjoy the reading as I have.
Good story with action suspense and excellent characters The series started out great but you have to read them in order And you have to read all three to really enjoy the series. I give 4/5 for each part but all together 5/5 rating. Thank you for reading this
I feel that this book, with its collaboration of authors, was a fantastic read. I especially enjoyed the early part of the book where earth is destroying itself...it was actually scary to me. The stories of the main characters were well written and intriguing. Good job authors! Keep it going!
Loved the series, crime drama, apocalypse, escape, colonization, strange new world to explore with interestingly characters, and of course aliens. And yes, the authors pulled it off in grand style. Well done!
