A friend's missing sister might be the one thing that will blow her off course. Medically discharged from the Navy after crashing her F/A-18 Super Hornet, Talia "Colt" Levin has given herself three months to kick off her new career as an airline pilot. Nothing's going to wreck her plans this time. Not even when a friend asks for her help finding his missing sister. Colt figures it won't take long to track her down, but quickly discovers that Kendra is only one of several women who have vanished in the past year. After stumbling across an FBI investigation into the disappearances, Colt learns the women have been taken for a far darker purpose. When yet another woman disappears, Colt must decide if she's willing to give up her carefully laid plans and dive into a rescue mission. She's flying in unfamiliar territory, and without Navy backup. She's used to hunting people through the skies, not the suburbs. Can Colt save the women without falling victim herself?
Arleigh Jacobs first saw the TV show JAG when she was twelve-years-old, and promptly fell in love. F-14 Tomcats became her obsession, and her dream was to become a fighter pilot. Her biggest heartbreak was learning that the Royal Australian Air Force fleet did not include the Tomcat. Her second heartbreak came when she discovered she didn’t have the stomach for excessive gravitational forces. She now writes about fighter pilots instead of being one, although she still dreams of one day flying in an F-14.
I loved getting to know the characters in Cross Winds. Colt is my new best friend. She is strong, tough, and independent. She is one of those women that you would love to meet in real life. One thing I loved, was that she stayed strong throughout the entire story. A lot of times in novels, you end up getting mad at a strong female character at some point, because she does something that has you saying “oh come on girl!! Don’t be so stupid! Don’t give in now!”. But with Colt, she never gave in, or gave up. The author makes you understand Colt’s mind and has you feeling proud of her, for all she has been through, and still tough as nails. Plus I love her sarcastic personality!
The relationship between Colt and Hawk has you wondering if they will ever be more than platonic roommates and best friends. The protective big brother type, Hawk knows when to push Colt and when to leave her alone. He is the one person, I feel, that Colt truly trusts. They are a team and knows each other’s thoughts. It didn’t matter how dire the situation became, Colt knew without a doubt, that Hawk would have her back.
Cross Winds has you on the edge of your seat. You never know what’s going to happen next. I had no idea where Colt’s path was going to lead her, and was enjoyably surprised many times.
This story takes you on a wild adventure. Helping a friend with a simple favour, turns into a mystery that has Colt channeling her inner Nancy Drew. Fast driving, confrontation, going undercover, kidnapping, airplane chases, and quick thinking; Colt takes us on a life changing journey.
You can tell that the author has done her homework on this one! So many details in this story are not common knowledge. Jam packing Cross Winds with knowledge on things such as; the Navy, airplanes, rehabilitation, medical anomalies, the FBI, and the black market. A lot of little details added in, truly shows you the passion Arleigh Jacobs has for writing. As well as dedication and the extensive research she had to have done to write Cross Winds. This is not your typical book that follows the same old mystery or action novel outline. It has aspects of mystery, action, academic, and intrigue genres.
I can’t wait to read Out Of Options to answer some questions I have from Colt and Hawks past!
And I can’t wait to see what happens next for Colt! #teamcolt
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
In this story, Colt is in Germany looking for her brother when she hears from Hawk that her help is needed. It seems that the sister of one of the patients in the rehab center is missing. Colt returns and then starts the search for Matt's sister. The shelter that she was staying at has not seen her and where she was working as a temp also hadn't heard from her as well. Colt started talking to women out the shelter and followed up with Makenzie who gave her a lead. It sees that more than Matt's sister had gone missing. Eventually she located Matt's sister who told Colt that she had been abducted and almost killed. Colt also discovered that she was an FBI agent looking into the missing women.
As time went by, Colt got more involved in the FBI case and wound up being abducted and also almost killed as well. The sister advised Colt that there was not a lot of time left that the FBI wanted to spend on this case. Colt then made the decision to be bait and provide the evidence needed and also find the women as well. Colt's was again abducted and then wound up at the location where the women were being held.
To learn what type of obstacles Colt had to overcome to bring an end to the search, then you need to read this book.
Discharged Navy pilot agrees to help friends and discovers FBI looking into missing women - 5 stars
Colt would rather be flying than anything else. Her buddy from the service, Hawk, is learning how to use his new legs. They work together to help another veteran whose sister has disappeared from a group home.
The story is engaging and the characters are realistic. The FBI has been challenged with an apparent leak related to their investigation of several missing women. Colt is a natural to be a volunteer undercover agent. Her excellent observations are spot on until she is nearly killed in a dark warehouse.
This quick, action-filled adventure keeps the motive for kidnapping a mystery until late and highlights the resourcefulness of several women trying to stay alive.
The resilience of the Colt and Hawk partnership and different skills they bring to the situation are impressive.
Talia “Colt” Levine and her flying partner are back home and recovering from their wounds suffered when the plane they were flying crashed into a mountainside during a Naval excursion. As soon as Colt is sure that Hawk is fully recovered, she is going to do everything she can to track down her brother Ben.
But a friend asks for Colt and Hawk’s help. His sister, Kendra, has been out of touch, which is very unusual. The last thing he knew was that she was going to a safe house for battered women. And of course, they don’t allow men in there. So Talia goes in to see if she can get any information from the woman in charge. Seems a lot of women have gone missing, but no one seems to have a clue as to why or where they are. And they claim to never have heard of Kendra.
What follows is a hang-on-to-your seat story with lots of twists and turns. Give yourself plenty of time to read this because you’re not going to want to put it down until you’ve read every last word.
Colt is at it again with her friends Hawk & Mitch. The story starts with Colt receiving a request from her long lost brother who goes missing. Colt uses her resources (think dark web) in an effort to find her brother to no avail. she quickly winds up back in the states & embroiled in a case of missing women ... was it a case of sex trafficing? No ... read the book to find out what it actually was ... perhaps even worse. Colt winds up working with the FBI to help solve the mystery & find the missing women. I don't want to include spoilers here so read the book, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommend it. Arleigh Jacobs has given us a great read here. Watch for more Colt adventures.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has a strong willed female lead character who is a former top class navy fighter pilot with the challenging condition of not being able to feel pain and so be aware of potentially serious injuries. Now in civilian life she is asked by her team mate, Hawk, still recovering from injury himself, to help locate a friend's missing sister and her search leads her to uncover something far more heinous than she could have imagined. She puts herself at risk to stop what is happening and rescue those affected. The author introduces characters of real depth and ensures that you want to read future books to see how Team Colt continues.
After reading Out of Options I vowed to read more Colt and Hawk novels. This is the next. Colt and Hawk are no longer in the Navy while Hawk continues his physical therapy. Colt is trying to decide what to do with the rest of her life when a fellow therapy patient and friend of Hawk’s asked him to find his sister. Colt and Hawk start the search and we are off to the races. A little maybe romance, a bit of flying, and lots of action. Read Out of Options if you haven’t already and then read this book Cross Winds.
A great story to start of this series. Talia "Colt" Levin, her main character is portrayed as realistic and human, painted on the page with emotions, flaws, and her own convoluted history. It is a fast-paced read that is powered by non-stop action and a taut, emotional narrative. The many twists and turns in the story make it a real page turner that makes it hard to put the book down.
Thank you to the author who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In the first novel in the 'Team Colt' series Talia 'Colt' Levin and her partner Justin 'Hawk' Halversen are grounded while Hawk recovers from injuries sustained when their jet was hit by lightning and crashed on the Iraq-Iran border. While off duty they agree to help a fellow serviceman, Mitch, find his sister when she stops answering his calls.
Kendra's been staying at Ashland House, a refuge for abused women, but when Colt visits, one of the assistant directors denies her ever being there and makes Colt leave. The mystery deepens when she and Hawk learn through another resident that women are regularly disappearing from the refuge, and it's not long before they're mixed up with the FBI, people traffickers, and an assortment of villains all out to stop them finding out what's going on.
If you like pacey, page-turners full of twists and turns then Arleigh Jacobs provides plenty in this race against time through the streets of Melbourne, New York. Jacob's characters are sharply drawn and she handles Colt's Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy with skill and sensitivity. 'Cross Winds' is a high octane adventure and I highly recommend it.
It's always a pleasure to discover a new strong female action lead. Colt is a professional with a past and, intriguingly an inability to feel physical pain. This curse makes her courageous, if foolhardy. With refreshingly innovative plot twists this story is a very satisfying read.
As with the prequel I enjoyed Arleigh Jacobs writing with this book and stayed up late just to be able to finish. I was pleasantly surprised with how good the book was. The only downfall for me was it all feeling kind of rushed with the whole story line including the ending.
Good build up and many queries till all heck breaks out. And surprises! Then the horror! Colt is an intriguing woman with an interesting affliction who the reader knows can and will punish those responsible I happily anticipate more of Talia Colt's journey
Well written and paced. I don't know if Colt's DNA problem is legitimate but it does make for a good story. I was a little confused about the ending as to what happened to Amber.
Kindle Unlimited I was introduced to the author via a short story, Straight Flight, in the compilation of shorts titled 12 Shots: 12 Crimes, etc. Arleigh is an author I will follow, and one I am happy to recommend to friends and family. She writes a heartfelt tale with personable characters and rapid, believable action.
This was a new to me author and their first full sized book. WHAT A WAY TO START!! I was transfixed from cover to cover and immediately diving into the next book.
Love the down-to-earth style of the writing, how the external/internal problems are tied together, the light mystery, and the subversion of several tropes. A quick, gripping read that alternately had me laughing and biting my nails.
Missing women from a home for abused women. A missng brother, leading to an overworked ex pilot turned investigator getting involved with a story which twists and turns from one exciting escapade to the next ending happily ???? Read to find out, well worth the read and comes highly recommended by me
